Fantastic tool
5 Star Review   By ChuckC on Home Depot - Jun 4, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

My old Jet 12" planar had just quit working. I read several online reviews and this one got outstanding marks. I have bought many other Makita tools and they were always great. However, this planar seems to be the best. The boards are *REALLY* smooth. Snipe is very minimal, much less than professional/big planars. The cut is so smooth it looks like it has been sanded. I have been working with African Mahogony (pretty soft) which is prone to tear-out, but this planar almost doesn't tear anything out. It is really an outstanding planar. Definitely worth the money. I should have bought it years ago! The controls and overall design are very well thought out. Though fairly heavy, the design allows you to carry it with both hands, so it isn't difficult. I have only used it a few times so far, but it is way ahead of my original Jet planar ever was.

The tool works fine
5 Star Review   By JB4957 on Home Depot - May 28, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

The instructions leave a lot to be desired. There are no clear instructions on how to care for planner or change blades. I am a first time buyer of a planer and like the results i've been getting with this planer. I would recommend this tool but would like more detailed instructions...

Excellent and Easy to Use
5 Star Review   By JayS on Home Depot - May 21, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

I did quite a bit of research on portable planers, and decided on this Makita 2012NB. It worked right out of the box. With the Dust Hood it was all I could want. As other reviewers have indicated, some adjustment has to be made to adapt the Dust Hood to a dust collector - but that was fairly minor. It is light enough to move easily, and store in my shop (where I don't have the room for a full-sized unit). In the past 3 weeks I have used it to plane down some tough wood - copper beech - and it worked well. In its initial use, I am quite satisfied.

good planer, watch out for the shipped condition
4 Star Review   By spidennis on Home Depot - May 19, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

Like all of these types of planers this one also has the 2" snipe problems at each end. It is made less by running the next piece or test piece at the beginning and end. Otherwise it seems to do a pretty good job making what was a pretty messy surface into something that hardly needs sanding. I'm making 1/4" thick strips (by 3/4" tall) for wooden strip built canoes and I've run about 1000 feet so far and everything is fine. --------- I will note that the box it came in wasn't meant for UPS shipping because mine had a dent/crack at the front base that could only happen with great force. If this was on a pallet like being shipped in quantity this would not have happened. I'm not about to return it as it's now a busy part of my work flow and it's working ok.

Good machine for limited space
5 Star Review   By woody on Home Depot - Jan 29, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

Good sturdy machine. Leaves small light nips but not to bad. Nothing a light sanding wouldn't take care of.

Great
5 Star Review   By kypjim on Home Depot - Dec 27, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

I've owned and used a Delta 12" Planer for over 15 years. I considered getting another Delta but when I did an extensive search from the big boy Jet 15" stationary to the best portable that Dewalt makes- I decided the reviews favored a Makita. I'm not disappointed. I ran my rough cherry through and it didn't grunt, burn or need a lot of sanding. There was a bit of snipe on long boards but not the amount I was getting with the Delta. I am a bit perplexed that a unit @ 10 years old still sells for over $500. This unit is new, yes as far as never used but it wasn't manufactured after 2010 like many of the portable units on the market today. Apparently Makita DOES sell a more updated unit but this one sold by Home Depot is the older model. I say that as a means of clarification but please don't misunderstand the unit itself IS great and a TWO blade not a three blade unit (which in the long run is cheaper as far as upkeep). Some blades on the portable units are only one sided or they cost over $50 a set. These blades are two sided so when (in the middle of a project) you see that the blades need changed, all you have to do is flip them over. It's good to have an extra set on hand for when you've already used both sides. Bottomline- I recommend this unit. It's sturdier than my Delta, gives a better finish, less snipe, more features especially for volume projects that require several boards at the same thickness (takes away the guess work).

Power-tool Perfection
5 Star Review   By CherokeeOne on Home Depot - Dec 11, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

I make custom picture frames from ugly oak pallet planks. This planer makes the transformation from ugly to beautiful in seconds. I wish that every power-tool in my garage was as elegant in form and function.

worth the money
5 Star Review   By Dave on Home Depot - Oct 23, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

This is by far the nicest planer I've ever had!! It's relatively light weight, small, surprisingly quiet, and easily handles a full 12 inch wide board up to 6 inches thick. I have not run any hardwoods through it yet, but based on how nicely it finished fir, pine, redwood, and cedar, I suspect it will have no trouble with harder materials. If you don't have a chip removal system I recommend either using it outside or hooking a large shop vac to it, but be carefull, the vac fills up quickly.

A great tool
5 Star Review   By Bob65 on Home Depot - Aug 14, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

In the past 25 years I've used several professional floor planers , I own an older 12" Delta and have used several othe bench type models. I love this tool. It's fairly quiet, has almost no snipe and gives a very uniform thickness across a board. I build components for racing iceboats and work with thickness tolerances of .008 or less. With the index on the height crank I have been able to just that. One other thing I'm no kid any more but this planer is light enough for me to easily carry.

Excellent machine
5 Star Review   By stovie on Home Depot - May 15, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

So far so good. The machine was shipped very quickly and arrived in excellent condition. I do NOT have a lot of experience with planers (so take my comments with the appropriate grain of salt), but the machine works well, and does the job with virtually no pitting and a surprisingly acceptable noise level. There were several less expensive options, but I read several online reviews that recommended this model based on quality, noise and blade life, and I didn't want to try to go cheap only to be disappointed. The attached fold out feed shelves (for the lack of an appropriate technical term) are a nice built in add on that would have been a separate purchase on other machines. They make the work much easier. I mounted the machine on a spare stand, and would recommend others consider doing the same or building a sturdy stand.

Good machine except for dust hood.
4 Star Review   By fadeout on Home Depot - Feb 21, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

After a month of limited use, I like the planer. So far, it seems to do everything Makita says it will. The dust hood, an extra at about twenty bucks uses a three inch outlet. I found a metal clothes dryer hose at Lowes, which works just fine. But, you shouldn't have to resort to this. Makita should have either supplied the dust hood with the planer or at least supplied one that accepts standard dust collection accessories.

Easy blade change
5 Star Review   By James on Home Depot - Feb 11, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

I was very surprised at how easy the blade change is with this model. The planer works very well and the easy blade change is an important plus. Love this machine.

Works much better than expected
5 Star Review   By Rickets on Home Depot - Dec 22, 2011    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

Sure, I read all of the reviews on this very planer, but I didn't know it would work as great as it did. I only did about 20 lnr. ft, but man the finish was un real! I went straight to building my medicine cab without sanding! I think i'm going to change out the in and out feed tables for ones little longer and put a 1/8 inch rise on them too to totally eliminate snipe (even though there was NO snipe at all).

Very well made machine
5 Star Review   By 808woodshop on Home Depot - Aug 8, 2011    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

The good: -Quite operation -Included folding in feed/out feed tables. -Very little snipe. 2-1/2 inches on the in feed, zero on the out feed for mine. Took about 15 seconds with 80 grit to clean it off. -Very smooth finish -Compact, and ready to go out of the box. The not so good: -The 3 inch, hard to find dust hood needs to be included. Finding adapters to fit it to your vacuum or D.E. will take some hunting. Overall I am very pleased with the performance of this machine and at about $60.00 less than the other top rated planer that begins with a 'D' and colored yellow, it's also a better buy. -Aaron
