Cedar deck sanding
5 Star Review   By TXOutdoors on Home Depot - Apr 23, 2013

Used this tool for my medium sized cedar deck. Never once did it act up, over heat or anything negative. It ran great, sanded to heavy coats of stain back the original sweet smell of cedar. No burn marks, circular marks. Deck looks brand new because of the sander. Highly recommend

Not what I expected
1 Star Review   By srvrace on Home Depot - Mar 29, 2013

Overall this sander was a great disapointment. I am refinishing a floor in a small room in my house. I purchased this unit to help get the edges up to the baseboards. Actually after much review reading and researching random orbital sanders in general I was going to atempt the whole floor with just this (its very small)but upon starting the project there was just no way. You can literally leave this sander in the same spot for several minutes and will not remove much material. I have tried various amounts of hand presure (which if you press hard on it you can see it leave odd swirl marks instantly) and 3 different brands of paper and different grits. I had to break out the belt sander to do the job and i'm using a cheap crafts*** cordless sander for the edges and corners. Highly disapointed.

very good product
5 Star Review   By dmacmarketing on Home Depot - Dec 4, 2012

I have owned a Dewalt sander like this for years. I was faced with a large drywall sanding project so I purchased this sander so two of us could sand and get done quicker. I purchased this product because of the quality of my older one. I was NOT disappointed in the performance of my new sander. The features are great. Having the vaccum attachment is a big one. This product is great and I highly recommend it

Fair for the price.............
3 Star Review   By furball on Home Depot - Jul 24, 2012

If sander is tilted, even a little, orbital head will stall. The sander is loud, and HEAVY. Weight will not be a problem unless you have overhead work. I would recommend this machine.

Great tool
5 Star Review   By SWink on Home Depot - Jul 20, 2012

I've been using this DeWalt sander for a couple of months now. It gets the job done! I've used it from refinishing window sills to sanding down new plywood for cabinets, all the way to sanding down my weatherbeaten deck to a smooth finish before staining. I was impressed by the power! The hook and loop connection to the sanding pads is easy and trustworthy. The power switch is sealed off from any dust from entering. Note: Make sure to fully depress the switch to On or Off. A couple times I had turned the sander off and set it down on the workpiece. Seconds later it magically turned back on and started spinning around. Fortunately it didn't damage the workpiece. This is why I said to make sure to firmly depress the switch to On/Off. This should not be a deciding issue on purchasing this sander. Overall, an excellent tool for anyone looking for a quality finish.

Tough and fast
5 Star Review   By TonySr on Home Depot - Jul 3, 2012

I recently decided to refinish the stairs in my house and my old light duty orbital sander was acting up. I went to Home Depot and purchased the Dewalt 5" and a couple of contractor packs of sandpaper in different grits. The sander worked very well and two days later, I was done. I found that you should use a heavier grit than you would expect to initially take off the old finish and smooth out the surface. I am very pleased with the sander.

Works great
5 Star Review   By Rico on Home Depot - Dec 6, 2011

Ordered online, picked up in store 15 minutes later--was ready at front! Tool works well. I used it to refinish our kitchen table. Went very smoothly. Has only 1 speed, and takes a long time to wind down when turned off. Great product, but I'm not convinced it's worth twice as much as the Craftsman equivalent, at half price

Nice sander, but no hard case as pictured
5 Star Review   By Tano on Home Depot - Oct 21, 2011

I just received this sander and it is actually the second one of this model that I own and I am very leased with the way it perfoms. My only issue is that it is shown with the kit box but comes with a soft bag, so Iam returning this and buying the same model in the store. I am one of those people that prefers the box for storage and stacking reasons, Otherwise you won't be disappointed in the sander. I used my other identical sander to completely sand two flights of stairs in my house, it worked so well my sister "borrowed" it to re-do her stairs, so I am buying another.

garbage
1 Star Review   By spypole on Home Depot - Sep 19, 2011

Well...if you want to pay $30 for each of hour of use that you get out of this piece of junk then by all means buy one. I've never been so disappointed in a DeWalt tool in my life and I've owned quite a few. Only up side is that it's under warranty so I suppose I'm obligated to give it another go on their dime...

Great Sander

I had a painted countertop that I took down to bare wood and the result was beautiful. The random orbital rotation left no discernable pattern and it produces a very even finish.

5 Star Review   By MrJJ on Home Depot - Dec 21, 2010

Believe it or not I used this to refinish the hardwoods in my living room. My back and wrists wouldn't suggest doing this, but the machine held up just fine! Didn't overheat and is quite powerful for such a small sander. The dust bag caught a TON . Absolutely

DeWalt 5 inch Orbit Sander

I've only had a chance to use it one time. However, the sander will remove some material quickly. Not a bad deal for the price.

Takes a lickin'
5 Star Review   By Ogee1kenobe on Home Depot - Oct 8, 2009

I've used (and abused) my DeWalt in excess of 5 years. Only now am I having problems, but I confess they are likely of my own making: I haven't always used 5" disks with 8 discharge holes instead of 5 holes nor have maintained the sander by cleaning off the dust or using dust collection (I tossed the dust bag the second day I had it), now the "hooks" on the bottom plate won't hold on to the paper. Naturally, I have lost the replacement part information, but once I find how to get a new plate, it'll continue to work like knew. This is a well-designed and well-made machine.

Solid unit
5 Star Review   By SJDave on Home Depot - Jan 9, 2009

bought the sander for light duty home projects. Another solid product from DeWalt!! Be sure buy the 4-1/2" x 5-1/2" sandpaper sheets (not the 4-1/2 x 4-1/2). This sander is a solid unit, light vibration, and works great. Very good for small jobs! Comes with case, sandpaper punch and fits easily to rigid shop vac for dust collection.

Drywall Sanding
5 Star Review   By luke55 on Home Depot - Apr 16, 2008

I recently finished my garage and after 2 days of sanding the walls I now had to do the ceiling. I already had a pole sander from another project and it was not working that well or maybe it was user error I’m not sure. I saw that everyone liked this sander so I thought it work for me because its not the heavy and easy to hold above your head for long periods of time. IT WORKED GREAT I finished sanding my ceiling and even went back over the walls in only a day.

small dust bag
4 Star Review   By vk1234 on Home Depot - Aug 17, 2007

The sander do it's job well, only the dust bag is kind of small and loose easy, can't use my shop vac with it, the hole is too small or too big for the hose, can't find the right size adapter for it, will keep it till it die out and try another brand that can use with my shop vac or with a bigger dust bag.

Random Orbit Sander
4 Star Review   By dolphingirl on Home Depot - Aug 10, 2007

I purchased this sander to sand hardwood flooring planks I had taken out of my grandmother's house. It has been working very well. It is extremely easy to use, and works very well, leaving no marks and sanding evenly.

Sour on the dust collection bag
3 Star Review   By Mike01 on Home Depot - May 8, 2007

This is the first sander I have purchased. The unit worked great for the application, a little work horse! However the dust collection bag was somewhat small and the worse part was that during the sanding, the bag partially tore apart from it's plastic housing which was not supposed to happen. Since the bag was facing my back during the sanding, I did not noticed when it became defective and spewed dust everywhere. Since this is a sander, I thought it was merely the dust from the sanding process. Little did I know it was spewing dust like a car exhaust behind me. A Messy clean up was ahead. I had taken it back for a replacement. I will pay more attention to the bag this time when using it.

Dewalt 5" random orbit sander
4 Star Review   Home Depot

Yet another piece of my wood-working hobby puzzle... this is my first electric sander. After consulting a few reviews abroad and keeping price-point as a primary concern, I settled on this one. I have had it about 6 months and have familiarized myself with the ins and outs of it. Strengths: 1. hook and loop. Very very simple to change sanding discs. 2. control. Doesn't walk or jitter on you; is easy to keep under control, and doesn't seem to have problems with weight distribution (doesn't sand harder/deeper on one side than the other) nicely balanced. No swirling. 3. sealed switch. On.off switch is placed in the perfect spot and is sealed to prevent dust and debris getting in. 4. price. For what you get, this sander starts at an excellent price. 5. comfortable. rubber grips placed in primary positions offer a comfortable grip. Weaknesses: 1. weight. It seems a bit heavy in comparison with others in its class. Although, as mentioned before, it is well balanced, so the weight issue doesn't cause uneven sanding patterns. 2. dust bag. The dust collection bag is rather small and fills quickly, you have to empty it pretty regularly. Conslusion: All in all, this is a great sander... and offers room to grow, especially because it was purchased with entry-level ambitions. I would definitely recommend this sander to beginners, as well as professionals, as it offers a nice balance of features and a great price.
