1 Star Review   By MFC1 on Home Depot - May 8, 2013

Our Bosch electric tankless water heater, bought in July 2012 stopped working in December. After 2 months And countless hours on the phone, they sent a new circuit board. 3 months after that, the unit exploded and flooded the garage. This morning Bosch told me it was our fault there is a dime sized hole in the tank. I had a Bosch propane unit in our old house and there were no problems with it. The electric tankless is a worthless piece of junk and customer service is a joke.

Less than 1 star
1 Star Review   By Barb on Home Depot - Mar 10, 2013

We originally had a Bosch AE115 after less than 3 years we replaced it with a Bosch AE125 from Home Depot. The AE125 is no longer functioning after only 9 months. Tried to get someone to fix it and everyone we contact says "we don't work on those anymore". My husband went to Home Depot who called Bosch and Bosch wants an electrician to get on the phone with them to assess the tankless water heater. Home Depot gave us the name of an electrician they recommend but when we called them they also said "we don't repair those". So we still don't have hot water. The electrician said someone would call us back but that was over a week ago. What ever you do don't buy a Bosch Tankless Water Heater.

This heater will save you money
5 Star Review   By AverageGuy on Home Depot - Jan 29, 2013

I am a big fan of tankless heaters. But there are a few points to consider before installing one. First, go with the gas version if at all possible. Much more efficient and in many cases, an easier install. The electric versions pull about as many amps as an outside air conditioner so you better be sure your electric panel can handle it. Second the rated hot water output depends on how cold the inlet water temperature is. The output temperature depends on the contact time of the water and the heating elements. The colder the inlet temperature, the longer the contact time needed to heat the water. What this means is if is really cold out, the output flow will need to be reduced substantially for the unit to work properly. Otherwise the output water does not heat. Not lukewarm, not mildly hot. It will not heat. I installed one of these last summer here in Arizona and there were no problems. This winter it got unseasonably cold and the the first unit could not keep up with the demand of even one shower. So I installed this second unit and the problem was solved. Be prepared for about $2,000 in install costs split about evenly between plumbing and electrical. These really pull some amps! But only when they are running so you do save a quite a bit of money. If you decide to install more than one, install them parallel, not one after another. Better check to see if Bosch recommends this if you are concerned about warranty issues. I am very happy with the end results. There are several other brands out there. One is a Japanese named unit. I had one of them in a home in Northern California and it worked great until it didn't work great. Very expensive to install and they force you to use expensive plumbers they set up as "dealers". Beware of such a scheme. Home Depot is by far my first choice for purchasing this unit. But check with a plumber AND an electrician before ordering this unit. Unless you are HIGHLY proficient in both high voltage wiring and plumbing, you will need the services of both trades.

In 2 years we have had 3 AE 125 water heaters break
1 Star Review   By hotwaterless on Home Depot - Dec 5, 2012

We bought this water heater first over 2 years ago and have had our electrician friend install/work on maintenence with this product. We like that the unit saves space and is not using electricity when we are not home. However, we are now on our third machine that has broken on us and left us without hot water for weeks at a time. We origionally did not have a water filteration system so the water heater coroded and needed to buy a new unit since it was our fault. We bought a brand new AE125 water heater, since then we have had no hot water multiple times due to the system breaking on us. When there has been an issue, it has taken hours to problem solve what is wrong, one can only reach the company from 8am-5pm, and it has taken days for them to ship a new unit or new part to us. After having no hot water for multile days/weeks more than 3 times between 3 seperate units, I would not recomend the product to anyone!

Fair product
2 Star Review   By cbucz24 on Home Depot - Apr 13, 2012

water temp fluctuates like others have stated, seems to also be related to water pressure. I upgraded every piece in my plumbing system, even installing pressure regulator as suggested in manual and still getting fluctuation. Which when your lathered up and it goes scalding hot or freezing cold in a small stand up shower its not nice. This would probably work better if you lived in an area with city water. Well water on this unit is not advised... Going to attempt to return this item and get better name brand online since its not offered in store :( My only advantage I have is it was clearance priced at my store to $244.06 and I see why it was now...

Amazing! And easy!!!
5 Star Review   By lkerrone on Home Depot - Mar 15, 2012

This thing is amazing! I was hesitant at first, as I live in upstate NY, where it gets really cold in the winter. I was worried about it being able to get the water hot enough - if you have any doubts, leave them now. I don't have the water heater turned up all the way, and it's so hot coming out of the faucet I have it barely past the middle point to take a steaming hot shower. I think the reason it's only rated for what it is, is that if someone were to get less, because of a high load, the company cannot be held liable. Believe me though, it is more than sufficient even in the coldest weather. Incoming city water, even in winter, usually isn't lower than 45 in the ground, fyi. Easy to install as well - you need 200A service to your house, 6 empty spots, and an afternoon with a helper, and you can install it yourself.

Unreliable, broad temp fluctuation, short life.
1 Star Review   By Nozumi on Home Depot - Feb 25, 2012

I like instant on water heaters and have used them for years with no problems. Unfortunately, this brand is of poor quality, and the output temperature fluctuates wildly. Other times, hot water flow stops and then resumes a few minutes later for no apparent reason. That's not fun when you're lathered up! And worse yet, this brand does not last long; it quit after 4 years. Yes, it's under warranty, but the warranty does not cover new installation; warranty does not cover the hassle, and I would rather not have to replace expensive appliances every four years.

Excellent hot water for nyc 45F to 130F no problem
5 Star Review   By cruise on Home Depot - Nov 23, 2011

read other people's review was kinda nervous before ordering it, so many crazy reviews saying its not enough hot water, and this and that problem. of course all this install is best left to professionals. had our electrical updated to 220 and ran 120amp to the tankless, runs perfectly fine hot water in this nice cold winter that we having already. water coming in 45F and i have perfectly hot 130F. i'd say to those who doesn't have hot water please turn on the temperature control to the max! cause the professional installer did the opposite and turn it to the otherside to the lowest setting temp. due to this tankless not having a temp gage. we can't tell what temp it is. that's probably 1 of the only thing i would like to have vs. the dial we have. also i ran both the sink and shower at the same time during this nice cold winter , still have enough hot water for showering with out the cold water. :D enjoy many days of hot shower to come

Works Like Magic
5 Star Review   By flash332 on Home Depot - Nov 13, 2011

What a fantastic appliance - exceeds my expectations. Easily supplies endless hot water to our whole house (2 baths + kitchen). One caveat: make sure you have the capacity in your electrical panel for 3 40amp 2 pole breakers, and that you have 200amp service to your panel.

Poor product, even worse support.
1 Star Review

Strengths: Endless showers when it works

Weakness: Temperature fluctuations, not hot enough in winter (even though unit was oversized)

I replaced a 40 gallon electric under counter unit with the Powerstar AE125. When it is working it is just adequate during the warmer months. I live in Indianapolis and after Nov 1 the temp never gets hot enough. I have had multiple plumbers and electricians on the phone with Bosch support with mixed results. The support is so bad I would never buy another Bosch product. If you still want a tankless unit, buy a gas unit and don't buy Bosch.

it ran for 5 years without an issue. used it to fill the hot tub several times. amazing on demand; and i have cold well water. then it developed a small leak around the white wires and the bottom of the middle heater. turned green. called bosch, they asked for pictures and i sent them. i received a call back in 15 minutes telling me they were sending a new one to my house. thanx bosch, i'll keep buying your stuff.

Nice engineering - quiet and consistent
5 Star Review   By Chris04848 on Home Depot - May 14, 2011

I replaced our old tankless heater with this one, and it works so much better! The temperature does fluctuate a little bit, but it's within such a narrow range, you almost don't notice it when you're taking a shower. Nothing like the old one!!! P.S.: Works great even with the cold Maine well water.

DO NOT BUY THIS!
1 Star Review   By BCoyote on Home Depot - Feb 24, 2011

This is a poorly designed product. The manufacturer recommends this for cold climates, but the unit is unable to produce acceptably hot water at the full output temperature setting for well water measuring 60 F, well within the specified input. The unit turns on at a flow of 1.25 gpm, not 0.8 gpm as the spec sheet says. That is where it turns off. The result is that my bathroom sink (and most small sinks) will never see any hot water from the unit. If your sink does have hot water it will only be at full on. That is simply not energy efficient. Technical support is abysmal. The personnel are trained to turn any problem back onto the customer and try to ignore the design flaws. Their tech hung up on me, then didn't answer the phone when I called right back. By the time I had figured out all these problems, it was too late to return the unit. Don't let this happen to you.

Don't do it!!
1 Star Review   By raininginoregon on Home Depot - Sep 19, 2010

I purchased this product about 3 years ago and was somewhat happy with it for the first year or so, in spite of uneven water temperatures. Be aware the discharge water temperature will vary as the incoming water temperature or pressure changes. Then things began to fail one at a time after the warranty ran out. First a thermal cutout went bad. It took me two weeks to get one from the factory. (It's a specialty item only sold through Bosch....everything is) Finally the control board failed. I'm tired of working on it and am going back to a standard, old fashioned and reliable hot water tank. To be honest, I really didn't notice much savings in electricity. This unit is just too unreliable to justify the high purchase price and the high installation costs. Invest in more insulation.

Not in Stock??
2 Star Review   By Canabob on Home Depot - Jul 12, 2010

The first problem that I encountered when "trying" to purchase this item was, that it was not available in a store. Normally when someone needs to buy a water heater it is an emergency and not being able to get one quickly was a hassle. I also recomend that you put an aproximate cost of additional materials needed, for me it was $160, fortunately I was able to install everything myself or the cost of installation could have been very large. So far the product usage has been questionable, adjustments have been made when using the shower, and sinks in my house. Overall I am not as pleased as I would like to have been with this product.

5 Star Review   By Kduck on Home Depot - May 31, 2010

The only problem I have had is with my Water Company, and their issues with water pressure and repairing broken mains in our area. If you have water pressure issues, just set the temperature at a lower setting, and you should keep hot water.

Loving the unit.
5 Star Review   Home Depot

We installed the unit in January to replace a Seisco unit that had given us relentless grief for three years. The AE unit has been terrific and has provided limitless hot water. We can now use our bathtub again. The Seisco unit could not produce enough hot water to fill the tub. My husband installed the unit with very little trouble. Make sure you have the electrical requirements before you begin installation.

Overall Good Product
4 Star Review   By kpete10 on Home Depot - Apr 5, 2010

Recently I purchased this tankless hot water heater for my home which is about 2400 sq ft. It works pretty good, although it does take several minutes for the hot water to reach most of the rooms. I can say to be prepared for additional cost to install the unit. As many of the other reviews were quite helpful in knowning what to except during the install, it did take a plumber and an electrician to insure proper installation. I do like this product. I have yet to run out of hot water, and have actually used both showers in my house at the same time and had no problems. Overall this is a good product and I would recommend.

We purchased this water heater 2 1/2 yrs ago. Temp kept fluctuating. Then completely went out. No hot water. Called bosch. Needs heat sink. $278.00 for parts. I felt it should be COVERED under the warranty but it is not. We are very disappointed and will not reccommend this particular brand to anyone.

AE125
5 Star Review   By CO3TDCJ on Home Depot - Sep 22, 2009

I installed an AE125 Tankless Hot Water Heater over the weekend. Other than the electrical needs it was a snap to install. It takes three (3) dedicated 220 leads of 8 gauge wire. If your not knowledgable on electric wiring, I would recommend you get a certified electrican. Other wise you shouldn't have any trouble. Our 50 gal. hot water heater was getting old and not giving the service we wanted. When we deceided to install a new water heater, we said why keep 50 gal. of warer hot all the time. Just a waste of energy. There was no wait for the AE125 to fill up with water and get hot. Once it was installed we had a steady stream of hot water. Will have to wait to see if there are any energy savings, but, we are totally satisfied with the performance of the unit. Would reccomend it to everyone.

Although the installation instructions could be much better and easier, the product works great. The water is warm and then hot very quickly. I would recommend this product to my family and friends any day of the week. Save money; buy one of these great inventions!!!!

Tankless Waterheater
5 Star Review   By OKIETANKLESS on Home Depot - Aug 17, 2009

Product does what they say it will. Electric work was costly due to power needs (3 40 AMP Breakers, older boxes just do not have the space) on my older home, but well worth the cost.

You need this
4 Star Review   By Skylar on Home Depot - Jul 21, 2009

Make sure you understand that it has to have 3 separate double 40amp breakers with #8 wiring. Most houses are wired from one double breaker to the heater.

Buyer Beware
2 Star Review   By member Trying2BGreen - Jun 26, 2009

Strengths: Energy efficient Space saving Good Concept heating water as needed

Weakness: Product durability Temperature variation Poor Customer Service

Purchased this product to replace a 22 year old oil fired 40 gallon hot water tank. Eight months later leak in heat exchange that should have a 10 year warranty. I had a plumber come out to determine cause which was a vertical crack in unit, Bosch tech not available after 5 pm so the representative told me to call back next day. Following day tech tells me I will need to have a plumber remove the top of the heat exchange to verify scaling was not the cause. Scaling caused by hard water nullifies the warranty, but the product has only been in use 8 months. This is an expensive item and so is the installation, now I was facing these additional expenses. Two weeks without hot water, the replacement unit was finally received (no scaling) and installed, now I am left to wonder will I ever recoup these losses let alone see any kind of savings. I also worry about how long this unit will last before something else goes wrong with it. Potential buyers read other consumer reviews and check Bosch's Better Business Rating before purchasing.

It was a nightmare
1 Star Review

Weakness: Never worked....period

Horrible experience. Installed when we built our new home just 2 years before. Never worked properly. Horrific experience w/Bosch. Could not get anyone to work on it on our area (Syracuse, NY). Finally, found 1 professional to come who had completed Bosch's course. Informed us that model was defective to begin with and Bosch knew it. When he came we also discovered that the venting system had been melting and burning. (Tech we had used prior, recommended by Bosch, told us it was insulation!).Had unit removed and replaced with a RINNAI. What a pleasure.

Works
5 Star Review   By Voice on Home Depot - Feb 17, 2009

Best investment I have ever made to save $$$ at home ... We used it at our vacation condo on the coast and have cut our electric bill by at least 1/3 ... This Unit does not like two people trying to shower at the same time but with Water Saver Shower Heads and summer temps it is doable ... We have 2 bedrooms (1200sqft) - if it was bigger I would go with one of the Gas Models ... But the bottom line is The Bottom Line - It works !!!

Works Great
5 Star Review   By Speckledbird on Home Depot - Dec 11, 2008

We purchased the AE 125 after our regular hot water heater went out. Make sure that your electrical system is at 200 amps, because that is what the hot water heater requires. Once we got it hooked up, it works great. I would recommend getting a water softener because you won't have to worry about corroding of the hot water heater. The hard water can make the heater stop working and the instructions recommend a water softener. Overall it gives out plenty of hot water and works great in the Wyoming winter. I would definetly recommend this hot water heater if you are looking to upgrade.

PowerStar AE125 Whole House Electric Tankless Water Heater AE125
1 Star Review   By member dcook10 - Nov 1, 2008

Strengths: Small size and contiuous hot water.

Weakness: Poorly made. Terrible customer support from Bosch.

25 months after installing this unit it failed. Called the Bosch helpline and was told I need to get a multimeter and troubleshoot the box. One Bosch rep opined that I should have had a surge protector on the circuit. Another suggested getting a plumber and an electrician to come out and look at it. I am not an electrician so I hired one who found that the circuit card had burned up. Bosch's limited warranty of course doesn't cover this item. A week of cold showers in Oct and $400 later it is fixed...until the next time. Don't buy any Bosch product, they're junk!

tankless water heater (electric)
5 Star Review   By rtrt on Home Depot - Aug 20, 2008

Very happy with this product after first week of use. I can even run the dishwasher and take a shower at the same time (although the temperature does fluctuate). Love being able to run one thing after another without running out of hot. Also love the little space it takes up. It was quite a project to get connected but would still do it again. Hopefully it will save electricity in the long run too.

great so far
4 Star Review   By lodog on Home Depot - Aug 2, 2008

I've had the unit for 2 to 3 weeks with no problems to date. Plenty of hot water even with the dishwasher, shower and sink going simultaneously. Not too hard to install-easy instructions. Waiting to see the electric bill. The downside was the price for the extra wiring, breakers, piping, fittings...

AE125 Tankless Heater
5 Star Review   By waterld on Home Depot - May 31, 2008

We recently renovated our home and after much research decided to change the old 70 gal water tank for the Tankless Hot Water Heater. The first day after moving back into the house, my wife ran 5 loads of laundry, 2 loads in the dishwasher, and we both took showers without ever running out of hot water. The real test though, was Memorial Day Weekend when 5 of our children, their spouses, and 2 of our grandchildren came to visit. The children all decided to "test" our our new water heater. All of them took showers, one right after the other, and none of them ran out of hot water. As a further test, my wife waited till I was in the shower and then turned the dishwater on. Not only did I not run out of hot water in the shower, I didn't notice a drop in the water temperature! The only draw back I see is the amount of power required in the breaker box, 3 - 40 amp breakers. This was not a problem for us as we removed all the baseboard heaters in the house so we had plenty of breaker space available. If this option is not available, I recommend talking to an electrician and have them check your power availability. Other than that, we have only good things to say about this heater. In fact, removing the old tank water heater gave me the room to install a custom cabinet style ironing board for my wife. We highly recommend this product for anyone thinking of converting to a tankless system.

Great product, easy install
5 Star Review   By greenzombie77 on Home Depot - Nov 23, 2007

First things first - this thing works very well, but you have to make sure you have sufficient electrical service to install it. You need 3 40 amp 240 volt breakers, and a 200 amp power panel. Ok, having said that, i've had this for a month now, and find that it heats quickly, has been very reliable, and I was able to install it myself. I am an electrician, which helps, but the plumbing tie-in was also fairly easy. I can't ask for much more than that!

PowerStar AE125 Whole House Electric Tankless Water Heater AE125
2 Star Review   By member DonD2007 - May 17, 2007

Strengths: small efficient ? longer warranty than conventional water heaters

Weakness: Long wait for warranty service prone to break down expensive to install not sure about energy savings

with in weeks of installation we needed to have the circuit board replaced waited a long time to get then the unit quit almost a year later there is no way to get an instant fix. be prepared to wait for a new heater and no help from the manufacturer in getting one overnighted to you. as far as saving on your electric be prepared to upgrade and run extra wires it requires three separate 40 amp double pole breakers and three dedicated lines to the heater . if you have a teenager keep in mind the water never runs out so that means the shower can run non stop so you may not save money in the long run.

Electric Tankless water is great
5 Star Review   By GAJJAX on Home Depot - Mar 12, 2007

The unit is small and works as advertised. The temperature can be adjusted to very hot if desired. Needed a Professional electrian to connect because it requires 3 separate lines, can't just use old electric tank water line. I waited 2 months to write the review and I am very happy with the unit. I have no guilt for a long hot shower anytime.

tankless water wonder :)
5 Star Review   By ATLBCHFL on Home Depot - Jan 23, 2007

I live at the beach and I was constantly having problems with rust, etc in my water heater. I had just gotten frustrated and replaced several, probably before they needed to be as I was tired of calling people to my house to work on it. I had this unit installed about a month ago, and have had no problems with the water heater. I did have to hire someone to do this, a professional, and there was a lot of discussion of amps and breakers and wiring. I do know some of the breakers had to be replaced. I highly recommend this as I live in a house with two kitchens and three baths and we have had no hot water problems.

Powerstar a PLUS
5 Star Review   By plumbob on Home Depot - Jan 18, 2007

I retired in 2005. My Wife and I have become very aware of uor household expenses. The purchase of our Powerstar has been s real plus in controlling our overhead. I would surely recommend this unit to all seniors who are retired or approaching retirement. The support I received from the Home Depot, Brandywine, I frequent, was excellent.

check your wiring
3 Star Review   Home Depot

This is a GREAT idea but not for every house. We had to send it back and purchase a regular tank water heater. We did not have enough power coming into the house and would have had to get the electric company out to put in a new box and double our power. For a new home or a home or one with excessive power, it would be perfect. Wish we could have used it, but for us it was not to be.

AE125 Electric Tankless Water Heater
5 Star Review   By andyL on Home Depot - Aug 18, 2006

It was pretty easy to install. I'm familiar with electrical and plumbing. The water temp does tend to vary a bit but it's hardly noticeable. I have city water with 80 psi so I don't think it's a pressure issue. I would recommend to anybody as long as you have the panel space for 3 40 amps 220's. I put an amp meter on it and it does suck some serious ampage. Don't even think about it unless you have a 200 amp service. It's amazingly compact 16" x 16" x 4". Everybody says "that's your water heater?"

Electric Tankless hot water heater Powerstar AE125
5 Star Review   Home Depot

The unit was easy to install. It does require 200 amp service to the house & 3 - 40amp 220 circuits. I am not an electrician or plumber, and I was able to install it myself. The hot water has been great. We did have one strange problem. The second shower (farest away from the heater) was not getting constant hot water. It was hot, then cold, and then would get hot again; never constant. The problem was our lack of water pressure (less than 40 pounds); we increased the water pressure and it works great. I wish I had done this years ago!

AE 125 Hot Water Heater
3 Star Review   Home Depot

Two disappointments. Hot water never above 100-105 degrees with nothing else running. Electrical needs should be more prominently disclosed. 3 40amp circuit breakers @ 220 needed to make system work. Unit small and compact.

5 Star Review   Home Depot

I really like the whole house hot water heater. I am on well water and didn't know if it would heat 66 degree inlet water temp but it will. I turned the easy access temp. control down one third of the way and still have plenty of hot water for showers, dish washer, baths and washing machine. I installed a ball valve on inlet and outlet side of water heater which allows me to control flow of water which stopes any to hot and to cold water flow being on a electric pump 25 to 50 pound pressure and it workes great. Unit was easy to install. Takes up almost no space in utility room. I haven't used it enough yet to tell if it saves me on electricity yet. But I am sure it will. We don't run out of hot water.

power star 125
4 Star Review   Home Depot

Excellent unit i like that i don't have to wait anymore for my hot water to come. Every one in the household could take a shower and there will always be hot water no matter how long of a shower u take. Also the size of the unit is very small and lite so it won't take up space. Is a good energy saver. Dislike: if you don't know about electrical i don't recommend installing it your self.u must have enough amprage coming into the main electric panel a least 200amp which the book does not mention. And also your elec. Panel must have enough space for the breakers 3 40 amp breakers.always use higher gage wire. Plumbing is very simple. P.s make sure your elec. Panel could hold it or you will poping you main breaker.
