Worthwhile addition to any home.
5 Star Review   By JohnC on Home Depot - Jun 11, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

This product performs as advertised and contained everything needed except the wire needed from the inlet box to the switch. I am not an electrician but have done wiring such as outlets and switches in my home. As indicated in the instructions it is important to plan which circuits will be wired to the switch and to balance the load between the two sides of the switch. Watching the installation video should help you in determining if this is something you feel comfortable doing. It helped me to decide to go forward with the installation. Upon completing the installation I started the generator and plugged it in. I went inside and one by one threw the transfer switches. Everything was working as expected. To be sure all essential circuits were running through the switch I turned off my 200 amp circuit breaker from commercial power. Needless to say it worked great and no extension cords anywhere.

Reliance 10 Circuit Manual Transfer Switch, easy install
5 Star Review   By diyer on Home Depot - Jun 5, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

This switch was easy to install, and took about 2 hours. Add another 2 hours to organize which circuits I was going to put on the switch out of the 20 in the main box. Simply installed the switch next to main box, ran a 240 line out to the remote generator connector (supplied), and then pulled each of the 10 circuits and wire nutted them into the switch. Very easy, well made, good instructions, including a DVD.

5 Star Review   By BudU on Home Depot - May 17, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

This manual transfer switch kit comes with everything you need to get set up and going. The directions are clear and easy to follow and guide you through the process from planning to installing to operating. The quality of the workmanship and the materials is outstanding. All you need is confidence in your ability to follow directions. Tech support is available and helpful. Some suggestions for do-it-yourselfers like me: 1. If you need to drill through concrete blocks to install the power inlet, long masonry drill bits are the way to go. Buy one. 2. When removing the "knockout" in the service panel to attach the feed from the transfer switch, the wrong size knockout came out (too big). Not to worry- there is a "donut" available to fill the space and securely attach the connector to the service panel.

It was not available out of the local venues here after the winter we just went through. Now, all I need to do is finish the installation. This is one product I would highly recommend.

Transfer switch Easy project
4 Star Review   By David on Home Depot - Mar 28, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

The transfer switch was an easy project that takes a couple hours to install and some labor to pull wire to the included outdoor generator plug. I ordered the flush mount kit. The instructions were wrong. It calls for a 10x17 hole in the wall. 10 inches is too wide. I had to make a shim to get the thing installed. Cut your hole no wider than 9 inches. Wires were long enough but since I powered two boxes I could have used a bit more in a couple instances. I think we are ready for spring.

Made in Good Old USA
5 Star Review   By Garry on Home Depot - Mar 19, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

I recently purchased and installed the 10 circuit transfer switch from reliance. I haven't incurred a power failure to test the system in operation so this review is pre-emergency. This transfer switch was purchased to use with my Generac 5500 watt portable generator. I have high praise for this switch and was elated to find it was made in the United States. The fit and finish is excellent as are the quality of the materials used. The installation was a breeze because of the lucid instructions of the enclosed DVD. Of course their example was under optimum conditions of installation i.e. new panel and easy access, which is seldom the case in the real world, mine anyway, it took a bit longer but the process was exactly the same. If you follow their instructions to the T and use insulated tools as an added precaution you should encounter no problems. But always be aware the service cable is still hot even after the main switch is off. Use extreme caution if you're near the main buss. With this in mind its a real easy installation. I can say, that I'm somewhat anxious for a power failure, did I really say that!, to see how all this system works. I have full confidence in it. Great quality product, made in the USA.

Product was as expected but broken
2 Star Review   By Drew on Home Depot - Mar 19, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

Recieved product. Installed it next day at customers house and both bottom transfer switches were broken. The felt sloppy and made no actual connection in the box after testing. Rather than trying to dispute it since it was installed and not easy to take out now, I went to a local supply house to purchase two new switches and install them

Excellent product!
5 Star Review   By Bill on Home Depot - Feb 20, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

This transfer switch kit is really well-designed, well built, easy and straight-forward to install. Instructions are easy to follow, and the kit includes a DVD to make it even easier. It has six 15-amp 120-volt circuits, and four 20-amp 120-volt circuits that come joined into two 20-amp, 240-volt circuits. For my installation, I don't really need the 240-volt circuits for the short period I expect to run the generator, so this provides ten 120-volt circuits. This allows me the flexibility of powering about 1/2 the circuits in my house. It actually took much longer to decide what critical units I want to power, determine their power needs (# watts) and then allocate them to the right or left side of the switch, to maintain a balanced load for the generator, than it took to install the switch. I had only one issue; connecting into my main breaker panel, the last circuit I connected had a wire shorter than the others, but it had the furthest to go (my main panel is very tall, and that last circuit is at the top of the panel). So the last wire is a bit stretched over the unused area of the panel. It's a bit annoying; can't figure out why they didn't make all wires the same long length. Beyond that, it's a very professional-looking installation (I'm not an electician), and I had the 7500-watt generator running most of the house last weekend, as a trial-run. Very happy.

Excellent Product
5 Star Review   By Arvind on Home Depot - Feb 12, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

I ordered this product online (Reliance 10 ckt transfer switch)from Home Depot as a kit. It was delivered on time and the product is very well built. Real solid with very good installation DVD and instruction sheet. The reason I bought the 10 ckt switch instead of 6 ckt switch was that once wired up, I could choose whatever appliance/ outlet in the house that I wanted. However it is left to me to balance the load properely. I have a 7500kw generator. I used Romex cable ( 10/3 AWG with ground) to connect from the inlet box, mounted outside the house, to the transfer switch. This is installed next to the main ckt box inside my basement. Note: the Romex cable is pretty heavy and stiff to install. Please note it needs to be mounted close to the main breaker box. The individual wires to be connected between the transfer switch and the main breaker box have been appropriately marked but the print on the wires is difficult to read. I had to use magnifying glasses to properely read them. I still need to test this out.

Prompt shipping. Instructional video very well done. I was thinking of hiring an electrician until I saw the video. No problems with the installation. Only took about one and a half hours to connect switchover box to the main circuit breaker panel. Haven't needed to use it yet, but I feel better knowing it's there.

Easy installation, fast delivery, sturdy product
5 Star Review   By Timmy on Home Depot - Feb 12, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

The transfer switch is very solid and weighty. The construction seems very good and they didn't skimp. The lengths of the wires were good, I had to cut most of them down to size and none were too short. The written instructions are very easy to understand which is a rarity these days. The included DVD was excellent, it showed every step involved in the installation. The video should spend a little more time on the dangers of working in an open electrical panel even when the main breaker is off, you can kill yourself instantly if you make the wrong mistake. You can find this video on the company's website if you want to see what in involved before buying it. With this transfer switch you cannot change the circuit breakers. You get six single pole 15 amp and four single pole 20 amp circuits. You can connect two of the 20 amp or two of the 15 amp switches if you want to power a double pole circuit. If the six 15A and four 20A circuits fit the needs of the circuits that you want to power then this switch is good for you. If you need more or less of the 15A or 20A circuits then you should get a different transfer switch that allows you to customize the breakers. Also keep in mind that the 30A rating on this transfer switch does not mean that there is a 30A circuit in the switch. It just means that the transfer switch can handle 7500 watts of power (if your generator has a 30A outlet then it will work with this switch). The watt meters in this switch are very small and are hard to read. It will give you a general idea of the power consumption but I don't think they are very precise. Their most important function is to tell you if you are balancing the power load on each side of the switch (circuits A-E are on the left side and F-J are on the right). If you really want to know how much power your appliances are consuming, get a handheld watt meter. If you use the handheld watt meter around your house before you buy a generator it will give you a good idea of how much power you need and it will help you get the right size generator. The 10ft. Cord was too short for my needs since my power inlet box is close to some windows. I ordered a longer one. If your inlet box isn't near a door or window then 10 feet might be fine but I would guess that most people would want a longer length of cord. I would have paid more for a kit that came with a longer one. Keep security in mind also, you might want to have you generator near something that you can lock it to so it doesn't disappear when you need it most and what you lock it to might not be next to the inlet box. You will need to buy some 10AWG or 8AWG building wire to attach the transfer switch to the inlet box. 10AWG wire is orange, 8AWG is black. You need to buy 4 fasteners (wood screws or masonry) to attach the transfer switch to the wall and 3 fasteners to attach the inlet box to the outside of your home. You also need 2 wire clamps, one to attach the building wire to the knockout in the transfer switch and another for the knockout in the inlet box. You will probably also need some clamps to attach the building wire to the walls and/or ceilings when running it from the transfer switch to the inlet. Depending on your municipality and where you run the building wire, you may also need conduit. Overall this is a very good transfer switch. I could have ordered it from an online-only store and not paid tax but I didn't want to ship it back if there was a problem. By ordering it online from Home Depot I knew I could return it to my local store. The online price at Home Depot was very competitive anyway. Home Depot delivered it quickly despite being backordered. Installation was very easy and my transfer switch works. I am very satisfied with the purchasing experience and the product. When the next power outage hits, the party is at my house.

Couldn't have been easier
5 Star Review   By David on Home Depot - Jan 25, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

Bought this kit and installed it in about an hour. It took longer to figure out which circuits to power with the switch than it took to install the transfer switch. Balancing the loads was easy with the instructions but the power examples were off a bit. I bought a power meter and checked the things that were plugged in to be more accurate but you can do without that if needed. The installation DVD was a great addition to the written directions. Anyone with basic home electrical know-how can do this. Just make sure the main power is off and remember that if your main breaker is on the electrical panel - the top of the box is still live where the power connections are made. In my area, the main breaker is outside at the meter so the entire box is dead when that is turned off.

After going through the super storm, here in jersey--and not having power for 6 1/2 days, and then getting it back shortly---it went out again for 2 + days with a 10" snow fall I finnally came across with a generator. Now i have heat and l have lights again. I am using my old hot tub wireing (big savings ) and hooked it up, with a little help of a friend. Works great. I did installed, the recepticle outside. Easy hookup.

Watched the installation video on the Reliance webstie before I purchased.Home Depot price was about 150 bucks cheaper than anyone eleses.Went with the 10 circut model, used all single pole configuration. It took longer to drill 4 holes to mount the box than it did to wire it to the panel.EVERYTHING is included except 10-3 cable for remote box. If you can wire a light switch or an outlet, you can do this Works as advertised

Great value, good instructions for average homeowner. Only issue was that after complete install one circuit did not work. Had to remove cover and found several loose connectors inside. Snapped them back on and everthing worked great but it cost me an extra hour of troubleshooting.

Simple install. If you have gfci or afci, then read.
5 Star Review   By Dee99ta on Home Depot - Jan 15, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

Overall, the video was helpful along with some reading online. Note that you lose the gfci function of your circuits when running the switch. It does says this in the manual. However, you will still have power to them. I got concerned when I first tested it out and the afci breakers tripped. However, you will still get power from the generator. Now, I have a good backup option to power my home essentials. As a reference, I paired mine with a Northern Tool Powerhouse 9000 generator and had no issues running all 10 circuits. Microwave, lights, garage door openers, central heat, fridge and freezer. It seemed to max out at 5KW.

Good quality
5 Star Review   By Daniel on Home Depot - Jan 15, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

Material and workmanship seem high quality, durable, and the kind of quality you'd expect for the price. Everything you need to safely tie in a generator to your house electrical including great instructions and video. Also, price (although seemingly a bit high) was best around - to include internet pricing.

Ready for the next Power Outage.
5 Star Review   By GiJoe on Home Depot - Jan 14, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

So it turns out I had to wait a while (like a good majority of you, after Sandy) to get a hold of this device. I ordered a 10-circuit kit (for a 8000W generator) and a transfer switch by itself for a 10kW unit. First I mounted the unit on a plywood panel (relatively easy to do) and then I did all the wiring myself. I have never done any electrical installation myself, so that being said, the accompanying installation info, and the DVD was a great help. Also, there are other detailed installation videos on YouTube which can be referred to. A few pics of the 8000W unit installation is included herein. After installation, I had an electrician look at the installation and certified that it was done correctly. I highly recommend this product for the quality, and price.

Check Internal Connections
4 Star Review   By FrankM on Home Depot - Jan 10, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

After completing installation, about half of the circuits to be transferred were not powered. After some grief of checking over the installation and cabling, it turned out that about half of the slide-on connections internal to the transfer switch were not connected - either through very rough handling or because of an incomplete final assembly operation check.

Although it does take longer than the one hour it may suggest (plan on three and that is with a good electrical background) it is a great unit and gives me peace of mind for the next long term electrical outage. The meters on the unit are a great idea!

Simple for an experienced do-it-yourself person to install. Good instructional DVD.
5 Star Review   By Ted70 on Home Depot - Jan 2, 2013    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

The installation was straightforward given that I'm relatively at ease with working inside the breaker panel. I had to shorten the 18" piece of flexible conduit to 12" by simply unwrapping 6" of it and snipping it off. The enclosed instructional DVD was a big help and confidence builder. The length of the wires was more than ample, even if I had had a much larger breaker panel. I haven't yet attached a fired up generator to it to see if I got everything right, but I'm fairly confident that it will work as planned. The included 10 foot extension cord is only just adequate for the installation, so I ordered a Generac 50 foot extension cord ($150) to give me flexibility in placement of the generator.

4 Star Review   By MishawakaK on Home Depot - Dec 25, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

Overall very happy with this purchase -- does all I expected. Surprised it doesn't have a power input recep on the unit.... had to use a knockout and hard wire directly in. Heard that is a federal regulation now? Other than that, came with everything in one box: Transfer Switch with 10 circuits (I removed one jumper link and used 8 single and one 240v). External 30 amp recept 10' 10/4 cord with Male / Female molded on. As I wanted a longer cord to keep my generator further away from the house, I had to buy: Longer cord, 30 amp plug (for generator), 30 amp female to plug into recep (ouch) plugs alone were $70 total. Install took quite a while, probably more time spent configuring and deciding where and how..... the actual connecting took maybe 2-3 hours. Ran 3/4" gray pvc stuff through the wall, to the hard wire knockout on the unit. Oh, one more thing -- as it was listed as on backorder, all the 'other sites' to bid on items, they were going for higher costs than listed here, because they had them in stock -- well so did Home Depot! Order it and it will arrive quicker than you think! Well worth it!

Excellent product for portable generator owners
5 Star Review   By gizmo6 on Home Depot - Dec 18, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

Our first use of a portable generator was during a 9 day power outage caused by hurricane Sandy. Having dealt with extension cords, and a need to plug and unplug various appliances, there had to be a better way. After searching the internet I found the Reliance 30 Amp 10 Circuit transfer switch. Home depot had the best price and is a trusted source, I was disappointed that I could only order it online but recieved it within 5 days. I chose this switch because it provides flexibility in circuit operation which allows me to manage my power needs in various seasons (i.e. in the summer I don't need my furnace blower running but it would be nice to run a room air conditioner.) The two watt meters allow the user to see that the load is balanced. I suggest that anyone contemplating installing a transfer switch to first take the time to identify every appliance, outlet and light on every breaker in the main load center. The second thing to do is to check the name plates of refrigerators, freezers, furnace blowers, and pumps; while there are plenty of "guides to appliance wattage" for planning purposes, I found most of the suggested wattages were much higher than mine. If the name plate doesn't show watts; simply multiply the listed AMPS times the voltage. Example Refrigerator name plate states 5.0 AMPS and 115 volts = 575 watts. This will help to balance loads on the transfer switch during installation. The product is sturdy, all steel construction, and all of the wires are labled. Installation instructions are included as well as an instructional CD. It should take about an hour to install. If you'll be working in a place where natural light is not available don't forget to fire up the generator and plug in a work light. I highly recommend this product to anyone using a portable generator during power outages. Once installed all you'll have to do is plug the generator into the transfer switch inlet, start the generator, and select the circuits you want to power.

I always do a lot of research before I make a large purchase like this. Once I decided on this transfer switch kit, it was just a matter of finding one after hurricane Sandy left supplies scarce. I had an electrician install this kit and show me how to use it. Coupled with my 7500 watt portable generator, I can power most of my house besides central air, dryer, and a couple other unimportant circuits. This kit is a great value compared to buying the components separately.

Easy enough to install
5 Star Review   By Jeff on Home Depot - Dec 18, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

I bought this with my new Briggs generator.. I found it extremely easy to install.. I never watched the DVD.. I did see it done on youtube but you really don't need to see much.. Pull the wire out of the breaker.. wire nut it to the the wire from the transfer switch.. put the matching wire from the switch into the breaker.. do this 10 times... I did separate the ganged breakers as I didn't need any 240 volt circuits.... If it had a few more circuits to it I could have used a few... but most of my essentials are powered up now..... done.. I did install install the generator outlet on the side of my house.. that was also easy enough.. since it was an outside wall in my basement.. so no need to snake the wires through walls..just drilled a hole through... I used 50 feet of 3-8 cable to get to the transfer switch.. a little pricey but worth it... I have only tested everything.. haven't needed it for an emergency yet... but I don't expect any problems.. The only things I wont have powered will be my range... I powered a few of my spare bedrooms instead.. but I may change that to the stove instead...

Transfer switch is easy to install if you have some basic knowledge of electricity and not afraid to go into the panel. But by all means if not comfortable seek professional help. Ran a test the product preformed well. It should have come with a longer extension cord 10' is to short should have come with the 25' cord.

Pro item with a do-it-yourself install
5 Star Review   By NJGuy on Home Depot - Dec 12, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

I purchased this item for use with a large 7500 watt portable generator. This kit came with the 10 circuit transfer switch, a 30 amp cord, the 30 amp power inlet box & an instilation CD (which I didn't even need because the paper instructions were crisp & clear!). All you need is a little of planning ahead of time. Planning out which circuits you will need, calculating the wattage and calling your electrical inspector as to find out if you will need conduit for the 10-3 from the switch to the inlet box outside (which was needed for me). Don't forget your electrical duct conduit seal! All the branches of red and black wires were labeled VERY clearly...A thru J. Can't go wrong. I did, however, encounter a small problem which required somewhat quick thinking. I used a 1" KO at the bottom of my panel and fed the plethera of red, black, white & green wires thru. My 200 amp panel breakers were all at the TOP of my panel and the red transfer switch wires were not long enough to reach them. Luckily I had 10 new breakers on hand, so I just pulled the old ones and put the new breakers at the bottom of the pannel so that the red transfer wires could all reach the proper breakers. After that, A-J went quickly. The 10-3 wire in conduit was easy to run thru any of the 3 available KO's to any of the 4 KO's on the power inlet box mounted outside. Duct seal, conduit and exterior screws completed the install. Afterall, I am very satisified with the product. I am also glad that I got this 10 circuit item vs the 6 circuit one. 3 various lighting circuits, furnace, sump pump, 2 TV circuits, internet and 2 refrigerators. Took the handle ties off so the two 20amp double poles are now two single poles. Had no use for double pole circuits in my case. As for the item itself...the metal box was not damaged; wires were not frayed at all; nothing bent; overall very sturdy product. I am not an electrician so install, testing & clean-up took roughly 5 hours...and I took my time. Next hurricane/superstorm I will be ready, thanks to Reliance!

5 Star Review   By ToolMan on Home Depot - Dec 11, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

This is a very well built, high quality, made in the USA product. Instructions were complete and understandable. It installed easily and operates as advertised. I have two adjacent power panels so replaced the supplied flexible conduit with PVC conduit, routing some circuits to the left panel and some to the right. This device fit neatly between the panels and the wires were long enough to go everywhere I needed. I couldn't be more satisfied.

Very simple to install and operate for a manual system.
5 Star Review   By EJRegnu on Home Depot - Dec 11, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

This switch was definitely designed for easy installation. Everything was included in the kit with the exception of cable from the transfer switch to the outside power inlet box. The instructions were very clear and easy to understand. I never did watch the included DVD, as it was not necessary. If you have an existing breaker panel that has sufficient room in near proximity, it's a pretty easy job. It took me a total of about 4 hours, including running the cable to the power inlet box and driving a new ground rod for the generator (ground rod not included). As long as you are not uncomfortable working around an open breaker panel, this is a good one-day project. Finally, I would recommend buying a clamp-on ammeter to actually measure the current required for the circuits you are going to cover with your generator. The power consumption in the instructions give a guide to how much power each appliance/device will draw, but everything is different in actual practice. I found that was the case in my installation and it helped in balancing the system.

Excellent Transfer Switch -- Highly Recommend!!
5 Star Review   By HL200 on Home Depot - Dec 7, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

After reading reviews on the Reliance transfer switch and some of the competitor's products, I decided to purchase the Reliance transfer switch, and I was not disappointed. I liked the fact that this was a kit that has everything you need. The only exception is the building wire to run between the transfer switch and the power inlet box. In my case, the breaker box is located in the rear of my garage, so I needed about 30 feet of cable to wire up the power inlet box where the generator gets plugged in. Documentation was excellent. In addition to printed documentation, there is also a very helpful video that is both on DVD as well as online. I did have a question, and found the Tech Support folks at Reliance to be extremely knowledgeable. They promptly answered the phone, understood the issue, and offered helpful guidance. One extra is that the transfer switch comes equipped for six 15A circuits and four 20A circuits. I wanted to use seven 15A circuits and three 20A circuits...one call to Customer Service, and they sent me an additional 15A breaker that I could do an even exchange for the 20A breaker. My only comment is that the transfer switch is surface mount, and I have a recessed breaker box. It was not clear how to route the conduit between the boxes in this configuration. I was able to get a solution from Tech Support, but perhaps this can be added to the documentation. I would definitely recommend this product for anyone who has a portable generator for their home. This is SO much better than tripping over extension cords running through the hallways.

Nice setup and easy to install with pretty much everything you need for the complete installation. The one fault is that you'll find some leads are too short to reach some breakers, so have some extra wire for splicing, you'll probably need it.

This transfer switch kit is simple to install with a little basic electrical knowledge . Just be careful when working in your service panel, and take your time....The supplied 10ft. 30 amp, cable and input connector box are top quality ...The only thing negative would be the length of the BX cable with the supplied leads, it should be another 6 inches longer for situations that may need more in order to reach panels that have little room surrounding them, as in my case....

5 Star Review   By doubl07hoo on Home Depot - Nov 21, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

The one negative I found was that it is advertised as a 30 amp transfer switch, which I think refers to cord from genorator to the plug. I thought it would have a 30 amp breaker that could run my hot water heater but it only has a 20 Amp breaker, so now I have water (pump) but cant have hot water, very dissapointed in this but will serve its purpose wish I had researched this a little more.... this is how it is advertised.... "Reliance Controls 30-Amp 10-Circuit Transfer Switch ". The finer print says 2-20amp which I did not look at. Please note also that you need a wire to run from transfer box to outside plug ( we used10-3 UF) this is not included. Hopefully now I will never need to use which means no bad weather!

I installed this after hurricane Irene last year, when sandy came this year, I plugged the cable into the generator and the receptacle, flipped a few switches and lit up the whole house while others maxed out their extension cords and generator outlets mine was just plug and play. I found other places had rediculously high prices while home depot was the cheapest. Reasonably simple to install prob from 1-5 for difficulty with 5 being the most difficult, I'd rate it at 2 for difficulty

5 Star Review   By Scott on Home Depot - Nov 4, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

This is one of those things, that if you do not have one, you're out of your mind. For a few hundred bucks, all you need to do after install, is start your generator, plug it into the box on your house and flip a few switches. I lost power due to Sandy for about 36 hours, but my life continued on being normal. Add an over the air TV antenna, since cable or fios will be out too, and you're all set. Now is the time to do this if you haven't already. Life is full of annoyances, and no electric is arguably one of the biggest ones. With this product, no power is a thing of the past.

Easy to install
5 Star Review   By glagace on Home Depot - Oct 30, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

After purchasing my house the first thing I did was to setup my electrical system in case of power outages. I got estimates from local electricians and it was between $900 and $1100. After reading several other reviews stating how easy it was to install I decided to purchase it and give it a try. The most important part is the planning, I took the time to out through each circuit to determine the load (the supplied work sheet helps with this) then created an excel spreadsheet that stated each circuit number on the main pannel to the circuit letter on the transfer switch along with the load and location. Using tape I then assigned each letter to the actuall circuit. Once that was done, making the connections was quick and easy. Took less than an hour, and I checked each wire 2 or more times to be safe. I was quickly able to test the generator on the system and it worked flawlessly. This weekend SANDY came roaring in and I was able to setup the generator in just minutes and waited it out knowing my family would be safe.

I have limited electrical experience and it only took me 30 minutes to wire it to the panel. It took longer to mount the switch to the wall than to do the wiring. The switch itself is very beefy and well made, and comes with everything you need for the installation. On my switch I used one of the barred, two 20 amp circuits for my well pump. I removed the other bar to have two single 20 amp circuits, one to power my refridgerator, and the other to power my kitchen. With the six remaining 15 amp circuits, I powered my furnace, three bedrooms, family room/hall/bathroom, and the garage. Basically my whole house. I'm now ready for the next power outage.

Due to the physical layout of my utiltiy room, it took longer to mount it than to connect it to my 200 amp circuit box. Once installed, it performed as advertised.

East to install, Kit includes everything but 10/3 wire
5 Star Review   By Mike on Home Depot - Aug 14, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

This 10 circuit transfer switch is a must...the 6 circuit won't allow you to power all your essential circuits. Spend the extra $60 or so and get the 10 circuit. ANYONE with moderate technical skill can install this from simply following the video. If you're using the remote receptacle, you'll need 10/3 Romex cable. Also, if you don't need all four 20amp circuits breakers it comes with, simply contact the company and they'll send you 15amp breakers and directions on how to swap them out. If you're unsure of anything during the install, you can call there techs!

A quality product! A "must" for using a portable generator for power outages.

I saw this product installed during an episode of "Ask This Old House" on PBS. This 10-circuit transfer switch was only available from Home Depot on line. Only the 6-circuit version is availabe at the store or Lowe's. The kit includes the transfer switch, an outdoor power inlet box, 10-ft 30-amp power cord and detailed installation instructions----including an installation DVD. The transfer switch is suitable for circuits of 20-amps or less and thus cannot be used to power an electric water heater. Installation was straightforward. It can be accomplished by a DIYer with a modest amount of knowledge of electrical wiring.

I looked at a few different solutions to connect my generator to my panel and make it easy to have back up power when we lose power. this was the most complete kit I found and was extremely easy to install.

Buy the kit instead of individual components

Great match for the Ridgid 6800 or 8000 watt generators. This switch says in its on line description that it handles 7500 watts max. But, checking FAQ's on Reliance website confirms it is made for up to 8000 like the Ridgid. It even says 8000 on the box it comes in.It comes with 10 circuits, 6- 15 amp and 4-- 20 amp. I needed 8 -15 amp. So I called Reliance and they were happy to send me 2 more 15 amp if i would please return the 2 unneedeed 20 amp. they are easily swapped. The load meters help you balance the load between the 2 sides of the switch. Just balance your higher load circuits such as refrigerators or washers evenly as possible between left and right when wiring to your breaker panel. It comes with a DVD. The actual wiring time is literally maybe a half hour with 2 people. more time will be spent planning your install, deciding which circuits to power, mounting your outlet on the outside of the house and running romex to your switch from the outlet.Everything is included.you'll just need a length of Romex. I was lucky and the switch fit perfectly next to my breaker panel on the same plywood it was already mounted to.

With all the recent 2012 storm power outages, this is the clean safe way to power up your home. I installed the kit 8 yrs ago, and have recommended it to many friends. Forget running all those extension cords! Watch the Alliance install video - you can do it yourself.

One of the ten circuit breakers was broken and did not work!
4 Star Review   By 99999MD on Home Depot - Apr 25, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

I have installed a 8 ciruit transfer switch before without a problem, but this installation was slowed down due to defective breaker. Did not realize the breaker was defective until after the installation was completed and applied power - breaker would not reset.

Just what I was looking for
5 Star Review   By kerkdani on Home Depot - Apr 24, 2012    ( See more reviews from Home Depot )

Very easy to install and works as advertised. If you can change a circuit breaker, you can do this. The 8 circuit version might be suitable for most people and is cheaper, but I wanted the versatility of having the extra circuits and was willing to pay for it. The trick is to plan ahead which circuits you will really need during a power outage so that when you install the product you know which ones to hook up to transfer switch.
