Great Looking Tread
4 Star Review   By Dano on Home Depot - May 14, 2013

I ordered 15 treads and was supremely happy with 13 of them. They were absolutely gorgeous pieces of wood. One tread had a nick on the bullnose where there had been a knot. I used it anyway. Another tread split as I pressed it into place during installation.

Just As Ordered!!
5 Star Review   By Suits2 on Home Depot - May 10, 2013

The oak retreads were just as we ordered. Once stained, they were stunning. The retreads were excellent in quality & easy to install. Our staircase has never looked more beautiful. Would definitely recommend these retreads to anyone interested in achieving a gorgeous staircase and not having to spend your life's savings.

Great product! Would use again!!
4 Star Review   By Lithium67 on Home Depot - May 7, 2013

Love these retreads. Quality of product is very good. Minimal If any imperfections. I bought 14 treads to cover over pine stairs that originally were covered in carpet. I stained them to match our hardwood floors and painted the sides of the stairs and the painted new risers for a very contrast look. Will post pictures later. Product was very consistent.

A wonderful way to make your old stairs beautiful!
5 Star Review   By bonbons on Home Depot - Mar 19, 2013

I didn't realize there was a product that would cover my old painted wooden steps and make them look so beautiful. The oak is very nice, and the retro steps are of high quality. Easy to install, and I would recommend them highly to anyone who wants to change their old ugly steps.

Excellent quality and craftsmanship evident in this product.
5 Star Review   By stlomoser on Home Depot - Mar 5, 2013

My stairs were covered with sheet vinyl and metal stair nosings. We wanted a more formal look to our staircase, but because it is a heavy traffic area, we really did not want to carpet the stairs. I tried to remove the vinyl with no luck. We looked at several types of wood overlays for the steps, some were very expensive. We decided on the unfinished solid red oak Stairtek tread overlay from Home Depot and I have not regretted it one bit. The treads are of high quality, beautiful red oak and mind you, they are solid wood, not plywood with a thin oak veneer. They are made from several oak boards edge-glued together to limit cupping and warping and the bullnose and attached inside cove are mortised into the tread as a one piece molding. The enclosed instructions show 3 different ways of installing the treads and risers, two require you to cut off your existing bullnose, the other does not. I chose to cut off the bullnose so my treads would not extend beyond the skirt board. The look is fantastic, the price was one third what some of the other overlays cost. I am well pleased with my purchase.

Awesome Product
5 Star Review   By jane on Home Depot - Feb 17, 2013

We recently redid our flooring to all hardwood. The stairs obviously had to be redone also. However our stairs are built really oddly and taking the treads off to put on new ones would have meant dismantling the walls. So we moved on to re-treads. We've done both our staircases with these and are super pleased. These are the perfect thickness because they almost perfectly match the height of the carpet that was removed. Other similar products were too thick. Also these are solid hard wood, no plywood or particleboard anywhere. They are very easy to stain and take the stain evenly. We installed them ourselves with very little trouble (and we are no experts). I was a little concerned the front nose part would break off during cutting but it is on there tightly. The front piece is quite sturdy and never chipped or broke on any piece. Overall they look great and cost literally a small fraction of what redoing the staircases would have cost. There was very little mess and doing it ourselves took up a weekend per staircase. I highly recommend these treads for anyone redoing their stairs!!

Great solution for an impossible problem.
5 Star Review   By Suebeeee on Home Depot - Jan 29, 2013

When we renovated our basement, we took off all the glued down carpeting covering the floor and stairs. The carpet was easy to remove from the floor but the stairs became a job from Hades. After scraping glue, sanding, etc., we were told by our contractor to recarpet the stairs...the only area in the house that would have carpet. When I came upon these stair treads, I ordered one set (treads and risers) and the measuring tool (ESSENTIAL). My husband and I managed to cut all the treads and risers IN ONE DAY! Of course it took a few days more to properly polyurethane them for use, but this became one of the easiest project we have done in our renovation.

Great alternative to a complete stair install.
5 Star Review   By Danny on Home Depot - Nov 2, 2012

I used the retreads on plain 2"X10"s after removing carpet. The were easy to install and high quality. I especially liked being able to still use my stairs while I polyurethaned the treads and then simply secured them over the existing treads.

Overall satisfied
4 Star Review   By Marginal on Home Depot - Oct 23, 2012

My stair is not straight up and down, with 90 degree turn at both ends. There is nowhere I can find a oak board with same height to fill in the extra space in the 5 steps where turn happens. Called manufature, was told that they could only suggest to buy extra treads, which would mean 5 more pieces in order to achieve consistent grain pattern. Called stairtek (distributor), Kuma agreed to plane their 3/4 inch riser down to 5/8" and sell without extra charge. That was a big relief. Overall quality is fine, with minor cracks occasionally. I'm hoping that they could sell the 5/8" board in the future, I have one more case to work on.

Great price excellent quality
5 Star Review   By FarmMom on Home Depot - May 22, 2012

Constructed of strips of oak making it more visually interesting. Husband says they are too nice. Other family are considering for their steps. Moulding hangs down 1.25 in easily masking old tread and riser join. Requires urethane adhesive, not water-based. Had to go to Menards since local hardware store did not carry urethane. Love this product.

Overall, a great product
4 Star Review   By Jeff on Home Depot - Feb 28, 2012

I bought the unfinished treads so that I knew I could match the existing woodwork and skirt boards. I pre-finished each tread with 4 coats of oil based poly during the week and had them ready to go for a Saturday installation. I finished the entire staircase (10 treads and 11 risers) in about 8 hours. I have a 12" sliding miter saw and a portable table saw and I believe both were necessary for this job, if you want it to look right. The treads held up well to cutting and handling and came essentially ready to finish. I did run a quick 220 grit over each tread and wiped them with linseed oil ahead of finishing. Since they don't have a bullnose with the same scotia molding, I ordered an extra tread and ripped it down to replace the bullnose on the top landing.

Great Product
5 Star Review   By Annie on Home Depot - Dec 6, 2011

Placed an online order for the Stairtek System and it arrived the very next day. The red oak threads and poplar risers look beautiful after staining and painting. I had them installed by a carpenter, because it is a little more difficult to do (for me) than what the video shows. Anyway, my stairs look beautiful and would recommend this product to anyone who wants to improve the look of their home. Ann

Good Idea, good price and delivery, so-so quality
3 Star Review   By BkrB on Home Depot - Dec 5, 2011

Purchased 16 of these to replace old carpet in 2 stairways. The idea is great, the stair heights were nearly perfect after the install. Extremely solid after I glued to new treads to the stringers and risers. Disappointed in the choice of lumber and some of the finishing. There are few treads that had 'near' knots, interesting pattern, but hard to fill with finish. These pieces shouldn't have been used. In addition, some treads had great variation within the tread after staining, almost stripey. Two treads had 3/8" damage across the grain, looks like some sort handling device was used on the finished side. A lame attempt at filling was made at the factory, I had to dig it out and do it right. Even after repairing properly, these were a little obvious. For my 'regular old house' rehab, these were 'OK' after some filling and sanding. For high end, look for better quality. Order extras in case of problems or mismatches.

What a great product
5 Star Review   By waltzjump on Home Depot - Nov 8, 2011

Be warned that when you retread stairs, every step is a custom job. That said, with patience you can save a ton of money using this product and doing it yourself. Last night I completed my stairs. I painted the stair well, refloored the entry, finished the treads & risers, and installed them in about two months. I did this on weekends and a couple hours after work on weeknights. The retread is of quality red oak and the bullnose is a bit fancy, which is nice. I did have to return two of the treads for new ones because they had nicks, but Home Depot was great and exchanged them with no problem. I returned them to the store & they shipped the replacements to me. I chose to have a friend cut the bullnoses off my exisiting stairs rather than mess with shimming, but I see no reason why they couldn't go over the full step. (You'll just have to shim behind the new riser so it will meet flushly.) I sanded them with 320 & then 400 grit paper. The treads took the natural stain beautifully and, in my opinion, look prettier than the prefinished options. I did the poly work before installing (under coats of clear gloss, top coat of semi gloss) and the trick to that was pop cans. In order keep the treads from sticking to the drop cloth, I just put two cans of Coke under the bullnose whilst they dried. As for cost savings, stairs are tedious so they're costly to have done professionally. The one company I found who would do it charges $125/tread to install -- not including materials. That's $1625 I saved by doing it myself and the great thing about these is that you CAN do it yourself. I'm a 5'4" woman. The only help I needed was a second pair of hands for safety as I cut the wood (and a friend to cut the bullnoses because the power hand tools for that are stronger than I.) I purchased the risers elsewhere, but my total cost for just the stair materials (retreads, risers, 1qt stain, 1qt clear polyurethan, 1qt semigloss, sandpaper, tack cloth, brushes, brads, PL adhesive, skeleton gun) was around $600.

Looks Great and Easy to Install
5 Star Review   By KristaDIY on Home Depot - Oct 12, 2011

I installed the retread and new risers right on top of the existing stair. With the use of the template, it was a really easy process. I was able to stain the stair and riser to my desired color and it truly looks as if it was professionally done. I would definitely recommend this product.

Easy to install, excellent value
5 Star Review   By amanda on Home Depot - Jul 20, 2011

These treads needed minimal sanding. I stained and did multiple coats of varnish before installing. With the proper tools (tread template, tape measure, glue, pneumatic nailer, table saw) cutting treads to size and installing was pretty easy. (On-line videos give useful installation tips.) We used with matching risers although white risers are an option. Stairs look beautiful and professionally done.

3 Star Review   By thelibertymann on Home Depot - Jan 22, 2011

an excellent value and it looks great. However, this product does not include the damper. This makes it more difficult to live with if there are any rooms you may not want to heat or you have an uneven heating system. In this environment of high heating costs, that is just bad eco-nomic sense.

Red Oak Retread is Nicely Made
4 Star Review   By krsmac on Home Depot - Jan 22, 2011

The unfinished red oak retread is well made, with a smooth surface ready for stain after light sanding. However, the retread is made up of four narrow boards, and it looks like a typical oak hardwood floor. I was looking for a uniform appearance offered by a single solid board and have decided not to use the retreads. On the other hand, if you are looking for a low cost way to replace carpeted stairs with hardwood, these retreads would be a great solution. Also, they are easily installed using a non-water based adhesive or mastic.

Beautiful Tread
4 Star Review   By KnowHowMatt on Home Depot - Oct 1, 2010

I ordered a couple of these treads to see how they would look on my basement stairs. They were beautiful - very tight grain with good consistent coloring. The only problem I ran into is that with the built in round-over and cove moulding, you're limited to a per-stair run of 10.25" - any longer and the back of this tread will not but up against the riser behind it, and any shorter and you'll be left with a gap between the moulded edge and the riser below it.
