1 Star Review   By member duaneg - Jul 20, 2013

Piece of junk. Had it for four months and it won't start. Front wheel drive is hard to handle and wheels just spin if grass is a little wet. I am totally disappointed with this mower. Recommend, don't waist your money.....

It's a good deal
5 Star Review   By Shazbaz on Home Depot - Jun 11, 2013

This mower has been excellent from the get go. Very easy to un-box and assemble. It starts with one pull every time. Motor seems very strong and this machine cuts very well as it drags me around the yard. I think this is a very good deal for the money - it costs me $25 to have my lawn mowed, I've already used it 3 times, 9 more and this baby's earned it's keep.

complete garbage and a worthless warranty
1 Star Review   By cliff on Home Depot - Jun 5, 2013

This mower has never worked correctly, hard to start, stalls often, now won't run at all. Toro customer service was useless and the rep listed all the things that are excluded from the warranty which is surprise surprise everything. I will never buy a Toro product again and will make sure to tell everyone I know to never buy their garbage either.

Don't waste your time
1 Star Review   By sticktohonda on Home Depot - Jun 5, 2013

I was very disappointed in this mower. Although it started immediately, if I ever had to turn the mower off, it would not start again for at least 45 minutes, in spite of its 3-year easy start guarantee. I kept the mower for several weeks, and it never improved, so I returned it.

Worse lawnmower I ever owned
1 Star Review   By 1m3b on Home Depot - Jun 4, 2013

Do not purchase this lawnmower. Does not start on the first pull. The bagging system is the worse, grass spits out of the top of the bag, bag does not fill completely, hard to empty and when you do excess grass spills out. I am on a budget so can't go out and get another but I will never purchase one again.

Good mower but what's up with the plastic wheels
4 Star Review   By Angie on Home Depot - Jun 4, 2013

I bought a new Toro in 2008 and loved it but it was a little too slow. Purchased this mower simply because it was a good price and faster than my old one. I was very surprised to see the plastic wheels. It's almost comical. If I had to mow on a slant or had a hill to go up I am pretty sure with a full bag of grass the mower's wheels would be spinning. I like my mower however one side of the blade must be longer than the other because it is hitting and scrapping on the inside of the mower. I actually had to take a knife and scrap the inside down a little more because of the loud noise it makes while it is scrapping. Overall it's a good mower except for the cheap wheels and the blade issue which I think is very unusual and would have been caught when it was being assembled had anyone started it.

Engine now shot ... used the mower maybe 20 hours
1 Star Review   By mjhhoops on Home Depot - Jun 4, 2013

Toro Recycler - Guaranteed to start, 22" 6.75...169cc. No priming bulb. I purchased this mower last June. It ran for me through early October when the "Guarantee" came up empty. Even when it ran, this mower didn't maneuver well. I was unable to start it sometime in October.. I was planning to go over the lawn one last time... mulch up some leaves etc. After researching etc, the theory seems to be old gas may have clogged jets in the carbeurator. This April I tried a new spark plug, and was able to start it after about 10-15 pulls. The mower then ran extremely slow before kicking in after maybe 3-5 minutes. (see video) Once it kicked in, I was able to mow my backyard (15 minutes). I moved to the front yard, and the mower started to sputter ... then died. Total operation time was possibly 20 minutes. I emptied out all gas, oil... and changed the air filter (which looked brand new). I didn't bother pulling apart the carbeurator. On Youtube videos... other mowers have a pretty simple screw that comes out easily, and you're able to run a thin wire through the jet... cleaning it. On this mower there are two screws beneath the bowl. Gas started leaking immediately when I attempted to remove them. Neither screw had a jet however. I wasn't about to attempt rebuilding a carbeurator... especially on a basically new mower. I quit for the day. I attempted to start the mower on 3 more occasions. I was able to start it a few times. The pattern repeated where it ran slowly... kicked in... I was then able to mow for 5-10 minutes... then again the mower sputtered & died. While the mower ran slowly... smoke came out of the exhaust... and oil burned up quickly. I refilled the oil once the mower kicked in. ================ I had someone check out the mower... hoping for an easy fix. He told me I had apparently burned out the engine. I'll never be able to get Toro/Kohler pay for a new mower. ================ All this being said... my previous Toro ran for about 10 years. I didn't realize how lucky I was. I had even broke the starter rope. I managed to thread it back on... but had to manually retract after starting. I was able to use the mower a good five years in this fashion. That Toro did have a primer bulb. I would leave the old mower in a shed... with gas in it... never worried about putting stabilizer in etc. I put in oil periodically. Pretty disappointing how fragile the newer lawn mowers are. I'm shopping for a lawn mower now... and all the poor reviews are scaring me off. We all might be better served paying for lawn services.

Great! (For one year)
1 Star Review   By Andy on Home Depot - May 22, 2013

Starts by the third pull but now in the second summer doesn't run longer than 30 seconds. Dropped $30 on spark plug, filter, carb cleaner, tools. (HD doesnt carry Kohler spark plugs, so had to go back til found one that roughly fits.) Now will cost a minimum of $100 to get professionally repaired. (Walmart has other brands for far less).

Toro quality is down the drain
1 Star Review   By crowbait on Home Depot - May 17, 2013

You used to be able to depend on brands, I found that no longer the case with Toro. I purchased this mower two years ago. I have replaced two of the self propelled transmissions and half the time the electric start does not work. The go as you do self propelled unit is terrible it does not work right and never has. Would never recommend this to my worst enemy.

"Guaranteed to start" lasted four months
2 Star Review   By Bill on Home Depot - May 9, 2013

Summary says it all. The guaranteed to start mower stopped starting after just a few months. I know what you are thinking, "it's under warranty," but silly me lost the receipt so I am up creek without a paddle. I get a 1 start for being an idiot. In addition to this, not a lot of people want to work on these for some reason so its tiresome and tedious to try and repair.

starting problems
1 Star Review   By Captaindon on Home Depot - May 4, 2013

After using the mower a dozen times, it would not start. Brought it to an authorized service center and they said the mowers don't like ethanol gas. They cleaned out the gas and charged me $81. Used it another six times with ethanol-free gas and again had trouble starting it when the engine was warm. Brought it in for service and they said it was dirty gas and charged me $66. Used it a few times and again had trouble starting. This time it's the choke. Dealer said that the automaitc choke is a constant problem on Toros. Should have bought a Honda.

Toro Recycler mulching lawn mower
5 Star Review   By Profesor on Home Depot - Apr 30, 2013

Starts on the first try. Runs smoothly and economical on gasoline. Easy to operate. A little inconvenient to adjust height since each tire has to be adjusted individually. Other than that, its an excellent mower.

Great mower
5 Star Review   By golflvr on Home Depot - Apr 29, 2013

As with others easy assembly and started on first pull. Did bog down a little in thick grass, but raised it up and ran great. Very similar to a Troy Built I've had for over 10 years, but better features. Love the auto prime. The wash hook up is another nice feature. The self propelling makes it feel as though your just on a stroll in the park.

Don't listen to bad reviews
5 Star Review   By Mike on Home Depot - Apr 26, 2013

I've had this mower for 4years now. It has an electric start but I never use it. It still cranks with the first pull. Keeping the battery charged to use the key start is more of a hassle than just pull starting. So this one will save you the extra money for electric start witch you don't need. Simply prime bulb 3 or 4 times then one pull and starts right up. Long as you assemble bag correctly, you will get a tight fit. If you use bag properly, clippings stay in bag. Like I said, I've had this mower 4 yrs. Still cranks with first pull. Still with same blades and bag. I walk behind this mower using one hand and wave at the neighbors with the other. The mower goes at your pace.

One thing to change
4 Star Review   By BobT on Home Depot - Apr 23, 2013

I have had my mower for almost a month and have used it several times already. So far, so good. It's easy to change the cutting height, check the oil and refill the gas tank. Starting is a dream- first pull and you're off! The ONLY thing so far that annoys me is the lack of a TIGHT fit for the grass catcher bag. I hate it when some grass "spits" out onto the deck and gets into those slots on the rear deflector. I am hoping that the current Toro models are as reliable as the older models were.

The cons outweighed the pros (for me)
2 Star Review   By HHG2 on Home Depot - Apr 18, 2013

I purchased this based on Toro's reputation as well as the ranking in Consumers Reports. This was to be a replacement for a 10 year old Craftsman mower (a 7.25 hp hoss of a mower I relegated for use at a rental property). Upon unboxing, I first noticed how flimsy the materials seemed. Assembly was quick and easy. Oil, gas, one pull and go! Unfortunately the trip was a downhill one, so to speak. Grass bits kept spitting at me during the entire mowing session from the top of the bag, where it fits against the rear discharge door. The bag itself rides at such a steep angle that it was impossible to remove without spilling out clippings. Also aggravating is the deflector inside the rear discharge door. It has deep, open cavities which catch clippings...all of which fall out (a good double hand full) when the door is allowed to close when emptying the small capacity bag. The engine consistently restarted with a single pull, but did seem to bog down several times (unlike its predecessor). The other dislike, which cemented my decision to return the mower for a refund, was the mowers habit of slightly wandering to one side or other, making a straight line cut very difficult. Although I only use this machine for trim work and a couple of yard areas difficult to cut with a rider, I had doubts that I would be pleased with the usability and was unsure of the longevity. I ended up returning the mower to Home Depot. I went to Sears and chose another Craftsman which has a Honda engine. I used it today. Easy start, didn't bog down, didn't spit grass at me, and it tracked straight without meandering. I guess time will tell whether or not it will match the long life of the mower it is replacing.

Poor Design and Quality
2 Star Review   By Bill on Home Depot - Mar 22, 2013

I bought 2 of these mowers with each not making it through one season. Both mowers had issues with the belt constantly coming off the front wheel drive mechanism. The pulley depth is too shallow for the belt and its location it too exposed to the mowing blade cuttings and most of the front wheel drive mechanism is cheap plastic. The undersurface of the mower deck is also partially plastic and easily cracks...which then signficantly affects grass discharge. The front wheels do not stay tight and constantly come off..( I had to carry several hand tools with me every time I mowed). The second mower developed a blown head gasket and I was meticulous about maintenance. For the money I spent on these two piles of junk I could of bought a much better mower. You live and learn I guess....

This brand new lawn mower will not start and nothing is easy to get to. You do not have a primer bulb and so there is nothing you can do. I am about to go take apart all the bolts and try to get at a carborater to try to get this to run. I hate this purchase.

5 Star Review   By marc on Home Depot - Dec 4, 2012

Got it for my 2 daughters who are away at college that live in a house that they have to take care of. haha Got this particular model because of its claim to pull start with one or two pulls. Apparently it starts pretty easily, as I haven't heard any complaints about it yet. They actually said it isn't so bad cutting the grass as they thought it would be.

So far...so good
4 Star Review   By copperjohn on Home Depot - Aug 22, 2012

I can say this for the unit...it started on the first pull right out of the box. I have only cut the lawn once since delivered and it sure will "move out" at the "fast" walk speed and the mulched clipping are much smaller than my old Toro clippings. It seems to really "power down" when cutting through patches where the grass might be a bit higher, but all in all, if it lasts 9 to 10 years like my old Toro lasted, I'll be thrilled.

One and Done with Toro
1 Star Review   By Massachusetts on Home Depot - Aug 6, 2012

I have owned a similar recycler mower for under 5 yrs that has been in the shop every season because the self propelled drive keeps locking up one of the wheels. Toro Customer Service has been useless. They talk a good line, but, it was never fixed. And now (just shy of 5 yrs) the whole self propelled system needs to be replaced; and costs the exact amount I paid for this mower. They are claiming that grass in the drive system has caused this problem. Again Toro's Customer Service does not really care to find out the truth, because people have commented on how clean my mower (and past mowers) have been. And if grass is getting into their driver system, which water can't get out, maybe it is a flaw in their design. Sorry Toro, I am looking elsewhere.

This product offers miraculous results.
5 Star Review   By Elvi on Home Depot - Jul 26, 2012

The Toro Recycler is a sure deliverer. It is easy to maneuver, starts promptly on the first pull, provides a neat cut, and takes the hassle out of pushing. I am a small-framed female, nearing senior citizen age, and have a huge yard. The Toro Recycler allows me the freedom of cutting my yard in a fraction of time.

Great mower
5 Star Review   By PamB on Home Depot - Jul 14, 2012

Delivered on time. Easy set up. Cranks on first pull! Well balanced so that on flat ground you don't feel the need to engage the self propelled function. Down side...difficult to keep bag and flap sealed which allows some clippings to blow up on operator while mowing.

Not sure if I can return it? I bought in Feb. I didn,t get to use much, my wife kepted getting the lawn mowed before I could use it. She used our old mower because she hates the new one. So third use, (I thought) it wouldn,t start. Didn,t even sputter. Maybe the Smart Choke on it went stupid!

5 Star Review   By catt59 on Home Depot - Jun 5, 2012

The mower is reliable and easy to use. I can start it every time by myself. We have a very uneven and steep lawn and the self propelled feature is great. When it is in use it actually helps me get up the hill. But when you want to stop or slow down all you do is let go of the lever and it stops pulling. It is awesome!

Value for the price, with some issues
3 Star Review   By Steve on Home Depot - Jun 4, 2012

It was easy to assemble and had everything except gas. It would have been nice for a paper funnel to be included for filling the oil. Started on the first pull. It is a bit heavy, but no more than expected. First strip to cut required me to lift the deck height so the motor wouldn't stall. The grass wasn't that high. This is a regular maintenance mower and not something to take on a tall grass stand of land. If you maintain your lawn at least once a week and more often during rainy times, this mower should work out. Once the height was acceptable to the motor, the drive wheels wanted to spin the entire time. I'm going to give it another cut or two before deciding if this is too big a problem. Another person called them "Little Tike" wheels and that is right on. I needed to dump the bag three times on my front lawn, which is a normal suburb lot. Old mower was never more than two. The prior mower was a 10 years old MTD Huskee and just quit starting. I thought going to a Toro was a step up. Problem is that at the under $300 mark, there isn't really a competitor for the 22" self propelled. I use a riding mower for the rear yard and use the 22" for 10 minutes of cutting under some trees and around shrubs in the rear yard. This mower is primarily for the front yard. I rated it a three just because I don't know of another one at the price point. If only I could get different tires or coat them with something for traction. Steve.

Front Wheel Drive is TERRIBLE
1 Star Review   By TomM on Home Depot - May 26, 2012

Starts easy and cuts good, BUT front wheels are very slippery and they spin making it very hard to control in a straight line. Takes more energy to keep straight than to push another model. Taking it back....

Single Speed is set for wrong speed
1 Star Review   By JefffromGPP on Home Depot - May 26, 2012

The speed set from the factory is too fast. Add in hard plastic wheels and front drive the wheels just spin. Once it is moving then the speed is too fast and the mower doesn't cut the grass very well or it starts to clog. Spend the extra money and get a rear drive with a rubber tire. We returned it.

Do Not buy front wheel drive mover from Toro
1 Star Review   By Erik on Home Depot - May 23, 2012

All I have had is problems with the belt coming off the self propel mechanism sinci I have purchased it. The manufacturer warranty lawn store fixed it the first few times for free but the belt still came off after a few uses. Suggest that you buy a rear wheel drive Honda OR a Toro that is back wheel drive. My Honda works like a dream and I jhave had no issues. Note you pay more for rear wheel drive but IT IS WELL WORTH IT.

1 Star Review   By omee on Home Depot - May 22, 2012

I am in the process of returning this lawnmover because the second day the self propelled feature did not work. It is causing me lot of touble because I can not lift the mower by my self (I am 71 years old) qnd put it in my car. I will never order anything as heavy as mower on line in the future. I am now thinking of exchanging with a push mower.

Cuts very well.
5 Star Review   By daddyO on Home Depot - May 21, 2012

I have only used this mower twice so far. My grass was at least 8" high before I mowed it (old mower died, and had to wait for delivery). The grass was so tall it was forming seed heads, and was slightly damp. Worst case scenario. I used the side discharge chute, which it appears some people seem to ignore, and the mower powered through easily. Even without "recycling", the clips were very small and discharged evenly. My next mow (3rd), I will try the mulch mode, but so far so good.

Good but could be better
3 Star Review   By Chuck on Home Depot - May 8, 2012

Having a small yard, we didn't need the latest and greatest lawn mower out there; however, we did want a decent lawn mower that didn't break the bank. Having a child and dogs that rack everything possible into the house, a bagging option was a requirement. At first, I was very pleased with the performance of the lawn mower until it locked up on me 2 days after the 90-day warranty had expired. The initial assessment was that there was no oil in the engine, but upon closer examination, it was discovered that there was an improper seal that allowed the oil to leak out. After a warranty replacement was installed, we continued our weekly lawn care. The lawn mower is simple to use and easy to mow with. My three big gripes are: the design of the rear bagger option; the rear deck blade/foot protective guard and the mulching capabilities. The first complaint is that the rear bag option works wonderful on perfectly dry grass; however, any moisture content at all results in a clog in the exhaust chute channel and bogs the mower down forcing you to change out the bag after only 2-3 passes on the lawn. In our area, there is always moisture on the grass this time of year, so waiting for it to dry is not an option. The second gripe regarding the rear foot/blade guard is that it comes off at random with no warning. Several times I have come close to running over it with the mower accidentally not knowing it had come loose. Lastly, the mulching blade really doesn't do a good job of mulching the grass clippings, and it leaves the clippings in clumps versus distributing them evenly in the yard. Not a bad mower overall, just not the best given the amount of money spent relative to other models.

Very Disapointed
1 Star Review   By RICH on Home Depot - May 5, 2012

Very disappointed with this mower. It chokes out if the grass is too long or damp. I have to clean it out underneath 2-3 times during a mowing. I can't use the full 22 inch deck because the mower will choke out. This is a very poor product from Toro.

Constanly bogs down and almost stalls!
2 Star Review   By Jenaisme001 on Home Depot - Apr 4, 2012

This is my 2nd Toro. The first lasted about 12 years and the last couple years it would bog down with grass and stall unless I made the front of it go up and spit out the grass underneath it. Well this new one does it right away from the get-go. In the manual it says not to cut the grass when wet because it can "plug" and stall. My grass was not wet but the clippings are because there is water in the grass blades. Not happy about this again so I will be returning and hope I can find one that can handle water in the grass blades because I live in Wisconsin. It does not get over 90 for weeks on end to dry everything out. There will always be water in the grass blades and these mowers should be able to handle it! Not a happy camper!

Good Value Mower
4 Star Review   By DaniK on Home Depot - Mar 31, 2012

I got this mower after using one that was not self-propelled on my fairly large yard. Using this mower has been significantly easier due to the self-propel feature. Starting it up is also a breeze. I found myself wishing it was a back-wheel drive at times.

Very disappointing-returning to store
1 Star Review   By Disappointed1 on Home Depot - Mar 10, 2012

My prior mower was a Toro like this that I purchased in 2003. It was a great mower and if the self-propelled system hadn't failed, I would have kept using it. Checked with 2 repair shops and it wasn't cost-effective to repair. May get it fixed anyway. First impression of this mower... Powered by Kohler, tires by Little Tykes. I mean c'mon Toro, I know manufacturers are using plastic tires these days, but these tires must have been leftovers from the Little Tykes factory. Talk about no gripping power! My yard is flat, but not perfectly flat, (little bumpy parts, but nothing the old Toro even fussed about). You would think these tires were trying to grip on ice. Additionally, I don't know what Toro did with the deck on this unit, but it left divots in several places in the yard and I had the wheels on the highest setting. I can't figure that part out at all. Grass wasn't high at all and if it were summertime it would be the equivalent of 3 days growth (guessing on that). So between fighting with the Little Tykes tires and leaving nice little divots in the yard, I was a little winded when I was done. Surprisingly, I was able to complete the whole yard and had gas left in the tank. My old Toro took a little over a tank of gas to mow the entire yard. So, I get near the end of the mowing process and I'm thinking, "please God let this thing run out of gas soon so I can take it back". Well needless to say, I had to let it run another 5 minutes or so before it ran out of gas. I will say this, it starts easily and the handle is comfortable. Oh, one more thing, I started with the bag attachment installed and quickly realized that Little Tykes wasn't going to be able to handled this with more than one pound of grass/leaves in the bag area, so I had to take the bag off and use the side discharge instead. So now, we get to rake the trimmings that should have been able to be handled in the bag. Gotta go rake now...yay me!

Taking it back
3 Star Review   By Gary on Home Depot - Mar 3, 2012

Just bought it and used it today. Had a '99 Lawnboy Silver-Pro for 13 years. I got the Toro cause it was 22" and the Lawnboys only 20", cant believe LB does not make a 22", and Toro owns them. The Toro started first pull every time no problem there. But this is the first front wheel drive I've had, and I hate it. The wheels spin, and to get more traction you have to pull up on the handle, that's counter-intuitive. Also does not pull straight, seems to wonder left & right. Hard to tell when the bag is full or getting full. And every time you take the bag off it dumps a couple of hand fulls of clippings on the ground. Because of the front drive wheels, it does not cut close when you dead end into a corner. I feel bad about it, but it's not what I want. I'll either get an LB or spend more, some higher end Toro's have rear wheel drive.
