Toro 20332
2 Star Review  productwiki.com - Nov 4, 2010

The 20332 is a mid-range model in Toros line of Recycler lawnmowers. Like all units in the series, it is powered by a Briggs & Stratton ReadyStart engine, but it lacks the low-emissions and electric-start features of some higher models. Its main improvement over the 20330 is the Personal Pace self-propel rear-wheel drive, which detects the users walking speed and adjusts its speed accordingly. Another addition is a Bag-On-Demand feature, which allows quick switching from mulching to bagging using a lever. Unlike other models in the series, the 20332 lacks a washout port, so the underside of the mower must be flushed manually. Two years of full warranty coverage are provided. Features Briggs & Stratton ReadyStart engine Self propel Adapts to walking speed Rear-wheel drive 22" cutting deck Bag On Demand Single-piece handle 6.75 ft-lb gross torque ... PROS: (1) starts 75% of the time on the first pull, always on the second (2) clears taller grass efficiently, with easy to set wheel heights (3) cleaning port does a good job for rinsing out almost all the grass that collects under the deck ... CONS: (1) leaves wheel tracks in some types of grass (2) drive belt makes some noise if cutting wet grass

Disappointing Durability
2 Star Review   By Disappointed on Home Depot - Jun 14, 2013

I had this mower for about 4 years. Changed oil, filter, plug each year. Had a tune up after two years. Had to bring it in for service during the second year and now after four years the mower is shot. Transmission, self-propel, belt and other issues equal a $300+ repair. Self-pace feature was nice but the faster you go the more clippings left behind. Start up was always easy. Cutting area was about 1/3 acre.

Manufacturing malfunction
3 Star Review   By vizzah on Home Depot - Jun 12, 2013

Ordered this from HomeDepot.com and had to return it to the store after realizing that the height adjuster had been welded shut. Tried cutting it once at a "buzz cut" level, but it shook so much that the oil cap flew right off (had been screwed on pretty tightly).

Buy a Honda
1 Star Review   By alanmd on Home Depot - Jun 11, 2013

Don't waste your money. I bought this in May of last year, returned it to HD twice, exchanging it the second time near the end of my mowing season. Used it twice this year and today it's smoking, smelling like something is burning. Returned to HD and they are sending it off for repairs. I bought a Honda and will donate this lemon to charity when it is returned. Save yourself from the headaches and don't buy Toro. Very undependable.

This is the 2nd Toro mower I have owned and from the service I got out of the first one I won't buy any other mower. This particular mower started up right out of the box and is particularly easy in handling. I can't think of anything I dislike about it! Great mower, especially for the price!

Great Value, Excellent Mower
5 Star Review   By DIYdan on Home Depot - Jun 10, 2013

I did a lot of shopping around before buying this mower and I have bagged my lawn 4 times now since buying it. I have been very happy with the ease of use the the power. I have a somewhat hilly yard and small ditch, and the rear-wheel drive does an excellent job throughout. The 190CC Briggs engine powers through the thickest and wettest part of my yard no problem. I really like the bag to mulch on demand feature. The personal pace self propel system works awesome as well. Overall I think this is an excellent value. I have not had any issues with it, and starts on the first pull every time whether cold or hot.

Easy to set up and use. Going from a puch type to a drive wheel mowing system has been a great advantage.
4 Star Review   By Dick on Home Depot - Jun 7, 2013

The recycling feature and side discharge have been a plus when it comes to longer grass which is the tendency in the Midwest where it rains often and we can't cut the grass as often as it needs.

Toro let us down
2 Star Review   Home Depot

Just bought my fourth Toro. I have a ZTR and replaced my recycler with another recycler. The first time I cut my grass I realized that Toro cheapened its product. The gears slip on turns. I doubt if it will last the year. I wish I had bought the Honda. Won't buy another Toro product.

Worst Mower.
1 Star Review   By Fun12388 on Home Depot - Jun 5, 2013

Knowing that Toro would have produced a quality product, I am extremely disappointed with this lawn mower. A waste of money, I had it in the shop three times in first year. The guarantee to start is meaningless. I’ll never buy another Toro machine!!!!

4 Star Review   By rappman on Home Depot - Jun 5, 2013

This is my first self propelled mower in years. After doing some research and reading many reviews I decided to buy the Toro. I have been very pleased with my decision. This mower has plenty of power and I really like the self pacing feature. It has made my job much easier and quicker. The packaging and the assembly were great and easy. i would definitely reccomend this mower to others.

Basically, I'm satisfied as it does what it was advertised to do.
4 Star Review   By Sailor7 on Home Depot - May 28, 2013

The mower starts on the first pull as advertised and the personal pace feature is convenient but needed a little time to get use to, especially when having to turn around. The cut and mulch is working out well. I have cut the grass approximately a half-dozen times and have changed the oil as directed. I have no complaints and possibly would have rated it higher except that I'm still getting used to the machine.

Solid lawn mower
4 Star Review   By Daniel on Home Depot - May 28, 2013

Can't really complain about this lawnmower. It's pretty solid with decent features. The bag fills up quick, but that depends a lot on how tall your grass is. If the grass is wet, expect the hole to get clogged at some point (if you're bagging).

Easy start, easy to use
4 Star Review   By Nellie on Home Depot - May 26, 2013

Bought it 1 year ago. Still easy to start this spring -only 2 pulls after storage over winter, since I'm an old, disable female and had to get rid of my last mower because I couldn't pull the cord hard and fast enough to start it, this one starts easier so far. Preferred push mowers due to wheels turn easier than previous self-propelled models so this was first self propelled in 15 years; it is easy to push when trying to mow an odd space. No problem using this self-propelled system, involved no learning curve just walk it automatically adjusts to whatever speed I'm going. The only 2 things that bother me are: 1: the belt around the blade shaft makes a loud rattling noise like something was falling off -think this belt has something to do with the self-propelled system. The first year kept thinking the blade sounded loose and kept checking it was and not sure this is a good design, ask me when I have to put on a new belt 2: no oil drain plug on the bottom of the deck, oil has to be drained by turning it on its side. Not sure if all the oil is drained and prefer using the oil plug so the old sediment is on the bottom by spring and drains out first and completely. A 3rd problem is the front wheels are on the deck forward of the blade area which mean the front of the deck and wheels must move forward approx. 6 inches before the blade can reach the grass. This makes trimming close to some areas difficult (would have to push the deck/wheels over bushes/flowers to cut grass close by). Wish the front wheels were on the deck an inch or 2 behind the blade edge but believe that all the mowers on display offered this same design so can't take off points for this problem. Overall, it is a good lawnmower for the price. It comes with a grass catcher bag but I never use them, might use one to bag leaves in the fall. A few years ago the mowers didn't come with the bags and they needed to be purchased separately.

Awesome lawn mower
5 Star Review   By Cyclewatts on Home Depot - May 21, 2013

This mower blazed through my 1/2 acre way overgrown lawn with ease. I even stalled out the mower on a big hidden rock and it did not damage the mower. The mower was missing one of the lever covers for the height adjuster but HD promptly mailed me one.

Excellent Product for excellent price
5 Star Review   By Tariq on Home Depot - May 21, 2013

I have used battery operated mower for the past two years. Needless to say, there is a night and day difference between battery and gas powered mowers. Battery operated ones just don't have enough power. I found this model from Consumers Report and am very happy thus far. Granted, I only had used it four times so far, but I am very happy with the power of the mower. Especially the smooth off-shoot of the grass clips, it really does a good job throwing the clips without clogging the mower (unlike my battery operated mower, which I had to tun upside down to clean manually every few mins). Also, the gas consumption is quite efficient I thought. One fill would run my front yard and one would run my back yard. I have just over 1/3 acre. The only thing I wish was working better is the water wash being a bit stronger to clean out most of the debris. I do have to manually remove the "stuck" debris with hand. Will see if I run into any issues. Overall, very happy with the product.

Good Mower- Arrived Damaged
4 Star Review   By Sarge2070 on Home Depot - May 21, 2013

I purchased the Toro Mower on May 12, 2013. The mower handles very well and does a nice job in both bagging and multching modes. The Personal Pace system also works very well on steep hills in my back yard. The lower rating is because the unit was delivered properly boxed from the factory but had damage to 3 of the 4 wheel adjustment levers. One was bent nearly at a right angle another was twisted in a spiral shape. There was no damage to the packaging so it is unclear how this could have occured. I was able to bend the levers back into place but on a brand new mower this is unacceptable.

Not for over 50's
2 Star Review   By gawcpa on Home Depot - May 21, 2013

Nice light mower with nice features and a good cut. But self-paced means it moves when you move. Traditional self-propelled mowers "pull" you at one speed. This mower requires you to "push" first and then it self-propels. Great for the younger set that wants a mower faster than traditional. But for older folks, it was nice for the mower to "pull" me along. Especially on hills; with this mower if I struggle on a hill, it stops until I start walking again. If I would have known this, I would have bought another model.

Great so far!
5 Star Review   By Tinker50 on Home Depot - May 21, 2013

Was easy to set up and get to mowing right away. The variable pace is so far a great feature for both my wife and I. I have had one glitch, in that I turned it off to move something and it would not start again. A short time later it fired right up, I think it was just vapor locked for some reason because I have started and stopped it ten times since then with no problems. I will keep my eye on it and it has a warrantee, so it should be no problem. I a way i think I prefer a manual choke and throttle lever(s), but we will see. So far so good.

The personal pace feature is worth the extra
5 Star Review   By Clinton on Home Depot - May 20, 2013

The personal pace feature works incredibly well. It comes with the 7.25 190cc engine and starts up with the first pull. Maneuvering is easy, and the bagging area is really easy to remove. That's a big plus for me since it takes me 5 bags removals to mow the lawn in my house.

After 5 years, still love it
5 Star Review   By Someguy on Home Depot - May 14, 2013

Bought a personal pace Toro over 5 years ago. Had 1/2 acre lot back then, moved to a new house with 1/3 acre. I've done maintenance bt only bare minimum ( change oil, empty gas at year end, sharpen blades). It was advertised as one-pull start, and it always has and still does. It gums up a little when I'm mulching high wet grass, but I think that's normal. I'd like a bigger bag, but that would probably make it harder for smaller people (I am 6'3") to maneuver. Anyway, when this one conks out ill buy another Toro.

Excellent mower!
5 Star Review   By Tarzan on Home Depot - May 14, 2013

I have had this mower for a little over a month and have used it 6 or 7 times totaling about 5 hours. It has started everytime on the first pull and works perfectly. I especially like the way that you can go from mulching to bagging just by flipping the lever. The personal pace feature takes a little getting used to, but once you become familiar with it, it is a piece of cake.

Picked up the new mower this weekend, set it up per directions, and it started on the first pull. Personal pace drive was a dream compared to the Craftsman front wheel drive I got rid of. We'll see about long term reliability, but so far it's two big thumbs up.

My old Toro Electric Start Recycler Model 20031
4 Star Review   By YardDude1 on Home Depot - May 12, 2013

Bought this in 2004. Used in Jacksonville, FL where the temperature does not get to cold, and the mowing season is longer. Mowers here don't sit idle for several months probably contribute to a mower living longer...I got 9 years from mine. The engine still works but the transmission is grinding, if not for that I would still be using my 2004 mower. Replaced my old mower with the Toro Model 20032...Will see how things hold up on the new mower.

Easy to use with great features but lacks endurance job quality
4 Star Review   By Mike on Home Depot - May 11, 2013

I love all of the features of this mower. The ease of switching to mulching to bagging was a breeze. Easy hose attachment for under carriage is a plus. This mower is a piece of cake to maneuver with it's self propel system. All of these pros are great but there is a huge problem. After an hour plus of continuous work the mower will not start after shut off. You will need to wait till the mower is completely cold before you can start the mower again. This was a big disappointment.

Bought this mower about a 2 yrs. ago. Was only impressed the first time I used it, its been junk ever since.Self propelled went out in the first week fixed it myself then finally get a recall on it. It says its guaranteed to start, well dont count on it. Battery cover is not sealed so battery compartment fills up with grass and corrodes battery ends plus the fuse. Already replaced battery because ends were corroded and broke off, fuse holder same thing. It hardly ever starts kinda feel like a idiot out in the yard cranking my walk behind mower. In one word its JUNK!!!!!!! Im selling it at my yard sale next month, anyone want to buy it.

Would NOT recommend purchase.
1 Star Review   By Michael on Home Depot - May 6, 2013

I bought this mower on 4.4.12 and had a flawless 1st season. Mower deck, deck to handle transition piece and personal pace feature has solid construction,(mostly metal, no plastic in high stress areas) so far. I gave a low rating because of the lack of an enforceable warranty. After laying up the mower for the winter per instructions in manual, the mower failed to start after many, many pulls. I had a dry plug, no fuel to cylinder. It is a Briggs & Stratton. I called two authorized repair facilities in the area to have it repaired. Neither facility would commit to the “guaranteed to start” part of the warranty, citing fuel delivery issues are not covered. I expected the warranty to cover this, especially since I followed manual instructions to the letter. I contacted a 3rd facility and got a few pointers on what to check for. To get to the float bowl, the air filter assy. must be removed. It is secured by two 5mm screws that thread into carb body. These were loc-tited and over-tightened at factory. I had to drill them out and Heli-coil new threads($40). When I did this, it voided warranty on that part. I knew this going in, but it still wears me slick to have to do any of this at all. It still didn’t start. I pulled the plug again after working on the carb and found the plug to be wet. The plug did spark weakly outside of the engine. The Champion plug had an oddball number that could not be cross-referenced by anyone. It was the original plug, with less than 25 hrs. of run time. Don’s Hardware was able to cross with model # on motor. The new plug got the mower running again. If you still desire the Toro product, pay the extra money and get the Honda motor. (Pun alert) Briggs & Stratton don’t cut it for me any more. B&G are riding the coattails of their past reliability but the quality just isn’t there any more. Like so many other products, only average engineering, poor quality control. I don't care for the design of the oil drain plug, either. the drain plug requires a 1/2" square drive. There is a bracket that partially obscures access to the plug. In my opinion, that's a poor design that should have been caught while still in the design phase. So far, I don't have drive issues that other commenters are having. Thumbs down on this one.

As Advertised
5 Star Review   By AD1021 on Home Depot - May 5, 2013

I bought this mower in 2010. I used it the entire season. I also used it the entire 2011 season. 2012 we had our first baby so I hired a lawn service to do our lawn. This year (2013) I am back doing my lawn. I left the old gas from 2011 in the mower with a half of tank. I filled it up and it fired on the third pull! I have had zero issues with the personal pace system. I have a huge hill on my 1 acre property. I have cut grass 4 times this year with zero problems. Great mower great price.

Worst mower I've ever used
1 Star Review   By doctor1 on Home Depot - May 3, 2013

I bought this mower about 8 months ago to replace an 18 yr old Toro that had a 6.0 Hp motor. That mower worked great and cut my lawn very reliably, but it has developed occasional starting problems so I purchased the new Toro. What I found was that on very dry, not too tall grass, it worked great. But if there is the slightest hint of any moisture in the grass, the mower clogs up and stalls repeatedly. The one pull start feature is great, and you'll need it because you'll be starting and starting and starting. Yesterday I gave up. This thing is less than useless. I struggled through a cutting 5 days ago and it rained 4 days ago. I waited until the grass seemed pretty dry (4 days since it rained with bright sunny days!) I tried yesterday to cut the grass, which normally takes 1 hour. Almost two hours later I hadn't even gotten trough the front yard. I gave up and got out the old 6 Hp Toro and finished the yard with it. If I could I would return this worthless mower. If you are foolish enough to buy one be sure and take advantage of the 30 day return policy.

FINICKY FUEL FILTER !
3 Star Review   By makv23 on Home Depot - May 2, 2013

I bought this mower at the end of the summer brand new and mowed my grass two times before the season was over. The next spring I pulled it out and it wouldn't start. After i finally found the closest mechanic that does Toro warranty work the problem was not covered. I paid a $65 repair fee to use it for the 3rd time. 3rd summer same story. Works good when its running

4 Star Review   By SonOfElvis on Home Depot - Apr 30, 2013

I have a small yard, but the grass is thick. Mows well on hills and level area. Starts on first pull. Have used recycle only. No bagging so far. Only problem has been with bent adjusting lever on one of the wheels. VERY hard to change heights of mow.

Piece of junk
1 Star Review   By nomoretoros on Home Depot - Apr 30, 2013

Got three or four uses out of it before needing repair for failing to start. After repair, got 2 uses out of it before it failed to start again. Bought another brand and sold this for scrap. Unless you want to be constantly repairing it, buy another brand. P.S. Even when it ran, it was not as nice or smooth to operate as my old LawnBoy.

Now I love to mow!
4 Star Review   By Burden on Home Depot - Apr 30, 2013

Love the Personal Pace system on this mower....really makes it easy on my bum shoulder, as the mower moves efficiently with very little muscle. Also, the rear wheel drive makes it a cinch going up hills and over uneven surfaces. The only thing that I didn't like about this mower were the tabs used to raise and lower the cut. These are made of hard plastic, but one of them cracked and now makes it difficult to use it without a plier. Otherwise, loving this mower so far.

Happy so far
5 Star Review   By Quinn on Home Depot - Apr 30, 2013

Easy to assemble. Love how fast it can propel itself, makes the job twice as fast as it was with my non-propelled mower. And I'm not left exhausted afterwards either. hose attachement on top of deck for rinsing is a very nice feature that I hadn't realized it even came with.

2 Star Review   By Magpie on Home Depot - Apr 27, 2013

Glad to see i'm not alone! Worked great for the first two years then slowly the rear gears started grinding. Pulled of rear wheels for cleaning and lubrication to no avail. Repairman told me it wouldn't be worth fixing. I've used Toro products for years, extremely disappointed in this mowers design and performance.

broken already
2 Star Review   By dogmanosu on Home Depot - Apr 23, 2013

Iv'e had it 2 yrs and 10 months. the Recoiler is broken, so I cannot start it. 129 to repair. No thank you... As far as it's use. It's ok, not too powerful though. The deck design is the real issue. It can cut any length grss, but the deck clogs up after about 120feet if cutting anything tall. Engine power seems meaningless with a deck that clogs so easily.

Great Toro
5 Star Review   By Safety56 on Home Depot - Apr 21, 2013

I am sorry about some of the poor ratings I have seen here. And although I had issues with the last Toro I purchased, for myself, I think it lasted me about five years. It was used to mow almost 3 acres and I really think it just got worn out. That brings me up to my newest Toro, and it has preformed flawless. It starts on the lightest pull on the rope cord on the first pull every single time. My yard looks like a golf course, and I could not be happier. If I should have problems down the road which I pray I don't then I will make another feedback letter. But that will not be likely because I trust Toro completely. Kindest Regards Safety56

Everything worked as advertised.
5 Star Review   By BobC on Home Depot - Apr 18, 2013

I picked the mower up about 10 AM, went home, assembled it and finished mowing my lawn by 12:30! I normally mulch but my grass was extra; taller and some leaves were left from the winter so I bagged it. The mower did an exceptional job, leaving the lawn well swept. I am not a young man (69) and the personal pace was great! Backing up took some getting use to - but when the wheels locked up, I followed the directions and it worked fine. By the time I finished it was no longer a problem.. A great choice.

Toro Personal Push
1 Star Review   By PushingCharlie on Home Depot - Apr 18, 2013

I bought this mower in 2009 worked great for a year and a half then had problem with the rear wheels locking up. flipped it over on bench and began to break it down. seems the rear wheels (among other things) have to be greased yearly after 2 hours got it back together worked fine for another six months. took to a shop this time was told the Transmission is toast, pulley, couple other parts don't remember what he called them. but total repair would be over or close to $200.00 . motor still runs so it's back to a push mower for now. next time I will do my homework or purchase a commercial grade type and plan on taking in for reg service every year

Better off buying a goat...
1 Star Review   By Kevin on Home Depot - Apr 15, 2013

This is perhaps the biggest piece of garbage I have ever come across. The self-propel feature lasted exactly one season, and even when it worked, it was more trouble than help. This season I pull the thing out and the side discharge deflector falls off within minutes of first use. I am totally perplexed at the total disregard for quality craftsmanship with this Toro product. They have definitely lost me as a customer for life.

Not much bang for the buck
2 Star Review   By Andy on Home Depot - Apr 13, 2013

Mine was in the shop the first year. The guarantee to start is meaningless. The service people claim if your gas is over 30 days old, it's not a warranty issue. Go get it cleaned on your own dime. So every year for 3 years I had to get it cleaned. Gave it away and bought a Husqvarna which is very reliable. Something happened to Toro over the past decade or two, and it wasn't good. It's the kind of product you might rent each week, but not own. It's not reliable enough.

Overall Good Mower
4 Star Review   By YardNewbee on Home Depot - Apr 10, 2013

I'm not sure if it was the length of our grass or that we live in the rain forrest (that being the Pacific NW)--but we do have problems with the mower not liking wet. It almost gets overheated. That being said, I do love the mower. Which is why I rated it as "good." It cuts great!

Great Mower!
5 Star Review   By Jason on Home Depot - Apr 9, 2013

I've read some of the mixed reviews on this mower, so I wanted to write a review about my model 20332. The mower has made it through one complete season in 2012 and I just used it for the first time in 2013. It fired right up on the second pull and worked great. I did notice the personal pace seemed a little slow, so I adjusted the tension on the cable and all is well. I think the key to any newer mower it to run it dry before storing and to use fresh gas in the spring. Gone are the days of using the primer bulb to flush out the old gas in the carb, so you really do need to run it dry and prevent old gas from gumming the carb. I'm very happy with my mower, I think the personal pace rear wheel drive works great, and I always get a nice clean cut on my lawn. I would recommend it to my friends and I would definitely buy one again.

Worst Mower in history
1 Star Review   By jry1959 on Home Depot - Apr 8, 2013

I've never had to work so hard mowing my lawn. A simple push mower is easier to use. While this mower's "personal pace" drive is underpowered to help you in straight cuts, it fights you with a vengence when you want to turn or back up, even with the handle pulled all the way back. I can push the handle forward with the mower on a flat even surface and it barely moves. Yet, I have to pick up the back wheels when I want to pull it backward. ridiculous. Worst drive design I've seen in any mower.

the self propelled is weak
3 Star Review   By James on Home Depot - Apr 7, 2013

We purchased this lawnmower and found that it could not pull its own weight up a small hill so we returned it. I have never seen this in all the mowers we have ever owned. We had a Toro a couple of lawnmowers ago and it worked great until the self propelled broke so we thought we would try it again after hearing improvements were made to that area ...so don't buy if you want the self propelled to help you mow the lawn. The rest of the lawnmover worked great, easy to remove bag, easy start..

My life with self-propelled
4 Star Review   By Chief on Home Depot - Apr 6, 2013

As I read in other reviews I too had trouble with the self pace system. Had the mower for 4 years used on a 1/2 achier yard. Do all COA (clean, oil, & adjust) myself using my standards (Retired Military). After year 2 drive was weak, did the cable adjust. Year 3 changed drive gear assembly on left side ($80 parts from TORO online). End of year 4 No push at all from self-propelled system. Broke down and went to authorized service center. Estimate to repair $430 ( can you say same as New Mower?) my answer? Take mower home remove gears and make into regular push mower. After all engine and cut are still good and has life. Extra exercise I guess is a plus. Long story short not another TORO in my life.

Great machine
5 Star Review   By BILLC on Home Depot - Apr 2, 2013

After trying a couple of Honda mowers, of which I had a number of problems, I tried the Torro. I could not be more satisfied. I had my first one about 5 or 6 years and it still starts and does a good job. I just purchased a new one which I will begin using soon. I will be giving my old one to a neighbor. And, I cannot say enough about Home Depot. They have stood behind their products 100%. In some cases, as with the Honda mowers, even after the warranty had expired. I could not ask more from a business than they have done for me!

I'm going for round 2. First one is about 10 years old.
5 Star Review   By Dodah on Home Depot - Mar 31, 2013

I bought this mower a decade ago - the electric start version. I abuse the heck out of the thing. I have a bit less than 1/2 acre and I mow meticulously and probably more than any of my neighbors - I love a great looking lawn. It's kept in a garage, but I pretty much ignore motor maintenance- just sharpen the blade and go. After starting on the first pull even after sitting all winter with old gas every year for 5 years or so. The electric start went kaput after about 3 years but since it was so easy to start, I just removed the battery and cable and went with the pull-start option. I finally took it in for service; after that, it took me 2 or 3 pulls to get her going; go figure. Last year, I had to replace the drive cable that snapped, but it only lasted about 3 months. Now I'm still cutting with basically a push mower (no self-propelled). The point here is that things wear out, but after this many years, I think I've gotten more than my money's worth AND I'm going to buy another one. I may even replace the cable on my old one and sell it for a $100, but I can't really justify going with any other mower. (the ONLY features I wish it had were the hose connector for easy wash-out and the single height adjustment, the new one has one of these, I don't think it has a single height adjustment yet - definitely not a deal killer)

Popular Mechanics got it wrong
1 Star Review   By member elmira49 - Mar 27, 2013

Strengths: May be worth money at scrap yard

Weakness: 3-yr FULL warranty is bascially non-existant but may give you a warm & fuzzy feeling during your purchase.

Popular Mecahnics wrote a great review of this product....but they got it wrong. Our mower needs major work after being maintained per the manual. We could buy a new mower for what it's going to cost to repair it We will have to shortly but it won't be a Toro after this disapointing experience.

Dishonest company, broken mower
1 Star Review   By MJGrant on Home Depot - Feb 25, 2013

The mower didn't even last two seasons before Personal Pace and Electric Start broke. Toro even did a recall for a problem with "Personal Pace" system, which coincidentally broke on my mower, but the shop decided the repair wasn't related to the recall and I was on the hook for $80 in repairs. Toro asked me my opinion, which I provided, and then refused to post it on their website, so I hope they enjoy seeing it here. Do not buy Toro lawnmowers.

Died after less than a year
1 Star Review   By Jeff on Home Depot - Feb 19, 2013

It was easy to use while it lasted. Sadly it died with only 8 months use. I maintained it fine. It just won't run after 2 month winter. Started and then died. Never to start again. My last bargain mower ran for ten years with no problems. I am NOT a Kohler engine fan - piece of junk. Don't buy this machine if you want it to run for years.

Awesome Product
5 Star Review   By Mike79 on Home Depot - Jan 9, 2013

I just bought this mower and it is a beast. Performance is amazing and the Briggs motor has more power than anyone would need. The personal paste rear drive works so amazing even my five year old can use it. The water hook up for cleaning the deck is probably the best idea ever. no more having to hold the lawn mower up and washing it out.

Good value for the money
5 Star Review   By Jon1020 on Home Depot - Jan 8, 2013

First time owning a house with land, so first time I had to mow the lawn we just put in. I did a lot of research online and this mower always seemed to get great reviews for the money, so decided to buy. I am pleased. The mower starts up easily, has a very easy mechanism for using or removing a bag for mulch, and I love the port for the hose on the top to wash out the mulch. The hose doesn't easily wash out everything - you still need to clean out some bits manually, but it still makes it easy. The instructions are clear and easy to follow, and within 15 minutes of opening the box I was up and running without issue. Of course, the cut is very clean - adjusting the height is pretty easy using the levers on each of the wheels.

Best of Class Lawnmower
5 Star Review   By ProgMetal on Home Depot - Dec 18, 2012

After having "gifted" my first Toro 22 inch Personal Pace mower to my son on the eve of his first home purchase I immediately bought a new one. This newer model works just as well if not better than my original machine. Starts on the first pull every time, ease of use, easy to clean, and its perfect for all aspects of lawn care. Adjusted a bit higher in the fall and its the perfect self-propelled rake - cutting leaves into mulch instantaneously. By far the best of its kind - no other mower even comes close.

Warranty no good
1 Star Review   By Jimmy on Home Depot - Dec 2, 2012

One of the features of this product is the warranty "Guaranteed to Start" offered by Toro. My mower is one year into the two year "Guaranteed to Start" warranty from Toro. It didn't start so I went to the nearest Toro dealer according to their website. It had been out of business for some time. So I drove to another city to the next closest. Nope, this Toro dealer does not do warranty work. I was told that I needed to take it to a Birggs and Straton dealer since they make the engine. I showed her where in the manual it told me that Toro dealers do the work but she was emphatic. I called Toro and they confirmed that I needed to take it to a B&S dealer. She gave me their number. 25 minutes on hold in the parking lot and I was given the location of the nearest B&S dealer. So I drove to a third city and was again told "No". They said it's a Toro guarantee and they do the work. So after three hours and three different cities I was half a tank of gas down and still had a "Guaranteed to Start" mower that wouldn't start in my van. I called Toro and asked for my money back since their dealers don't warranty their warranty. No. I then asked it I could take it to a local repair shop close to my house and have them pay the bill. No. All he did was refer me to another Toro dealer which was an hour drive from my house. The gas cost would exceed the cost of the repair. So I ended up paying to repair my "Guaranteed to Start" mower. Home Depot is a great place to buy a mower, just don't buy a Toro.

I like it a lot
5 Star Review   By Happy on Home Depot - Nov 21, 2012

I got this for three hundred seventy four dollars on 05/27/12 after relocating. My father assembled it while I went back to Home Depot for more supplies. It started on the first pull and hasn't required more than two pulls until recently after sitting for a few weeks and me with an injured back. The yard we bought is full of weeds so I cut low and this monster handles it with ease. I'm glad I opted for the blade stop model to allow me to remove debris I missed on my walkthrough before mowing. I mulch; I have used the side chute a couple times for leaves and it met my expectations. I have not used the bag. Yes, the wheels are adjusted for height individually; big deal. The personal pace function (lean into it and it will move faster) is a plus for my bumpy yard. I use 93 octane gasoline because, for the extra quarter a gallon, how much am I really going to go through during a season? I really liked the light weight Craftsman high wheel I bought in 2001, but I like this better considering my current needs. Bottom line: if you are considering this product, and can find a price with which you are comfortable, then get it. I don't think you will be disappointed.

Poor quality
2 Star Review   By Rusty on Home Depot - Nov 19, 2012

I had this Toro mower for 2 1/2 months. Went to use it one day and it wouldn't start. Had to take it to an authorized TORO dealer. It needed a new spark plug and they put some stablizer in the gas with a charge of $62.80. A mower at this age should not need a new sparkplug. I don't know when the guaranteed to start warranty applies. I recommend a HONDA!!

Overated
1 Star Review   By Boyd on Home Depot - Nov 7, 2012

Bought mower in April. In August started to have problems with the mower running rough. Now it is difficult to start and then runs for only a few seconds. I replaced the air filter, spark plug, oil, and gasoline, as well as, cleaned the carberator (which was NOT dirty). This seemed to make the problem worse. Mower will not run for more than 3 seconds. To makes things worse, Toro has so far refused to return any messages or requests for assistance. Do NOT buy this product. Home Depot has always provided me a good experience. This is an issue with Toro. I bought the mover on Toro's reputation. Lesson learned.

Nice job Toro.
4 Star Review   By Jeff on Home Depot - Nov 6, 2012

I have only used ti once so my opinion might change with continued use but for now, this is a nice machine. This mower replaces a 7-8 yr old Toro highwheel front drive mower that served me well, but the transmission failed recently. This new mower seems MUCH better than the old unit with much less effort required to move it up slopes and even across flat ground. I can actually use just one hand to push the handle that activates the personal pace feature. Hopefully this mower will last at least as long as my previous Toro and hopefully longer.

I would not recommend a toro to anyone
1 Star Review   By DoNOTbuythisproduct on Home Depot - Nov 3, 2012

Purchased a returned lawn mower in 6/12. Was told it had been returned because previous owner probably wanted to mow lawn one last time then returned it. Used one time in June, lack of rain = no grass, did not use again until the beginning of September. Used once every other Saturday to give the grass a chance to look nice again. Today is November 3 used approximately 6 times. After trying to start 15 times it started, only to die. Repeated process and died again, and again and again. I am not well off nor have the time to transport or money to pay to get fixed. I so deeply regret not purchasing another craftsmen. I could kick myself for being so stupid.

Going with past experience with Toro.
4 Star Review   By Torofan on Home Depot - Nov 2, 2012

I had a similar Toro mower for 12 years before having trouble with the Personal Pace system. Loved the mower. The new one has more features for about the same price I paid in 2000. Judging from past experience I expect this mower to do the job. Love the clean out port feature and quick change from bagged to mulched settings.

Started on first cord pull as featured -- just added gas. Good construction. Easy set-up out of the box.

Great mower

Love the way it is so easy to walk with. Starts first pull everytime. The only thing I worry about is how long the cable for the self walking will last. Overall I love it

Excellent mower - love personal pace
5 Star Review   By BruceM on Home Depot - Oct 30, 2012

I had purchased an earlier model of this same mower about 8 years ago and it was excellent, but started burning oil this year, so I replaced it with the same thing since replacing the motor on the old one would have cost nearly as much as a new one. This is slightly better than the earlier model - no longer need to prime the fuel, and it has a hose hookup for washing under the deck. Excellent machine. While I was disappointed that the old one died, $45 per year isn't bad. Bought it at Depot so I could pay for it over 6 months and it was ready to pick up when I got there.

Don't waste your Time & Money with this mower
1 Star Review   By BenG on Home Depot - Oct 27, 2012

The mower worked great most of the 1st season...By the end of the season the plastic on metal drive gears had started to fail and had to be replaced. Mower went back to the shop (2) more times for the same reason before the end of the 3rd season. Got third 3rd repair warrantied out after I called Toro HQ's twice to complaIn. Toro emailed the dealer to give the OK but it was another repair none the less. Mid way through this season the drive belt gave out and and that was a $74 repair. I could have lived with that but now the engine is having a very difficult time starting. Dealer said it's a carburetor problem and will cost another $80 making this season total $154 if I have the work done. If I had not gotten warranty on the third gear repair I would be close to paying for the mower twice by now. My now 18 yr old John Deere mower that I donated to an outdoor club at time bought the Toro is still running fine. Bottom lline is that mower won't last and will pile up the repairs...Avoid this product and look elsewhere.

Started right out of the box
5 Star Review   By yardqueen on Home Depot - Oct 23, 2012

Performed beautifully, starting with 1 pull first time. Just added gas and oil and I was cutting easily. We have used it 3 times since and it's been great. Hopefully it will winter well and start just as easily come spring.

easy assembly. quick start. smooth cutting
5 Star Review   By NJSH on Home Depot - Oct 18, 2012

just replaced Toro from 7 years ago. some good improvments with the assembly of the handle so the bolts don't fall out any more. easier to raise and lower the wheels. no need to prime to start. one pull does it. very pleased.

only used mower about 4 times since purchase and so far I am very satisfied. Easy and quick start up. I hope this lasts as long as my last toro (22 years).

Won't restart if you stop. Takes two days to mow 0.2 acres.
1 Star Review   By williambq on Home Depot - Oct 16, 2012

I had the previous version of this Toro and it lasted 12 years and I loved it. So I bought this similar updated model expecting similar results. Day 1 I had issues. If you stop the mower for more than 20 seconds (like to empty the bag), it is hard to restart. I found if I put it in the shade and waited 40 to 60 minutes, it would usually restart. But sometimes I had to just wait until the next day for it to reset. Often, I did not have alloted time to wait and had to mow over two days period anyway. I hoped it would get better, but I feel it actually got worse. There are no settings to adjust; no choke, no way to pump gas into the carb like on previous models, no way to adjust the throttle to get it restarted except wait........ So frustrating. Not how I wanted to spend my weekends this summer, hoping my mower would run long enough to finish mowing. After doing some research and talking with Home Depot, I have found this is not the case of being a lemon but is just poor design and a large percentage of these new models are failing in this manner. So mad at this poor excuse and poor imitation of the Toro I had 12 years ago. I called Home Depot and they said this model has been pretty bad. Unfortunately, most of the other brands followed suit in this design and could recommend none of the brands they carried as any better including Honda... Mad as fracking heck.
