Doesn't stay running
4 Star Review   By BigJ on Home Depot - Jun 11, 2013

The item is proced right, works good, I've had instances where it doesn't stay running at times even after 5 minutes of use - seems that it takes too long to warm up perhaps... Just purchased an attachment for it but haven't had the chance to use that yet - only owned for less than a month so time will tell if this product is worth more or less stars than 4...

5 Star Review   By turkey1 on Home Depot - Jun 2, 2013

I bought this trimmer yesterday and put it straight to work on my 8 acres of which about two have to be trimmed. I haven't had a trimmer for a year so the weeds were thick and high. I followed the directions and it cranked right up and and tore through those weeds like butter.great machine and price!

Lasted 8 years and still works
5 Star Review   By Grasstrimmer on Home Depot - May 26, 2013

Had the trimmer for 8 years now. Use is once every 2 weeks for 30-45 minutes. For the first 6 years I also used the edger attachment with it (corner house, so lots of edging for the sidewalk). Easy to start. After 8 years, I had to replace the gas cap. You need to be carefull when putting the gas cap on. If you don't pay attention, you may put it on crooked and it then leaks gas. Never had to perform any form of maintenance on it. The place where the distal attachment connects has developed some play, but it still works. I did replace the string trimmer to one which was easier to change the string on, spools are too much of a pain. Wish this thing would break so I could buy a new one.

Excellent Trimmer so far
5 Star Review   By Ray0512 on Home Depot - May 24, 2012

I purchased this trimmer as a refurbished unit. It started just fine after 3 or 4 pulls following the starting instructions. It appeared to come with no air filter. I contacted Ryobi & they stated this trimmer just uses the screen. No conventional foam filter is used. My first use was cutting about 1/3 acre of tall grass & weeds that grow on the forest floor of our property. I used it about 3 1/2 hours straight & had no problems at all. I went through several tanks of gas. It did the job well & had plenty of power. The manual recommends a 10W 30 motor oil, the label on the unit recommends 20W 50 oil. I used a 10W 40. It seems OK. Always store this 4 cycle unit in a horizontal position since it has an oil pan. My unit came with a bump & feed head. I am ordering a Pro-Cut II head for it since I like the ease of replacing line. This is my first use so I will comment more in the future if I have something unusual to report. At this point I would recommend this trimmer. Hopefully it will last many years like my last 2 cycle Ryobi did.

Good if you're patient
3 Star Review   By LSUinTexas on Home Depot - Aug 13, 2009

Once you get it running, it cuts as designed. When using the string trimmer to edge, it actually performs pretty well. It's a little awkward to edge even when you rotate the shaft, because depending on which way you twist it, you're shooting debris back in your face. Two negatives: First, it can be a pain to start. Once you figure out the directions aren't quite right, you can get it started in a couple pulls. You need to have the patience to "feel" the engine out and not just read the directions, though. Second, after 15 or 20 minutes of constant cutting, the motor dies. This is while using it upright and not tilted in one direction or another for edging. But, for 99 bucks, and a quick trim around the edge of your house and the light pole out front, it's good enough. I give it three stars because I burned through two Homelites and the bump advance didn't work worth a darn. This bump advance does work every time I've used it, though.

Solid trimmer for a great price
4 Star Review   By NWHouston on Home Depot - Aug 11, 2009

I bought this trimmer off two recommendations, the realization that a battery powered nor electric trimmer would cut it (I tried them), and it's price. I looked at 4-cycle models but it seems the technology is still immature based on reviews here and elsewhere. Mixing the oil isn't hard if you buy a 1 gallon gas container and the 2.6oz bottles of oil - very easy to do. For those who have issues starting this unit: make sure you prime according to the instructions, and give the trimmer a little throttle while you start it. When I do this, it ALWAYS starts for me in less than 4 pulls, usually on the 2nd pull. Pros: Very powerful; love the fixed line head; works great as an edger when you rotate the handle upside down and invert the trimmer; not really all that loud; very little exhaust; like the attachment option but haven't needed it yet. Cons: Starting it is odd, but easy once you get the hang of it; due to the attachment feature, the actual trimmer attachment has a little side-to-side play where it attaches to the power head even when the locking clamp is completely tightened down - I would like it to be completely secure; would be nice to have an edge guide. Overall this is a solid trimmer at a great price. I've had it two weeks. I'll post another review if anything changes.

Spare flywheel anyone?
1 Star Review   By FieldTech on Home Depot - Jul 29, 2009

I purchased this model last year and it worked fine but half way through the second trim of 09 and it suddenly stopped. Tried to restart it and a metallic sound came from inside housing. I disassemble and reassemble million dollars machines so a trimmer was easy to take apart. I found the flywheel "key" broken. I checked around and found the replacement part which is half the cost of the trimmer?????? I gave it a one star because it did work flawlessly one year.

this is very good i used this trimmer for at least 6 hours of very hard use..no problems starting if you can follow instructions i upgraded to the real easy string head and another great product makes re spooling the line so simple ..and i also bought the tiller attachment which works very well the machine has more then enough power to run it...only 1 THING RYOBI NEEDS TO PUT A BETTER SPARK PLUG IN THIS MACHINE IT ALWAYS RAN BUT SEEMED A LIL SLUGGISH UNTIL MACHINE WAS FULLY HOT I SUSPECTED THE SPARK PLUG I UPGRADED TO THE E3 SPARK PLUG REPLACEMENT AND I DIDNT HAVE TO WAIT TO HAVE FULL POWER. BELIEVE ME I WORKED THIS MACHINE AND I RAN MULTIPLE TANKS OF GAS THREW THIS AND CUTTING THREW KNEE DEEP GRASS MOST OF THE TIME..THE PROBLEM IS NOT THE MACHINE

Works for Me!
5 Star Review   By rono9 on Home Depot - Jul 4, 2009

Picked up one of these to replace a 12 year old homelite trimmer. Don't need a super deluxe model. So any of the basic trimmers would suffice. Looked at another Homelite, Craftsman, this one. Even though some of you folks disliked this unit due to difficult starting, I have had my experiences with many 2 cycle engine tools only to find that at times, ALL have starting problems. They require some adjustments ad maintenance from time to time. I had no trouble starting the Ryobi, 4-5 pulls and after a warm engine, restarts were even easier; one pull. Overall, this unit works great, does what it's designed to do. And it has bump feed. You can spend alot more by buying the "elite" professional brands, but with proper care and maintenance, the"homeowner" models work just as well. I recommend this one.

Peice of Junk
1 Star Review   By aforsett on Home Depot - Jun 30, 2009

Well, I read the reviews and saw that the person who uses it for many lawns a week liked it, so I thought I would give it a shot. It started, but after I used it about 2 min. died. It took 10 min to start and the same thing happened I took it to a repair man and he said, return it. There was something mechanically wrong with it. If you are going to gamble this, buy the $9.99 insurance. I got to return the thing for full refund even though I threw out the box and the receipt. I bought the $279.99 RYOBI and it runs like a charm. My advise, you get what you pay for so do not cheap out.

Great Trimmer
5 Star Review   By KS7897 on Home Depot - Jun 23, 2009

I was replacing a trimmer that has lasted about 5 years. Purchase this unit due to the price and the attachments. I have a small mowing business and I have used on about 15 yards a week for the past 6 weeks. In fact I have even had to add line it has been used so much. NO PROBLEMS. The trimmer starts on the 4th or 5th pull when cold and on the 1st or 2nd pull after it has trimmed and I shut it off and switch attachments. The unit has plenty of power and has never bogged down trimming. So far so good!! Very happy with the purchase.

Piece of Junk
1 Star Review   By MattD on Home Depot - Jun 23, 2009

I hurt my foot the other day kicking this thing because it is such a piece of junk. I bought it months ago and it has been a pain since day one. I regret not taking it back when I had the chance. As everyone else has said, it fails to start most of the time, especially if you've been using it and it has had a chance to warm up. It is easy to load string but it always breaks back inside the head so I spend more time taking the head apart and pulling the string out then I do actually doing any trimming. By the time I get the string back out, the thing won't start. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS, I know the price is appealing, but you'll spend more money in the end when you give up on it and buy a better one.

Not Worth the Shoulder Pain!
1 Star Review   By GaryMD on Home Depot - Jun 22, 2009

My wife purchased the Ryobi curved shaft weedwacker for $99 for my Father's Day present in 2009. It would be my first gas powered weedwacker. I followed all directions on assembly and fuel mixture. It started on the 4th pull which was great. Then after 10 minutes of use - it died. I reread the manual and pulled the cord close to 50 times. I waited 1/2 hour then it restarted and again died 10 minutes later. I was very dissappointed as this was my first foray into Ryobi gas powered tools. I returned it the following day and bought the Echo for double the price. The saleman, who owned one for 5 years, convinced me that it was an easy to start, dependable machine. I used it and already love it, although now I'm waiting for my shoulder to stop hurting from all the Ryobi cord pulling. My advice - leave the Ryobi on the rack.

Ryobi 26cc String Trimmer
1 Star Review   By RickJam on Home Depot - Jun 17, 2009

I bought this thing thinking it was good especially for the price, well that was mistake. Returned this product because after running for around less than 30 minutes it would fail to start again until it cooled down. It starts fine the first time, just not once it has heated up. Followed the instructions to mix the container of oil with one gallon of gasoline. DON’T BUY

Tuneups
1 Star Review   By jeth on Home Depot - Jun 16, 2009

One thing buyers should beware of is whether or not they are reasonably close to an authorized repaid shop for service. A lengthy trip, plus a potential for a high priced service can easily make this tool less than desireable. For example, many others have complained of having trouble starting it, both when cold and also when hot. Other complaints also indicate that there are often carburetor problems that could be cured if the unit were adjusted properly. My unit for example, is apparently running very lean, and tends to shut down with any sudden change in the throttle position. You have to engage it very carefully and be sure not to release the throttle too quickly. The problem is that the only adjustment Ryobi allows is the idle adjustment. The two carburetor adjustment screws require a special tool which Ryobi says they can't supply because of EPA regulations.

Great Product, Great Price
5 Star Review   By JoeYardGuy on Home Depot - Jun 16, 2009

I was a first time home buyer and needed a low cost trimmer for a .25 acre yard. I liked the price and the Expand-It options for blower and bush trimmer. Although I havent bought any expansions yet that option is always there. I have owned this equipment for nearly 2 years and am still using the original 1 gal of gas I bought when I purchased the trimmer, talk about efficient! Plenty of power, easy to start and easy read quick reference guide right on the shaft by the handle.

Failed to start after heating up
1 Star Review   By slcmower on Home Depot - Jun 14, 2009

We returned this product because after running for only a few minutes it would fail to start again until it cooled down. It starts fine the first time, just not once it has heated up. We followed the instructions to mix the container of oil with one gallon of gasoline. We also bought the edger attachment. On the lowest setting the edger cut way too far into the lawn, leaving .5 inch of dirt exposed.

Ryobi Weed Eater
2 Star Review   By Armando on Home Depot - Jun 9, 2009

This ryobi was well designed except i think it was made as a joke item. It works for around less than 30 minutes than it gets real hot?? this is normal for most weed eaters though this ryobi's gas tank's screw and tank, you could feel it getting hotter? It's ok, because it seems it was designed to not run for a long period, so don't worry if you think it will interfere with the fuel. I think it just stops because it get's too hot, or maybe my fuel i am using is not real good? I'm going to give it one more try. Again, next time i use it, i'm emptying the tank clean, and then remixing fresh gas with 2-cycle oil. Hopefully it will measure and not turn off even after 1 hour?

Do not purchase
1 Star Review   By Madcity on Home Depot - Jun 8, 2009

This is the first time I have taken the time to review a product, until now. I followed regular maintenance of the trimmer, but within 18 months it's worthless. I have spent $100 on a repair and still no succes. The only repairman in town willing to even work on ryobyi said he had a wall full of broken trimmers, that people don't even bother to pick up because of the high cost of repairs with little guarantee of success. Don't take just my word, ask your local small engine repair shops if they would recommend this product.

1 Star Review   By mike92407sb on Home Depot - Jun 6, 2009

I bought this thing thinking it was good especially for the price, well that was mistake" if its to good to be true it probably is" says it all! when you put it on start and pull the string it wont start then when after your arm feels like following off, it starts then you put the lever on run, oh it gets better the lever sticks and you have to use your finger to move the lever system inside the unit behind the plastic guard. Ahhh thought that was it.. nope when i was getting excited about cutting which has lots of power it sputter and shut off, and i couldn't start it again. Thought you were done HA!! nope the cord is loose and wont go back in right! yeah so if you want problems buy it. "fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me"

Awful Product
1 Star Review   By javollme on Home Depot - May 25, 2009

We moved into our new house and one of the first purchases I needed to make was a mower and a string trimmer for the yard. I am very sorry that I decided to purchase this Ryobi string trimmer. I wish I had seen this review sooner because I am having a lot of the same problems and then more! I did like the fact that you could have interchangable attachments so I purchased the edger attachment as well. Out of the box it worked fine for about 3 weeks and then it started having throttling problems and it would not stay on once started....to make matters worse; it was also not able to get up to full speed. I took it to a shop and they said that this was normal for this trimmer and mentioned that they saw A LOT of them coming through the shop. That problem was fixed and then I really started seeing another reviewed complaint....LOUD..the thing can be heard from the neighborhood next to ours. Shocking discovery this year when I got it out for the season...it broke again. This time it is the starter pulley that broke. I have just had to order this part and awaiting for it to be fixed again. I am not willing to put much more into this thing before just trashing it....never again will I buy a Ryobi gas product.

Save Your Money
1 Star Review   By help222 on Home Depot - May 23, 2009

I bought this because it works with my older Ryobi add on trimmer head and blower. My old trimmer head unit was great. Started everytime for the past 5 years until this spring. It had a hard life so I bought this unit. Terrible design, the head is on top and the heat from it will burn your arm if your not careful. The little gas tank is on the bottom and will not make it through a small yard without having to refuel. Ryobi should have left a good design alone. I guess I will have to put up with having to buy a stand alone blower rather than use this trimmer. It going back to the store next week.

J U N K!!!
1 Star Review   By NewStihlOwner on Home Depot - May 23, 2009

This whip isn't worth the gas I used to go buy it. Assembly......easy, fairly easy to start, and that is all the good I have to say about it. I used the supplied oil with 89 octane gas, read and understood the owners manual. I assembled it, fueled it up, and then the dissapointment began. The motor is EXTREAMLY under powered, the unit is unbalanced and unless you are 5'5" tall you will find yourself reaching or bending to use this whip, I'm 6'0" and was very uncomfortably while using it..... WHEN IT WOULD RUN! I used about a quater tank of gas and the motor stalled and would not refire. The next day I tried to start it again with no luck, so I replaced the spark plug and it still wouldn't start. The cord still pulled easily so the motor wasn't siezed, maybe there was a hole in the piston, I don't know. I boxed it up and returned it for a refund. I took my money from the return plus another $75 and bought a STIHL and I'm VERY happy with my purchace. This just goes to show that CHEAPER isn't always a DEAL!!

I bought this product 4 years ago and some attachments to go with it. I used it normally every year. This year I ran it a few times and it recently blew the seal in the engine. I honestly can't complain. Its been a good trimmer, started when I wanted it to, ran when I needed it to. You know a few bad eggs shouldn't spoil the bunch. I am going to the store tonite to purchase another one. For the money, this trimmer is worth it.

JUNK
1 Star Review   By ryobigarbage on Home Depot - May 18, 2009

I purchased this "trimmer" last summer. I have had nothing but problems with it basically since the first time I used it. It is very hard starting, and the trimmer line always breaks off just trimming a moderate amount of grass! I spend more time relining the trimmer than actually cutting grass with it. I guess I got what I paid for! JUNK

Garbage
1 Star Review   By Sorearm on Home Depot - May 9, 2009

I have always bought and used Ryobi products but this is a piece of junk. Brand new and it won't start. Taking it back and will buy another brand that actually runs.

No problems
5 Star Review   By Wuffy on Home Depot - May 1, 2009

I have had none of the problems the others have mentioned about starting issues or wear issues. I have found the trimmer starts easily if primed and set to start and then restarts after hard use with no problem. It also works great with the attachments and gets a lot of use with all 3 that I currently have. I have the trimmer of course and then I have the tiller and edger. It even sat in the shed through a hard winter with gas treated with Sta-Bil and it started right up the next spring.

Starting issues
4 Star Review   By bbLA on Home Depot - May 1, 2009

In the past 3 years I have been through 2 gas weedeaters and 2 electric ones. I bought weedeater brand ones and they were awful... never ran... I hate bump feeds so... I bought black endecker brand that said that it would never suck sting up well 5 mins into itt did that and I returned it that evening. The other one was not powerful enought to cut hair! If I wanted to change the head to an easy feeder that I can in about 2 seconds I had to have a gas trimmer but I hate them because the mixtures have to be just right, the are heavy and being small I cannot start them without laying on the ground and pulling until I die. I wanted a light one that was is easy to start, did not cost a million dollars and I can change the head to something very very easy! I love this one! I can start this one on the ground with some ease. I have had problems with it not re starting it but after a few kicks and pulls it starts up. I can change the head with about with $20.

Works Great!
5 Star Review   Home Depot

I was a little hesitant to purchase this based upon some of the poor reviews, but for the price I couldn't pass it up. I've used it a couple times already and not had a single issue, it fired right up on the second pull right out of the box! It has plenty of power, and the start assist is a great feature. I even restarted it shortly after using it, something several people have complained about not being able to do. My only complaint is that the accessories are a little pricey, such as the tiller and edger attachments, but still cheaper than purchasing separate tools.

Great value
5 Star Review   By Oldeman on Home Depot - Sep 25, 2008

I bought mine about two months ago and it is VERY strong. It has never failed to start quickly. My yard is 1 1/2 acres and is overgrown so I'm making good use of it. I wish the fuel tank was larger but maybe it's a blessing because it gives me an excuse to take a break when the fuel runs out.

Great Trimmer Once You Figure Out How to Start It
4 Star Review   By Yellowjacket on Home Depot - Aug 31, 2008

I bought this trimmer despite mixed reviews. The bad ones were mostly about starting problems. I too had problems -- I followed the instructions to the letter, and it would start right up, and then sputter and die before I could get to the trigger. Then I discovered that if you move the starting lever from Start to Run as soon as the engine starts to sputter, it picks back up and runs fine. Ryobi says nothing about this in the owner's manual. Once I started following this process, the trimmer starts and runs perfectly every time. This may sound confusing if you haven't read the instructions and seen the trimmer, but believe me, it works! Overall, this is a great performing product. It took on a thick patch of overgrown weeds with no problems. And the price is right! I bought an edging attachment with the money I saved over competitive products.

hard to start, hard to load line
2 Star Review   By blerp on Home Depot - Aug 5, 2008

This unit hasn't held up well. After use over a couple of weeks it is now hard to start and hard to reload line. Pay more and get a good Echo unit. They are assembled, ready to go. My Echo SRM-210 has been working well for a couple of years. The cheaper Ryobi was for my son and he has had nothing but problems. Don't buy

Ryobi 30cc String Trimmer
5 Star Review   Home Depot

This is an excellent product. I am so glad I took a chance and tried it. The trimmer has a lot of power and started very easy. It came with the bump reel and string insert type of head. This trimmer is worth every cent.

Good Product
4 Star Review   By zepica on Home Depot - Jul 13, 2008

I don't know why everyone is having so much trouble starting this trimmer. I did the first time I tried to restart it after turning it off. But when I followed the direction for a warm start, it started right up. So, the moral is to follow directions.

DON'T BUY, DON'T BUY
1 Star Review   By Manija on Home Depot - Jul 2, 2008

I returned this trimmer to HD after my second week of frustration. It is hard to start when it's cold it's hard to start when it is warm. When you can get it to start it is a powerful trimmer. DON'T BUY!

Very Good Product
4 Star Review   By Cdarthead on Home Depot - Jun 9, 2008

I found the trimmer very easy to start. It is lightweight enough that my wife can actually use it. Overall a good product initially, just got it so we will see how long it lasts.

POORLY MADE
1 Star Review   Home Depot

THIS IS THE WORST TRIMMER I HAVE EVER SEEN. I HAD A 32 CC RYOBI THAT LASTED FOR 6 YEARS. I BOUGHT THIS ONE SO IT WOULD WORK WITH THE ATTACHMENTS AND WENT THRU 2 THAT WOULD NOT RUN RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX. THERE THE SAME AS THE HOMLITES. BY AN ECHO AND BE HAPPY!!!!!

Simply too hard to start
2 Star Review   By sbishop on Home Depot - May 27, 2008

This is the hardest engine I have ever owned in my life to get started. We are talking half a dozen or more pulls to start it cold, even when you follow the directions exactly. Once you get it started, it takes forever to warm up, restart-die, restart-die, restart-die, restart-die....get the picture? Once you get it running, don't shut it off. Like another reviewer said, it simply WILL NOT restart at all when warm. You have to let it sit for about an hour, then try. If you ever get it to start, and warmed up, it works great. Smooth and powerful, so I am begrudingly giving it 2 stars.

Works well if you can start it
3 Star Review   By mwierm on Home Depot - May 16, 2008

I've used this trimmer about four times now and I like it. I don't 'love' it because it's difficult to get started. Once you get it started you need to finish the job without stopping. If you turn the trimmer off and try to start it again, forget it. You have to let it sit for an hour or so before it'll start again.

Not Durable
1 Star Review   By beejaycee on Home Depot - May 12, 2008

34 days after purchase, it broke and spent 3 months in the shop. 9 months later, it broke again. Both times it has broken right before the summer months. I would not buy one again. In fairness, my father bought one also and once he replaced a defective gas cap, his runs great but he doesn't use his as much as I use mine -- I have 4 different attachments; trimmer, edger, blower, and cultivator.
