Expensive for a consumer level mower but works well
4 Star Review   Home Depot

I have just under an acre I tend to. Here in Florida, mowing the grass can be as frequent as every five days in the summer if you want to keep the lawn looking tidy. The Snapper Hydrodrive walk behind mower I purchased used in 1998 had served me well but it had three years of commercial use before I bought it and the put it through another twelve years of moderate use. It still worked well but was showing its age and I wanted a sit-down mower. I've got a lot of trees, planting beds, and other obstacles so I wasn't interested in a tractor style mower. I've had a little experience on commercial zero-turn mowers and thats the direction I decided on for me. The Toro SS4235 is what I settled on. I liked the twin-cylinder engine, high back seat, and plenty of service and parts sources in my area. The SS4235 arrived at my local Toro dealer about a week after I ordered it from HD's website. The purchase included free setup and delivery which was carried out by the Toro dealer. The dealer called me and arranged a time for delivery the next day. The delivery person gave me a basic rundown of the machine but I hurried him along his way. His presentation was annoyingly simple but I understand not everyone has experience with this sort of machine of even a basic mechanical background. The SS4235 starts instantly with a twist of the ignition key and I have yet to use the choke. I keep the speed lever on the slower setting since I have more close quarters maneuvering than open mowing. Even though my old Snapper had differential steering, the SS4235 still took me about an hour of use before I could freely maneuver without much thought. Height adjustment of the mowing deck is very easy but I keep it at its maximum setting of 4-1/2" for my thick St. Augustine lawn. I never understand why so many people mow their grass so short needlessly stress the grass, increasing it's need for irrigation, and making their lawn more susceptible to weeds. The SS4235 leaves an attractive even cut. The large wheels seem to cause minimal stress to the grass as long as you don't make sharp turns. Sharp turns do cause the rear tires to chew up the grass leaving unattractive spots as the tires scrub in opposite directions. Not a criticism of the SS4235 though as the same thing happens with every zero-turn mower I've ever used. Smoother turf tires alleviate the problem some but at a loss of some traction if you need to mow steeper grades. I suspect the scrubbing during sharp turns will decrease a bit as the rear tires wear a little. Overall I think the machine is well built. So far after about 12 hours of use, I've had no issues. However this is not a commercial lever mower. The materials are lighter, the deck is stamped sheet metal rather than welded, and there is a lot of plastic. Though keep in mind the SS4235 is not advertised as a commercial mower either. I'm just a little skeptical how well it will hold up with time and being that it cost $2,500, its a significant investment for most homeowners. Overall I'm happy with the machine. It leaves a great looking lawn, is comfortable to use, operation is very simple... and its got a cup holder!

5 Star Review   By GregH on Home Depot - Sep 9, 2012

I have now used this mower a total of 2.5 hours and have mowed the lawn 5 times. Kudos to "Harry's Saw Shop Augusta, Ga." that set it up and delivered it to me full of gas and ready to use. This mower has saved me tons of time. Did take about a half hour to get the feel of operating it before I actually turned the blades on. I'm very happy with the performance. It has cut my mowing time in half. I also purchased the TCSS Recycler Kit and installed it upon delivery. Glad I did. I did not purchase the toro hour meter or cover because of the bad reviews. I did purchase a ProPower G711 Mechanical Hour Meter for $17.99 and a Mossi 21012 zero turn cover for $26.61 from Amazon. They both are great and work perfect with this mower.

4 Star Review   Home Depot

I bought this mower 3 weeks ago. I was using an old 12.5 HP MTD tractor with the same turning radius as a fire truck. The ZTR mower cut an hour off of my mowing time because I have a lot of trees and a funny-shaped yard. This machine should come with a run time meter. I paid an extra 10 bucks for this accessory. Toro spent more than that pre-wiring the harness for the instrument and then safing off the wires. The mulching kit is a good accessory to have. It leaves no visible evidence of clippings and I don't waste any time on bagging. I have had none of the troubles others have mentioned.

I made a mistake in buying the Time Cutter
1 Star Review   By Dissatisfied on Home Depot - Jul 25, 2012

It has been dissapointment from the beginning. In addition to lawn mowing we purchased it to cut some tall grass. The mower left some grass uncut between the blades. This year the mower would just quit. Sometimes it would restart only to quit in about 30 feet. Many times it just would not start. I took it to a local repair shop and they found that the motor was not grounding properly. They added a ground wire directly to the motor and now it starts. This was a factory oversight that I paid $50 to correct. Additionaly, now one of the stearing hydrostaic dives does not work properly. Sometimes the mower gets in tigh situations and there is no way to get out because the left hydro will not back up. We have had a Cub zero turn for 4 years with no problems. I contacted thge Toro web sight and recieved no satisfaction. I would not reccommend this mower.

I have owned this mower for eight months and put approx 250 hrs. on it. Only work done on it was to replace the belt once. This mower compares favorably with machines that cost more. Works well in yards that require tight manuvering. I do maintain my equipment well.

First Zero turn
5 Star Review   By DylisTN on Home Depot - Jun 4, 2012

Tractor type vs. Zero turn: I have 5 sections of a couple hundred square feet to a quarter acre, Plus a 1.5 acre section. Took 3 hours on average to do a decent job with a tractor type riding mower. Takes about an hour to do a much better job with this mower. A week ago, I went to Home Depot (After doing some online research) to look at the Zero turn mowers. I wanted a Kawasaki engine on a Zero Turn that would ride in the back Of my 2001 Nissan Frontier. I was not hard over on Toro, but they have a good rep. At Home depot they had a 50 inch and a 42 inch Toro on display, both with Kawasaki engines. Measured the 42 inch and determined that the rear wheels would fit between the wheel humps in my truck. So did the deal. They brought out a mower with a Kholer engine. I refused it. Was told that the display was last years model. Any way, I went home with the display. Got nothing against Kholer, but have had really good experiences with Japanese small engines. Learning curve was short! Mower is rugged! Fits in my truck. Looks like I mowed and trimmed. Wish I had made this change, years ago. Toro/Home depot had the best price in class.

Good Mower Works Well
4 Star Review   By Rick on Home Depot - May 29, 2012

Mower is everything I expected. I cut my mowing time in half. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is that it is a little scary on hills. No brakes other than the reverse. I know that is the nature of the mower, but it is what it is. Great size deck for a lawn with a lot of trees and mom's gardens.

Definitely worth the investment.
5 Star Review   By samfatboy on Home Depot - May 27, 2012

I had a 25 year old Snapper that bit the dust in the fall of 2010, and went to Home Depot and bought the TimeCutter ZTR. I sweated spending two grand on a mower -- got it on sale - end of season. Once I got it home and used it the first time, my concerns about spending the money dissapeared. Time IS money to me, and I went from two hours for a decent cut, to 40 minutes for a great cut. And it is flat out fun to use this mower. Got the bagger and the hitch attachment and use it to plug aerate and dethatch -- my yard looks great! I have so much more time to work on other things now. I don't know why anyone that does not have a lot of inclines on their property would not buy a ZTR. ZTRs don't do well on inclines, but for getting around complicated landscape, they are excellent. And the speed is really hard to believe.Take it from me, 7 MPH versus a Deer Tractor at 5.5 MPH makes a big difference. It is not just the faster speed, but the way the hydrostatic drive works. Everything is so much faster than using a standard tractor or rider. The deck assembly comes off with just the removal of one cotter pin, for easy cleaning and blade maintenance. TimeCutter is the perfect name. 1/3 of the way into this year's mowing season, the investment has already paid off in the hours I have saved using my Toro.

I have had no issues with it and have used it for over a month. Also the priced had gone down and Home Depot honored the new price as well as a 10% coupon with a refund to my credit card. HOME DEPOT ROCKS. Would recommend in a heartbeat.

I recommend this mower
5 Star Review   By HappyMower on Home Depot - May 19, 2012

I purchased this mower in March 2012 and have used it 5 times and it works great. I would recommend this mower if you want to cut down your mowing time. It has cut my mowing time in half. I have not had any of the problems other people mentioned. I installed the mulching kit and it works well. I do feel a mower at this price should have an hour meter and hitch as standard features.

Great Mower!
5 Star Review   By HappySam on Home Depot - May 17, 2012

I haven't experienced any of the things others have written about, and Toro has a great reputation for handling warranty. I have had this mower for a year and it is perfect for my yard. I can start after my neighbor with the tractor and finish before he does...and my yard looks a lot better! Because time is money, this is great mower at a great price!

I bought this mower on 1/20/12 .It ran great for ONE WEEK. Then the Break Control Module died. For those of you who may not know, if the BCM is inop, the mower WILL NOT START. Today is 5/15/2012 and Toro STILL does not have the part to repair this mower.

Enjoying it so far
5 Star Review   By JSUPreston on Home Depot - May 15, 2012

I have to admit, I'd rather have a root canal than do yard work. I have about 1.5 acres to cut. I've been doing half of it with an Ariens Honda powered push mower (very good push mower). Took me about 1.5 to 2 hours to push mow the .75 acres that I've been cutting. I've cut grass with this mower twice, and am starting to enjoy doing a little yard work. It only took me an hour the last time I cut, and that's because after I mowed my front yard, I took off the bagger and then ran out of gas just before finishing. If it weren't for those two things, I'd probably finished my yard in 30 to 40 minutes. It cuts really nice, almost like I push mowed it, and that's with no adjustments. I learned once I got the accessories that if you buy the bagger, DO NOT buy the engine guard or hitch accessory, since they come with the bagger. At least I was able to return the extra parts to a local HD for credit back to my account. Also, if this is your first ZTR, expect a learning curve. I ran over a couple of things I didn't mean to the first time out. Put it in low gear, and take it easy the first few times cutting until you get the hang of it. I'm very impressed with how well built this unit is. Hopefully with good maintenance, I can get 15-20 years out of it.

Don't buy it!!!
1 Star Review   By Brian on Home Depot - May 4, 2012

I bought the SS 4235 last September and used it only a few times before the grass turned brown. I have used it about 10 time this year and I am having the same problem with it cutting off whenever I try the bring the handles in and go forward. At first I thought it was the button in the seat, but that wasn't it, then I found that there are sensor buttons under the control arms. Not sure how all this stuff is routed, but now the darn thing won't even move. It sounds like the clutch slipping in a car and eventually the engine dies under the strain. What do I do now? I have this big $2600 mower that needs to be seen by a technician...how do I get it there? I just want to get rid of it and go back to a push mower.

Great buy....good price
5 Star Review   By Satisfied on Home Depot - Apr 6, 2012

Recently purchased this ZTR mower (except with the Kawasaki engine). I previously owned a 16hp 42" cut riding mower (with no hydro or power steering) for many years, and mowing time would normally take about 2 to 2 1/2 hrs (only 1 acre, but many trees). I thought I would invest in a new ZTR mower. After researching, I decided on the Toro 4235. I have only used it twice now, and could not be happier! It has cut my mowing time down to about an hour. The ease of steering, the power and the speed are absolutely wonderful....a very comfortable ride and an excellent cut.

Toro SS4235
5 Star Review   By LotusV8Man on Home Depot - Mar 15, 2012

This is an excellent piece of machinery! I have had a Snapper 28inch HVAC with a 12hp Briggs engine that ran great for 9 years and then suddenly died. I was deciding between a Cub Cadet RZT42 and this Toro and I am glad I chose this Toro. The Kohler engine is very smooth and powerful and cuts through my thick St Agustine grass effortlessy. Mowing my yard used to take around 1-1 1/2 hours with my old Snapper and now is around 20 minutes with this Toro. I'm not crazy about side discharging the grass as I have been used to mulching my grass for the last 9 years so I will more than likely purchase the kit. A previous reviewer was stating about engine cut off when getting off the seat or when moving on the seat. Although it is a safety feature to cut the engine off when leaving the seat, I have had no issues with this happening when just readjusting my position when seated. I am very happy with this purchase!

This particular model has problems
2 Star Review   By FIGJAM on Home Depot - Mar 5, 2012

I have owned the TimeCutter SS4235 for one year now. I returned the first one because of a problem with the auto shut-off function of the safety interlock system. Basically, if the deck is engaged and you get off the seat the motor shuts down. The mower I bought was shutting down anytime you engaged movement. My second one is now doing the same. I was told by a sales person that this model is having problems with this function. Uhhhh, yeah! I would not recommend this model for purchase.
