Disappointed
2 Star Review   By JWWW on Home Depot - May 27, 2013

I bought this to make my life easier BUT it didn't. Assembly was not too difficult but I am moderately mechanically inclined. Before I go any further let me say that I have problems that make my dominant arm and shoulder weak. Hasn't interfered with me starting the rototiller, mower, blower, trimmer, etc. It started easily with just a couple of pulls but I knew right away if I had to pull many times I wouldn't be able to get it started. The pull start on this machine is tremendously hard. I think it probably has to do with it using a flywheel to supposedly make it easier to start, it doesn't. Also the way it stands is very unstable when you pull the starter, tends to tip easily. Heaven help you if it bogs down and gets clogged, it is nearly impossible to pull the starter. Be very careful not to feed "viney", stringy material because it will tangle and stop the machine. It also vibrates a lot which might be expected. Unless you are in good physical shape (not just think you are) then this probably is not the machine for you. I will soon be selling this thing I hope.

This chipper worked great!
5 Star Review   By FireSurf on Home Depot - Apr 30, 2013

It was easy to set up except the oil fill. The oil fill access is difficult but easier if you use a long neck funnel. I used it for two days extensivly after I received it and it performed great. My only complaint is the oil fill but I still gave it 5 stars because of its excellent performance under heavy use.

shoddy construction but chips like a banshee
4 Star Review   By jarrettfan on Home Depot - Apr 30, 2013

the usual pros and cons I've seen in other reviews - hopper holes not correctly aligned so I had to enlarge them with file to fit; oil fill very awkward and need the hose funnel; lost nuts into the chamber while trying to attach the hopper, but fortunately there's an easily removed plate and I was able to get them out. Really powerful and good at chipping. Anti-throwback skirt in hopper useless, just lies limp - I got too close and got some brush back in the face - fortunately was wearing the goggles. Pretty heavy for me to haul up my steep hill. But, it really, really gets the job done

Works fine for small yard use.
5 Star Review   By Saguaro6 on Home Depot - Apr 16, 2013

I use mine for a 1/3 acre yard to chop up palm fronds and tree limbs and bush trimmings. This thing eats branches like my Labrador retriever eats meat. Sort of inhales it rather than chewing it! It ate a 3 inch 3 foot brach of dry, hard wood in a second. (I was trying to feed it slowly, but it sucked it in). No problems for me with the bag falling off. No problems with hard warm starting (in AZ), no problems with hole lineup on assembly. No problems adding oil with a long funnel. It will eat a queen palm frond as fast as you can feed it. It chewed up green citrus branches and leaves if you crunched them up a bit to get them in the leaf chute. green palm fronds chew up pretty good with some pieces maybe 4 inches long. i found you can feed it back through if you want them smaller, but this is more than good for the mulch pile. The exit chute only clogged when i let the bag get too full, but if you give the bag a kick once in a while, you can sense how full it is. Lots of power. You can drag it down by ramming in a lot quickly, but it comes right back up by the time you grab the next branch. It eats fast enough for my liking, but I'm not commercial or anything, just yard use. Chip size is dependent on whether you feed into the branch chute or leaf chute. I use the leaf chute for most 3/4 inch stuff and smaller. Plenty of power and really a sturdily built unit. I'm a manufacturing engineer, so look for stuff that lasts. Plastic hopper is thick and gusseted in the right places, and the rest is steel. I expect this thing to run a long time.

Very good machine
5 Star Review   By Scotty on Home Depot - Apr 9, 2013

Excellent machine. Had it assembled and running within a few minutes of getting out of the box. It has a heavy flywheel so don't expect it to be quite as easy as your lawnmower, but mine started on the first pull. Twigs occasionally get caught up in the top hopper if they have long pieces, but adding a little more on top takes it right down into the beast. Love it. Just wish they weren't quite so pricey, but since you can't rent these machines, we are kinda stuck.

Great product for the price
5 Star Review   By chipperlady on Home Depot - Apr 9, 2013

Have only used this chipper once but works really well. Easy to assemble (took about 30 minutes to attach the leaf hood) and easy to use. The only complaint is that it has difficulty chipping crooked branches; crooked branched often get stuck. Also, we were successful in chipping branched up to about two and half inches; we tried some bigger branches but this caused the chipper to stall. Overall good chipper for the price.

What a workhorse
5 Star Review   By Peabs on Home Depot - Mar 27, 2013

Any of the previous noted problems on assembly and fit were gone on the unit I bought. Took about 10 minutes to assemble. Yes the oil inlet is inconveniently located and it is a little hard to pull, but it chewed through the 3 trees worth of Palm fronds I cut down. Palm fronds are notoriously hard to chip as they can be so stringy. This unit ate them up and spit them out without a problem, even when the unit pulled them from my hand and flooded the input chute.

This product has great features
4 Star Review   By Thrifty on Home Depot - Sep 18, 2012

The instructions are confusing and some don't apply to the unit. The collector bag attachment does not seal well and allows mulch to escape and pile up. The engine starts easily but is a heavy pull to start and takes considerable effort.

Great Machine so far
4 Star Review   By BranchEatingBastard on Home Depot - May 29, 2012

I had the same problem with the hopper tub holes not lining up. I had to file alot! Could only start even when warm with partial choke. Cutting chamber will clog and can burn debris if not noticed promptly. The bag is small and awkward to change. Runs strong and chewed eveything I have so far.

Excellent product
4 Star Review   By John on Home Depot - May 21, 2012

This is an excellent machine for shredding small branches and chipping large ones. The Earthquake does a great job churning through a pile of dead branches and limbs. The engine starts on the first pull everytime. Both the chipper and the shredder pull the branches into the cutting edges once you get them started. This machines works best on dry branches and twigs. You can shred green material and soft plant waste but it will likely clog eventually. Fortunately it is not too hard to clean.

A good machine for the price.
4 Star Review   By RobbieG on Home Depot - May 15, 2012

I like everything about this machine except the way you have to attach the chip-collection bag. The drawstring for closing the bag won't stay tight, and the lips on the machine that you have to hook the bag onto do not protrude enough that the bag will stay secured when chipping. The only other minor problem was that the holes in the plastic hopper did not line up with the bolt pattern on the machine when attaching the hopper. I had to drill out the holes in the plastic in order for the bolts to pass through into the hopper. This problem took only five minutes to fix, but it is a sign of sloppy design. I'm a retired power tool designer and I would do better. It looks like the hopper attachment means was an afterthought.

Works well, poor instructions
4 Star Review   By DocH on Home Depot - May 15, 2012

Works very well, handling up to the max branch size as advertized. Starts easily, have run it about 12 hours so far. I try to avoid the large hopper when possible, as it produces larger pieces and the safety flaps tend to snag branches. Hopper assembly was "interesting" as it referred to pieces and operations that were not there/not possible, and English was clearly not their first language. Overall pleased though.

Does everything it claims to.
4 Star Review   By lapslgg1 on Home Depot - May 1, 2012

Great machine for the price. Eats juniper branches like no bodies business. Gave it a 4 for "Ease of Use" because it is hard to pull, but it has never failed to start on the first pull. Gave it a 4 for"Quality" because bolt holes of the hopper did not line up, I had to dril new ones. All in all a great deal.

Very happy
5 Star Review   By WimberleyCedarChopper on Home Depot - Jan 1, 2012

I did a lot of research before buying the Earthquake. I have used it for about six hours chipping cedar (juniper) trees. It is a pretty hard pull when starting but it is not unusual for it to start on the first crank. I ranked it "good" for ease of use due to the hard crank. I do not use the catcher bag so I cannot offer a review on that component. Also, mine was pre-assembled, at the store so I cannot comment on assembly. I get a wonderful feeling when the baby chews up cedar trees!!

Performs well, but has issues
4 Star Review   By NewPropertyOwner on Home Depot - Jun 26, 2011

When the unit was delivered, it had punctured the box in several locations, but appeared undamaged. The instructions weren't up to date. If you're the type of person who needs detailed assembly instructions you'll struggle with this. I added a few of my own washers where the plastic was being screwed down. The oil fill is a real bother. Somebody should be shot for that one. It's under the unit where there's no room to pour the oil straight from the can. You'll need a funnel with a hose. It's hard to pull the starter rope since it has a heavy flywheel. Make sure you follow the starting instructions - they'll minimize the number of pulls. It chewed through my pile of up to 1" semi-dry branches in a hurry. I filled two 32 gallon cans in about an hour. The bag attachment is chintzy. It's easy to get off, but unless you have three hands it takes some coordination to put it on effectively. The B&S engine wouldn't start after the 4th bag. I haven't started working that problem. I have a lot of criticisms of the unit, but it's extremely effective at chewing branches. I highly recommend it over a unit that doesn't has the flaws, but isn't as good at doing the job at hand.

Gets the Job done
4 Star Review   By kaybe on Home Depot - May 1, 2011

Purchased this for alot of brush/leaf clearing which was never finished when we built. Chose this model over a little higher priced ones and it has definitely proven it can do what I needed. Can reduce an area, with 2 people working , in about 3-4 hrs. Had it for a couple of weeks and have already cleared out 2 good sized areas. Ran it without the bag because we had to stop too many times to empty it and it was getting difficult to start after multiple shutdowns. All in all very pleased.

Easy Setup
5 Star Review   By enternicknamehere on Home Depot - Apr 13, 2011

Received this chipper today. --#1 Pro == Made in the USA --Delivery was from a third party but was executed quickly and without issue. --Setup was easy, just attach the hopper with a few bolts and add some oil (included) & gas. --Engine started on 1/4 pull the first time. From the sounds of this machine the sticks, brush and bamboo in my yard do not stand a chance. --I have not chipped anything yet but have seen many positive reviews online. --Oil fill is awkward. make sure you have a narrow & long funnel --Overall Construction looks very sturdy & will last a long time if taken care of. --The one con was with the hopper. 2 of the holes that required bolts needed slight modification. It is made of heavy plastic so no big deal.
