Good value but it has a few problems
2 Star Review   By Budo on Home Depot - May 28, 2013

This is a nice lawn mower when it works. The variable speed forward and reverse is great compared to other machines with fixed gear ratios. It makes it very easy to mow your lawn quickly and control this heavy machine when turning. The belt brake seems to be a poor design. My belt keeps coming off when I let go of the blade clutch. Had to bend brackets to keep it on the pulley system. To make matter worse. There are several screws to get at belt which is housed under a large plastic cover. The main drive brake is also cheap. It is not a variable power brake. all you can do is engage it or not. I learned to use the reverse lever to control my downhill speed. I have a steep slope which causes the mower to speed up when going downhill. I read where other have had issues with the cabling. So far I have not but I see where one cable is already fraying. The two blades do not overlap. One is set further back to produce the complete cut. I though this was a good feature because I would not need to worry about blade alignment and timing but when turning right the offset blades can leave grass uncut in between the blades. Not a big deal but annoying. The height adjustment only changes the front wheel height. Not sure how this will work as far a cut quality but so far I have not notice any issues. I have owned the mower for about 6 weeks.

Broke within an hour of delivery
1 Star Review   By Admin13 on Home Depot - Nov 12, 2012

The second time I started the mower the choke/ throttle broke. I was able to fix the choke by inserting a nail to hold it at maximum power. However, when I engaged the lever to accelerate the handle broke and the mower had minimal horsepower! The mower is getting returned tomorrow.

Not as good as I had hoped
3 Star Review   By Bigjay on Home Depot - Sep 11, 2012

I had high hopes when I bought this mower, but after using it close to 2 years I have mixed emotions on its value.First off I consider myself a pretty physically fit person but I do find this mower hard to manage on some areas of my property. It had to be brought to the shop 5 different times, for blade not engaging or drive train issues(just about had to push it up inclines). Unfortunately I'm not mechanically inclined and have become quite friendly with my dealer. What made it more frustrating, was the 2 week downtime waiting to get it fixed since, I had to totally rely on the dealer to pick it up and drop it off. On a bright note all this work was done under warranty and I hope the last time I had it in to be fixed will be the last time. I love the fact it is built in the USA and it is very sturdy. Maybe I just got a lemon but I would have a hard time recommending anybody to buy this mower.

Great mower, but parts keep breaking
3 Star Review   By TheDude on Home Depot - Jul 29, 2012

First off, this mower is a beast for its size and it cuts easily through tall grass. I love the the hand-squeeze accelerator instead of the traditional transmission, and the ability to back up by simply moving my hand to the slightly smaller reverse lever. Slight inclines are not a problem for this mower, but don't even think about mowing ditches with it, as it is too unmanageable. Unfortunately I can't recommend this mower because of the unbelievably cheap front wheels, which might work fine on a little 22" mower, but not on this 250 lb unit. I have broken three wheels in three months' of mowing because the welds are so poor. This has cost me over $50 in replacement wheels. Ariens should have known better than to put such a lightweight, cheap wheel on such a heavy mower, and they certainly ought to provide a sturdier replacement part. At this point I am hoping to bring the broken wheels to a welder to have the seams beefed up, rather than throwing money away on an endless supply of cheap replacement wheels.

Works, but
2 Star Review   By Twillie on Home Depot - Jul 24, 2012

I have used this mower two seasons now. It will cut heavy grass but not in less than two passes. Any moisture will cause it to plug instantly. If you are over 5'7" your back will ache from bending over to reach the handles-not adjustable and your hands will ache from holding down the safety levers. You will spend considerable time fixing it. The drive system is too complicated and barely adjustable. The best thing about this unit is I didn't spend $3500 for it.

This beast is a must for large lots on variable terrain.
4 Star Review   By Alaskaman77 on Home Depot - Jun 25, 2012

I purchased this mower in May of 2012 and have used it 4 times so far. I have a one acre lot and the old 22 inch push mower was taking me around 2.5 hours a week to mow which is too much time for me to spend in the backyard. The new mower has cut that time to around 1 hour. Its truly amazing how much faster a 34inch cutting area gets the job done. Pro's so far. *Great engine, smooth start every time with zero issues. *Turns on a dime! This mower can turn around any size tree in one pass thanks to the caster wheels on the front. The same goes for mowing around septic field pipes in the yard. Truly amazing. *powerful forward and reverse gear. On the long stretches its a piece of cake to walk behind. *overall quality well built machine that looks like a tank. Cons- *Weak cables. as many other reviewers have commented on. The small diameter throttle cable/ brake cable/ drive cable and reverse cable's seem too small for a machine of this size. I've gone VERY easy on the machine putting it in gear etc as to not strain the cables but they look weaker than they should be. *not being able to install the side bagger attachment without bolts/ and a large plate assembly. Its a huge pain in the butt to go from the mulching kit to the bagger, to pain cutting grass. They should be quick release and designed better. So far I'm very impressed with this mower and I hope that it last for years to come. It was worth every penny for me to purchase this mower to cut down on hours and hours of mowing time.

Very poorly engineered product
1 Star Review   By moveon on Home Depot - Jun 10, 2012

I have one of these for three years now. Fairly good as a mower but nothing but trouble as a mechanical device! Control cables keep breaking - replaced four so far. Front caster wheel and strut fell off and went under the mower, destroying a blade and spindle. Bolt holding the main PTO sheave set to the spindle has sheared off inside the spindle - twice. Can't tip it to work on it because oil from the crankcase enters the cylinder. Drive belts wear and expand quickly and have to be changed too often. Now there has been some failure in the transmission which has caused the transmission shaft to extend and engage the pawl for the emergency brake - so the mower can't be moved. Looks like a few hundred dollars in repair even if I do it myself. If you buy one make sure you have a complete set of shop tools for it.

Gives lawns an excellent cut in short time
4 Star Review   By earthguy on Home Depot - May 30, 2012

Powerful engine maintains high blade speed through heavy turf and uneven terrain, Well designed control and safety features. Starts easily. Only downside so far, is sidehill mowing, but this can usually be avoided by mowing uphill/downhill.

For the price it is okay
4 Star Review   By Dave on Home Depot - Dec 24, 2011

I have had this mower for 2 years. I think it is a good value as compared with a commerical mower; howev,er the parts break frequently. I would not recommend unless you can replace parts yourself; this mower will cost you a fortune if you have to keep taking it to a mower repair shop. I have a sloped lot and it did not do well on the hills due to belt slipping; however, I shortened the engagement spring and it does great now. Also, I have to keep the rear plate off as grass gets into this area and causes the belts to come off. Again, as long as you are a handy person, I think the mower will meet your needs. If you are not handy, don't buy it.

Cuts the grass well. Lacks power on hills and sometimes flat ground. Mower is hard to turn. Easy to lift though in and out of my shed when the deck is lowered. Overall I am pretty happy with the mower. Easy to start and pretty good on gas so far.

3 parts broken in less than 1 mowing season
1 Star Review   By dlvonde on Home Depot - Oct 17, 2011

I have always owned second hand clunkers and spent just as much time fixing them as I did mowing with them. After 10 years of fighting with lawnmowers I decided to hand over some real money and get a nice one for my 1/2 acre yard. After the second mow one of the front wheels had already begun to bend. The quality of the front wheels is terrible and the design is just as bad. The wheels contain large hubs that pop out easily and the assembly has far too much play in it so they slide to the left/right..causing the cheap metal to bend up and making the wheel useless. I ended up going to the hardware store and buying 2 quality wheels with pressed bearings. I also bought some spacers to keep the wheels from slopping around in the assembly. This fixed the front wheels after about $30 and a couple trips to the hardware store. Now I haven't even made it through one mowing season and the blade engage cable has broken. I noticed the blade wasn't coming on so I took the cover off only to find a broken/frayed wire & spring attached to the tension pulley. The wire is obviously too thin for the amount of tension that is required on the blade pulley. Now I will have to get it replaced but if they put the same thin wire on there it will only be a matter of time before it snaps too. Now I am back where I started..fixing the mower instead of mowing with it. Only this time, it's a much more expensive mower. Shame on you Ariens for putting such cheap components on what could have been a good little mower.

Powerful but you need muscles
4 Star Review   By Rene on Home Depot - Sep 13, 2011

The motor on this thing is a beast. The greenest, thickest grass doesn't slow it down. But it can be a bear to manuever. I would receommend it for large, relatively flat lawns without too many obstacles or grade unless you have a smaller push mower for the twisties. Also, I have had to tinker with the cable that engages the forward gear as it builds slack and you lose power and then you better be He-Man.

It is what I expected
4 Star Review   By Brewerswillwinworldseries on Home Depot - Sep 6, 2011

The walk-behind makes short work of large sections of the lawn. It doesn't do as well on angled or hilly sections and if you cut too fast on bumpy sections it cuts unevenly. I still cut the ditch with a 21" walk-behind. Other reviews mentioned the 1-3/4" lowest cutting height, which is OK but when making the last cut for the year I'd like to cut shorter. Overall it is what I expected. It shortens the overall cutting time, but it didn't completely replace my smaller walk-behind.

I love this beast!
5 Star Review   By Lem25 on Home Depot - Sep 6, 2011

I have read several complaints about the need for both hands to be on the controls for operation and can only say it would be very unwise to operate this machine with only one hand given its power and weight. I have really enjoyed how much more quickly I can mow my yard (about 13,000sq/ft of lawn). Starts easy, mows well, simple controls. I use headphones while using to dampen the noise. Love it.

Well constructed but very unwieldy
4 Star Review   By Mower on Home Depot - Sep 6, 2011

I had to use it on a steeply inclined ditch. It would pull downhill if I went across and it was very difficult to pull itself up the hill. Women should not use unless on flat yard.

Awesome machine
5 Star Review   By Jason on Home Depot - Jun 25, 2011

First off, this is shipped from Ariens to your nearest Ariens dealer. The dealer assembles it, makes sure everything works, and then delivers it to your house. As for the mower. I've only had it a month, but have had zero problems. It's a great machine. Plenty of power, easy to maneuver, and can work into some tight places. It fires up every time no problem. It's also pretty good on gas. When comparing it to the Cub Cadet, the Ariens blows it away. The Cub Cadet is either full speed, or stopped. You can change your speed by stopping the mower, and shifting gears. The Ariens has a variable speed. If you squeeze the handle a little, you go slow. If you squeeze it all the way, you're at full speed. For reverse, rotate your hand and squeeze the reverse handle. Once you get the hang of it, you can turn it 180*, rotating on one tire, all while keep the handle squeezed. It is NOT for the weak, it can and will tire you out fast on certain terrains. Overall, if this fits the bill for what you need, I highly recommend it.

Perfect for Large Lots
5 Star Review   By afoodguy on Home Depot - Jun 13, 2011

I have only used it a couple times on a 1/2 acre lot but I get the job done in about 45 minutes or less. It takes a little getting used to but once you get your stride with the mower, you'll make quick work of it.

Good Product for the Price
4 Star Review   By jbp97 on Home Depot - May 9, 2011

Mower has great horsepower and can certainly mow about any size grass (i.e. tall or short) very well. Smooth engine performance and great side discharge for mowing tall grass. Appears to be made of quality parts and certainly like the B&S Motor. Used for approximately 1 month on flat and inclined mowing surfaces. Like the emergency brake, really nice on hills. Controls are easy to use and to get used to. However; hands do get a little tired after an hour or so of use. The height adjustment is cumbersome given you have to lift the front of the mower to change the spacers and pins. But this a minor inconvenience given typically one usually mows at the same level. Doesn't work too well on hills. The front caster wheels allows the front to always want to run down hill and takes signficant effort to keep straight if mowing from side to side. Not too bad on hills if you mow up and down using the forward and reverse controls as braking. But i'm sure this will prematurely wear the belts. Works perfect on relatively flat ground. Although it does not work as good on hills as i would have liked; i really like the mower and intend on keeping it. Certainly appears to be a good mower for the price. About half the cost of a commercial mower.

Cuts well, well built
4 Star Review   By robscpa on Home Depot - May 1, 2011

This mower will cut grass as well as a commercial walk-behind, and better than a lawn tractor. Since tractors use all that power to move your butt around, the big engine on this thing cuts grass like a commercial unit. You won't need a bagger/mulcher, because it annihilates the clippings like a commercial unit does. It's also nicely built, looks and feels like a commercial one. The wheels and casters are full size, heavy duty. The mower tilts up nicely to clean the underside of the deck. You can reverse it without moving your hands. It will take you half the time of a 21" mower. Home Depot delivered it right to my house, and the guy had it already setup, and demo'd it for me. The cons are that the unit does not have individual levers for the drive wheels like a commercial unit. It won't zero turn under power, you have to push it to turn it. It's really not that big of an issue, but I didn't expect it. They are now putting annoying DOUBLE safety features on lawn equipment because people aren't very bright anymore... The single lever, variable drive does move nicely, but the unit doesn't pull as strong or go as fast as I'd like, but moves swiftly enough to cut in a hurry. The deck doesn't go high as I'd like to cut the grass high. The left side is a little vulnerable to scalping when the deck is low. I'm going to add a wheel on that side of the deck to prevent it from scalping or dragging. If you have over an acre, buy a real commercial unit or a zero-turn. If you lack upper body strength, get a smaller mower or a landscaper. Overall, it's a really good unit.

Ariens 34" Walk Behind Mower
4 Star Review   By gcd12 on Home Depot - May 1, 2011

Only potential disappointment is that an incorrect belt was assembled (blade belt) during manufacture. This was detected and corrected in set up before delivery, but my concern is whether any other manufacturing mistakes may have been made that will surface in the future.

Ariens WAW 34 cuts anything - but won't win a race
4 Star Review   By Cincyburbs on Home Depot - May 1, 2011

I looked long and hard at smaller walk behinds, and chose the Ariens for the horsepower, key ignition and price combination. I've used this mower about 5 times on very dense and tall spring grass. My yard is .55 acres and it easily cut my mowing time by a third vs a 21" push mower. It cuts through anything without bogging down one bit; while the blade-tip speed is rated consistent with other residential mowers, it discharges the grass so powerfully, it never leaves clumps that requiring raking. It makes a nice commercial looking striping to the yard. It appears to be decent on gas consumption. It starts very easily and seems to be built very well. It's heavy, and is a bit of a chore to maneuver turns especially on slopes. The forward and reverse on-the-fly is a nice feature, but it doesn't seem to have variable speeds; more like a first and fifth gear. I thought with all that horsepower it could go faster. The reverse is more like reverse-assist.
