Ariens Compact 24
4.5 Star Review  productwiki.com - Sep 23, 2011

The Ariens Compact 24 is a mid-cost snowblower with a clearing width of 24". The Briggs and Stratton 205cc OHV 900 Series engine offers six forward speeds and two reverse speeds. The snow chute of the Compact 24 can throw snow up to forty feet, and the 205º Quick Turn chute control allows you to choose the direction in which you launch it. The 13" x 4” Directional snow tread tires of this snowblower are designed to perform in slippery conditions. This snowblower differs from the lower cost Compact 22 in that it has a more powerful engine, a 24" clearing width, and a more compact 17.5" housing height (as opposed to the Compact 22s 20" housing height). However, it lacks the higher cost Compact 26s 26" clearing width more powerful Briggs and Stratton 249cc OHV 1150 Series engine, and slightly larger 13" x 5" directional snow tread tires. The Ariens ... PROS: (1) Requires considerably less physical strain than manual and shovel-style counterparts - ideal for older users (may prevent heart attack or other serious injury) (2) Excellent option for users with limited storage space - many larger blowers are too large to store in an average suburban home (3) Works very well in snow-heavy locations - maintains smooth, reliable operation even in deep, rough banks (4) Knobbed tires are firm and well-balanced - provides safe, consistent tracking across slippery and uneven terrain (5) Electric starter mechanism is remarkably better than standard rope-style systems - starts within 1 or 2 presses every time ... CONS: (1) Unit is very loud - small muffler produces piercing engine and rattling noises, making earplugs or headphones necessary for extensive use

5 Star Review   By Kemba on Home Depot - Mar 7, 2013

Put this thing to the test day after I bought it. 20+ inches was not going to stop this baby, it never even clogged up, and it was a very wet and heavy snow. Never owned an Ariens machine of any type before, but am very impressed with the quality and sturdiness of this machine. Was going to hold off till next year to buy one but needed one and my local Home Depot had this one on display, and it looked so much better than the other models on display. Not the least bit sore, was a life saver for my back. Price was great for what you are getting. No regrets, look forward to play time when it snows now.

4 Star Review   By SteepDrive on Home Depot - Feb 28, 2013

Overall a good machine. Easy to start runs well in all weather conditions. Good fuel storage, don't have to fill every time I use. Turning is a little tricky. I left the wheel pins in because I have a steep driveway. The lower gears may be too slow forward use but are ideal for going down the driveway. Only problem I had was one of the hitch pins vibrated out of the drive control handle assembly the first time I used the machine. It was a little tricky finding an exact replacement.

Constant issues with friction discs. Older models were a little better, newer models have significant issues with these drive discs. Better (more expensive) throwers on the market are available, however once the newer Areins breaks down on you (multiple times), you'll wish you spent that extra money!

New Ariens 920014 24" Snow Blower
4 Star Review   By deitripper on Home Depot - Feb 27, 2013

I bought this snow blower on February 25, 2013 which was 2 days ago. The first night I spent some time assembling. Out of the box you have to bolt the upper part of the handle bars, attach the discharge chute, connect the cable which rotates the chute, and tighten the nuts on the linkage lock. This last bit is not in the instructions and if you are not really a mechanical tinkerer you may miss this. There is a nice video on YouTube which goes through all this and is quite helpful. I went through the various checks as outlined in the book and waited for snow. Two days later we had about 4 inches of heavy wet snow. I fired it up and let it run with the auger engaged for a bit as recommended and proceeded to blow snow. It did a good job but at the downhill end of the driveway I couldn't get it to turn and come back up. One wheel was spinning. I remembered reading you could lock both wheels which I did and that solved the problem. Overall I really like the Ariens; solid with all metal chute, Briggs and Stratton engine, good warranty and a decent price. This is my first two-stage blower. Glad I got it rather than another dinky single stage.

A workhorse - terrific two stage snowblower with excellent features
5 Star Review   By Dick on Home Depot - Feb 22, 2013

2/22/13 This morning made a 9" snowfall with some drifting and a curb full of piled up plowed snow at the end of the driveway, a breeze. Engine more than enough power; controls with multiple forward and a couple of reverse speeds on the self-propelled. Made clearing snow effortless. This machine took the snow on and blew it away. Took me 1/3rd the amount of time to do my driveway. Very solid, well engineered and well conceived snowblower by Airens. I thought about getting a bigger unit, that all went by the wayside after using the airens 24" compact 2 stage with electric start. Highly recommend this machine, outstanding quality for the money.

The 24" cut makes short work of removing snow. Love the electric start. The small wheels easily get stuck in deep and heavy snow.

Storm Nemo
5 Star Review   By hadenufsno on Home Depot - Feb 18, 2013

Bought this machine last fall. It came fully assembled with oil in it. Gave if a complete inspection after getting it home, and found no deficiencies. Used it a few times in light storms of 3"-8" without any problems. Engine starts on the first pull every time and starts better cold than hot. The electric start motor spins the engine over easily, but I really don't use it much. It has a smooth idle with a top end RPM adequate for moving alot of snow. And this thing WILL send it. Obviously a 20" machine was not designed for a 33" storm (that's where it wasn't drifted) but if you take your time and the snow isn't super wet/heavy it will get the job done.I would recommend locking the 2nd wheel to add traction on inclines. Single wheel drive should be adequate for most level use. With a little time and practice the machine is fairly easy to handle relatively speaking. I am not sorry I bought this. Hope this helps someone make a decision.

An excellent snowblower for home owners with medium to large driveways.
5 Star Review   By shaggybaj on Home Depot - Feb 16, 2013

I have owned my Ariens 24 inch snowthrower for three months. We have yet to get a really large snowstorm but have had a number of instances of 2 to 5 inch snow. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the machine worked. It starts on the first pull and I have yet to even try the electric start even in some pretty cold weather. Users should make the effort to get nonoxygenated gas and stabilizer. This was emphasized by the sales clerk and was a very good tip. The machine is very well made and is easy to operate. It throws the snow a good distance making it useful for even relative large driveways. Given its performance in 4 to 5 inch snows, I am very confident that this machine will do pretty well in snow at least double that amount. I find the size about ideal for home use. I am very happy with my purchase.

Terrific snow blower! Handled the Blizzard of '13 easily
5 Star Review   By MrSnow on Home Depot - Feb 11, 2013

Plenty of power, easy to start either electric or manual and excellent fuel economy. I cannot say enough about this compact blower that handled the Blizzard of '13 with snow over the top of the intake at 34" and just kept going. All that and made in America!

Not the BEAST everyone says
3 Star Review   By PopPop on Home Depot - Feb 11, 2013

I purchased this new "BEAST" in 2012, got to use it once last season and so far twice this season - all three times on snow no deeper than 3 inches. I was completely disappointed first of all because it didn't throw the snow more than around 15 feet - couldn't clear my 35 foot wide driveway - and, when I got to the point that I had snow on snow or about 5 or 6 inches, this "BEAST" actually bogged down and I had to slow down a bit. Now, it does work better than my smaller Ariens that is third hand and about 35 years old but, for a brand new "BEAST" with well over twice the HP this just didn't do it for me. From the reviews I'm glad that the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania wasn't hit by any of the big storms producing feet in snow instead of inches like we got. I'm not sure getting something larger will do much better and perhaps the snow just wasn't thick enough for this "BEAST" to show it's claws but so far, my "BEAST" is a "BUST"!!!!!!!!!!

A below average snowblower but a great workout!
1 Star Review   By Thomas on Home Depot - Feb 9, 2013

Bought this unit as an upgrade to an older snowblower. I wanted a new unit to deal with the slight incline in our driveway. Unfortunately the purchase was a mistake. The wheel cannot power up even the slightest incline, the drive wheel just spins, so each time back up the driveway I had to push the full weight of the snowblower. I had a great workout but a lousy snow clearing experience. Very disappointed with Home Depot and Ariens for how this product is marketed compared to how it really works.

Returned the second one.
1 Star Review   By Lonewolfz28 on Home Depot - Feb 9, 2013

I would have edited my original review, but I can't find an option for that. So, here's a review on the machine that replaced my original machine. It worked well enough for about 2 hours and then sat in the garage for a couple weeks awaiting the next storm. We got 12" of snow yesterday so I pulled out the 2nd new machine. Started on first pull, engaged drive and got about 10' and it started bucking like crazy. Well, I've been down this road before so I dragged it back in and pulled the access cover. Sure enough, another friction disk with the rubber coating tearing completely off the metal wheel. Called the store and spoke to a very helpful Assistant Manager. He told me they had just gotten three more of them back from Ariens for repairing the same problem. According to him and the guys I turned it in to this morning, Ariens put out a safety recall on these for the bad friction disks. They think the got a bad lot of disks. I think their design is lacking. These disks were originally designed for use on the old rear engined riding lawn mowers in summertime temps. An online search for replacement disks will give you an idea of the wide range of mowers these were used on. They're now required to function at a much lower temperature range (rubber is more brittle at lower temps) than they were originally designed for. Also, to achieve the much slower speeds required for a snow blower vs a riding mower, they have to ride nearly at the center of the drive disk where there is much more of a twisting motion than there is out in the middle or outer edge of the disk where the higher speeds for the rider mowers are. It's no wonder they're having problems with the rubber getting twisted off of the wheel. Other makers have solved this problem by using a rubber wheel sandwiched between two metal plates. The plates keep the rubber from deforming or tearing like these friction disks are. Sure, that design probably adds to the cost, but it can't be any more expensive than shipping these back, replacing the discs and then shipping them back out and hoping they don't tear again before the warranty expires. I'm done with Ariens after this fiasco. I still love Home Depot though. Everyone at Home Depot that has dealt with me through this have been nothing but awesome. They get the other stars that Ariens would have gotten.

Great for someone with a bad back
4 Star Review   By upstateNewYorker on Home Depot - Feb 5, 2013

I debated over a one or two cycle machine and finally decided on a two cycle because of its ease of use in deep snow. The only drawback is that it is not worth using in snow depths less than 5 inches because you still have to shovel what the blower missed. This does not seem to be an issue with one stage machines but one stage machines aren't very good in deep snow. My neighbor has a one stage blower and he really struggled when we had 10 inches of snow in one storm. So it really depends on where you live and how many deep snow storms you get to rationalize the huge jump in cost. I live in upstate New York and average about 5 or 6 major snow storms per year that dump over 8 inches. With a bad back I never would have been able to use a one cycle machine on the major snow storms so for me it was the only way to go. But because we get so many snow storms here of less than 6 inches of snow I understand why one stage machines are so popular here. Another thing that I considered was its effectiveness of removing snow left by the snow plows after freezing. One stage machines can not break up large chunks of solid snow and ice where two stage machines have no problem breaking it up and throwing it over 10 feet away.

Stay away from this product
1 Star Review   By Orange2013 on Home Depot - Feb 2, 2013

Purchased in Jan 2012. No use in 2012 winter due to mild weather. Used 3x in 2013 winter. Wheels are too small for product; do not provide good traction in deep snow, especially going uphill and unit is heavy. Product died on 3rd use with half of driveway cleared in deep snow. Had a Toro which cost half the price and ran for 15 years. Returning this product due to poor quality.

Everything works fine. No storm big enough to tell how it will handle "real" snow. Throws it a long way. Tires work amazingly well with no chains.

Had to return first one.
3 Star Review   By Lonewolfz28 on Home Depot - Jan 30, 2013

The first one we bought had the rubber tear completely off the friction wheel driving the wheels after ~40 feet of use. All I can think of is they had a bad batch of wheels as the associate that checked it back in for us said it was the second one of the same model to be returned that day for the same exact problem. The replacement machine has worked fine for the two hours I've needed it so far. You do need to muscle the machine quite a bit more than I'm used to as our old machine had differential steering. I also miss being able to lock down one of the levers to free a hand for rotating the chute. But, you get what you pay for, right? It does throw the light snow we had about 35'. That gives me confidence that it will be able to handle the heavier snow just fine. Overall, it feels like a decent, low feature model that should last a few seasons at least. I'm just not looking forward to feeding it friction wheels if it was something more than just a bad lot of wheels.

5 Star Review   By logisticsman on Home Depot - Jan 29, 2013

Everything I expected from a snow blower this one delivers. I live in Upstate NY which we all know is known for snow, this compact blower has no problem cutting thru the drifts. Light weight and easy to handle, starting has been no problem, I havn't had the need to use the electric starter yet even in the coldest weather. This is my second Ariens snowblower and wouldn't buy any other brand.

5 Star Review   By mjfalend on Home Depot - Jan 15, 2013

I purchased this model because I knew someone who had one and he said it was worth every penny. I am extremely happy with the purchase, but the best part of this purchase was the ease at which we were able to get it shipped to us even after every store in the area was sold out after we received 20 inches of snow! It arrived assembled complete with gas and ready for us to pick up! Home Depot's service is amazing!

5 Star Review   By Oswego on Home Depot - Jan 15, 2013

Works efficiently, quickly and quietly. We got a snowstorm with a foot of snow, which was the reason for our purchase and this machine made it quick and easy to push the snow away and make a trail to our shed, which we would not have been able to do with shovels.

Home Depot delivered it all set up, with gas, in just a few days after I placed the order. Free delivery. Had a snow fall two days later. Did my 50 foot driveway fast. Threw the snow farther than previous machines I've had. Nice compact design. Not bulky like previous other brands. Very happy with the service and the product.

4 Star Review   By Toolman on Home Depot - Jan 4, 2013

I have only used it once so far, unit works good, doesn't quite have the oomph that my prior unit (w/ 8hp tecum)of 16 years had. My only real complaint is that the headlight does not have an on-off switch, the light is not needed during daylight hours. main reason for buying it is that the unit and engine are american made, helping my own economy, reputation of the brand.

Finally Had some Snow- Went thru it like "BUTTA"
5 Star Review   By JayL on Home Depot - Jan 2, 2013

Couldn't wait to try this blower and finally had about 5 " of snow. What used to take me 1-2 hours to shovel was all done in 25 minutes without the back pain! Started and blew the snow exactly as advertised! The compact size fit nicely in a small space in my garage ready for the next storm. White Glove delivery was fantastic!

Great snow blower for the money
4 Star Review   By Irony58 on Home Depot - Jan 2, 2013

The Ariens Compact 24-in just got a good test run the past few days clearing out about 12" of snow that had several days to pack down. It went through the lighter sections without noticing. When hitting the more dense snow the engine slowed a bit, but never really bogged down or came close to stalling. Even going through the plow banks, it never stalled. But I had to take it real slowly through there. And through all the snow it shot it all out at least 30 feet. The light weight is both good and bad. It makes it very easy to maneuver. Most of the time I didn't use the reverse gear and just pulled it back. Quicker that way. It also makes it easier to get in and out of a shed. But I think traction suffers due to the lightness. The small wheels don't help, either. But I like that I can lock both wheels for best traction. Because it's light, locking the wheels didn't make for difficult turning. This replaced my 40+ year-old Ariens which finally gave up. I like the new controls for everything right up front. I can change throwing angle (real useful with my complicated driveway). And having the auger/impeller clutch on the handle is great.

overall a good machine
4 Star Review   By pedro on Home Depot - Jan 2, 2013

used a few times this winter and the machine seems decent. Like the size of the compact unit and it seems to throw snow a lot further then my older ariens unit. Sould have looked a little closer at the deluxe model for the larger cc engine.

Great blower and product
5 Star Review   By HD08 on Home Depot - Dec 26, 2012

Very good blower. Just recently used it for a storm that dumped 12 inches of snow. The snow was wet and heavy, which the blower had no issues going thru. No clogging.

pretty good machine, but not perfect
4 Star Review   By Anon12345 on Home Depot - Dec 24, 2012

just tried my blower for the first time after a major snow storm of +15" snowfall. the blower seem a bit underpowered compared to my old Brute (Briggs's house brand) blower that i gave to my parents. it was having a bit of a hard time going through heavy snow, where the engine would start to bog if it hit a deep drift and it seemed like it was having traction problems, or perhaps the level of snowfall was just too much for this unit to handle. i also thought the light could be better designed, where the reflector had a open top so a lot of the light shot upwards instead of being reflected forward. it's probably ideal for lighter snow of less than 15". the setup could have also been better. the unit was consigned to a local dealer, which didn't make any of the necessary adjustments require during assembly. the auger cable was slack, resulting in the drive belt squealing&slipping and a lot of unnecessary wear on the belt. the speed selector shaft was not adjusted so the reverse barely worked and lowest forward speed was too fast. i felt these thing should have been taken care of during assembly since most customers would assume that if the dealer was delivering an assembled unit, it should be in "ready to use" state. i guess i should have known better and checked the unit before use. overall the blower gets a passing grade, it got the job done, and the unit seems well built.

Solid piece of equipment
4 Star Review   By EliteDigger on Home Depot - Dec 20, 2012

Bought this late last night in anticipation of a major winter storm and realizing that my current little snowblower wasn't going to be able to handle what was coming... Got it pretty much straight off the truck, still in the box, as Home Depot was closing. Set up really isn't difficult but it was made that way as there was no manuals included in my box. A quick call to Home Depot and they set aside some manuals for me and walked me through the set-up process. This thing got a baptism by fire as we got over 18" of wet heavy snow dropped on us in the past 24 hours. Started right up on the first pull and off I went. Had to put it on the slowest speed and shave off about half the width of the blower on each pass (I don't think any snowblower this size is going to get through a full width of 18" of heavy wet snow so it's not really a negative for me...), but it got through it like a champ. Ran flawlessly for almost 2 hours. Had to fire it up again almost 4 hours later to do some more. Took two pulls the second time but still fired up easily and worked flawlessly. This is my first two-stage but it was easy to use, pretty easy to maneuver and worked great. Time will tell but I'm very happy with my purchase so far.

Used for 1st time today,2-3 in. fairley wet snow.Hard to control without having wheels locked together.Pushed snow ahead of itself.Idiotic safety featues(levers need hand off to stop motion, then it pops up all the way).I miss my old Ariens(1970's).I should have bought the delux 24.

This thing is a beast!
5 Star Review   By JoshT on Home Depot - Dec 11, 2012

We got 14" of snow yesterday and my beloved Honda Sno-Pup just couldn't take it anymore. I purchased this from Home Depot for $799 and couldn't be happier. Took about an hour to assemble from the crate, mostly because the pin for turning the chute wouldn't go through all the way. Very simple setup. Added gas, checked the oil. Prime twice, choke on, slide throttle all the way to the left, turn on key and one pull out of the crate and she was running like a champ. I went through 20" tall drifts with ease and that end-of-driveway mess the snowman left me, no match for this thing! I did the neighbors driveways, the mailbox commons, two full sidewalks and was looking for more to plow. I am totally impressed with this thing. The 1 wheel drive is nice for steering but two wheels make it a lot easier. Just set the speed and walk behind. it does all the work, unlike my old sno-pup. I highly recommend this snow-thrower. My neighbor even commented how she could hear me giggling as I was moving snow. That's a ringing endorsement if I ever heard one. Feature-wise, the crank is great for adjusting snow direction, the chute controls work perfect. Speed is easy to control and it isn't overly heavy to maneuver.

A Great Value
4 Star Review   By Dale on Home Depot - Dec 11, 2012

I just gave my New Ariens a work out. 13 inches of wet snow. Never clogged and blew the snow a good distance. One suggestion would be a slower 1st speed setting. Moves a little too fast in real deep heavy snow. Very happy with my purchase. It is so easy to start the Briggs engine I doubt I will ever need to use the electric start.

very good not great
4 Star Review   By incautious on Home Depot - Nov 28, 2012

Purchased this to replace my 40year old ariens which still runs great. I scoffed at these snow blowers when they first appeared, because they looked so cheap next to my old ariens. However this unit is so much lighter than my old unit which is a big bonus as I get older. Somethings I don't like about this unit, auger is now belt driven which can slip as the belt ages, also since there are now two belts to change, the procedure to change them is way more complicated. The chute is smaller which may clog easier. Also they should really call this 2 speed as speeds 1 thru 4 are useless. But over all seems well built and tackles heavy snow well

Bad engine
1 Star Review   By 214snow on Home Depot - Nov 27, 2012

Very hard to start. It does not fire up using the primer and choke as recommended. I end up eventually flooding it. I end up taking the plastic shrouding off so I can get at the spark plug to dry it out. Once I do get it running, it does OK, not real smooth, but OK. Be aware though that you have to back off on the throttle very slowly or it will backfire loudly and that burns the valves. This has to be one of the worst engines built.

Great product, gets the job done, solid build
5 Star Review   By HuckleCat on Home Depot - Nov 13, 2012

I have only put this snowblower through limited paces since purchasing it, but so far I can say that it is easy to start and use. I removed the drive pin from one of the wheels (a simple three-second process) to make it easier to turn. Leaving both drive pins in makes it a bit of a workout to turn around at the end of the driveway or sidewalk. With one pin removed using its handy pull ring, I now can spin the machine around in place to my heart's content. For all I know, most snowblowers of this size are exactly the same in this regard. The chute is easy to adjust in use and the controls are all easy to reach. Looking at several models, the Ariens products have notably more solid looking components and materials in key places. That gives me a good deal of confidence that my purchase will last longer than certain other brands might. Really, I have yet to find anything at all to complain about. Very happy overall.

So far so good
4 Star Review   By Richard on Home Depot - Nov 8, 2012

Had first snow. Machine did ok. Saved a lot of backbreaking shoveling. For deep snow use low gear, take your time, it eats it up. Mid size machine but does the job. How "long it lasts" without something breaking is the true test.

Recalled engine 2nd day.
2 Star Review   By ConcernedCustomer on Home Depot - Oct 5, 2012

Guess we'll see how this goes. Shipped to my home yesterday. I assembled which went OK and unit seemed fine. Bought this for the Briggs & Stratton engine because the Tecumseh in my 6 year old Sears Craftsman blew up and neither replacement engine nor repair parts are available since Tecumseh went out of business. Figured I could not go wrong with a B&S. To my surprise, today Ariens support calls and leaves a message that they have arranged for a repair shop 100 miles away to come pick up my new snow blower to repair. They did not leave a call back name or number, just a fax # for the repair shop although I found contact info online. This is a new recall, not the B&S recall from years back re: the primer bulb. The repair shop is not sure yet but thinks it is a cross threaded bolt in the carburetor. Guess we'll see about that as well. Appears like they are trying to do the right thing but I am not a happy customer right now. Make sure to check the in-store supply if you buy one to be sure they are not impacted. The web site now shows the online machines are out of stock so this might be a problem for only a couple weeks of engines manufactured. I would be happier if they offered a different machine that will be guaranteed and I can trust fully and took this one away or gave a greatly extended warranty.

Solid machine
4 Star Review   By dipi on Home Depot - Sep 25, 2012

I have yet to try the snow blower, as I got it at the beginning of September. What I did was take it out of packaging, assembling the handles, the chute and try the engine. Ariens does not provide any tool for the assembly, but all in all it won't take more than an hour to have the machine up and running. The delivery was flawless and the guy carted the package inside my garage.

Good but not Excellent
4 Star Review   By lossy4 on Home Depot - Jun 19, 2012

Bought this 2 winters ago and as soon as it arrived we got hit with 2 blizzards 18 in deep. 36 inches total. i used the blower on both snow falls and it worked. But i would say that anything over 12 inches is pushing it with this blower. lucky i'm young and healthy. and the snow blower is relatively light compared to other snow blowers. because with that much snow there was a lot of pushing and pulling to get the blower to mover through the deep snow. In the end though the blower did do the job but could have bin a little easier and less time consuming with a bigger and more powerful blower

Great Snow Blower Like the ones I have used since the 1960's
5 Star Review   By Jack on Home Depot - May 15, 2012

My father bought an Airens Snow thrower in the mid-1960's. It worked great for about 30 years in the snow belt of upstate NY. I bought my first one around 1976 and loved it. I bought the new one in September of 2011. We did not have much snow in upstate NY last winter, but it worked fine for a few small snow falls. Based on the history of these machines and the way my new one works I am expecting it to be a great machine as well.

Great value for the money. Cleared 3' of snow off two driveways with no problem. Sends the snow about 30' with no problem. Electronic start is great. No battery that would be dead from sitting in garage. Simply plug in 110 volt standard extension cord and it fires right up.

For the price this is a quality purchase
5 Star Review   By Chuck on Home Depot - Mar 6, 2012

For little more than the price of a single stage Craftsman or Troy Built snow blower I was able to purchase this Ariens 24 inch two stage snow blower. While it is on the lower end of the Arien line it's features and quality FAR exceed that of the competition. Example: metal shoot instead of flimsy plastic. Every one I have talked to praises the Arien line and I have found virtually no negatives. Highly Recommend

Excellent Quality Snow Blower
5 Star Review   By HappyHomeowner07 on Home Depot - Mar 4, 2012

This product is of excellent materials. The chute and entire product except the control panel is all made out of steel. Easy to operate. The price is the same all around. Definitely worth the money. Used to take us 2 hours to shovel our driveway and now takes about 15 minutes to clear the driveway with the snow blower. Definitely recommend.

Terrific machine
5 Star Review   By Rick on Home Depot - Feb 29, 2012

We've now had a snow fall of suffiicient depth for me to write a review of this snow blower. Last weekend we had an 8" snow fall of that wet slushy snow the weather people call "heart attach" snow. I purchased this snow blower last October after fighting the above average snow fall we had the previous winter and listening to the weather forcasters predict another winter of heavy snows. I've used single stage snow blowers for almost 30 years and for the most part was satisified with their preformance but heavy snow falls have pleged the midwest for the past several years. I broke down and bought this Ariens after spending a month or more researching the various brands available. Am I glad I did, this little brute lived up to and exceeded my expectations, that 8" wet snow fall we had was nothing for this little beauty. Didn't clog once, my single stage would have clogged every 10' feet or so. I couldn't be happier. I'm so impressed, the quality of thiis machine is excepional, I know it'll last for years to come...

5 Star Review   By Tammy on Home Depot - Feb 28, 2012

When I purchased this item, I was advised it was delivered, however I didn't receive... I went online and discussed with my HD specialist whom informed me this would be delivered to a shop in my area to be assembled, tested, delivered and I'll be instructed in running the machine! Fantastic, being over 60, I was concerned if I would be able to run. The company made sure I was comfortable in running the machine and understood all aspects that would be important in maintaining the machine for a long life!

This product exceeded my expectations!
5 Star Review   By DoubleD on Home Depot - Jan 24, 2012

After reading the reviews on consumer reports, and seeing the high ratings this snow blower received, I was cautiously optimistic. However, after using it twice, when we got hit with two 8 in plus snow falls, this product cleared my drive in 18min. The same drive took me 90minutes to shovel. So much fun to use, with the extra time I cleared my neighbors drive also. Great product!

A great snowblower
5 Star Review   By snowmonkey on Home Depot - Jan 24, 2012

Snowblower arrived fully assembled and ready to run. Less than a week later we had 24" of snow. Blower handled the snow up to 10" great even the sloppy stuff but needed a little help with a shovel to get through the 4' snowplow berm. All steel construction chewed through frozen blocks Electric start was a dream come true. Wife used and liked it too. Only drawbacks are the head light design will blind you at night and the throttle knob fell off the first time I used it. Ignition key can fall out so I wired it on.

Great in Wet Snow!!!
5 Star Review   By Giani on Home Depot - Jan 23, 2012

I bought this back in September 2011. I trucked it home myself with a $20 rental and it was no problem. Assembly was fast and easy. I added gas and it started on the first pull, did not even need the electric start. I used in for 5 inches of very wet and slushy snow at the end of October and it went through with no problem. I just used it on another 5 inches of average type of snow and and it was throwing it with no problem. I have a double driveway that is about 65 feet long and about 125 feet of side walk. I also used it to blow snow from a large section of grass in the back yard for my small dog. It blazed through everything without a problem. I also have to comment on the adjustable chute. Not only is the turning side to side great, but the remote control for the top of the chute was wonderful!! It was kind of windy, so in some directions, I had to adjust the chute very low, so that the snow would not blow back in my face and other directions, adjust it high again; it was fast and easy!! This is the best snow blower I have ever had!! I highly recommend it!!!! FYI Be sure to engage the second wheel - once done, it will never slip!

Should have one bought years ago
5 Star Review   By Jack on Home Depot - Jan 22, 2012

This is an excellent machine. Well built, all metal and overall solid construction that far exceeds the other cheaper plastic laden models from other brands. Starts up easily in any temperature, and goes through snow and the plow build up at the end of the driveways with ease. What used to take hours now takes minutes, a pleasure to use. Based on reviews from people I know who have the Ariens brand, reliability is expected to be high. All who had Ariens last winter ('10-'11) during the blizzards had no problem, while other brands around broke frequently. Local contractor that delivered the blower assembled and fueled, showed us how to use it and also said this was the one to buy. Highly recommend purchasing this machine, you get what you pay for. The added cost over the time you'll have this isn't much when you consider it'll start, work and probably not break when you need it.

Arien's 24in Snowthrower with Briggs motor
5 Star Review   By Zooter on Home Depot - Jan 21, 2012

I love this machine, has to be one of the best purchases i have ever made. I finally got my chance to use my snow thrower today. It worked flawlessly we got 5 or 6 inches of heavy wet snow and i have to say it really threw the snow 25ft. all my neighbors have snow throwers, form MTD, Toro. just to name a few and they all stopped by my driveway to see what kind of machine i bought because they could see from their drives how far i was throwing snow. I was able to throw snow up over an 8ft privacy fence no problem. and it started really easy. with one pull. Go ahead and buy it you won't be sorry. and its all made in USA.

Great Product
5 Star Review   By NEOH on Home Depot - Jan 15, 2012

This is my first snow blower, although I have used one before. I live in NE Ohio, and we just got a large lake effect snowstorm, woke up to 24inches of snow. At the road, due to plowing, drifts were almost up to 3 ft of packed/icy snow. It handled it with no problem. The augers steadily cut into these heavy packed drifts, and the impeller easily threw the snow 20-30 ft. It is very simple to use, from what I've heard, a lot of other brands struggle with the chute mechanism. It is very easy to control the chute- even w/o stopping, and you can put the snow exactly where you want it. I find the ability to lock and/unlock the wheels to be very nice, so you have the power/control when you need it, and the extra maneuverability when you don't. It was about 10 degrees this morning- starts with 1 pull- I haven't even used the electric start yet. I've only used it a couple times, but since it handled 24 inches of snow- I have no doubt it will be able to easily handle all future storms.

Bought as a Christmas gift
5 Star Review   By krusher1957 on Home Depot - Nov 29, 2011

This particular machine has not been used yet, but if it's anything like the Ariens I bought six years ago it will be a fantastic machine. We bought this as a gift for our daughter and son in law based on my experience with my Ariens. That machine dug out my driveway as well as several neighbors multiple times during the winter of '10/'11. No mater how much snow and slush was on the ground it went through it like a hot knife in butter. I bought my Ariens based on my uncle's experience with his 30 year old machine.

4 Star Review   By steveinNJ on Home Depot - Nov 26, 2011

I purchased this unit after struggling with an old single stage blower, that quite frankly was in over its head. I have not put it to the test yet, but, from everything I have read about Ariens, I'm sure it will serve me well. Home Depot did a great job. The blower was fully assembled, thoroughly explained how to use, and loaded in my truck. I don't like snow, but, now I won't dread it.

Good choice for snowblowers
4 Star Review   By trekie86 on Home Depot - Nov 15, 2011

This snowblower has worked great so far. I have two complaints right now, firstly the light mounting instructions are vague and there is no good picture to define the mounting position, secondly the engine manual said fill the oil reservoir to "near overflowing", too bad it didn't give a volume because I spilled oil all over the driveway when I ran it the first time. Overall, the power is good and the controls are easy to operate. Don't waste your money on the started cord, any standard (3 prong) extension cord works.

Great product, looking forward to snow this year.
4 Star Review   By RegT on Home Depot - Nov 15, 2011

I ordered the 24 inch Ariens late in September. Took a little longer to get because they were going like hot cakes. I received in late October. Once I received it, they showed me how to use it. It came all assembled with a full tank of gas and oil. Great customer service. It looks very sturdy especially with the metal chute. I read other reviews and is seems everyone is happy with it. It was delivered by a local Ariens dealer in town, so I know if I ever have trouble with it, I know where to take it. I haven't been able to use it yet, but looking forward to the snow this year. I can only give it this rating since I haven't been able to use it yet, but I'm definitely happy with what I see.

Handled 3 inches of wet slushy snow and ice
5 Star Review   By jaques on Home Depot - Nov 7, 2011

This snowblower starts up very easily, and is simple to operate. It handled very well, the 3 inches of wets slushy snow and ice that fell on NJ on Oct. 29. Despite the heaviness of the wet snow and ice, the snowblower as able to through the snow at least 20 to 30 feet.

Impressive snow blower
4 Star Review   By John on Home Depot - Oct 30, 2011

This is a very impressive snowblower, although we have not had snow yet. The chute is all steel along with the rest of the body, however the chute rotation is a little difficult (may need some more grease so it moves more freely). I would give it 5 stars however mine came with a flat tire. I'm currently waiting for Ariens to send me a replacement.

WOW!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!
5 Star Review   By Johnny on Home Depot - Oct 21, 2011

I picked it up my self using a home depot truck. It was easy to unload and was almost fully assembled out of the box. It only took about 25 minutes to assemble. It had oil in it already and I just had to add gas. It started on the second pull and it sounded magnificent!! I did a lot or research and found this to be the least expensive snow blower with a Briggs and Stratton Engine. I can't wait for the first heavy snow fall here in Doylestown, PA!!

Awaiting Snow, and ready
4 Star Review   By Rick on Home Depot - Oct 4, 2011

Early for a product review, but I had an Ariens in the 80's and it was a beast up in snow country. This one seems a tad tamer, but should be fine. Nice and compact, plus the elec start and headlite are modern features.Purchase was easy, delivery was truly white glove.

Preliminary Review
5 Star Review   By Mimmosdad on Home Depot - Sep 27, 2011

Since I bought this at the end of Summer, I cannot give a full on review on how well it eats through the snow. However, just by getting accustomed to it as well as the company who delivered it to me, I can provide feedback. I was expecting a big box to be dropped off, but what I got was true white glove service, the snow thrower was put together professionally and tested. The gentleman wheeled it off the truck and gave me a demo. It is really easy to start, and use. I was wanting a Honda Snowthrower to complete my whole line of Honda equip, but couldn't not fathom the price point which was bout 3 x more than the Ariens. The gentleman assured what I bought was nothing less than one of the best. I was quite pleased to hear that. In playing around with it myself before putting it away to get use to it, I witnessed the same ease of use, maneuverability, and seemingly well done construction. I would have to write back later to give my full on opinion on actual snow removal capabilities. But from anyone I talked to so far one word came out, "animal." The other reason why I settled(picked) the Ariens was that it was made in the USA. Please be aware... that is line (orange) is made here, Ariens has a more cost efficient line which is their Snow-tek, which is made in China. Keep this in mind if you ever need service as I was told its easier to get the American parts.

Goodbye Snowthrower, Hello Snowblower!
4 Star Review   By hedken77 on Home Depot - Jul 30, 2011

This came before the snow last season fully assembled & ready to go. Many of my neighbors are retired, so after I clear a 120 ft driveway, sidewalk & back patio area, I also clear several others as well. No matter what I put it through, it does the job. All the gears, forward & reverse, locked axle or not, starting cold, electric or pull cord, plowed or slush snow, well, you get the idea. It was great being able to deposit snow exactly where I wanted it. And yes, it can throw the snow up to 40 ft away. Put it in 3rd gear & whistle while you work. The only thing I could find fault with was the headlight bracket wouldn't stay upright. So I shimmed it up with a washer. It even offered enertainment as the couple across the street got into a mild argrument, she won't let him buy one. Maintance work will be a breeze, it was designed with Harry Homeowner in mind.

still too early to tell
3 Star Review   By amanda on Home Depot - Jul 11, 2011

after reading the reviews on this site especially the part where the unit was delivered to a third party, assembled and dropped off with along with an operating overview, i choose this site. unfortunately that was not the case. Since it is July i have not had the opportunity to attempt the assembly. other than that the process was smooth. my rating will be updated as i begin to assemble and use the machine

Seems well designed
5 Star Review   By railfan on Home Depot - Jun 25, 2011

Just received it (in June!) so cannot rate performance, but it seems well designed, assembly directions were well done, and delivery service was careful. This unit was purchased because of favorable online reviews and two friends good experience with similar Ariens products. Engine started with first pull on rope, and electric start seemed to work very well

Airens does not back up their product!!!
1 Star Review   By jcooper on Home Depot - Jan 9, 2011

I bought an Airens snow blower because I was told they were better than the lower priced brands. They may be, but they do not back up their product! When I used it for the first time I hit a newspaper. The paper got wedged between the auger and housing allowing a sheer bold on one side brake. This is common and what is supposed to happen when you hit something to protect the unit. That is why snow blowers have these sheer bolts. In my case however the shaft that turns the auger cracked despite the fact the sheer bolts are there to prevent this kind of damage. I thought "no problem" since the product was under warranty. Well, Airens will not honor their warranty. Since the sheer bolts are there to protect a product in cases where the auger hits an object I think it is clear that this should be covered by Airens (especially on the first use). I would not recommend this brand. They are not worth the extra money since they do not back up their product. Buy a brand that backs up their product.

Ariens Compact 24 Model #920014
5 Star Review   By GinDon1 on Home Depot - Jan 5, 2011

Bought this blower online this summer from Homdepot. Unit was shipped to local dealer assembeled and delivered to my house for free with gas & oil and demo. Set the wheels pins for dual traction! Had our first storm of 2+Ft ate snow very well throwing it 30FT or so. Bogged down at times but never stalled. Starts right up when cold one or two pulls, did have gas leaking out of carb when turned off 4 drops or so. Called dealer he said some carbs had to be replaced on briggs engine that where leaking gas. Just have to shut gas valve off when done till I get this checked out, said he might have to replace carb. Thats why I bought this unit, 3 yrs parts & Labor, Ariens brand name, Briggs engine and knowledgeable service Reps. This is the real deal!!

Pile of metal
1 Star Review   By HDcustomer19460 on Home Depot - Jan 5, 2011

I received delivery of snowblower and put it in my garage for a month. Mid-december I pulled it out and read the manual from cover to cover (I've operated lawn mowers a lot, but not snow blowers). I paid for this model because I trusted the Briggs&Stratton name. Tried many times, couldn't get it to start. Re-read manual many times, no help. Electric start motor works fine, but gas engine never starts. I probably flooded the engine trying so many times. Now I have to figure out how to get it warranty services... I don't have an easy way to transport it anywhere. I bought this to save me time, not be a time sync. Maybe I should have saved the money and kept shoveling!

Hard to start
2 Star Review   By Shoveler on Home Depot - Jan 2, 2011

I've had this snowblower for just over a year. The first year, it worked ok, but I've had some problems with it. The mechanism that winds up the starting cord broke and had to be replaced. Then it wouldn't start, so the repair shop replaced the spark plug, changed the oil and checked it all out, but everything looked fine. It takes quite a few pulls before it finally starts. Yesterday, I noticed that the rubber button you push to prime the engine is cracked now, so I suppose I'll have to replace that next. It seems to start fine if it's been in a heated garage (repair shop), but takes at least 30 pulls to start in the cold outside air (my house). I'll know better next time.

First Snow blower in first snow
5 Star Review   By xcidcpl on Home Depot - Dec 29, 2010

After last year's 3-4 feet of snow, I bought this machine over the summer. Couldn't beat the free shipping and no interest for a year. The machine came by way of a local dealer who put it together and fired it up. 3 days ago, I got my chance to use it. About 8 inches of snow and it ate it right up. It was so easy to handle and operate and I was havcing so much fun, I did my entire cul de sac before the plow could come and mess everything up.

As Good as promised
4 Star Review   By Auroran on Home Depot - Dec 28, 2010

I just bought this product this year, needing more power to go thru the snow at the end of the driveway left behind by the snowplows and the wet snow, at times. I had an Ariens before, but was a paddle or 1 stage. I am very happy with what this snowblower has been able to accomplish. It starts on one pull everytime. I bought this on-line and a local dealer delivered it all put together with gas and oil in it as well. I am very satisfied with this product and would recommend this to a friend. I would also keep buying the Ariens brand.

Worked great - for four feet
2 Star Review   By ACRimkunas on Home Depot - Dec 27, 2010

Yup, that's two stars for each foot of driveway this snowblower cleared. Then it stopped. I only got it yesterday, so if it doesn't continue to eat belts, my opinion may change, but I figure an $800 snowblower should work when you get it home.
