10 Years Strong - Dunno about the bad reviews
5 Star Review   By TecoD on Home Depot - May 11, 2011

I had my Genie at my last home for over a decade - installed it myself in a few hours. I'm blown away by the bad reviews as my unit was operationally ROCK SOLID, quiet, and did it lift my wide garage door LIGHTNING fast! HOWEVER.... my garage door was fairly light weight contemporary steel panel with good QUALITY rails, rollers, coil springs, and mountings. Everything was pristine square/aligned and I lubbed everything twice yearly. All brackets were multi-point mounted so there was no chance of vibration. 10 years, no problems - no circuit board/rail/screw problems. Always received polite and helpful support when calling (learned that when power outages happened, the opener needs to be reset in a certain sequence as a safety feature). I have seen this unit work less idealy in a friend's garage, but his door was much heavier, rails weren't square or mounted securely (vibration like crazy). Mine was a champ and dependable.

Not good
1 Star Review   By shalakov on Home Depot - Apr 7, 2011

Worked for a year and a half. Recently got a problem - it fails to close the door. Sensor and force settings are OK. Biggest issue is it is intermittent failure. Customer service wants you to call when the unit is not working - hard to do as they don't work 24/7. Lifetime warranty means YOU will troubleshoot your unit under their directions AND YOU will PAY for shipping of replacement part. Too much fun for a quarter thousand dollars I paid. No more genie for me and people I know.

Lotsa Problems
1 Star Review   By OldSouthFloridaGuy on Home Depot - Mar 28, 2011

Admiittedly this unit got used a lot over the years that we had it but near the end it turned out to be just one thing after another including 3 circuit boards, safe-t-beam sensors, traveler, and one complet powerhead assembly. Calls to customer service were sometimes helpful, sometimes not but all required substantial wait times on the phone. When I exhausted the first line of customer service people and got to the next level they were much more helpful and detail oriented. Parts shipping was generally slow and at my expense except for one time. In the end the thing still wouldn't work (open all the way and close all they way without reversing) and I stopped throwing money at it and gave up on Genie.

Incredibly FAST and QUIET
5 Star Review   By cavecreeker13 on Home Depot - Feb 17, 2011

I had a Lift Master for 11 years, and the remote was not responsive. After clicking the button 30 times it FINALLY opened. Enough of that! I went to the Genie. Let me tell you....the majority of the garage door repair shops tried to stop my from buying this. I have a feeling they are in cahoots with Lift Master. I found they were bought out by Chamberlain. Well, this was installed, and it is SUPER quiet and SUPER fast going up. Normal speed going down, but that is for safety reasons by design. I am VERY VERY happy with this. The man installed NYLON rollers (5 on each side)...and I highly recommend you do that. This door goes up, and it's like a stealth garage door! WOW! Don't listen to the repair folks......they must like repairing Lift Masters. I am very satisfied with this unit, and time will tell how it wears. I hope it lasts as long or longer than the Lift Master.

Do not buy GEnie
1 Star Review   By DonotbuyGEnie on Home Depot - Feb 12, 2011

I have had five garage door openers - I only have issues with the Genie models. The remote keypad battery life is terrible. The remote keypad battery will drain a full battery in about an hour if left open. The shaft drive sticks requiring periodic greasing - this causes getting grease splattered all over the garage every time you need to grease this thing. The only thing controlling the motor are external limit switches that are prone to breakage. There are much better choices out available. Do not buy GEnie

Home Owner DIY
5 Star Review   By jerrieric on Home Depot - Feb 12, 2011

Had Craftsmans openers for 27 years. Never did any maintenance so they both died within 1 week of each other. Tried to install new drive kit and could not get them to work. Of course, I have no patience according to my significant other. Went to Home Depot and bought 2 of these. Took 3 hours each to install. I am more than satisfied. Doors open faster. Curious to see if they last 27 years. I am 62 so I probably will not be around to see.

Highly Recommend - very good product support
5 Star Review   By 1RB1 on Home Depot - Jan 3, 2011

I installed this a couple years ago - and it has worked fine. Recently the garage door inadvertently locked and when I tried to open it, the unit started and then stopped. I tried again and this time the unit continued to try to open and eventually shut down. The track had been torqued pretty good. After unlocking the door, I called Genie customer support and they walked me through resetting the unit, troubleshooting and even pinpointing a location on the track I needed to correct. Saved me a replacement project. I will buy from Genie for my next door opener.

Great opener!
5 Star Review   By Mattxr2i on Home Depot - Dec 10, 2010

I bought this garage door opener yesterday and installed it myself today. There was a bit of a hitch in the installation in that there were a couple things missing from the box. Namely the instruction poster and the safety beam moduals. (But Home Depot was very good and quick to fix that!) Once I got the missing parts, I finished the instal. (I had already put the opener up when I finally figured out I was missing stuff lol) The install took me about 6 hours (including the time to go and get the missing parts) and was very streight forward. If you are a DIY type person and fairly handy with common tools, this is an easy install. Once I got everything set up, I went ahead and tried it out. It worked flawlessly! This thing is FAST! It opens my garage door probably 3 times faster than the 30 some year old unit it replaced! And it is WAY quieter. So far I really like this opener. I hope it lasts!

A GREAT garage door opener!
5 Star Review   By TwinCitiesDweller on Home Depot - Nov 29, 2010

I made a desparation purchase of a new garage door opener last week when my 18 year-old opener surrendered to old age. After comparing specs, I selected the Genie Excelerator. I am really happy with this selection! Most notable is the speed. Notice this model is the "Excelerator"? They named it well. This opener opens a garage door in about half the time as other openers. I heat my garage (it gets pretty cold here in Minnesota), and this opener is quick--really quick. So my garage is open for less time, and I dump less heat into the neighborhood. And because it goes up so quickly, it offers a more difficult target for my 16 year old daughter to hit with her car. Installation was easy. I'd estimate about 2 hours total time The included accessories are really nice. Operation is very quiet. I grew up with a different brand opener in my family's garage. And I've put that other brand in each house I've owned. This is my first Genie. And I'll never switch back. And for those who remember the 70's. "Get a Genie automatic garage door picker-upper".

5 Star Review   By okiesoonerfan on Home Depot - Oct 30, 2010

I have had one of these for probably 6 or seven years, so when my older genie chain drive (about 12 years old) failed for the second time, I decided to install another Excelerator. My original unit has been completely trouble free, and the double speed opening is great. As far as I know you can't find anything else out there with a lifetime on site warranty. The new unit was easy to install, although the instructions are poor in my opinion. I have a room over the garage, so quiet operation was important. I considered a belt drive, but they do not compare in terms of warranty, or opening speed, so I stuck with old faithful. In really love the new style of the wall unit, and remote keypad. I am buying a new wall unit for my old opener so the two will match. I also like the new compact remotes a lot better than the older units. I see a lot of other comments about the unit falling apart after a year, but that has certinally not been my experience. I would love to know if those folks have the same problems with their new openers due to some sort of problem with their door installation. Buy it, you won't be sorry.

Disappointed
1 Star Review   By RRRRO on Home Depot - Sep 22, 2010

I've had this opener for 7 years now and can't wait to replace it for one that actually works. Within the first year the circuit board fried but was replaced under warranty. The board recently fried again so I'll be replacing the unit. I don't mind a board frying every now and again but operation of the unit was nerve-racking. The trolley on the screw drive would jamb in random positions when opening which would suddenly stop the door and shake everything. The only way to get it open after it would jamb would be to quickly press the button back and forth from open to close until it opened fully, or simply open it manually. I re-lubed the track but this didn't help. As a side note I had another Genie on the smaller door of the garage and it blew in the first year. Never again will I buy a Genie product.

New Garage Door
5 Star Review   By 17yearremoteuser on Home Depot - Sep 8, 2010

Well one of our motors finally bit the dust so we decided to just replace the whole unit. Really wise decision as they are really improved over the "old" genie that I was already in love with. This is a great opener and descent price. Free shipping if you add some other stuff to your order which is pretty easy to do. What does Home Depot not have...come on...gift cards from HD make great bday presents.

In two years you will be disappointed, do not buy
1 Star Review   By Dainbramaged on Home Depot - Sep 6, 2010

For the first year you will be pleased with this unit. Then strange things will start to happen in the second year. They will be small things, slow opening speed (one minute to open), fast closing speed, stopping at mid travel,... Weird unexplainable things. You will think that the opening and closing force will need adjustment or a sensor is out of alignment. None of these will fix the problem. Then one day (I was lucky to look up) your garage door will not fully open and if you have a tall vehicle you will collide with your partially open door. It will be a few inches shy of a full open, but enough to catch a roof rack or tall vehicle. This short stop happened on many occasions, as I said luckily I learned to look up before backing out to see if the door was fully opened. DO NOT buy this product, in two years you will be replacing it. Do a little research, the Genie Excelerator quickly turns in to a piece of junk and the only thing you will be watching is more of your money quickly accelerating out of your wallet.

Quiet and Dependable
5 Star Review   By GenieOwner on Home Depot - Jul 30, 2010

I bought the Genie Powerlift Excelerator 10 years ago when I built my house and had Home Depot perform the installation. It has been running for 10 years without a hiccup and the original remotes and wireless keypad still function like new. We are now building a new home and installing another one of these was an easy decision. The lifetime in home warranty is added piece of mind. It is very quiet compared to any other garage door opener I have seen. I highly recommend this product.

Repeat buyer - Excellent Product
5 Star Review   By SlyS on Home Depot - Jul 11, 2010

I owned an earlier version of this opener at a previous home, and never had an ounce of trouble in four years! Naturally, when I needed to install two openers in a new house, I purchased this again. The install is a bit time-consuming...particularly with a finished garage (no opener come w/ everything needed to install in a finished garage). Also, the calibration process for the safety features contributes to the time required. It took me about 4 hrs/opener to do by myself. The assembly/install isn't complicated, and the step-by-step instructions are good. The only complaint I have is that the instructions are broken into modules, and there aren't any clear guides as to which module to do first/next. The end result though is an excellent opener that opens extremely quickly (no sitting in the driveway for the door to open), and is very easy to program remotes or vehicle Homelink systems for. Also, this comes with the remote keypad for external entry. Highly recommend!

Genie Powerlift Excelerator Screw Drive Garage Doo
5 Star Review   By Izey on Home Depot - Jul 10, 2010

I just replaced my old Genie (28 years of service) with the new excelerator model, and did the compleat installation myself with the easy to follow instructions. I have to say Genie has come a long way since I installed my first unit 28 years ago, the new one is wonderful, fast, quite, and overall the perfect addition to my home's garage. I would not have any other brand in my garage, for rellabilty and performance Genie is second to none.

" Best thing I ever bought ! "
5 Star Review   By cactusart on Home Depot - Jul 3, 2010

I just bought 2 of the Genie powerlift excelerator garage door openers and you know the saying," Best thing I ever bought ! ". Well it's true. These things are great. It took my nephew & myself about 4 hours to install each one & that included taking down an old stanley & a broken chamberlin. The Genie Excelerator is so quite & smooth that all you hear is the door itself. And when you open the door it flies open with a soft stop. It closes at a normal speed with a soft stop. It's soooo nice now to pull into the drive, push a button and just pull into the garage without waiting for the door to open. Also the range of the remote is alot futher than the old openers. If you are on the fence about this one don't wait, get it now. You won't be sorry. As you can tell, I highly recommend the Genie Excelerator !

Great opener, targeted for DIY
5 Star Review   By SoonerDave on Home Depot - Jun 21, 2010

Anyone looking for a new garage door opener, particularly one with a do-it-yourself predisposition, would do well to consider this superb offering from Genie. The Genie Excelerator Screw-drive system differs from conventional belt- or chain-driven systems. This unit offers a nearly-silent DC-powered motor that controls a long threaded shaft (the screw), coupled with a captive carriage device connected to the garage door. The motor then controls the direction of door travel merely by controlling the rotation of the shaft. Door open and close limits are controlled via a simple yet elegant magnetic stop that rides along the main opener rail, and allows for adjustment merely by loosening a set screw and sliding the stop as needed. Genie clearly intends for this unit to be installed by a do-it-yourself type, although installation services are available. The unit is packaged with a large "blow-up" diagram of installation steps, accompanied by phenomenally detailed instructions. Assembly parts are packaged into distinctly colored plastic bags, with the instructions clearly defining when each bag is intended at which steps. Each bag also includes a part inventory printed on the bag's exterior. The do-it-yourselfer is advised to read through the installation steps once before actually performing the install. This is because some slight omissions in the instructions could be misinterpreted, causing a retrace in assembly steps. Additionally, installation of a garage door opener is typically not a do it *by* yourself endeavor; an extra pair of hands will be virtually unavoidable to assist in lifting the door to its final mounting position once it is affixed to its forward mounting bracket. It is vital to point out that the proper stud-mounted bracing be established in order to ensure a stable, shake-free operating environment for this (or any other) opener. A DIY-type contemplating this install should have a good cordless drill with a Phillips head attachment as well as a variety of hex-head drivers; a Phillips-head screwdriver, a tape measure, and wire strippers for cutting and attaching cabling from the obstruction sensors and wall switch to the power head. A six-position screw terminal block on the powerhead is convenient, but problematic in that the screw terminals themselves are very small. A block of spring-contact terminals would be a nice touch. Installation amounts to four critical steps: assembling the rails and attaching them to the power head; identifying the location of wall and ceiling mounting brackets; mounting the unit to the brackets, and installation of the obstruction sensors and wall control. A do-it-yourselfer should allocate a minimum of four hours for such an installation project, starting early when rested and fresh. A late afternoon start, particularly on a hot day, will lead to multiple breaks and an extended installation effort. If angle brackets must be installed to support the power head, additional time may be necessary. My installation was nonstandard in that I was able to re-use existing mounting brackets and wiring from the discarded opener this unit replaced. A slight difference in sensor and wall-control wiring between the old and new units did lead to a very subtle wiring error that took about an hour to track down and correct. The Genie unit is well protected against incorrect installation. On on-board diagnostic unit enters a self-test mode upon each power-up sequence; any detected issues are translated to a series of diagnostic "blink codes" displayed by a small LED in the back of the unit. The blink sequence is readily translated to a diagnostic table in the owner's manual for resolution. With the unit mounted and secured, the last step was to adjust the opener's close and open force, controlled by two small dials on the back edge of the opener unit. Out of the box, the unit is designed to provide only minimal up and down force; turn each dial only slightly in increments until the proper force settings are established. The on-board controller limits setup close speed until it determines that a proper force level has been been established. Upon completion, open speed is approximately twice that of close speed. This unit is compatible with HomeLink in-vehicle controllers, and can store up to seven different opener codes across all remote device types, including keypads, handheld remotes, and vehicle-based openers. This is a fine garage door opener system, with its screw-drive technology my personal preference over either belt- or chain-driven alternatives. My experience with installing the unit easily allows me to encourage any similar do-it-yourselfers to give strong consideration to this Genie unit.

for me this was a no brainer for the price of this item. the best door i have had. this opener has no problem raising and lowering my heavy duty hurricane proof garage door theres very little to no maintanance at all. I am not the handyman type so i had home depot to come out and install the opener they were out and gone within 45 minutes so to me it was well worth paying them to install it. if and when i have to replace my other type of garage door opener in wi am going to have this 1 installed up there

The product has only been in for a week, so it's too early to rate as the last two openers I purchased from Home Depot broke down; the last one in less than 2 years. The track can't handle the load of a 13ft wide wooden door and the gears get mangled. I bought the more expensive model this time in hopes of greater success. I was quite disappointed that I was unable to purchase just a track.

Two Thumbs Up - Genie Powerlift Excelerator Opener
5 Star Review   By FirePro on Home Depot - Feb 15, 2010

My brother-in-law and I each bought one of these during the 2008-2009 holidays. I have no idea why, but Home Depot was clearancing them at the time. He got his for $130 and I got mine for $105 with a coupon. That said, I believe this is worth the normal MSRP price. This is the second purchase/installation I have done, and the third door opener model that I have owned over 30 years. The Excelerator is extremely quick and quiet, and at the same time, with the electric eye, is extremely safe. The electric eye/safety feature was one of the reasons I replaced my working, but very old Genie Screwdrive opener. Several times my friendly, but less than bright cat has broken the beam on the new opener, and the door immediately reversed, just as it should. I am sure it would work equally well on small children. The excelerator is rather amazing to watch the first time after it "calibrates", as it is very fast on the upward motion. Downward travel is normal speed (for safety). With two very small remotes, an exterior door mounted keypad, a feature that matches the built-in transmitter in our min-van to the opener, and all the hardware you need, I would definitely recommend this to a friend, and will buy another one should I move to a new house. After a little more than a year, both mine and my Brother-in-law's are still working perfectly. A definite 5-star device.

Own two of these openers.
5 Star Review   By mulch on Home Depot - Feb 7, 2010

One opener is several years old and has performed well. Easy to install, quiet, great safety features especially if kids, pets around. Also, keeps from damaging car accidently. Lifetime guarantee on major parts. Just bought my second one as replacement for second door. A big difference in safety features, noise and fast operation compared other brand.

Love It!
5 Star Review   By tpahandyman on Home Depot - Jan 18, 2010

I replaced my failing existing Genie with this one. I've got to say, this thing flies open! It's surprising. And surprising how convenient those extra seconds seem to be. On top of that, it's super quiet. You can't hear it in the house when it's used. Siince I was replacing an old unit, it was very easy to fit in. The mount for the motor is farther away from the door than the old one. I had to move the ceiling mount back to accommodate that. Otherwise, the change was pretty easy. I still enjoy this purchase every day. Thumbs up!

Great Garage Door Opener
5 Star Review   By CharlesHomeowner on Home Depot - Dec 26, 2009

I purchased this garage door opener as a replacement for the original Genie garage door opener that came with the house. Either due to poor manufacturing quality or poor/incorrect installation, the existing Genie garage door opener failed to last more than 12 yrs. So, with some reservation, I purchased another one--this model. I could not be more pleased. It is whisper quiet. Installation was fairly straight forward, though not really for the faint of heart. The instructions were a B+, in my opinion, as they were predominantly correct except for the last part about the wiring. I truly believe the wring instructions had the wiring criss-crossed and were printed for another model. But, when I reversed the wiring the device worked as advertised--perfectly. My one constructive criticism is that the mounting braces that were included with the garage door opener, itself, to attach to the ceiling are just flimsy. While they worked, they just were not the rock solid, non-sway type that I was accustomed to. So, I gave a few more dollars to HD to get the more robust angle iron to suspend the garage door opener the way it should have been to start with and, voila!, it's solid as a rock with no sway. I would indeed recommend this garage door opener to anyone with a pre-installed garage door. It will take a few hours (took me about 4-6 hrs), but will you will be proud of this opener and the job you get out of it.

5 Star Review   By SomGop on Home Depot - Dec 26, 2009

Bought this Genie Excelerator H8000 from HD 12/2003 - installed it myself as a replacement for a contractor grade noisy unit. Flawless operation since then. I lube the rail and screw annually with Genie approved lube to keep the warranty valid. IT HAS A LIFETIME PARTS AND IN-HOME LABOR WARRANTY!! For the extra couple of bucks vs. the cheaper units, I wanted that warranty!!! 3 family members have since bought this unit

The best garage
5 Star Review   By shalakov on Home Depot - Sep 5, 2009

Guys this is the best! So fast, quiet and intelligent. If you are going to spend few bucks anyway add just a couple more and please yourself. My job moved few times in a new house and I was installing Craftsman garage door opener every time we moved. Boy, I was wrong! A+++. Neighbors across the street are wondering what makes my garage door open so fast and quiet. Feels and runs flawless.

Great GDO
5 Star Review   By wolverine2281 on Home Depot - Aug 31, 2009

This GDO was fairly easy to install and even easier if you have an extra $120 for HD to install for you. It opens quite fast but still lowers slowly enough to be safe. It is also very quiet. I opened and closed it while my wife was in the baby's room outside of the washroom and told her to see if she could hear it. I went back inside and she was still waiting for me to try it :) Would recommend

Excellent Garage Door Opener
5 Star Review   By Huntsville on Home Depot - May 28, 2009

The garage door opener in the house I just bought died after the 3rd day of owning the place. I bought the Genie Excelerator Powerlift H8000-07 as a replacement. Installation is not difficult but can be time consuming. It took me about 6 hours to install, but that included a couple of mistakes on my part that could have been avoided by paying closer attention to the directions. The only potential problem you may run into is if your old system attached to the brackets on the front of the power head instead of on the side. This means the brackets won't line up to this power head. This can easily be solved by drilling a couple new holes in the ceiling studs a littler further from the door and mounting the bracket there. It's worked very well ever since I got it installed. It is much quieter than any other garage door opener I've used in the past. There is a slight buzz from the engine, and the moving parts of the system are even quieter than the engine. On all the previous models of garage door openers I've used, I couldn't even hear the engine because the chain or screw made so much noise. The other nice feature of this unit is that it opens about twice as fast as most other doors, but it closes at the normal 'safe' speed. The increased speed is nice for security (getting inside your house faster), and even if you're not worried about security it's nice not having to sit in your car waiting on your door to open. This model has a lifetime warranty for the engine, parts, and home labor. One note, the warranty is non-transferable and Genie's definition of 'lifetime' means for as long as you own your home. Having just bought a new house, I couldn't pass up the warranty on the model at the Home Depot.

GDO Genie Excelerator a must
5 Star Review   By Practical on Home Depot - Mar 30, 2009

The Genie Excelerator is an excellent garage door opener. The instructions are very easy to follow and the Genie website offers a step by step instruction demo. The Genie Excelerator is extremely quiet and fast. You hardly hear this GDO when the door is opening or closing. All you hear is the garage door rollers. Furthermore, the garage door opens about twice as fast as any other opener in the market. The total installation took me around 4 hours (including the removal of the old garage door opener). This was the first gdo I have installed myself, and expect this GDO to be the last one I will install on my current house, as this is the only retail garage door opener with a lifetime warranty the motor, parts and in-house labor.
