Terrible experience with this product and company
1 Star Review   By JimmyTheGent on Home Depot - Feb 20, 2013

The very first time I tried to use it, I had to have my small engine guy come out and repair it! It did provide 19 hours of service during that storm. The next storm that came up, it started instantly, so I was psyched. HOWEVER, it didn't produce any electricity! After endless time on hold with their customer support line, the woman told me that it was probably that the "charge head had demagnetized," and it would need to be serviced. The main power receptacle was also busted, after just a couple of uses. Home Depot doesn't service these units. Finally found a listed service agent in my area, who told me that they no longer worked for Ridgid because of problems with the company. They DID however service Subaru engines, so they took it on that basis. I'm glad that some people are having a good experience with it, but believe me, they'll no doubt run into problems and regret the purchase. It looks great, but this is not a quality product or company.

Looking Forward To Starting this RIDGID RD8000 Generator
2 Star Review   By HI2PNW on Home Depot - Nov 26, 2012

The RIDGID RD8000 Portable Generator is one that I've had my eye on since these debuted, and finally was able to buy one this past Saturday. After reading the manual and looking over videos on YouTube and elsewhere online, I did the preparation to get it started. Fresh gasoline and the included oil was put into this generator. Now there's a problem of the engine not starting/running on its own power. I went over the manual again and again and in the Troubleshooting page, but no matter what I did it simply would not run. I'm not giving up on this generator yet, but I'll have to troubleshoot it some more before I decide to return it. At least I'm finding this out now rather than if and when power goes out in my neck of the woods and having to go through this issue!

Strong power output, relatively easy to move around, LOUD!
3 Star Review   By Tony on Home Depot - Nov 20, 2012

I think this product is a bit expensive and pretty loud for its price point. Otherwise the generator's advertised power output and run time seem to be accurate. It started right up with both the electric start and the pull cord. Be aware that it is difficult to fill with oil without a funnel (not provided) or tipping the unit on the side. They could have added an extended filler tube without compromising weight or cost.

Terrible product
1 Star Review   By Rick on Home Depot - Nov 16, 2012

Bought this generator in advance of Hurricane Sandy. Fired it up Monday night and it ran for a total of 21 hours and it stopped producing electricity. Called 800 number and was told to take it to repairman in Hightstown, NJ. Was diagnosed as needing a new altenator. Repairman ordered new altenator, but it is on backorder. It is now 17 days and still do not have our generator repaired.

Great value for the money
5 Star Review   By BigRichard on Home Depot - Nov 15, 2012

Did tons of research and besides going with a Honda or a Yamaha generator which are awesome but 2 to 3 times the price, this was best value for my money. This unit powered my 1/2 HP well pump, TV, oil burner, all my lights and microwave without any signs of overload. Love the Subaru made engine. Yes the unit has a chinese made generator head but from TTI who makes parts for many other units. Unless you go with a Honda just about all models out there are made in China. The big complaint I have read is the remote start panel not having a way to turn the choke on and off. This makes the remote panel kind of useless if the engine is cold. There's a YouTube video of an owner that made a remote cable activated choke that worked excellent. Look for the title "installing a generator for easy activation". Brilliant idea! I drove myself crazy going back and forth between different brands and models....I wanted a Honda EM6500 but could not see spending over 3K. True you get what you pay for but for the amount of use this will have I should be fine for a long time. I have read reviews of owners going over 500 hours with no issues. No this is not a Honda but at least it has a decent 3 year warranty, service center near by and for the most part very good reviews. Good luck!

the generator was used on a job site for the first 30 hrs. Brought it home right before Sandy hit, i am 1 hour north of nyc so our area was hit pretty hard. we were without power for 6 days, but the Rigid made it feel like nothing happened. i Changed oil to synthetic before the storm at the 30 hr mark and it performed flawlessly. i ran it over 100 hrs and was very happy with its performance. the lcd also tells you when service is due.i changed the oil again and spark plug at 100 hrs. it is well built, gives out clean power as i run through the panel with an interlock kit. It was practically like power never went out. i find it to be top quality, i am impressed with the subaru engine. the design makes it easy to move and it is not as loud as most gens it size. in my opinion it is high quality and excellent value for a generator of its size.

Not pleased at all
1 Star Review   By Jcook1 on Home Depot - Nov 3, 2012

I really have a hard time understanding how anyone can like this generator. I used this generator twice. The first time after using it the generator did not work and I had to replace the fuel filter. I tried to using the generator during Hurricane Sandy because my power went out and the unit ran for just barley an hour for one day then died and now I can't get it started. I called customer service and they told me to add oil which I don't understand how I need oil if the unit was never used and still don't start. My next generator is a Honda and please learn from mistake don't buy this generator.

A life saver!
5 Star Review   By David62 on Home Depot - Nov 3, 2012

We are now in day 5 without power in the aftermath of hurricane Sandy in NE PA. This unit has powered my whole 3,000 sq/ft house including an electric hot water heater, 3 refrigerators, well pump and furnace It runs smoothly and gives stable power. It's noisy but in order to get quieter power I'd have to buy a Honda at double the price. It's not worth it.

Generators with bad air cleaner box = voided warranty
1 Star Review   By SGTBraddick on Home Depot - Oct 2, 2012

If you buy this generator before running it zip tie the air filter cover on because the vibration will loosen the bolt holding it in place. We bought this generator a little over a year ago didn't use it until last October The bolt fell out the air filter came off I don't know how long it was off but I zip tied it on and had to replace the bolt but the damage was done. Took it in and the motor needed to be replaced but because it had sucked in dirt on the filter box it voided the warranty. My brother in law has the 6500 and same thing happened on his with the air box. Be warned There are better generators out there for better prices

Reliable unit, on my end!
4 Star Review   By RoninSI on Home Depot - Sep 26, 2012

Bought this generator earlier this year(Feb,2012?), after hearing a friend talk about his and reading reviews. Was really worried about the power usage of the house and what it might draw, but didn't/couldn't purchase a instant on unit since we didn't have a natural gas or propane supply. As others have said it is so easy to move around! Even with a lower back injury, I was able to move this unit around with its 'dolly' like handle and balanced structure! And assembly is nothing other than fastening the wheels. Only con that I've found so far of the unit, is it is somewhat loud. But would you rather deal with a lil noise or no power? One issue that does worry me is, about the battery. I would love for the generator to charge it, but I don't think it does. So I worry about having to buy another one when this one reaches its lifespan... Maybe there are other options, but I will worry about them when they come along, as there is also the pull start! I hadn't a chance to use it all year other than running it for a monthly maintenance and the occasional running just to try it out. But finally the time came the other night to try it out with a power outage! We had a Reliance Controls 200-Amp Outdoor Manual Transfer Panel installed which we purchased from another supplier, and utilized the 25' rigid brand cable to the power inlet. I now see they have a 50' for even less(on sale) and I may get this weekend. The power was very clean, as we have surge protectors on almost all our electronics and CFL bulbs that showed absolutely no flickering of lights. The only drain noticed was when the electric hot water heater kicked on, the tone of the Subaru engine changed very slightly. As the temps were not extreme, we didn't power the furnace or A/C at this time. But when the need arises we will adjust used circuits as the need dictates. It is quite the thrill to have lights, internet, satellite, phone, and a feeling of security when everyone else in your neighborhood is without. It's also a good feeling to know you can lend it to a family member or friend if they might happen to need it. In closing, I would purchase this unit again in a heartbeat even though the price has gone up! I would also not hesitate to suggest this to anyone I know. The only reason I didn't give a five star rating is I haven't used it that long, and the motor is slightly louder than I would like. Other than that is has fulfilled our needs!!!

I bought this generator before the hurricane came through New Jersey last year it worked very well I have recently had electrical work done on my home to allow me to use a generator to run my whole house if needed my only to complaints are the generator is loud I wish they would make a muffler attachment for it my other complaint is that the that maker of the generator says do not use E 85 ethanol well here in New Jersey you have to you cannot buy gasoline without it when you are done using the generator turn the gas off and let it run dry you will find when you started up the next time it starts much easier so always run it dry

Poor Warranty
1 Star Review   By Naples on Home Depot - Aug 28, 2012

Bought Generator a year ago. Never used until Hurricane Isaac came. Generator worked OK. The problem was the never flat tires went flat and it was very difficult to move. Called Rigid warranty and was told the Tires were only a 90 day warranty, not three years, and that I should have known that because I should have read the limitations written in the back of the operators manual............. ;-( Pretty bad customer service

Exceptional power for the price
5 Star Review   By Mike on Home Depot - Jul 31, 2012

Ridgid advertises its generators by listing its running watts first which means you get a solid 8000 watts with the surge capacity of 10000 watts which is the opposite of what most manufacturers do. The unit was ordered on line and delivered 6 days later by New England Motor Freight without a scratch.Easy to assemble. One person can easily do it if you have a couple pieces of wood to prop each end up while you install the wheels and legs.I'd use my own oil rather than the no name brand that it came with which also had no API ratings on the bottle. Pour in a whole quart before starting. pull the manual starter several times to fill the carb with fuel, then hit the choke and turn the key. Suburu engine fired immediately and only needs the choke for maybe 5 seconds. The model I got had a build date of almost a year ago and I'm glad because they've recently added a fuel vapor containment system on the newer ones and some owners have reported fuel starvation problems as the tank isn't vented and after several minutes or run time, opening the fuel cap results in a big wooosh created by the vacuum. This is also a problem on the 6800 watt model with Yamaha motor. However, this unit appears to be a beast, power-wise, somewhat noisy, but not terrible.I installed a Reliance 3140CRK transfer switch, which by the way DOES handle this 8000 watt unit, even though it says 7500 max in its on line specs. Its one of the FAQ's on Reliance's website and its box even says 8000.Running furnace motor, 2 refigerators, tons of lights and a washer, microwave, and everything I could turn on , the thing was putting out about 5000, so there's plenty in reserve to start other appliances, etc..At first I thought the digital display on the generator was defective because I plugged in a 500 watt work light and it read no output, but it turns out the light was such a small percentage of its output that it wasn't sensing the load, the threshold seems to be a little over 500-600 watts. the meter also displays hours of operation in whole hours, not tenths, so you need to run one full hour for it to advance.Newer models appear to have a new display which you can scroll through more info like % of output. The design and build quality, I think, is first rate. The "Zero -Gravity" handle is awesome and it rolls easily.Make sure and use the locking pin on left side of handle when moving the unit. This type of generator can not utilize an Eco-Throttle as they must run at full RPM to produce their power, so it does run flat out all the time but still has great run time with the 8 gal tank.It produced smooth steady current same as the power company . You could easily run your whole house, and hook up a couple neighbors to help them out.I haven't seen a unit of this output at anywhere near this price. I had to order on line due to shortages in the stores after a power outage and it cost $55 shipping surcharge, but if its in stock at the store or HD online runs one of its free shipping deals with no weight limitations , you'll save some cash.I'm done running extension cords from my small portable generator which has been retired to camping duty.Extended power outages are becoming more frequent, and now I can have the house up and running like normal in less than 5 minutes, for less than $2k total investment. Plus, still have the portability, if needed, for a worksite that you wouldn't have with a whole house automatic system. The only thing I did was add a length of fuel hose to the carb float bowl nipple so I can drain the carb for cleaning or storage without making a mess.

Hard time understanding all the good reviews...
1 Star Review   By DoNotBuyThis on Home Depot - Jul 27, 2012

I don't own one of these but have ALOT of experience with them, I repair them a service center which I will not name. Since they introduced these they have been coming in for major repairs with very few hours. The issue is not the engine, if you are having engine problems 95% of the time you have bad gasoline or not enough oil in it which is not covered under warranty. The issue is with the cheaply made Chinese generator head. They short out very easily and since these are made so cheaply in China you cannot get individual parts so you must buy the entire generator head to repair it which is many times on backorder so good luck getting it repaired in less than a month or more. Also many times the control box has gone bad or the voltaqe regulator is bad, many times it is several of these things that go bad in conjunction. Don't waste your money on this, buy a COMPLETE Honda or Yamaha generator with a Honda or Yamaha Engine and generator head. Remember, you get what you pay for.

1 Star Review   By john102 on Home Depot - Jul 22, 2012

To start i cant say a bad thing at all about Home Depot they have worked with me threw all all my problems to date so far with out an issue. Now for the generator I am on my fifth one threw exchanges and everyone of them after about 30 hours ends up vapor locking I believe. The generator will run for 1-2 minutes cuts out and when restarted does it all over again. I have removed fuel cap trying to see if that would fix issue with negative luck. I was unable to go away this week end with my family tried to use generator to operate a well pump for water and they were unable to get the generator to run for more than five min they did get storage tank filled before quiting completly. I have contacted subaru because ridged will not take responcibilty for the unit .subaru has done nothing to help solve mater either. I would not recomend this unit to anyone and the current unit started with the problem with 27 hours of use . I am curious if their are any other owners that have experienced this issue?

Nice Generator, Lousy Motor
1 Star Review   By psdx on Home Depot - Jul 20, 2012

I owned this for 3 years before I finally needed it for an extended outage. During the three years I ran it every 6-8 weeks and out a load on it, drained the carb and covered it back up. When I needed it, it ran for 3 minutes after I flipped the transfer switch, then the engine died. I found out later that e timing chain broke - with only 4 hours on the engine. And of course the lifetime service agreement doesn't cover the engine. There is nothing a user can do to cause the engine timing chain to break. That's a defect. Thanks Home Depot!

Not designed for use in wet weather - not ideal for power outage
3 Star Review   By VirginiaBuyer on Home Depot - Jul 17, 2012

Generator is easy to assemble and startup. Runs well. But during recent power outage, it shutdown after a light rain began, and would not restart until gas was drained from carburetor and gas tank. Gas from carburetor had water, but gas from tank did not. So only conclusion is that water was drawn into carburetor thru the air filter. In future power outages during wet weather, I will either have to shutdown generator or erect a shelter for protection (shelter was a suggestion from Ridgid customer service!). Ridgid should more prominently display the "dry weather" requirement for potential customers. A statement is buried in a long list of instructions on page 3 of operating manual: "Do not operate or store the generator in rain, snow, or wet weather." When I queried Ridgid technical support why, their reply was "Electricity and water do not mix well, and create a dangerous situation. It can be used in wet weather, if properly sheltered. " Strange, since many other brand generators can operate safely in wet weather. Another instruction on page 3: "For power outages, permanently installed stationary generators are better suited". Apparently, this generator is intended for power tools at construction sites. There is contradictory info for the spark plug replacement type on pages 10 & 17. Subaru tech support confirmed that the correct type is NGK BR6HS. The manual states on page 10 and Figure 13 that there is a fuel gauge...but there is none.

Gas Gauge
5 Star Review   By RogB on Home Depot - Jul 7, 2012

Love it but when the Derecho hit Northern VA last week we weren't home to test it. If so none of the food in two refrigs would have spoiled. Not big enough for central a/c but bought 6,500 watt window unit for br in case of another outage. Anyone know if a gauge can be bought after market for this genny?

Definitely a good buy
5 Star Review   By Allen on Home Depot - Jun 24, 2012

When my RIDGID 8000 watt generator arrived, I followed the quick set-up directions, pulled the cord through three times slowly to get fuel in the lines, hit the electric starter (battery came fully charged) and she started immediately. I do not think it is too loud. It is definitely well constructed and OH SO easy to move around. I called Subaru and it was suggested that I use "Ethanol Shield" in the gas. It is available at Home Depot. Question...has anyone actually used this generator during a storm when it had to sit outside in the rain?

Rigid & Rugged!
5 Star Review   Home Depot

The design concept is revolutionary, it is somehow "caged" and very easy to move around. It delivers enough power for welding and to power heavy duty equipment. The detachable panel is simply brilliant!

Well built and plenty of power.
5 Star Review   By zublub on Home Depot - Apr 22, 2012

This is a big, heavy generator with enough power to run my whole house including the AC/furnace. I have a 50 amp outlet outside for my camper that I plug into and run power back into the house. The Subaru engine runs sweet and fires up with a turn of the key. The heavy duty frame on wheels thankfully works well because this beast is over 200lbs! My only knock, however minor, is it would be nice to have a fuel gauge built-in to the gas cap.

Great Product, Wish I Bought Sooner!
5 Star Review   By RogB on Home Depot - Mar 11, 2012

What a beauty. Easy to assemble wheel kit and once we got it unloaded from SUV (had to rent ramps) no problem wheeling it around to where the electrician will place the plug. Put in oil and gas (after reading manual!) and battery started it instantly. After a few puffs of white smoke, ran flawlessly. One thing I don't understand is why there is an oil port and drain plug on both sides. Manual doesn't mention that so I assume it's for accessibility reasons but not sure. Also I used the oil they recommended but I see where one reviewer said 40 weight should be used at first. Not sure if I should drain and start over again. Electrician coming tomorrow for transfer switch so can't review it beyond this point. All I can say after researching portable generators until my hair hurt I'm glad I got this. Noisy but aren't they all except the expensive Hondas. For only occasional use I think this will fill the bill.

good value, some clarification of features
4 Star Review   By JDaL on Home Depot - Mar 6, 2012

ZeroGravity great, easy to move like a hand truck instead of a wheel barrel. Load indicator monitors 20 amp output, 30 amp is not monitored. Subaru engine has proven reliability, note electric motor is not made by Subaru.

Excellent quality
5 Star Review   By MSD1953 on Home Depot - Feb 11, 2012

Purchased back in August 2011. I ran the remote start through the basement wall ordered the natural gas hook up and starter relay and made an outdoor shelter with breathing vents and a commercial fan to the keep the unit cool.Along with a 8KW transfer box no more gasoline concerns my wife turns the starter key and flips a few switches on the transfer box and presto, no longer have to go outside when the grid goes down. Happy wife happy life.

5 Star Review   By JMNY on Home Depot - Feb 6, 2012

My generator was delivered on time and in perfect condition. Set up was easy and I was up and running in about 30 minutes. The thing does look impressive and the hand truck like dolly works great. I have not had the opportunity to use this generator to power my home yet ( thank God ) but have used it to power some heavy duty power tools. Unit starts right up and and runs effortlessly. I wish the motor had an oil filter but I can also tell you that I have a cement mixer with the same brand engine and it has never failed me so I am confident that this one should work well also. No complaints...happy customer.

Awesome Generator!
5 Star Review   By Chip on Home Depot - Jan 25, 2012

I have an RD8000 that I put about 40 hours (ran in 1/2 day stretches during 4 day power outage) on in the recent Seattle Ice storm. First real test of my generator solution since the big windstorm in 2006. The RD8000 is part of an integrated manual power backup system. My electrical panel supports manual disconnect/lockout of the utility power when enabling the 30AMP/240V generator input. While I keep my 5500W electric hot water heater off and rarely use the electric range, all lights, nat gas furnace, refrigerator, microwave, etc... run VERY well on this generator. I built a small shed outside to house the generator (keep out of elements) and provided full ground connection with 8' ground rod to make sure the solution was correctly grounded. When setting up my manual power backup system, I tried 2 other generators of slightly lower wattage in the 700-1000$ price range. Their alternators were terrible and my appliances struggled running on them. It is a night/day difference with the RD8000 and the Armor Alternator - appliances run smoothly, generator reacts well to increases in loading and I have no need to upgrade to an expensive invertor generator based on the quality electrical output from this unit. The design of the unit with the tall handle makes it very easy to move. The 8 gallon gas tank kept my furnace/refrigerator going for upwards of 16 hours between refueling. Starting was a BREEZE with the electrical start - first time starts every time. Oil drain plug is in an odd location, but spillage is minimal and both oil changes were pretty easy. In a perfect world I wish it was a little lighter and less expensive, but you get what you pay for and this generator is worth the money!

Well worth the extra cost.
5 Star Review   By EGE184 on Home Depot - Jan 24, 2012

I have used several portable generators in the past which performed well however, they were always a little shy on capacity and run time. The RIDGID 8000 gives me the added hours of run time I was looking for and the Subaru engine runs smooth as silk. The 10,000 watts starting capacity is something my other generators fall short on and this feature alone is worth the extra money. No more voltage drops. Other reviews said it was a bit loud but I found it to be quieter then the other generators I have used, a pleasant surprise. The 8000 is a high quality machine as I have found all RIDGID products to be.

Does its job
4 Star Review   By Braddo on Home Depot - Jan 20, 2012

Generator works well, powers our whole house and the remote control feature is neat. Only think missing is remote choke. Because I keep the remote panel in the house I end up pull starting more than I use the electric start. Fine for me, not so good for the wife who can't pull start it. When the generator is cold she has to go outside, flip the choke on, run inside, turn the key to start it, then go back out and flip the choke off. Not the end of the world but not exactly convenient especially when the weather is bad.

5 Star Review   By 69gtocrazyman69 on Home Depot - Jan 8, 2012

Once you cut the shipping box apart, add the two rear wheels, two front supports, attach two wires to the battery and add oil and you are ready to go [all required hardware and oil is supplied, tools are your responsibility]. It takes about 30 minutes to put it together. Having a helper makes the addition of the wheels go quicker. One person pushes up on the handle and the other person attaches the wheels. Most batteries are shipped in a discharged state, the battery supplied with this model kicked over the motor with the first crank. I tested the Zero gravity frame by having my wife move it. She is a fraction of the weight of the machine and she could easily move it with the high handle supplied. The next time we have an outtage, I will have her set it up, "just for practice" (wink).

A simple solution to a New England problem...
5 Star Review   By WebGuy on Home Depot - Jan 3, 2012

After the Halloween Weekend ice storm (2011), getting a generator just "seemed like the thing to do." After 8 days without electricity, the decision wasn't a hard one. I looked at reviews, prices, features and specs for weeks on end. In the end, the RIDGID 8,000 always seemed to come up on top of the list. The generator is an iron horse! Very well build. And, thank the Generator Gods for the Zero-Gravity feature. For as heavy as the machine is, it is truly a breeze to move around. It "fired up" on the first turn of the key with the electronic starter. Obviously, the battery had enough charge on delivery to handle it. It runs like a charm. Of course, I had to try it with the pull start - and, that too, was flawless. It cost a little more than some of the other models I was looking at, but it really does appear to be well worth the price. The logic is/was, "Why settle for a little less than you need when a little more than you need really can make things comfortable – and the price difference really wasn't that much!" Once I have the transfer switch hooked up - the notion of the next power failure seems to be something that I actually welcome. Looking forward to putting this baby to the full test, and feel assured that it will handle it well. Assembly took less a half hour from shipping crate to starting it the first time. It stores nicely in the garage and wheels outside as easily as pushing a lawnmower.

Unit should come with 30' connection to Transfer switch cord (lacking), but overall a very good value. Only missing feature would be an auto idle down to save fuel and noise. Have not had opportunity to use in an outage or in cold weather.

Another home run from the Ridgid brand!
5 Star Review   By Matt on Home Depot - Dec 28, 2011

Every aspect of this purchase went well. Easy to order, shipping was fast, and performance has been excellent. The only thing that was unclear was the comparison chart on the website when comparing this model to others. The website seemed to confuse features, for example it stated that this model did not come with wheels when it in fact does. Other then that, excellent all around.

Easy Assembly; powerful generator
5 Star Review   By BobW on Home Depot - Dec 28, 2011

Just did then first run-though with my local electrian. I needed to have a new cable made to get the 30A plug interfaced with my 50A transfer box. I have a large house and this generator nailed the whole house without issue. Ran the heat, well pump, TVs, lights, fidge, internet - all without a studder and with headroom even running airblowers. Could use the stove if needed. Having the electrian here gave me the confidence this generator was the right answer - he monitored the current load as we turned on all the electric in the house needed. Very impressed with the ability of the generator to hold the line, not surge up or down, and so easy to assemble and start-up. Good value for when it's needed. Only sore point - can't use it outdoors in rain or snow...

Solid heavy duty feel
5 Star Review   By BC2000 on Home Depot - Dec 27, 2011

The generator looks and feels heavy duty unlike the other models sold in stores. The design beats my friends honda. I like the zero gravity feature for the easy moving around despite the heavy weight of the unit. The engine started up without any problems at the first trail. The battery start is a awesome feature. Make sure and charge the battery prior the install and maintain the charge during storage. The unit is tastefully finished and nicely painted. I contacted customer support regarding the Subaru engine oil changes and type. I was told not to use synthetic oils. Also, for the breaking period I was told to use straight 40 weight oil for the first 20 hrs with heavy load on the generator so the seals and rings set properly. The tech support said that most of the people don't use the generator to it's designed capacity. The engine is not your typical engine, it is a commercial duty motor so it has to be broken in with heavy oil. After 20 hrs change to regular 10w-30 oil for the remaining life of the engine. Remember, this is not in the users manual.

Optimistic
5 Star Review   By Mark on Home Depot - Dec 6, 2011

Item was delivered promptly in perfect condition. It is obviously built like a tank, and weighs almost as much as one. The minor assembly of the feet wheels and battery connection took 1/2 hour, but is absolutely a 2 peron job. I had my electrician install the 8000 watt transfer panel and plug. We fired up the generator threw the main breaker to simulate a power failure, then engaged the generator. Well pump, lights, refrigerator heater, all on together, and the generator didn't blink. I'm pretty confident in the next power outage, I won't suffer like I have in the past. One caviete, this unit has a key start, and when I first tried it the generator would not start, even though the battery was strong. I then tried to start it with the manual start and kicked over on one pull. It now starts with the key. It seems that pulling the recoil once pulls gas down the fuel line, the first time.

I am not the most mechanically inclined individual but from the time I uncrated this to the time I started it up was less than an hour. And, it started the first time without any hesitation. This generator is easy to maneuver and provides plenty of power to run everything in my house except the heavy draw items (washer, dryer, stove). This generator was a great deal as the price included the drop ship charges to my home.

Awesome Generator!
4 Star Review   By NewGeneratorMan on Home Depot - Nov 18, 2011

Just like so many others, I lost power during the Halloween Weekend blizzard of 2011. Unfortunately, my 18 year old generator's carb quit on me. The repair guy said it was a minimum of $250 to get it running again. Luckily my brother let me borrow his for a few hours each day, so we were in pretty good shape. But, I decided I wasn't going to go through this again. Being the techie, research hound that I am, I started researching every generator in the world in earnest. I kept going back and forth between a whole house propane system (i.e. I don't have propane or natural gas currently) to another portable. I actually had decided to go with a smaller portable (i.e. 5000-6000 watts) but there were none to be had, other than "quiet" Honda's, which I was not willing to pay for, or B&S "Storm Responders", which didn't have many good reviews. I finally decided to "bite the bullet" and purchase this fine, 8000 watt, Subaru powered (owned Subarus for years and loved them) generator. I couldn't be happier. The thing went together in a snap, it's built like a tank, and it started within 3 seconds using the electic start with it's partially charged battery. It is a bit loud, but not as loud as I expected. I suppose if I wanted to spend another few thousand, I could have gotten the Honda, but I just couldn't justify that kind of money for the difference in volume. I haven't had a chance to do a "real world" test, but I did plug in two 1500 watt heaters. I turned on the first and the engine didn't even stutter. I turned on the second and it stuttered ever so slightly. But, the Subaru engine runs like a dream. Everything about this gen reeks of quality. The Zero Gravity Handle turns it into a hand truck. Very easy to move it over the lawn. My original plan was to backfeed through the dryer outlet. But, after reading many negative posts online from utility workers, as well as the fact that it could nullify your house insurance in the event of a fire, I decided to go with a transfer switch. Of course, they are on back order till at least the middle of December. In the meantime, I will use extension cords if needed. I also decided that I want to keep it quiet and make it more "permanent", so I am going to build a sound deadening, weatherproof enclosure. That way I can keep it sitting right next to house and won't have to move it. I will make sure to drain the carb and tank whenever it's not in use and will always use Stabil in the gas. That should ensure another 18 years of service like I had with my last one (a cheap Homelite). Bottom line, buy it. It seems to be built very well, and I have seen mostly great reviews on it. Plus, with this amount of power, I expect I will be able to run my electic water heater in addition to my fridge, chest freezer, pellet stove, microwave, coffeer maker, tv's, computers, and house lights. Of course I will take care not to use high wattage things together.

Better than Expected Performance
5 Star Review   By HappyInCT on Home Depot - Nov 5, 2011

Just used it for 5 1/2 days non stop. (bought it less a month ago!) Did its Job Better than Expected. As others have mentioned - it is bit loud, but out-performs many other GenSets in the price range. PROS 1) Zero Gravity Handle works very well. 2) @ 50% load you can get 11+ hrs on a tank of gas. 3) Starts & runs like a champ 4) Excellent Suburu engine. 5) Nieghbors think it looks cool (no one complained about the noise) 6) Powered a 4,300 SQFT House no problem (did not use Electric Dryer and Stove at the same time) Cons (little to no impact in an emergency situation) 1) No Gas Gauge 2) A bit loud (But many others GenSets are too) 3) No Remote Choke Buy it - You WILL Like it!

Fantastic generator, highly recommend
5 Star Review   By JeremyB on Home Depot - Nov 3, 2011

The specs say you get 11 hours @ 50% load, I am running 13 hours consistently @ between 55 and 65% load with spikes up to 90% for a few minutes (running a microwave) with fuel remaining. I would expect I can run to 14 hours if I run it dry. The zero gravity roll cage is no joke, I was amazed at how easily I could move mine around. The control unit at the front is detachable as well which gives me some piece of mind about theft deterrence as we have the control module inside the house at present, and the key start with a battery is great. I really really like this thing. The Subaru motor is a sweetheart it fires right up instantly and levels out to its running speed near instantly. Only real drawbacks I see are the noise (~80 db) if you are in tight quarters, and as another reviewer mentioned the choke control is still on the generator so remote starting it from the command module requires 2 people if you are starting it cold - one at the key and one to operate the choke. A little inconvenient but this unit has been a godsend and performed flawless after the recent Nor'easter in MA where I have not had power for 5 days now and have had this unit running non stop since with zero problems and perfect power delivery running everything from refrigerators and sensitive electronics, tvs, dvd players, etc...

GOOD GENERATOR
4 Star Review   By gene on Home Depot - Oct 31, 2011

I HAVE BEEN PLEASED SO FAR WITH THE RIGID 8000 WATT GENERATOR, HOWEVER WHEN I BOUGHT THE GENERATOR IT HAS A EXTENSION TO PLACE A REMOTE STARTER INSIDE, WHICH I DID. HOWEVER NOT UNTIL AFTER INSTALLATION DID I FIND THAT YOU HAVE TO MANUALLY CHOCK THE GENERATOR AT THE UNIT, SO THE REMOTE PANEL TO START IS USELESS. YOU CAN STOP IT WITH THE TURN KEY FROM THE REMOTE PANEL. I WAS TRYING TO MAKE IT EASY ON MY WIFE TO HAVE THE REMOTE PANEL INSIDE DURING THE WINTER, BUT SHE STILL HAS TO RUN OUTSIDE TO SET THE CHOCK EACH TIME. RIGID SHOULD HAVE HAD THIS NOTED THAT THIS REALLY ISN'T A REMOTE STARTER. IF ANYONE KNOWS OF A SOLUTION TO THIS I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW. ALSO AN EASIER LOCATION FOR THE OIL CHECK WHICH IS ON THE BOTTOM OF THE ENGINE. AN OIL FILTER WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE. QUESTIONING IF I WOULD HAVE NOT LOOKED ELSEWHERE BECAUSE OF THE REMOTE SITUATION. BUT IT WORKS AND CARRIES THE LOAD I NEED.

Well constructed unit at a fair price
5 Star Review   By Flyboy on Home Depot - Sep 4, 2011

We bought this unit in the early aftermath of Irene. The folks at Nashua, NH. Home Depot where great. Within minutes of completing the assembly I filled the crankcase with oil and fuel then turned the key. The unit fired off quickly and ran for days with no problems. Great features and would only have liked to see an oil filter on the engine as I plan on keeping this unit for a long time. I believe this was mentioned on other reviews but all and all it's a great product that I do not regret buying.

It will run a 2.5 ton ac unit
5 Star Review   By Jamstoyz on Home Depot - Sep 4, 2011

First of all, I am an electrical contractor. I couldnt justify spending over $2 grand on a whole house system so I bought this model. I specifically wanted a gen to run my ac unit. Well guess what? It does. It actually ran my ac, furnace, fridge, sump, and 2 cfl lights. I have this hooked up to my panel (back feeding but not recommended) fyi, my ac unit draws 21 amps. I do however have to shut everything off and run my ac and furnace first than I can turn other circuits on. The gen does hesitate a little when the ac starts but after the initial start up its fine. I think if I would have got the 15k gen I would have no problems what so ever. I even ran a buzzer off my main service wires to tell me when the utility power turns back on. All in all I would recommend this gen but Im still debating on returning it and spending the $2600 on a whole house unit. ps, this gen is very loud but well built.

Outstanding Generator .. Worth it's weight in gold!
5 Star Review   By OldNavyPilot on Home Depot - Sep 1, 2011

Just finished 3 days of running this generator after Tropical storm Irene knocked Eastern MA. on our behinds. For years I wondered if I should install a permanent unit outside with an automatic switch but when losing power is rare and for short durations, this unit has me covered. This generator had NO problem running a refrigerator, hot water heater, TV, DVD player, several lights, Electric garage door opener, two medical devices, CPAP and an Oxygen pump. I could have easily connected more devices but I ran out of extension cords. Right out of the box this unit started right up after 45 minutes of assembling the wheels and filling the oil. The removable panel is a great idea if you are a contractor and you need to start and stop the generator if you were on a roof or up off the ground working on an elevated deck. As for a backup generator the load meter on the removable panel is outstanding allowing you judge if more devices could be added and to judge how much fuel you are going to be burning since this unit will run about 10 hours at 50% load. Even being 74 years old I was able to move this generator to the edge of the garage with a small amount of effort. The only two items I would improve would be for Rigid to have manufactured an extension fill tube with a longer dip stick to fill and check the oil. The oil fill cap is located at the very bottom of the engine and is somewhat difficult to add oil and check the level. The other issue would be is for Subaru to have a spin on oil filter with a larger sump allowing this unit to run longer and cleaner between oil changes. Overall I am very happy with my purchase. I just ran it with fuel stabilizer and changed the oil after our power was restored. We rarely lose power but I am ready for the next time.

Still a good performer with over 100 hours
4 Star Review   By hardlydone on Home Depot - Aug 31, 2011

Bought this during the blizzards of 09-10. Now writing this on generator power during the fourth day post-Irene. Was a little pricey but it has proved to be a solid performer. I thought the extra cost worth it due to the 8000 watt output, easy portability - really is zero-gravity, and multiple hook-ups (30 amp and 20 amp). After 120 hours of service I have not been disappointed. First - you do have to invest in an electrician to get a proper hook up. I chose the lockout device option on my original panel rather than going with an entirely separate panel. The size of the generator carries most everything except AC. I can even power my hot water heater if I shut other things off. Fuel efficiency has been good. Averaging about a half gallon an hour over four days continuous use right now. I'd say most times I am under 50% load. Zero -gravity really makes a difference. My wife can roll this out and set it up with no problem (after showing her how several times). Starts every time - hot and cold weather. Cons: As others have said - it is loud. The service schedule needs to be followed - the suggestions to do so on the use readout is great! As others have said the oil drain is in a horrible location. I had to prop the whole thing up on blocks to get a pan under it and easily access the bolt.

4 Star Review   By Renie on Home Depot - Aug 26, 2011

I chose this model because of the electric starter, I find it very difficult to start the pull starter type.. Anyway.. I had grand plans of hooking my new genny to a transfer switch box to keep my house power up and running during outages without all the cords. Well.. this unit is 8000watts and the transfer boxes offered by HD (model number: 3028) SAYS It is for up to 7500watts... It is too small! So here I sit.. in the woods of NH... waiting on Hurrican Irene to arrive and shut my power off for Lord knows how long. We will not have any water because our pump runs on 220 and it is directly wired into the breaker box,. I would probably have bought the smaller genny (6800 watt) instead just so I could use a transfer box. IF I had known better.... I did ask.. sales person before making the purchase... was told there would be no problem with a transfer box. :( It is a good unit so far...if you don't mind having to go outside in the rain to the barn and hook up extention cords everytime you need power , stepping over cords, and having to move them around soo you can keep the frig and freezer cold, make coffee, turn on a light etc. Still no water for a shower, flush to commode, or wash clothes :(

Good Design but NO Oil Filter
4 Star Review   By PD123 on Home Depot - Jul 27, 2011

Bought this in July 2011 to replace an older and smaller generator. Set up was a breeze. Unit started up easily. Easy to move around. Why was no oil filter designed into the unit. The owners manual recommends oil change after 20 hrs the first time, then every 100 hours. That is only 4 days of continued use. Probably a higher frequency due to no oil filter. Rigid/Subaru should have included an oil filter. If you own this unit, be sure to change oil as recommended. Also let it cool down with no load before shutting down.

Very good product.
4 Star Review   By PowerTool1 on Home Depot - Jul 11, 2011

It's a very nice product and has many features which can be used to compare with others generator out there. It starts every time when pull or crank the key. Its sine wave power output is very clean, tested it on the HP oscilloscope. Its Db was measured @76-77db, from back yard which was surrounded by 8ft wooden fence and the distance was 21 feet away, not bad for 8KW rated watt. Maintenance of this gen is very Easy. The engineers of Subaru/Robin engine+Ridgid are very wise. First, they place the spark plug in a very easy position to replace if needed. Second, carburetor's draining screw, gas tank draining valve and oil draining bolt, these locations are easy to access as well. Third, the Zero gravity. (Very nice design) There is One negative point for this Gen is; it only has "One (1) ignition key". C'mon Ridgid, it price tag is $1300.

5 Star Review   By MrPalancarrr on Home Depot - May 4, 2011

This is a well made unit, easy to move around and even has a digital load meter. We have a large power requirement on remote sites and this unit covers everything! The only negative I can find is the lack of a fuel gauge,

was happy now not so
2 Star Review   By autopainter on Home Depot - Apr 24, 2011

I use the generator daily. I was very happy with it. Powers my tools effortlessly. Have done all the maintenance recommended in the manual. Now the generator has 350 hours. It blows a ton of smoke on start hot or cold. Its burning a half a qt of oil per day. The Subaru engine is supposed to be top, but Im not so sure. I can't find the receipt and no one will help me. The engine has a 3 year warrenty. This generator hasn't even been maufactured three years yet. Thanks Rigid and Subaru. I have always bought Dewalt tools. I have had a few serviced. Never needed a receipt, always taken care of. I can assure u. I won't be making a switch to Rigid if this is the customer service I get.

Best Bang for the Buck!
5 Star Review   By PigFarmer on Home Depot - Feb 8, 2011

I bought this generator a few months ago for our farm. I felt it was an essential tool for our home and especially our animals. We sell pork and beef and market directly to our customers. Such an operation requires that we have freezers to store meat. At any given time we have around $3-$6K worth of meat in our freezers. So buying a generator is easily justified. Additionally, our water comes from our well, we have no source of water should the power go out. Last night our power went out for 11 hours. The temp dropped to about 20 F. Not super cold but enough to start freezing watering troughs and such. I have a 4 prong RV plug (the same one on the generator) mounted in my barn right next to the meter base. By simply turning off the main breaker to the street, I can plug the generator into the RV plug and supply power to my whole place. Before doing this, I flipped the breaker to my electric water heater so it wouldn't be too big of a strain on the generator. I turned the key on the generator and it fired up immediately. (Up until last night, I had only fired it up once for about 3 minutes to make sure it was working after I purchased it.) I let it warm up for a minute or two and then plugged it in. It revved up immediately to compensate for the load. Had I been thinking more clearly, I would have shut off more breakers to not work the generator too hard. That said, it did just fine! I started to review everything it was powering; 3 trough heaters, two heat lamps, 5 freezers, our kitchen fridge, 7-8 lights in the house (all with CFLs) and our 5 hp soft start well pump. Because the power had been out for an hour before I started the generator, all the freezers had warmed up enough that they all kicked on at once. Of course before I could even get back in the house, the kids had already turned on the TV, satalite, and surround sound receiver. Throughout the evening, I noticed that when the well pump kicked on it dimmed the lights for a second until the generator revved up. Once the kids were in bed and I knew we were done using water, I turned the water heater back on so I could take a hot shower in the morning. I started the generator at 6:30pm and ran it until 5:00 am the next morning without needing to refill. I don't think there is much fuel left in the tank, maybe enough for another hour or so. The construction of the generator is very well built and designed. It is easy to move around and simple enough to use. My wife normally lets me handle the power tools, but she told me that she would feel very comfortable using the generator if I wasn't around. I do have one gripe. The generator has a digital load meter. However, it only works if you are using the power panel. If you are using the RV plug like I do, there is no load meter. Other than that, it is a very solid system. The actual generator is very clean as far as the electricity is concerned. My dad has a smaller generator with a Subaru engine and has had flawless performance. I am a big fan of Subaru's small engines. They are very well built. Overall no other manufacturer can touch the quailty, wattage output, and overall value. It seems you can't go wrong with Rigid.

First Generator
5 Star Review   By angler on Home Depot - Nov 5, 2010

Set up, wired up, and fired up. It is a little louder than I expected but prior reviews noted this factor. It runs much better on high octane fuel, just like it says in the manual. I was a little worried about weight and portability. I am well over 70 and somewhat slight; the machine can be moved about without strain. The Ridgid 8000 is indeed portable. It is easy to get it up on its two wheels, it balances nicely, and the width of the wheels allows me to move it comfortably over a gravel pathway. We have outages most years, usually for shorter periods of time. I can hardly wait.

8000 WATT GENERATOR
5 Star Review   By LtCol on Home Depot - Oct 16, 2010

Unit seems rock solid. Haven't put it to a real test yet but I expect no problems. It's to bad the 25' cord they put in with the box is only ratted at 20 amp. Not enough amps to carry current to the house and kind of useless unless you plan on operating the unit through the removable panel. Overall a very solid unit that I hve no regrets buying.

generator review
5 Star Review   By remodu on Home Depot - Sep 15, 2010

ridgid makes high quality tools and this is no exception. the removable control panel and subaru engine make this a perfect choice for quality power yet you don't have exhaust smell and noice right at your working zone. a lot of thought and quality went into this generator for a reasonable price.

Powerful Generator
5 Star Review   By zaxwrit on Home Depot - Mar 25, 2010

We bought this generator in a winter power outage (love the folks at Home Depot for helping us find it) and it powered up much of our house in a pinch. In fact it's so powerful we are confident that in the next outage, probably to come this summer, we can remain comfortable and save our food in the fridge. Worth its weight in gold. It comes pretty much assembled, we were able to set it up quickly out of the box, and it comes with needed oil and gas stabilizer. You will just need the gas.

Wise purchas!
5 Star Review   By Pickyjones on Home Depot - Mar 1, 2010

At the begining of a 4 day power outage I purchased this unit and I tell you I couldn't be happier, to have chosen the Ridgid 8000w. It produced all the power needed reliably and consistantly, as if the outage never took place. In short after calling on the best electrian (John) in Orange County N.Y, this unit ran my whole house. (10 rooms as well as my garage) With a fill up you'll gain about 9 to 10 hours run time. Simply viewing the generator one would know its made to preform.

what a mess
3 Star Review   By Chev on Home Depot - Feb 28, 2010

Unit works well if it only came with a manual, store did not have manual. Electric strat up great feature, control panel went bad the following day, unit would not start regardless what mode I used. Not efficient on gas meaning either you have to have an abundance of gas containers or make 2-3 trips to gas station a day to fill tank. My unit lasted 18 hours and three fill ups before it stopped working. I returned unit and ordered a stanby system. Perhaps this unit was defective from factory, but for me it did not live up to its $1300 price tag.

OK but could be better
3 Star Review   By lowrider9367 on Home Depot - Dec 14, 2009

I recently purchased this generator to replace one that was stolen. I did not want to pay out the money for a Honda again & only get 2000w. So I decided that I would like something with a little more punch behind it for a backup power supply for the house as well as small to large job's. Thing's I like. It is very easy to move around. The zero gravity is no joke. It is very easy to start, even with the pull start this is not bad. No worries if you get caught with a dead battery. I have not removed the panel yet but this was one of the deciding feature's that helped me with my decision. This is also a safety feature. Helps keep you away from the generator for small job's that you don't want to drag out a extension cord. The fold up handle is great. Rigid is very innovative when making tool's for the guy that doesn't have a huge garage or shop to store their tool's in. I own most of rigid's portable tool's & this is one of the reason's that I see what rigid has to offer over other makes. Quality is second to none. The generator over all doesn't look nor feel like a cheap generator. Fuel gauge is a nice touch. The control panel that count's the hr's & load at any given time is nice. I have not seen this feature in a machine of this size. Typically only larger commercial & industrial model's come with these option's. Help's you keep up on the engine maintenance for those who consider thing's like that to be important. Dislikes Adding motor oil is a joke. Location is very poor. Need's an extension tube & dip stick. No auto engine idle option. It start's up & goes right to a pretty good rev. I don't like starting motor's that are cold without letting them idle a little to allow the engine temp to warm up before getting crazy. This will affect the life of any motor. In addition without the auto engine idle feature the generator is not as efficient as it could be. So when your running this generator you probably want to have a few thing's to power up because you will be paying for power that your not using. I miss my Honda that had this feature. Only one key came with the machine. (come on $1299.00) Fuel seems to leak out of the fill cap when tank is full & you tip back to move around.(I need to check for missing gasket) Generator is pretty noisy. But it's not a small generator either. Overall. This is for the guy that need's a generator for all small to heavy duty application's. This really is a nice generator that in my humble opinion only need's a couple of thing's done to it to make it virtually perfect. For the most part I am extremely happy with the purchase & would buy it over again. I hope this help's those of you who are pondering on purchasing this generator. Rigid is a trusted brand.

Great Generator, Fair Price, A Little Noisy
5 Star Review   By K98045 on Home Depot - Dec 10, 2009

I did extensive research on line before deciding to by the 8000. The selling points were a real voltage regulator, adequate power, and electric start. The Subaru engine helped too. This web site and the Ridgid web site don't have quite enough info so I called Ridgid for more. Among other things they told me that the generator has a Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of 5%. THD is a measure of the "quality" of the power put out. Many/most generators won't mention their THD. I've called some, and even their tech support doesn't have this information. However, take it from me that 5% is very, very good for a portable generator. Some generators brands that pride themselves on good quality power have a THD of 7%. I'm making a big deal about this because it is important to have good quality power for electronics. Bad power quality can fry electronics or shorten their life span significantly. The web sites also don't mention the sound level put out by the generator. Again, by calling them I found out that the level is 76 (?) db at 70 feet. This is a little high. Some of the higher priced ($2500+) generators of this wattage measure that at about 21 feet. This is noticeable. The generator is a little noisy. Hondas for instance are noticeably quieter. However, if you want something quieter with good quality power be prepared to spend the 2 or 3K. The electric start works very, very well. I started the generator several times, in weather that was 11 to 18 degrees. It started every time in less than 2 seconds. The generator appears solid and well though out. The gas fill is near the edge of the top. This makes filling it much easier. The gas take holds 8 gallons. This should be enough to last 10+ hours at a reasonable load. I have a whole house transfer switch on my house. The generator basically supplies every circuit in the entire house (BTW, don't buy a 6 or 8 circuit transfer switch). With typical electrical load I got 118 volts throughout the house. With every light in the house it stayed there. With the 220 dryer on high I got about 116. The only time the generator sounded like it was working hard was when I turned the oven on. Even then the voltage stayed just fine (slightly over what the utility power gives me). BTW, the generator comes with a 20 amp cord. However, don't be fooled. This is NOT a cord for connecting to a transfer switch. You need a 30 amp cord for that. This generator has (to me) a useless feature that allows you to detach the control panel and put it in a remote location using the supplied cord. This might be useful on a construction job site, but ...

Storm Avenger
5 Star Review   By Siegesrader on Home Depot - Sep 22, 2009

When the power fails, or I need power out of the reach of my home power source,My rigid generator is on the spot,I know that without a doubt I will be able to depend on it for years to come, it's quite and the best for the money, without a doubt ! I have recommended to a couple friends who also purchased Rigid generators with the Subaru engine .
