So far OK, but plug doesn't lock
4 Star Review   By Birder on Home Depot - Dec 11, 2012

Easy starting, lots of power in test run. But, the twistlock plug doesn't seem to lock. Anyone else have that problem. Possibly I'm not twisting hard enough ??

Best for the Money
5 Star Review   By Dennis on Home Depot - Dec 6, 2012

What sold me was the Subaru/Robin motor. Subaru claims their small engines are better then Hondas. I bought a cover for the generator and it is well cared for. It always starts with one pull and got extensive use during Sandy. I had prewired an outside twist-lock receptacle to my panel and I backfeed through a 20 amp breaker. No stransfer switch needed. Drain the fuel and carb when storing. I love it!

Loss of Power
5 Star Review   By NYDYI on Home Depot - Dec 4, 2012

The day Hurricane Sandy was approaching New York, I was driving from Detroit, but not before I stopped to pick up this generator. i will say that I wish i had been 30amp, but even with 20amp, I was able to maintain some sanity powering essentials for the duration of loss of power. Cut out on me twice...once only because I ran out of gas :-) and the other is when the oil level was below the recommened threshold. I say that is a good feature. Great product and well worth the money!

Everything We Hoped For!
5 Star Review   By JCKJ1996 on Home Depot - Nov 12, 2012

I bought this generator in November 2011 after the October snow storm that hit the northeast. I ran it 2-3 times running power tools around the yard. Hurricane Sandy hit and we lost power for eleven days. We ran the generator from 6 am till 11 pm every day for 11 days. The temperatures fluxuated from 27-58 degrees during that time. Every day it started with one pull. I would have to turn the genny off for 10 minutes around 2-4 o'clock in the afternoon and top off with about 3-5 gallons of fuel and top off the oil. The machine burned about 5-7 gallons a day depending on your output and a small amount of oil had to be added when fueling. As recommended by Subaru after an estimated run time I performed a quick oil change. The drain plugs are conveniently located so a cut off milk jug slid right under the frame to catch the used oil. Just to let everyone know what we ran off of the generator over eleven days, refrigerator, 2 tvs, 2 laptops, gaming console, microwave, 3 lights, and assorted phone and ipod chargers. This is a great unit. The Subaru motor is excellent. Everything is easily accessible. The unit comes with two owners manuals. One from Homelite and the other from Subaru.. The unit is easy to assemble. My father and neighbor bought the Husky version. There are differences even though they look alike. This unit has a heavy duty powder coated metal tank, the fuel shutoff valve is easily accessable below the tank. The Husky has a plastic tank with the fuel shutoff tucked up under the tank. For someone that has big hands its hard to get to. While helping my dad assemble the Husky version we found three loose bolts. This can happen with any machine so check everything over no matter what brand you purchase. Overall I would choose the Homelite over the Husky. It just feels and looks better built. Overall this machine did great. It exceeded our expectations. I cant give any feed back on the 240 plug and how it operated yet. We hope to wire a transfer box on the house next month.

Didn't cost a thing!!
5 Star Review   By JR1088 on Home Depot - Nov 8, 2012

I purchased this generator the day after Irene in 2011. I had no choice in the purchase as this was the only model that was delivered after the Hurricane. I set it up and easily powered all the creature comforts in my home including my refridgerator which we stocked with food a day before, internet, phones, tv, computers and lights. After the lights came back on 6 days later, I stored in my garage and forgot about it until we had two minor outages in my neighborhood and of course, Hurricane Sandy. We have been without power now for over 8 days. When I think about all the dinners and travel we would have additionally paid to survive this time, it would have exceeded the cost of the generator. A true life saver

Great solution during Sandy
5 Star Review   By Bernard on Home Depot - Nov 6, 2012

This was my first experience with a generator. Easy to get up and running and powered more than I thought it would. We used it for 7 days post-Sandy to keep the fridge going as well as the fan to our hot water heater, a space heater, some lights and the cable/internet for a tv. Only issue was that it wouldn't stay on the first time we were using it. I called the 800 number in the manual and they told me to leave the gas cap off for a while. It worked and we never had another issue. Why wouldn't that be in the "trouble shooting" section of the manual?

I purchased this generator after we lost power in 2011 during the October snow fall. We were out of power for 4 days, very inconvienient. I also had an electrician put in a transfer switch so my two fridge's, family room with TV (Direct TV was working) two furnaces, hot water heater and sump pump all on line. It was nice and comfy during the hurricane Sandy. Ran it for 3 days and didn't use a lot of gas, probably around 6-7 gals. Also turned off at night when we went to bed, refers stayed cold. Only issue I have is how to change the oil, Not a lot of info in instructions.

Ran Well But The Frame Cracked
2 Star Review   By Mike on Home Depot - Nov 4, 2012

I purchased this generator right before Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast.I ran it 4 straight days without a problem.I was preparing it for storage and went to change the oil and noticed the frame had broken at the gas tank support.Closer inspection I noticed that the support was made of a thin gauge metal.Since it was supporting the fuel tank,I feel it should have been a bit sturdier.I would assume that the stress of the engine vibration caused this break.I returned it for a full refund and will now purchase an American made generator.

Great Purchase, got us through Sandy!
4 Star Review   By TheatreMama on Home Depot - Nov 4, 2012

Have not had for long but boy was I happy with this purchase. Frankly, in the hours before Sandy, this was the only model available but the reviews I read were right on. I was nervous about using a generator as I had no experience with them at all. But this was a breeze to assemble and easy to start. Worked like a charm! The only drawbacks are the position of the oil tank is awkward to fill and it is noisy. But then again, most generators are noisy. Great price too.

This generator is a great value and you won't be disappointed.
5 Star Review   By Kevin on Home Depot - Nov 3, 2012

I purchased this generator in anticipation of losing power from Hurricane Irene last year. This would not have been my first choice since it has 20 amp outlet rather than a 30 amp but it was all HD had in stock at the time. So far, it has seen me through several power outages flawlessly lasting from 1-7 days... hurricane Sandy being the most recent. With this generator I am able to run my refrigerators, well and sump pumps, furnace, dishwasher, microwave oven as well as enough lights to not need candles or lanterns. I also installed a transfer switch at my panel so I can power all these circuits without the need for extension cords. I purchased the Reliance transfer switch from HD and it is very simple to install yourself. It comes with an installation DVD, and I'm not an electrician. With 5000 watts and 6250 surge watts, I can't run everything at once but I can run most everything concurrently. This generator comes with a Subaru engine that is quiet compared to other engines this size. The engine runs smoothly, is easy to start, easy to change the oil and will last a very long time. The gas tank holds 5 gallons and will run about 12 hours per tank the way I use it. The only drawback is the fuel tank doesn't have a gas gauge built into the cap. All things considered, that is a minor inconvenience. I am very happy with this purchase and would recommend this generator to anyone.

A lifesaver
5 Star Review   By Gustafson on Home Depot - Nov 3, 2012

We got the last generator the day after Irene at our local Home Depot. We were without power for a week that time and this generator ran our fridge, freezer, toaster oven, lights, computers and tvs. Now during Sandy we have been without power for 6 days and no resolution in site. The generator is running 24/7 keeping us afloat. It uses about 10 gallons a day but it is way better than the alternative. We wondered if we would ever use it again after Irene and we are so glad we kept it. And to be honest, we didn't even take care of it all that well. After a year in the shed with no oil change and gas in the tank (I know, I know) it started on the second pull. Here's hoping we don't need it next year.

Good value, powered all essentials, name brand engine, good fuel economy
4 Star Review   By CTBikeRider on Home Depot - Oct 31, 2012

I purchased this unit in a pinch for Hurricane Sandy. Name brand Subaru engine and advisement from HD employees that unit was of mid-range quality led to purchase of one of the six remaining in the store. Plugged into 120/240 dedicated generator port, switched on the breaker and this unit powered my well pump, oil burner (which also heats water), TV, PC's, lights, hair dryer, and microwave (not all on at the same time) without issue. I am pleased with the amount of output. I am also pleased with the fuel consumption. The box advises is 6.5 gal. tank. I was only able to get maybe 4.5 gal. in the tank at recommended levels. It ran for 6 hours and only used half the tank, so estimates of 12 hours on one tank are accurate. The Subaru engine does have an occaisional hiccup, even with fresh 87 oct. fuel with stabilizer added, and is not as smooth as I would want. There is also no hour meter or voltage indicator which is why I rated only average quality. If it at least had an hour meter, that would have earned it a 'Good' rating. Some complained about the location of the wheels, but is not an issue for me (in/out of garage door) and provides nice balance for portability. It was missing 'washers' for the wheel installation, but I made my own from spares. They have also fixed prior reported issues of poor handle design. It is solid, factory installed, and never buckled on me as in prior reviews as it has a locking feature now. It runs quiet enough, but is not as quiet as other brands. This is an excellent value, with 5000 constant watts, name brand engine, and easy portability for the price.

Barely used so far but seems very capable
4 Star Review   By Martin on Home Depot - Oct 30, 2012

I bought one post-Irene and it literally sat unopened for over a year. With Sandy approaching, I unboxed, assembled, and tried to get it running but had a very difficult time starting the engine. Turned out to be a blockage in the fuel-line between the tank and gas filter; once cleared, the engine runs very smoothly and usually starts on the 2nd pull w/full choke. Our power failed 10/29 at 11:30PM and initially I ran just a sump-pump and kitchen refrigerator and was about to connect our TV and some light-fixtures when our service was restored (incredible considering how bad this storm was!). Total run was under an hour... this time. But it ran smoothly and barely flinched when a load was applied. The engine seems to be of high quality and though it's not as quiet as Honda-powered gens I've seen, it isn't obnoxiously loud either. Like others have noted though it's a bit ungainly to move because of the frame design (wheels on the sides). Also, the Run/Stop switch could be better labeled. Pretty happy with it overall: I just hope it'll last for a long time.

Generator
5 Star Review   By BTig on Home Depot - Oct 30, 2012

The generator works great! I bought the generator about a year and a half ago from HD second hand. Some time passed where I did not need it, but when I did it worked great I ran my fridge, lights, and computers, my neighbors fridge and lights, and my other neighbors fridge. I ran it on and off for two-three days and used about 6-10 gal of gas. However, I do keep 10 gal of gas in my shed for the just in cases storm that knocks out my power since my lines are behind my house...and I kept about 4-6 gal of gas in the generator......I found out that is a no no. I guess its the ethanal in the fuel, but the rubber gasket that goes from the fuel tank to the on-off switch rotted and cracked and I had to drain the gas out of the tank. I called Homelite...(they make the Husky generator) and they politely mailed me a replacement gasket and some extras. Of in general, I am very very happy.

best purchase..
5 Star Review   By Kusib on Home Depot - Oct 30, 2012

I ordered 2 of these units. One for myself and one for my neighbor during an outage we had before Irene in 2011. Now here we are in the wake of Sandy and both generators start on the first pull and provide plenty of power to support our households. I also loaned my unit out last year to a few other families on different occasions when there power was out. This is by far one of the best purchases a home owner could make to ensure you home and family are prepared. And the Subaru engine is TOP NOTCH..

Bought after Irene in 2011 and used for about an before power was restored. In the shed it went till tonight. A lil over a year latter here comes Sandy. After topping off the fuel and two pulls of the start cord the lites were back on . Have it wired thru a transfer switch into the house wiring and it doesn't skip a beat. Water pump furnace dishwasher lites two fridges all running. This is a great value for the reliability and power output. Its even what powered this review.

Name Changed from "Husky" to "Homelite"
4 Star Review   By embryodad on Home Depot - Jul 31, 2012

I went specifically to my local store to purchase the "Husky" brand Gen Set, but was told that the "New Name' has been changed to "Homelite"...? I did purchase the Unit, and wheel kit and assembly was easy and with Simple Tools. Frame is heavy duty and well designed. After adding engine oil...a 1/3 easy-pull of the recoil starter rope started the engine easily. After 5 minute running..a connected load added to the Gen Set provided smooth operation and output. Output recepticles have no on/off switches; so I will add my own external switches as needed. As far as what it does for the price...there is no room to complain! A fuel level gauge would be a plus, but as it is what it is, is what it is! The BIG Plus, is the Subaru Engine. A quality engine as per other reviews and owners experience. A on/off fuel valve and in line filter is a plus also! S M I L E S from the purchase!

Like that the product includes many outlets, large fuel tank, and wheels and handle.
4 Star Review   By clgva on Home Depot - Jul 31, 2012

The generator performed flawlessly during two recent power outages. While the generator has great features (large fuel tank, plently of outlets, wheeels and handle), I would have preferred the wheels and handle to be oriented front to back rather than side to side.

I have powered a garden well with the generator for the summer and it has worked like a charm. However I did move it for another use and then couldn't get it started. Is there an override for the automatic low oil shut down? Don't know if that's the problem but it had happened with another brand

Great for power outages
5 Star Review   By McDuff on Home Depot - Jul 9, 2012

Purchased this when it went on sale after a hurricane caused us to loose power for more then a day. Since then I have used it for several small power outages of around 4 hours each, but lately we had a storm that took out power for much of area for upto a week. Our power was out for about 18 hours, but the generator then went to help out some family staying at a campground. At home the generator is large enough to power my well pump, fridge, chest freezer, lights, a 42" TV and DVD player for the kids, and we have even done the microwave or toaster or coffee maker as well, haven't tried anything beyond that but haven't needed to. After we got our power back I sent the generator to help out family. It powered 2 campers (12v charging systems, fridge, lights, one had electric water heater). Both were also able to run the air cond as well but fuel consumption went up drastically. If the AC was off they were also able to charge a golf cart. Also ran a cord to a third camper to run a couple of fans. Ran for them for three days before they got power back. Works great just for the purpose i got it.

Homelite not Husky
5 Star Review   By doug on Home Depot - Jul 2, 2012

While I spent half the night last Sept. bailing my sump pump after we lost power, my wife went to Home depot and brought this model home. I was skeptical, but tired of bailing water. It worked fine for the three hours till the power kicked back in. Fast forward to this past weekend. We lost power for two days. This little generator produced wonderfully. I had a couple of fans, refigerator, TV, FiOS at my house hooked up. I let my neighbor hook up their fridge and a fan, and I never overloaded it. It ran continuously for 24 hrs. I did replace the oil after 24+ hours. If anything, the location of the oil drain was not the best design, but easily overcome with a funnel.

Homelite not Husky
4 Star Review   By riccanet on Home Depot - May 29, 2012

The unit ran on the first try and tested fine for the servers it will power. Assembly was fairly easy. As someone else pointed out, this unit will not roll through a standard door. You have to turn it sideways and drag it out. Could be an issue when filled with gas. This unit is not a Husky, but it does have the same engine. I gave it 4 stars because it was advertised incorrectly and its a pain to get through a door.

Great product---make sure everything is there before you leave!!
4 Star Review   By Zcarguy on Home Depot - Apr 20, 2012

The generator performs marvelously, starts easily, etc. unfortunately, when I opened the box (sealed with tape and with plastic straps going around the box) the axles, feet and hardware were missing. I called the number in the manual and the person on the phone was friendly and agreed to send the missing parts. One month later I got a box in the mail with half the parts. I called once more and again they agreed to send what I was still lacking. Here I am three weeks later waiting and having to carry this heavy thing every time I use it.

I never even used a generator untill April of 2011. On the second day of our power being out I went searching. I checked every Lowes and Home Depot in town and everyone was out of everything. I had to go to the next town and this was all they had unless I wanted to pay over a grand. I set the thing up in the dark with a flashlight. It ran 2 fridges, a large deep freezer, 50 inch tv, 3 lights, dvd player, and the washer and dryer. I ran out of extension cords, I was trying to see how much was too much. Needless to say I felt like a king on my street. The power was out for a total of 5 days and I never had the first problem. I don't care if I never use it again, it was worth every penny.

Keeps the house running when the power is out!
5 Star Review   By JTS1 on Home Depot - Mar 8, 2012

Bought this generator after numerous power outages. With the 220 plugged into the house, I can run 2 refrigerators, 1 deep freeze, the stove and the lights and electronic devices I need! I have used it 5 times in the past year and a half and am very satisfied with it. It is a little noisy but I have recently rigged an extra 20 ft of extension cord to move the generator further away from the house, the next time the power goes out.

Homelight is not a Husky
3 Star Review   By Patrick on Home Depot - Mar 6, 2012

Wanted a Husky generator, but the thing is a Homelight. For some reason Home Depot equates an excellent quality generator, such as a Husky, with a mediocre Homelite. At least they both have the Subaru engine, Homelight has that rustable metal gas tank. Can't comment on it's performance untill we suffer another disaster.

AVOID HOMELITE!
1 Star Review   By Luke on Home Depot - Feb 22, 2012

Like other buyers, I read the reviews on the HD website prior to making the purchase at my local HD. One review that was mentioned twice by buyers indicated the generator was missing parts right out of the box and their frustration when dealing with Homelite customer service. I purchased the item anyway figuring that it could not be a common issue. Was I mistaken. The generator was missing the front supports and ALL the hardware. When I called Homelite customer service I was greeted by a rep who didn't seem to care. When I questioned her as to how Homelite could allow items to leave their factory with missing parts, she became annoyed and told me that the missing parts would be sent to me within 7 to 10 days. That's it. Very dissatisfied and I hope HD reconsiders offering Homelite products to their customers in the future.

Not used yet but satisfied so far in Georgia
4 Star Review   By HappyinGeorgia on Home Depot - Feb 21, 2012

Well it fired up out of the box. I'm waiting to see how well this Subaru engine holds up over time . Haven't seen many articles on the engine but time will tell. Noisy but not bad considering. For the price and if i don't use the warranty anytime soon, then I'll be happy with this generator. Great for around the house and camping.** For the guy that complained about the star bolts for the brackets , if all that is all you have then you have no complaints and should be happy with this generator. ** yes I was missing one washer for the wheel Axial.

Good value for the price
5 Star Review   By DAofMA on Home Depot - Feb 15, 2012

Bought this generator in Dec. 2011, after being without power for 3 days following the Halloween snow storm here in northeast. I've lost power for multiple days before, and having no water (have well water) and no heat gets old after 24 hrs. So I decided never to be at the mercy of National Grid utility power company again. The Husky unit wasn't my first unit of choice, but the price was very fair and the Subaru engine made it an easy choice. Plus HD had it in stock. The handle being on the long side does look strange, but for me isn't a problem as the generator is kept in an outdoor shed. I don't understand the negative reviews I see on this unit. This generator is solidly built, is easy to maneuver, starts on the 1st or 2nd pull, and runs very smoothly. I had an electrician install an Interlockit generator connection kit to my service panel to safely bring power into my house and am now ready for an outage. Very good generator with more than enough output to power the essentials during an outage. Very satisfied with this unit (and the Interlockit generator connector setup).

Great generator except for
4 Star Review   By Outdoor14 on Home Depot - Jan 7, 2012

This is an easy starting generator providing no problem operation and is pretty quiet to boot. I have owned several generators costing much more that I have run into the ground on residential home building jobs. The two problems with the Husky unit are just poor design and do not effect operation. One problem it that the manual says the gas tank holds six gallons when it only holds five and the wheels are installed on the width which will not fit through a 3" 0" door.

missing parts not fully assembled
3 Star Review   By bob123 on Home Depot - Dec 28, 2011

Unit received was a homelite not a husky as advertised. On initial set up gas line was not attached with no mention of this in manual. Gas leaked out on my garage floor. Washers for wheels and lock washers were missing with 20 minutes on phone with customer service. Hopefully long term results will be better. Will recommend for now. Initially bought for expected quality of subaru engine.

Easy to assemble, excellent quality and workmanship, value priced and worked the first time it was started!
5 Star Review   By Gageman on Home Depot - Dec 27, 2011

This product is well built, sturdy and easy to assemble and handle. I would rate it a five star in spite of missing 4 washers which were immediately replaced at the local Home Depot. Instructions are written in good understandable English, easy to follow and well illustrated. It was recommended that two people assemble it. I had no problem doing it all by myself. Upon filling the appropriate fluids and switching the switch to ON, the unit started on the very first attempt. I would highly recommend it and Home Depot to anyone. I am a very satisfied customer. Enough power for 2000 sq foot home, Fast starting,Ease of operation
5 Star Review   By Handyman on Home Depot - Dec 21, 2011

Bought this unit right after Irene. Got it home and the power came back on that day. Did not use it untill the Halloween storm where power was out all over our neighborhood. I plugged in 2 neighbors so they could have some power as well and the unit ran great for 2 days. I just finished hooking it up to a Reliance Control 6 circuit transfer switch. After testing all the circuits this unit has enough power to run almost everything in my home with plenty of power to spare. Now we are ready for anything mother nature will dish out.

Efficient and non-handy person friendly.
4 Star Review   By Feli12 on Home Depot - Dec 6, 2011

I ordered this generator online after the four-day power outage in NJ. Easy assembly (wheels and support), more than 4 outlets and not very noisy. As other customers, I did not receive some knots and washers for the assembly and when I contacted customer service, I was told that it would be delivered in 15 business days. Anyway, I already used it after a 4-hour black out and we did not even realize that the whole block was without power. Tip: if you don't use all the gasoline, just drain it out before storage. If you don't do so, the engine can be damaged and the generator dead (it happened to a neighbor).

5 Star Review   By Justrich1 on Home Depot - Dec 6, 2011

I was upset when i got the package and it didn't say husky brand on it. It was labeled HomeLite, but after calling Home Depot they explained that the Husky brand is a sub-product of HomeLite. The Generator works well, I haven't had an event or storm to use it yet but i have tested it when i received it. It is very quiet and easy to use.

Very Poor Quality
1 Star Review   By JRD78 on Home Depot - Dec 5, 2011

Assembled it on the Sunday night after the 10/28 snowstorm. The next morning, four bolts were laying on the ground; remaining bolts were loose. Apparently they forgot to tell the idiot screwing it together to use a wrench. The generator stalls at least once a day. It leaks oil. The Twist-lock plug won't lock. Homelite customer service is worthless - compels you to take it to a service center for repair at least 30 miles away. Unless you are desparate and it is the only one available, but something else.

Do not buy this product
1 Star Review   By energywiz on Home Depot - Nov 28, 2011

The unit is actually sold by Homelite, not sure where the "Husky" name comes in. It arrived (Nov. 2011) missing the washers needed to mount the wheels, as mentioned by other (apparently much earlier) reviews. Homelite cust. svc. was terrible: 20 minutes on hold (no exaggeration), couldn't ID their own model number, and then tells me it will take 10-14 days to get the parts because they have to order them from Gardner Inc. I went to several hardware stores, but none could provide the 1" flat washers with 5/8" hole. So now the unit sits outside, blocking access to my porch on a skid because I can't move it (weighs ~180 lbs) without first attaching the wheels. To send a message regarding this ongoing poor quality control, buy somebody else's generator!

After assembly, filling with some gasoline and filling the oil, I followed the starting instructoins and the machine started on the 1st pull. It is about as loud as my lawn mower but I can live with that. Have not used it with a load yet so I cannot comment on the performance.

Very impressed
5 Star Review   By Gocorona on Home Depot - Nov 15, 2011

I had to purchase a generator after a severe wind storm. After researching and finding the good reviews for this one, I picked one up in my local store. It is rare that I give a product five stars, but I was really impressed with the quality and ease of use of the product. During the entire outage, I used this generator to power my fridge, 2 computers, multiple lamps, an electric heater, microwave, and the 240v outlet to provide power to my well pump and pressure tank. Not a single problem. Looking forward to having this puppy around for a long time.

I recently purchased this generator when we had a Halloween snow storm which knocked out our power. The generator came easy to unpack and start. All u needed to do is put wheels on and front block things to help the generator sit level. While everyone else had no electric I was sitting in the warmth of my house watching TV. This generator powers my whole house from oil burner, water pump, lights, refrigerators, microwaves etc. When properly hooked up all u need is one cord to power ur whole house

5 Star Review   By TBone on Home Depot - Nov 12, 2011

Bought a Husky very similiar to this with the Subaru engine during the ice storm of 2008 and have used it several times since. The specs are basically the same and it appears to just be the current model. It has run approx 13 days total with out skipping a beat over the last 3 years. Keep the oil changed and fresh and you will have years of reliability out if it. Subaru quality and engineering are top notch!

5 Star Review   By Wilmar on Home Depot - Nov 9, 2011

Great value for the money...we've only used it a few times and it has operated very well. Easy to start and is much quieter than any other generator we've used. The only complaint we have is that it would be very helpful if it had a fuel gauge. It's sort of a guessing game with when we need to refill. Other than that great product.

5000 watt Gasoline power generator
4 Star Review   By Bill on Home Depot - Nov 9, 2011

Since it has a "SUBARU" engine I purchased this product. Only draw back is that the position of wheels. It is not practical and storage is a bit of a problem if one does not have a garage. Its very easy to assemble and instructions are easy to follow. so far I am happy with it.

Perfect! Ran flawless!
5 Star Review   By TomS on Home Depot - Nov 9, 2011

Bought this during power outage from Irene. Easy to setup, which is basically just installing the wheels. It has started on first pull every time. It provides power for the whole house including fridge, furnace and septic pump. Not the stove or dryer. It seems to have more power than a previous Coleman 5000 watt generator. Fuel usage was about 9 gallons for morning and evening runs during three days of no power due to the snow storm here in CT. The Subaru engine runs great. Highly recommended.

Lifesaver after recent Halloween Storm!!
4 Star Review   By Jfromny on Home Depot - Nov 4, 2011

Purchased this unit a month ago during the calm, then sat night lost electric at the house. I have to say, this was a lifesaver and best investment i ever purchased! At a full tank, this unit powered my refridgerator, 1 light, a 1500 watt space heater, laptop computer, 52" Tv , cable box and internet box for 12 hours. Always make sure you fill it up to the top (6 gallons), Although noisy like MOST gas generators, this puppy was on for 4 days straight! Im going to change the oil as it says on the maintenance log after 20 hours of operation.

Up and Running in 15 minutes
5 Star Review   By SLScottXNY on Home Depot - Nov 2, 2011

Just got this to recover from the October snow storm. Set up was very easy - only had to install wheels and foot supports - but as others have notices not all parts mentioned in quick start guide were found - but I don't think those extra washers are needed. Started quickly - loud as heck but it's working great. I will caution anyone picking it up at the store it is very very heavy to get in and out of the car.

Got hit in the surprize snow storm 10/29/2011 and totally lost power. PSE&G's projected repair time came and went and my basement was flooding. I was able to find this generator in a Home Depot in PA, this model was all they had left. After asking a few set up questions, got it loaded on my truck and made it home. I was able to get the generator off my truck by my self, so it was not too heavey for one person to manage. Was also able to get it unpacked and up and running with just the help of a flash light. Insallation directions and operation directions were pretty easy and clear. It ran my sump pump and full freezer with out a problem, a pretty GOOD product all the way around!!

3 Star Review   By RAgrawal on Home Depot - Oct 29, 2011

We bought this generator in response to Irene and to be ready for the next storm ( which could be this weekend). We were attracted to this product for its generation capacity and the Subaru Engine. The assembly was relatively straight forward - although several parts ( washers) were missing that I had to go out and buy. Home Depot was quite considerate about this and provided us a gift certificate as compensation. I was able to get the generator going with a couple of pulls and was able to check out the electrical outputs. Every thing checked out and met our expectation.

Product met all expectations but one glaring one!
4 Star Review   Home Depot

Bought this Husky 5K Generator (10-17-11) just as Hurricane season started. ($649.00 + tax @ Home Depot) Pros; Easy to set up and started on first pull. This one replaces my old Generator that finally died. Subaru Engine a good selection. Wheels a plus. I really like this generator. Cons; Generator is too wide for standard 36" door since most of them cannot open to fullest under normal conditions. The big problem I encountered was the damnable Neutral grounded set up.( I do realize this is a Code requirement but alternative for Transfer switch should be available.) The company (Husky) was very cavalier in their response to my questions re; the problem with Neutral grounded Generator being hooked up to a Reliance 6 circuit Transfer switch. They told me to hire an Electrician (500-1000$$$) This is not satisfactory from a consumers point of view. The company(Husky) should have had a switch installed on the Generator to switch from bonded Neutral to floating Neutral, at least. As a retired Business Guy I am amazed at the uninterested response/attitude. from Husky. As an aside; I really do like this Generator but the extra expense for an Electrician is something the Husky company could have avoided for Customers by installing an inexpensive switch or at least warned potential buyers before the purchase of the large extra installation cost. Still would recommend but with reservations.

Pretty nice unit
5 Star Review   By MasterEE on Home Depot - Oct 4, 2011

I haven't yet had the opportunity to run the generator (a good thing!) but I plan a test run hopefully this weekend. I wired up everything last weekend so it should be good to go. The unit itself is well built, easy to maneuver and has convenience outlets right on it if one decides to use the "extension cord method" of energizing portions of their house or what have you. It has one L14-20 outlet for 120/240 and 2 standard NEMA 120 outlets. 5000 watts with a Subaru engine...can't beat it. If nothing else, it's an insurance policy against future outages!

It would be nice if the receptacles were broken into more circuits (unit comes with only 2 circuits). The 240/120V receptacle should be on a different circuit than one of the 120V receptacles. Seems to be good quality. Still in testing phase. Wheels are very good. Easy to assemble. To add oil, I needed to tip unit. Started on first pull. Overall I am satisfied.

bought 4 yrs ago (on sale for $350 at HD), started, run for 10 min, shut down, drained. During Irene 8/11, started from 3 pulls and run for 40 hrs stopping only for the 1st oil change. Perfect. 5 gal per 24 hrs at about 1.5 kWh (2 sumps, 4 fridges and dozen of cfl lights +tv/dvd). Does it feel nice when you watch a TV+dvd and everybody around are going to bed with their candles? Powered my neighbors' pumps and fridges too... Getting another one for my rental. Loud? Well, pay another $2-3k for a quieter one. I say it is a perfect balance of price, performance, power and loudness. Thank you HD and Subary

Great Generator for the Price
5 Star Review   By MikeS on Home Depot - Sep 13, 2011

Pros - Subaru engine; 4-120V and 1-240V outlets; low oil shutoff protection; very good design, easy to maneuver; solid tires, will not go flat; very easy to start; has fuel filter Cons - loud; runs full speed, even with no load; no oil filter Of course, adding idle speed control, oil filter and a quieter muffler would have increased the cost; you get what you pay for. It is a 5,000-watt generator, so it will support a 5,000-watt load, enough said.

Fine if you're in a pinch, but you can do better
3 Star Review   By Armie on Home Depot - Sep 4, 2011

Like many here, I bought this generator under the duress of hurricane Irene. While it got me through, I landed up returning it. Here's what I found. Set up There was absolutely no issues setting this guy up. I tore the box apart at the sides as it mentioned, put the feet and wheels on, added oil and gas and started it on the first pull. It's not all that quiet, but that's to be expected for $599. Power It worked as expected. It ran both our fridge and freezer and our neighbor's fridge across the street with an extension chord. It also ran an outlet that had a printer, cable router box and computer router attached to it. Finally, it also ran a tv, cable box and microwave. When the microwave ran, the generator worked a little harder, but overall it had no problems handling it all. Design Here's where we start running into problems. The generator is rectangular. The wheels are on the wide end. WHY??? Because they somehow decided that it made sense to do it this way, you simply can not wheel this unit through any standard open door. You'll have to get it to the door then get two people to lift it through the entry way. It would have taken all of five seconds for an engineer to say, "Wait, the wheels are on the wrong side. I can't wheel this through any doorways without help!" How this slipped by is beyond me. Next, the locking arm is just pure garbage. It consists of a spring loaded pin, a washer and a cotter pin (or R-pin) holding it. Bottom line, the pin doesn't snap back all the way into the arm and it therefore continually unlocks (at least the one I had). You could probably solve the problem by adding an extra washer or two on the end with the R-pin, but again, this is inexcusable. Sure, it's not a $2000 generator, but the arm should lock! It unlocked on me about five times while trying to wheel it into my garage, a few times almost crashing into my shins! Finally, this generator is supposed to have a six gallon tank. Says so even on the box, so it's not home depot's fault. Bottom line, it only has a 5 gallon tank. I was surprised when my 5 gallon gas can filled it up near the top. I took it back and got the Ridgid 6800 watt generator instead.

Very good gen
5 Star Review   By JerseyDudePainFromIrene on Home Depot - Sep 1, 2011

i don't know about you but i was hit by irene like many on the east coast. i got a chance to use this as my neighbor didn't know how to set it up as her husband was overseas. anyway, setting up took 10-15 minutes (rip off card board box - don't bother lifting 160 pounds out of box by yourself, snap in wheels w/pins, bolting in two front pegs). the handle was preset and all i had to do was lift it into place. i added the oil which was included. i liked the horizontal design as it made it easy to add the oil since all i had to do was pivot it which took a little balancing but manageable. i added unleaded gas (says rt on cap w/meter), open gas valve, put on choke and pull the chord and it started rt up. i used 4 120v extension chords. 1 chord went to my house running the sump pump, refrigerator, tv/dvd, 2 floor standing fluorescence lamp. the second chord went to the first neighbor running her sump pump. the third extension chord ran my second neighbor fridge/tv/light and the same with my third neighbor. i am not saying that this gen powered all 4 houses. i am only saying the essential above. all in all, we are all very happy. i am going back to hd to pick one up for myself today. on the side note, all the short givings of the previous low review were resolved with the one that i used such as the front anchor support now utilize a hex bolt rather than the star. it would have been nice if husky provided the L shaped hex w/box but i found one laying around. i agree with some others that this unit is loud and i had to shut it off when we all went to sleep. then again, all of my neighbors generators are loud and most ran all night. i hadn't been lucky enough to be near any quiet gen to compare and feel the quiet ones are kinda rare. another comment is that i compare this to honda's web site and this tend to be 1/3 price less than the honda. the comparable 5000 watts honda were going for $2.4K and the dealer was asking for $3.2K maybe due to supply and demand - who knows. i feel that this gen can power the whole house and am considering hiring an electrician to put in a switch box. i know it is only rated at 25 amps rather than 30 compare to the 8000 watts one. however, this one is more than i need. if you are picky, you might think about diesel as it generate more torque and last longer. i also checked out natural gas gen in addition to diesel. choices are good so happy shopping.

excellent generator for the price
5 Star Review   By sean on Home Depot - Sep 1, 2011

I bought this generator a few days before hurricane Irene. I didn't know much about the Husky name as far as generators go but I read some positive reviews about the Subaru engine, besides it was the only one available. I had my electrician install a 20 amp plug in my circuit panel. On Sunday evening around 7 we lost power. I quickly took it out if the box. I didn't even bother to put the wheels or feet on. I added the quart of oil that came with it,filled the gas and it started on the first pull. I ran the generator for three days straight with no problems. It had enough power for two refridgerators, one freezer, all the lights I could possible need,2 fans, one tv,water heater with electronic pilot, and even the dishwasher. The generator ran for 10-12 hours on one tank of gas. I would recommend this generator to anyone looking for a inexpensive reliable power source.

starting
4 Star Review   Home Depot

I tried to start this unit several times to no avail. I finally got my son over and he put the choke on full. I told him the manual said to leave the choke in the run position if the engine is hot or the temp is above 50. It was 97 and it started on the first pull with the choke on full. Fortunately I haven't had to use the generator for power yet.

Wish I had more time to do a little research first
3 Star Review   By myreview on Home Depot - Aug 31, 2011

Bought after the Irene Hurricane. Just happen to show up at HD after they delivered a new batch. Worked fine on the first pull then almost a disaster. Went to move it over a few feet and the handle unlocked and the generator collapsed back towards the ground. This is a very poorly designed handle. It is too loose with a washer and cotter pin set up and easy slips out of lock. Had to add several more washers to keep the handle lock tight. Could have been injury here. The generator ran okay for two days straight. It does have a miss or hiccup every couple minutes or so and I am not sure if that is normal or a problem. I looked for an adjustment and to see if the gas cap was allowing air and all seemed normal. Rubber electrical panel covers are useless and do not cover receptacles properly, don’t know why they bothered to even add them since they are useless. This is a very loud generator so put it on the opposite side of your house that the bedrooms are or you will not sleep at night. Generator rattles and shakes with all the cotter pin connections and clicks loudly near the pull handle. Exhaust pipe does little to muffle sound. Manual is very thin and provides limited information. Ran all the normal wattage items in the house. Frig, cable box, TV, computers, Fios, lights, fish pond pump, fans without problem. Would have liked to have used it to power my well pump. I have not tried it on the pump because pump is set up for 30 amps and the generator is only 25 amps and it will have to be added using a transfer switch at the electrical panel unless I cared to rig it at the pump panel box and void my homeowners insurance which I did not. If I had more time, instead of an emergency purchase, I would have gone with 7000 watt, 30 amp which would run a 10 circuit transfer switch just fine. Will sell this before next big storm and meanwhile tie in a new 7000 amp generator with transfer switch and get rid of all five power cords and power strips that are strung all over the house.

More than we wanted to spend but glad we did.
5 Star Review   By lcsonbrg on Home Depot - Aug 30, 2011

I picked this generator up to keep the waterproofing system sump pump running in anticipation of Irene knocking out the power. Of course because we got it, we lucked out and didn't need it. I didn't want to get one this big but it was the smallest one they had left and I am very glad I did! I installed this with the Reliance Pro-Tran transfer switch with remote plug before the storm hit and am able to run 6 circuts in the house. The unit started right up on the 1st pull. We ran the generator for 2 hours and it ran the furnace, sump, frig, 10,000 BTU A/C, 36" standard TV as well as another 300 or so watts of lights in four rooms and was still only drawing about 30-40% of the rating and handled all the start up surges with no problems. The only thing I have found to complain about is the 2 - 5/8" washers for the wheels were missing from the box. Not a biggie as I had some on hand.

Best money i have spent in a long time...
5 Star Review   By David on Home Depot - Aug 30, 2011

Bought this the Friday before Irene. Was a little concerned having never owned anything with a Suburu engine. Could not be happier with the generator so far. Has been running for 72 hours straight now with no issues. Am currently running 3 ceiling fans, window fan, chest freezer, side by side fridge/freezer, 3 lamps, computer, 2 cell phones charging, well pump, air handler on the ac and internet charger. And still not bogging down. Am also able to heat up my 80 gallon hot water heater with some of the other things turned off. Great buy!

After Hurricane Irene I used this to run two refrigerators and our travel trailer. Ran the A/C unit no problem. Started first pull. Unit is a bit loud but very powerful. I am going to install a transfer switch and plug for this unit.

Very Good Equipment for the Price
5 Star Review   By Mickey on Home Depot - Aug 24, 2011

We just went through a couple of days in Puerto Rico without electrical power due to Hurricane Irene and it worked well, runs smooth, turns on easily and is much quieter than I expected. It ran our fridge, TV and DVR along with a light and laptop with now problems. I'm pleased with this purchase so far.

Great for the money
5 Star Review   By printslve on Home Depot - Jul 31, 2011

I used this generator twice using cords run thru the house. Starts easily and ran smoothly for hours. I recently had an electrician hook up a connection so I can disconnect from utility company and run the generator directly into my breaker box. Runs fridge, tv, furnace, lights etc. No problem. Cant run a dryer or water heater, but I sure feel better having this generator sitting in my garage.

Excellent Generator
5 Star Review   By Lane on Home Depot - Jul 24, 2011

Purchased this unit for $649 in April after the tornadoes that ripped through Alabama. My local Home depot received 120 of these units that morning and I bought one of the last 3 around 4pm. My in-laws were without power for several days after the storms. I loaned them my Husky Generator and it worked very well. It ran a freezer, two refrigerators, lights etc. Ran for 12 hours on tank of gas. The power came back on after the first tank. I wired my load center so that I can power my entire house if I'm ever without power.

Good Unit But Engineering Lacks Common Sense
3 Star Review   By soldbydon on Home Depot - Mar 16, 2011

Like many people, I bought this in the midst of a storm to get my home some emergency power. What sold me was the anticipated better performance of the Subaru engine over the Briggs found on a similar model at the same price, and this is the only model that the local store received for the emergency sales. But here are the design flaws you'll want to consider. First, the engineers have you installing the wheels that need a star-bit tool (that they don't supply) and I'll bet you don't have one handy. The rest of the industry uses Allen keys and usually supplies them free. During a power outage storm is not the time to go find a tool you likely don't own. Second, the handle is mounted on the wide side, not the narrow end. Yes, this gives the unit better balance when transporting, but the problem is that when your overhead garage door wont open due to the power outage, you'll have difficulty getting this generator out the garage passenger door since the wheels are mounted on the wrong side. Third, the gas tanks is not the 6 gallon one in the picture with a standard plastic cap, it's a 5 gallon one with a skinny metal cap that can't be retrofitted with a cap having a built-in gas gauge. Wouldn't you like to know if you are running low on gas? Opening the cap with the unit running to check the level can be dangerous! And fourth, the unit has a 20 amp configuration limit on the twist-lock 220VAC receptacle but the unit should be able to put out 30 amps per the specs. That is compounded by the problem that Home Depot does not sell a 20 amp plug-in box you can mount on your house. Instead what they sell are 30 amp boxes (only) that wont fit the 20 amp generator cord. Therefore you have to buy a 20 amp cord and you cut off the receptacle end and they do sell a 30 amp twist lock receptacle to mate up to the box - but the receptacle alone is a ridiculous $40! Fortunately I found one online for $10. By having to use 30 amp matching components over 20 amp, your accessories cost to plug this generator into your home more than doubles in price. Since Husky is exclusive to Home Depot, maybe someone will think this through that the components don't easily mate up, and the consumer incures exceptional cost as a result. And during a storm emergency, you don't have time for all the hassles.

I bought this generator and finaly got it after 3 weeks. When I tried it, it wouldnt even run right. It was the worst investment I ever bought. I do not reccoment this to anyone. If you look at this generator, turn around and pass it up.

Excellent for the price range
5 Star Review   By chinoman279 on Home Depot - Feb 25, 2011

Have owned the Husky generator for 4 days. Our power went out from the recent ice storm. Just wanted to power up important things in the house. After disconnecting from the utility at the meter I fed the house out of the 20 amp twist lock plug. I could not be happier as it powered up the whole house without a hitch. The well, fridge, furnace, sump pump, and all lights were on simultaneously. I think the generator is underrated at 5kw continuous output. I used my meter and was pulling 5800 watts continuous. I was pleasantly surprised as the AVR on the unit was able to keep a steady 232 volts at full load, beyond rated load actually. Under no load it puts out 239. A 3 percent voltage drop is very acceptable under extreme load and well within specs on any household items. This in my opinion is the best generator in this price range. The Subaru engine cannot be beat. The fuel consumption is excellent. Under light to moderate load I was able to pull a full 13.25 hours out of a tank of fuel. So far I have about 60 hours on the generator. I changed the oil after 20 hours of break in and put in a full synthetic oil. It is slightly loud, but most all in this price range will be. Not excessively loud by any means. I am completely satisfied with the purchase. I was given the choice between this generator and the equivalent setup with the Briggs motor at the same price. It was a no brainer to get this one. Do not be fooled by the lack of a 30 amp plug. The 20 amp twist lock is completely adequate for this size of generator.

2 snow storms and still going strong
5 Star Review   By roadrunner357 on Home Depot - Feb 17, 2011

i bought my husky in jan of 2010 after we were hit by a big snow storm at hd it was the last one they had available, we had been without power for 2 days before i bought it, i picked it up and got it home and filled it with gas and hooked it directly to my circut breaker and fired it up and was able to run everything in the house except the microwave oven and the washer dryer, the generator runs really well and quiet too i can get about 10.5 hours out of it before i refill the tank and it usually only take's 5 gallons that's better then most other generators the husky is the best one to buy on a budget without breaking the bank,
