Only started generator - not used yet
4 Star Review   By Paul on Home Depot - Jun 1, 2013

I have only started the generator once to check that it runs. The instructions were fairly easy. The diagram could have been a little better so the parts could be found easier. It started right away. The noise was low enough so it could only be heard a little inside the house but I don't know how it compares to other generators.

Easy to use, great price
5 Star Review   By MrPlok on Home Depot - Mar 28, 2013

I just recently purchased this generator and prepped it for use. It started on the first pull with little to no sputtering and ran just fine. The real test will be if I have to use it for an extended period of time in a power outage. My dad and a coworker have the same model and have each used it several times with no problems.

Works well BUT Very limited uses. Better off with a higher wattage output unit.
2 Star Review   By wa55tt00 on Home Depot - Mar 10, 2013

The specs for the rated VAC amperage and the max rated VAC apmerage are misleading. The most amps this machine can cover is 30 AMPS ... and thats stretching it a bit. This machine is good to run a freezer, frigerator and maybe a light or two. There is no need for a transfer switch or inter lock device. Use 10 gauge, waterproof extension cords and be done with this baloney. Lastly you have to build a shelter for this machine. If your going to use it as a permanent fixture then get a unit that does your entire house and have an electrician install it with an automatic transfer switch. Cost a fortune BUT you get what you pay for. Took 2months to get it on back order . Not worth it.

Exactly the generator I needed. Can run the well pump, furnace and a few circuits in emergencies
5 Star Review   By Mike on Home Depot - Mar 5, 2013

I have purchased 2 of these generators. 1 for a cousin in Rockaway that needed a generator after Sandy. He used it to run tools for cleanup and repair and then used it as a power source until his electric was restored. Since then he has loaned it to various neighbors and has had no problems. Based on that i purchased one for my own house. I haven't needed it yet but feel better having it available/

Easy set up and Start Up.
5 Star Review   By Forecastguy on Home Depot - Feb 7, 2013

My generator arrived yesterday after the long back order from Sandy. I was simple to set up and after adding oil and gas fired it up. Two easy pulls and everything working as expected. I ran the gas out after running for an hour break in and will now have it on stand by in case another storm knocks the power out. Atleast our freezer will be protected. I will at some point this spring have a manual transfer switch put in so we can run our furnace to keep pipes from freezing if the outage hits in the winter.

Easy setup - started on first try.
5 Star Review   By YardleyYeti on Home Depot - Feb 5, 2013

Easy setup - just wheels and a handle. Oil is hard to reach, best to have a funnel with a long neck. Instructions are clear and it started up in freezing temperatures on the first try. Have not needed to use it yet though.

3 Star Review   By JPersch on Home Depot - Feb 4, 2013

Unit works as advertised. Only problem is with the mounting feet/isolators. You need to loctite them on, otherwise the nuts will vibrate off. Home Depot took 12 days in order and delivery.

Very happy with this purchase. After filling with oil and gas the generator started on the second pull. Not quite as quiet as I expected. Have wired the generator to power our house through a sub panel and the generator has sufficient power to take care of all essential loads.

MADE IN CHINA
1 Star Review   By jl55 on Home Depot - Dec 5, 2012

I purchased it because i thought Generac made all the generators in USA, turns out all the GP line is made in china. I opened the box and all the paint was peeling off the frame, because they painted over rust. I am going to spend a little more and get an xg6500 because its made in Whitewater, Wisconsin and should be better quality.

Added the parts per instructions very easily and after fueling and adding oil, started with only 3 pulls. Easy manual.
5 Star Review   By yazoofor2 on Home Depot - Dec 4, 2012

Manual and assembly instructions were easily understood. Had product ready to try out in about 20 minutes after unpackaging. Did a test run - it started up in 3 pulls. The only thing to be aware of is if you live in a cold climate, it ships with 30 weight oil - so read the manual and get the one that's proper to the temps. in your area. Great machine.

Product is great - Home Depot's description was not
4 Star Review   By BobH on Home Depot - Dec 4, 2012

The generator was easy to set up, and for the little I've used it, has performed well. My issue is that it appeared that what I was ordering was a Generac with an electric start - the box it came in even says (as the first product feature) "electric start." But, alas, there is no electric start. Given the hassle of returning it, and that the pull start works fine, I just decided to keep it.

GP 5500 Generator
5 Star Review   By Guess on Home Depot - Dec 4, 2012

I was out of power for a total of 9 days after Hurricane Sandy. I was lucky to find a new shipment at Home Depot 3 days after the hurricane. I was able to build and power the unit in about 20 minutes. I was extremely pleased with the packaging and the clear instructions. The generator starts right up on the first pull. This unit powered all the items that I needed. The gas usage is better than I expected. I am very happy with this purchase.

OUTSTANDING
5 Star Review   By Generatorguy on Home Depot - Nov 20, 2012

I bought this generator on the advice of Consumer Reports. I am not disappointed. Yes, it's noisier than similar Honda's but nowhere near the price. You can convert a small shed to enclose the generator.

Consumer Reports recommended
5 Star Review   By drewber on Home Depot - Nov 20, 2012

I finally decided to purchase a generator after the recent hurricane. The Generac 5500 was recommended as a Best Buy in CR and Home Depot had the exact model & price point. I had to order it from the warehouse as it was not available at the store. It was easy to prep -simply adding the wheels and handle. I hope I never use it but I am confident it will do the job. Delivery was 6 days after submitting the order - ahead of promised time. No complaints. DB - in frequently powerless Kingsville, Md.

Quality equipment, good product
4 Star Review   By tjs1040 on Home Depot - Nov 20, 2012

Generator was delivered on time. Set-up was not difficult although instructions could have been a little more detailed. Bought unit as backup power source during inclement weather when we tend to lose electric service. Have not had opportunity to use generator yet luckily but, have test run the machine and it works beautifully.

Did its job exactly as intended
5 Star Review   By PowerHaus on Home Depot - Nov 18, 2012

Came in very handy after Sandy while without power for 13 days. I ran it about 3-4 hours a day with the heating, fridge freezer and a couple of lamps, and ended up getting just over 2 hours of run time per gallon with that load. Always started on the first pull. I'm a little disappointed with the engine's own wiring that seems to be tacked on almost like an afterthought and is somewhat vulnerable and exposed. Yes, it is VERY loud - I always wore ear defenders when anywhere near it. Quite compact with the fold-down handle.

Great Generator for the homeowner
5 Star Review   By Jim1951 on Home Depot - Nov 17, 2012

This generator ran flawlessly for over 245 hours straight. Only shut it down to fuel it and change the oil. Adapted it to main panel and ran whole house less dryer. I would recommend this unit for anyone who is looking for a reliable unit that will last.

A solid mid-level size generator for emergency use
4 Star Review   By mjf27 on Home Depot - Nov 14, 2012

This generator arrived 2 days after Superstorm Sandy hit and left me without power. It took 30 minutes to unwrap it and put it together (attach the wheels, fill it with oil and gas). It fired right up on the first pull. With ease, it runs my refrigerator, a handful of lights, TV, cable box, modem, space heater and an occasional microwave use. It was averaging 12 hours of run time before needing to be refueled for the 96 straight hours of use before our power came back. It appears to be solidly built with high quality materials. Nothing felt flimsy. Changing the oil was a breeze. As others have noted, it is loud. For example, it is far louder than my 2 stage snow blower, and I quickly learned to wear ear protection when I am near it. But that's a small inconvenience compared with it's usefulness.

EASY TO START. PLENTY OF POWER. HAD REFRIGERATOR, FURNACE, TV W/ CABLE BOX AND MODEM, A FEW LAMPS , TWO SUMP PUMPS AND RAN A LINE TO EACH OF MY NEIGHBORS FOR THEIR SUMP PUMPS. IT RAN 24/7 (EXCEPT TO GAS AND DO 2 OIL CHANGES) FOR 10 STRAIGHT DAYS FOLLOWING HURRICANE SANDY. GOT ABOUT 10 HRS ON A FULL TANK. SUMPS PUMPS FILLED EVERY TEN MINUTES SO I COULDN'T EVEN COOL IT DOWN FOR LONG. THIS GENERATOR SAVED 3 HOMES , BLOCKS FROM THE RARITAN BAY ON THE JERSEY SHORE FROM FLOODING. KEPT US WARM AND MY MILK COLD. I CAN'T GIVE A LONG TERM REVIEW BEING I PICKED IT UP THE DAY OF THE HURRICANE. IT ALL READY PAID FOR ITSELF AS

Generac 6500
5 Star Review   By Fred on Home Depot - Nov 2, 2012

Excellent unit! Purchased it in September 2012 as a backup unit to run at least a sump pump if our power went out. Low and behold hurricane "SANDY" stopped by. Set unit up and it ran for 77 hours. Additional tied in 2 refrigerators, 1 freezer, stand lamp and a portable electric heater. Money well spent or I would be looking at thousands of dollars in damage. The only draw back is it is loud. Thanks Generac. Fred in Chalfont, Pa.

Great generator so far
5 Star Review   By BillM on Home Depot - Nov 2, 2012

I purchased this generator about 3 weeks before hurricane Sandy hit. It arrived in perfect shape and the trucking company did a great job. 18 wheeler pulled up and the driver off loaded it and put it in my garage for me on a pallet jack. It was unexpected! The generator started on the first pull for the 5 times I have started it. I was lucky to still have power after Sandy hit but my In-Laws were out for 4 days and my generator kept them warm and with some lights and TV etc. So far no issues to report and I am getting more than 10 hours on a tank of gas - more like 12 hours.

AVOID!
1 Star Review   By GMac on Home Depot - Oct 29, 2012

I bought this in 2011. Out of the box it started right up for the Halloween freak storm, however, 20 minutes into running it the gas tank starts leaking through the seems. The tank is a poorly welded steel stamped envelope. It took Generac 3 months to get a new tank out to me. It's now 2012 and a day in advance of Hurricane Sandy, I tried to start it and it won't. Since it will not cycle through the pull, hanging at one spot the small engine guy thinks it's a bad motor - "broken rod" was tossed at me. Under warranty I've been calling Generac only to wait on the message/recording system for 5 minutes to get a busy signal hang up. Three calls, voice mail, and counting. This item is simply not supported - sales guy picks right up though. Try going on to the website and you'll find broken links to "a warranty", no easy access to the manual, or anyone addressing your issues with this awful piece of junk. My advice - if you want to see this thing sitting in your garage, non functional, while the lights are out in a Hurricane - this is for you!

Nice quality generator
5 Star Review   By OCDave on Home Depot - Sep 18, 2012

Through miscommunication on R&L Carriers part, my generator was delivered a few days late. Once it arrived the driver dropped it off at my garage door. Assembly was easy, you just have to bolt on the wheels and handle. I then added the supplied oil, fuel, and in 4 pulls it started up. The generator ran fine under load, and is a touch loud as other reviewers have mentioned, but really not so bad. I also installed a Reliance 10 circuit transfer switch, also purchased at Home Depot. I'm able to run most of my house with this generator, including my well pump and furnace. Now I'm ready for the next outage!

Reliable except won't roll with one wheel!!
2 Star Review   By JimmyG on Home Depot - Sep 12, 2012

First time I used my unit it worked fine for 4 hours. When I went to roll it back into the garage, the weld on one of the brackets that holds the wheel on failed and I was stuck having to lift it back into the garage. Very poor welding. Both brackets were tack welded but most of the weld didn't touch the fram. Poor quality qontrol. Unit is very loud and vibrated allot. Other than that, it worked...

Generac will not honor warranty
2 Star Review   By Jerry on Home Depot - Aug 26, 2012

Less than one year old, my generator started leaking gas. Local authorized repair shop warned me that Generac will not honor two year warranty, claimed it was my fault that I used gas with 10% ethanol though this is the recommendation in owner's manual. Generac customer service would not let me speak to technican-DO NOT BUY GENERAC PRODUCTS unless you want to end up paying for repair bills

So far so good
3 Star Review   By Scoffer on Home Depot - Aug 8, 2012

Started up and seems to run OK. I will know for sure if we get hit by a hurricane. Seems a bit noisy- to bad the mfg's of generators do not quantitise the sound level (DBa's). I wonder why Generac recommends draining oil from the crankcase if it is not used for 30 days. Seems unique to Generac. This generator may be a 5 star item - but it is still to soon to say.

Easy final setup and startup; ready for next BGE outage!
5 Star Review   By Ken190 on Home Depot - Aug 8, 2012

reasonably clear owner's manual and quick setup guide; gas gauge is a nice touch; four 120 VAC outlets offer convenience; as with most larger generators, wouldn't it be nice if better noise suppression were available.

Generally a fair product.
3 Star Review   By Magneto on Home Depot - Aug 7, 2012

Delivery was outstanding. Assembly was easy and instructions were satisfactory. Muffler is a tad bit on the noisy side. Wish they would charge a few $$ more and design a muffler like Honda. Pull handle broke the third time I started the generator. Generator works fine other than that.

My hero!
4 Star Review   By Tayo on Home Depot - Jul 24, 2012

I purchased this on-line and it was delivered June 8. The Derecho wind storm came through on June 29 and knocked power out to us and about a million other folks. Boy was I happy we had this! Started up real easy and kept the food in the fridge and freezer from going bad, water running (we have a well pump) and a few fans and lights going. Ran like a champ! Louder than I had hoped for, but knowing I had power, it became music to my ears. Made surviving 4 days without power and 100+ degree weather, just a little more bearable.

Excellent standby generator for use during power ouitages!
5 Star Review   By JMcC on Home Depot - Jan 31, 2012

Easy to assemble in less than 10 minutes. Starts on first or second pull, somewhat noisy (think lawnmower) but stable without a lot of vibration. Nice power supply for a small home or a number of appliances during a power outage. Home Depot had the best price with delivery to my door within a week of placing my order online.

Two pull maximum
5 Star Review   By Fred on Home Depot - Jan 29, 2012

I bought this about 5 years ago. Have had to use it twice. Each time it started flawlessly, although electric start would be nice. It powers the whole house minus the A/C. I keep Stabil in the gas and never have a problem. It is quite heavy and takes a little effort to move it around, even with the wheels. I use a 50 foot cord supplied by my electrician to reach the power panel at the back of the house. All-in-all it's a real comfort just having it available if needed.

Bad Generac generator + Bad Warranty Policy
1 Star Review   By LostToGenerac on Home Depot - Jan 24, 2012

Very disappoint of Generac brand and its warranty policy. I paid for expensive generator in hope it is reliable, but it is not, and so very bad warranty policy. Its first run was fine. Then I follow the included instruction to maintain it monthly, but after 3 to 4 months, it suddenly had fuel leaking and won't start-up (same problem with other user). I contact Generac for repair, but after that Generac refuse to cover the repair so I paid on my own. Then only two weeks after the repair, it got the same (exact the same) fuel leaking issue. Fortunately for me, that the repair is still within the warranty period, so I don't have to paid to repair it again. But it is proved that Generac generator is NOT = America Quality any more. The generator was fined in the first few month, and completely unreliable and hassle after that. Will you paid hundred dollar for that?

Seems to be a good generator
5 Star Review   By Angel on Home Depot - Jan 21, 2012

Purchased this for a vacation home on an island with frequent blackouts. Assembly was easy and it started on the second pull. All sockets checked out fine. Noise level was acceptable. I might supplement this after the next blackout, but as of now we seem to be ready for it.

Product performs as promised
5 Star Review   By Dannyboy on Home Depot - Jan 19, 2012

Bought this as a family gift for Christmas so I didn't fill with fuel and oil until afterward. Comes with the proper oil and fired right up. I only ran it for 10 min or so then shut off the in-line fuel shut off to run the carb bowl dry. Purpose is as a emergency backup for the house. Electrician quoted me $806 to install to my electric panel and says it will easily run up to 8 circuits of my choosing. Clearly the refrigerators/freezers, microwave, furnace for heat and hot water, cable and TV for communication and if I needed it a well pump for water. I would get the 6500 model if I needed the well pump because it is 220v and draws quite a bit when it kicks on.

Great for the price!!!
5 Star Review   By Slugworth on Home Depot - Jan 15, 2012

I got this after the Oct. 29 power outage. I wasnt going through that again!!! So i looked around and this had the best reviews and great price. So i unboxed it put it together and fired it up on the first pull!! It ran great sounds great so far so good. It seems to "hunt" while there is not a load on it but once you put a load on it it smooths out fine..I run it every month for about 15min under load just to keep it up..Make sure you shut the gas flow valve off BEFORE you shut it down for storage. You want to run it out of gas till it shuts down on it's own. that way you ensure the carb is empty of gas...

Nice Product
4 Star Review   By Rich on Home Depot - Dec 24, 2011

Unit fired right up out of the box on the 2nd pull after adding oil and gas. Since then it has fired up on the first pull. I have not had to use it yet but I am confident it will work like a charm. I plan to exercise it once a month and not store it with gas in it. I have just been adding like 8ozs of gas and letting it run out every month.

Powerful but Loud
4 Star Review   By cyclewatts on Home Depot - Dec 15, 2011

Estimated Time: 10 min. Put the wheels and handle on, poured in the engine oil provided, and added 1/4 gal of regular gas. Moved the choke to the left and it started on the first pull. It's very loud! Plugged the unit into my home manual transfer switch and had the whole house running... with the somewhat loud rumble of the GP5500. Awesome!!

Post Disaster Purchase
4 Star Review   By DeeDee on Home Depot - Dec 13, 2011

Bought this on Generac's reputation and reviews so I hope this stands up to what everyone else says. Packaged great and fairly easy to assemble with good instructions. Started on my 3rd pull, ran for awhile, shut down and then started again 1st time. Don't ever want another flood but this is the second in 5 yrs and being without power for 10 days was 9 too long so I bit the bullet and purchased this mid size generator. Had to have wheels and a handle because this thing weighs twice as much as I do. Free delivery was an added bonus because I could not have put this in my car trunk.

Severe gas leak
1 Star Review   By solidwood on Home Depot - Dec 8, 2011

Bought one of these in the spring for $399. Started up with just a few pulls. I ran it for a few minutes, just to verify voltages. It sat for a couple of months, but when I needed it on a cold night when power was out, I could not get it started. The next day (warmer) it started right away. Cold starting may be questionable. I ran it for about 1/2 hour a few weeks later and went out to check on it and it was leaking gas *BADLY*. I shut it down and have not had time to get into it to see where it is leaking. However, I would not expect a generator with less than one hour of operating time to leak like that. So if I can get the leak stopped, I'll give it a higher rating, because it does generate electrical power as advertised, at least when the temperature is warm enough to start it.

Happy with purchase
4 Star Review   By Robert on Home Depot - Dec 6, 2011

I'm very happy with this purchase. It arrived quickly and even though it was curbside delivery, the driver was nice enough to bring it up to my garage. It was easy to put together the wheels and handle. I filled it with oil and put in a little gas and it fired right up. I connected a few tools and appliances to it and let it run for about 15 min without any trouble. Loud? Yes, like a snow blower. However, it's not unbearable. I don't think you can find a quiet generator without spending a lot more money. The "Good" rating is only because I haven't had to use it for an emergency yet. So, I don't know how it will perform under extreme conditions.

An excellent price for a top of the line generator
5 Star Review   By Andy on Home Depot - Nov 22, 2011

I haven't had it long enough to indicate the long term reliability, but, so far everytime I needed to start it, it was there putting out watts. Also, it only takes between 2 or 3 pulls to start the engine.

good value , solid product
4 Star Review   By Bobb54 on Home Depot - Nov 20, 2011

have not had a chance to hook up to the home yet since all the transfer switch manufactores are back logged with getting them out there . I did get to use for a couple hours with recent power outtage and it worked great . I cant see why they cant find a way to make these more quiet. It is not extreinly loud either , I have a small 1800 watt coleman and its not to much louder than that . easy to put togethor . If I could get it hooked up to the home and se that it runs the essentials my rating would be an excellent I am sure . Ordering through home depot was very easy as well .

Good machine, BUT!!!
1 Star Review   By Paulie on Home Depot - Sep 27, 2011

Great machine but extremely loud! So bad I had to cover my ears and shut it down. Not sure but sounded like metal to metal. Engine sounded normal though. Putting together the weels and adding the oil was a snap, ten minutes. This thing started up, one pull and went right off! I was sorry to have to take it back to the store, I just couldn't tolerate the noise. Called Generac before I did but could get nowhere. All sold out due to Irene. I will order another and will go to a svc center before I do though and see if they can demonstrate one to see if that is the normal sound. If so, I will forget the generac's for sure. By the way, Home Depot was great, they couldn't do enough to please me. Thanks Home Depot.

Easy Start, Runs Reliably.
5 Star Review   By harold on Home Depot - Sep 7, 2011

After a recent tornado there was no power. I powered my two refrigerators and freezer and two neighbors refrigerators for 24 hrs without any difficulty. Easy installation of wheels. Be sure turn the gasoline shutoff valve to off when storing, or the unit may drip gasoline.

Mostly good so far
4 Star Review   By tlwcpa on Home Depot - Sep 6, 2011

I had this united delivered by Home Depot. After minimal assembly, the unit started right up. After sitting one month, though, I attempted to start the unit and noted fuel was leaking through the carburetor. Had someone take the carburetor apart who fixed the float which had stuck in the open position. Unit then started. After another month, power was out due to Hurrican Irene, Unit would not start because the carburetor float was stuck in the closed positiion. Had someone take the carburetor apart who advised that the pin controlling the carburetor float had deteriorated, most likely due to ethanol in the gasoline. He advised shutting off the fuel supply to starve the engine when shutoff was desired (so that gas would not sit in the carbureator) and adding an additive to the gas to neutralize the ethonol. Ran the generator for 12 hours/day for 5 days with a direct hookup to the circuit breaker box. With judicious balancing of electric use, the generator ran most of the house including occasional use of the water pump and water heater. For some reason, though, the generator would not adequately power the dishwasher. We did not try to run the washer or electric range Overall, I am happy, but plan to be careful with the fuel and to run the unit for a few minutes each month in an attempt to forestall future problems with the carburetor.

Details details
3 Star Review   By GMac on Home Depot - Jul 3, 2011

The generator I received did not have rubber outlet covers (or any outlet covers for that matter). Therefore, the panel is not protected from the weather according to the first line in description. Missing a couple washers mentioned in the packing list also. Originally, the ad also stated this included an extension cord. It does not. Seems the ad has changed since. The equivalent cord (the socket cord 25' with 4 outlets) goes for $89 on Amazon. Considering the rediculous price I bought this for using slickdeals, I would recommend this product again at the price I paid, otherwise, I wouldn't as I hate when the ad doesn't exactly match what's received and I usually return immediately under those circumstances.

We really like the output of this generator, It is going to work great around the house if we have a power outage. It is a little louder than our old one, so I don't know if we will be using this generator while we are camping. But we couldn't pass on the price that we paid.

Excellent Product
5 Star Review   By RunninAmuck on Home Depot - Apr 30, 2011

I wanted a 7000 Watt Generator, but when this became available at a GREAT PRICE? Sold!! With a 3 Bedroom Condo and living in the Hurricane Area of the Gulf Coast This will more than do the job of powering several items in the house. With 4 - 120v plugs and a 240v plug This will more than do the job!! Easy to store, easy to assemble (minimal assembly) and fired up the first time. During IKE we got lucky not having power for only 60 hours. Not taking that chance again. If even one use saves freezer and refrigerator food? This Generator paid for itself and then some. At least next time I can still enjoy my coffee!!

Lots of bang for the buck
5 Star Review   By Electric1 on Home Depot - Feb 13, 2011

It's hard to beat this generator for the price. It is very easy to assemble. Install wheels and handles, add oil and gas, ground the frame, and crank it up. It is easy to start and mine cranked on the first pull of the rope. I connected an air compessor to give it a load test. This gen worked like a charm. My next project is to install a manual transfer switch.
