A Marvellous Instrument

Strengths: Lightness, playing speed, range (up to 7 octaves), amazing sounds...

Weakness: Octave keys can be tricky to master. Other musos can get upset... Some sounds not so good.

I have played soprano sax and flute for years, plus recorder and Irish whistle (and guitar), so I know my way around keys. I found the WX5/VL70-m combination a real exhilaration. The WX5 is easy to play. Setting it up takes time, and you have to make some choices, but the end result is a fantastically versatile instrumnent. After a while I took the plunge and bought Patchman's Turbochip, and it is very good, a definite improvement, superb detail on the acoustic instruments with all their quirks and unique habits. But note, the original VL70 chip was good too, until I heard the difference. I use an optical volume pedal because it's the best way to mix yourself in and out of a situation rather than using the small module volume control. I tried the big footpedal sound-changer but got fed up with it, sold it and do all changes on the horn: its multi-function controls are amazing, and worth learning. I mentioned that other musicians can get upset. Yep, it's true. I've played it for example in a band with a Spanish guitarist (Yamaha-electrified type) and when he soloed I switched the WX to Spanish guitar and started ghosting his solo, note for note... it confused him, he thought he was going mad because the sounds he heard were so similar and his fingers weren't doing it... Same thing happened with a violinist, and I found the WX could go higher and much faster... so that upset him a bit. But it's guitarists who get upset when you choose a stonking guitar distortion sound (the VL offers many) and the WX again can go as fast as Eddie van Halen. Notes can be bent in all ways and it goes higher and deeper than any guitar, then in a second can be pan pipes or tenor sax... I call it the Chameleon, and although I LOVE 'real' instruments, made of brass, wood etc, and I like the vibration you feel in a sax, this WX5 enables you to do something strange. Was it Duke Ellington who said to an player:"Learn your instrument, learn music, and then play it all on your horn"? Well, you get the point: you express it all thru whatever instrument you're holding. The WX5 chameleon lets you choose in a second the very instrument for the occasion: melancholy cello, soft flute, drones, reeds, space sounds... You just have to think like an oboeist, guitarist, trumpeter etc. Despite its being plastic (which appropriately means malleable) the WX5/VL70 is a tremendous modern instrument, brilliantly thought out and engineered. One thing alone would make it worthwhile, being able to play Miles Davis type solos (the trumpet sounds are great), but this thing offers hundreds of other revelatory experiments and, if you're not careful, the temptation to blow other instrumentalists offstage, so be careful. it can make other instruments seem rather limited, in a live amplified situation; acoustically, the detail of 'real' instruments still wins, of course, but a lifetime isn't long enough to master all the WX options. Ideal for a curious, fastfingered person with a taste for orchestras, jazz and science fiction.

A well made, quality, professional instrument!

Strengths: Expressiveness. Wide Range of musical possibilities. Just plain FUN to play!

Weakness: Plastic body and keys! WHY can't they make this beautiful instrument out of metal?

I first bought a WX5 over a year ago then sold it and regretted it ever since so I recently purchased another one. I missed it terribly! This instrument is so much fun to play I can hardly put it down. I don't play it all that well but am having a blast learning it!
