CD-GT2 - Very useful tool, with a few annoying things about it
Strengths: Durable Construction, especially CD compartment. More compact then CD-GT1. Decent guitar effects, at least for training purposes
Weakness: No Output Level control, very bad. Tiny display with barely legible small fonts. Minor complaint, but switching the effect presets on the fly is difficult.
The unit has great features that work as advertised, mostly. The ability to slow down the song without a key change is king! I learned incredibly hard and fast licks by carefully listening to every note in "slow motion", and then practicing with the song, slowly increasing the speed to normal. My review mainly compares this unit to CD-GT1, which was very good, but the CD compartment cover design...

The unit has great features that work as advertised, mostly. The ability to slow down the song without a key change is king! I learned incredibly hard and fast licks by carefully listening to every note in "slow motion", and then practicing with the song, slowly increasing the speed to normal.
My review mainly compares this unit to CD-GT1, which was very good, but the CD compartment cover design was poor, everyone I knew had hinges break off very quickly. I devised a method of installing metal pins that solved the problem.
Now, back to CD-GT2. I had it for over a month as of now. It is more compact, the CD enclosure was completely redesigned, it looks much more durable (metal hinge pin!), and works great so far. Some dual-purpose control buttons of GT1 were changed to extra buttons on GT2, which to me makes controlling the features much easier.
The menu driven controls are simple and intuitive, once you played with them for a few minutes. The display serves to guide you through the menus; however, it is inadequately small for this purpose, the letters and symbols are tiny, and you have to sit right next to it to make out the text. I would gladly pay double for a larger display!
The guitar canceling feature is finicky, you can make it work somewhat, but you have to re-adjust all settings for each song, so, in practice, this feature is of limited usefulness. TASCAM says this upfront though, so expectation was not high in that regard.
The CD-GT2 has no Output Level control. Big mistake! I think omitting the Output Level control was a poor design decision. CD-GT1 had it, and it was very useful because all CDs are recorded at different levels. With this unit, I have to make annoying menu adjustment each time I change CDs, instead of simply turning a wheel. This is my main gripe about this guitar trainer; it almost stopped me from buying it.
You could get around this problem by feeding the phones output into the amp, but you must be very careful not to overload the amp input, so turn it way down at first and SLOWLY increase the level.
Minor comment about TASCAM. When I bought it (on Internet), they had a $25 rebate available. When I submitted the rebate, they sent me a letter saying the merchant from whom I bought it was not an authorized retailer. I called the person who signed the letter and told them that there was no official list of authorized retailers. Without it, how could I know who is authorized and who is not? They had no good answer for me, so I felt cheated, especially considering that I buy so much staff from them.
Regardless, don't let the negative staff to dissuade you from buying this guitar trainer -I may be too picky. The unit is a good tool and well worth the price.

Tascam CDGT2 Portable CD Guitar Trainer
Strengths: The cd player sounds very good and the unit does everything as advertised.I find it great for playing along with backing track cds. It's user friendly too.
Weakness: It eats batteries so get the Tascam psp520 adapter. The effects sound good with my Gibson guitars but not so good with my Stratocaster. However, there is a simple solution to this-see below.
I think the CDGT2 sounds good even when it is slowed down past 30%.I have no problem with deterioration of sound quality on my unit.I can put a cd backing track on and have it play in any key I choose and it will sound great. The onboard tuner seems fine. The effect unit is ok and fun to work with but I found that I can put the Tascam effect section on bypass and hook up one of my own little...

I think the CDGT2 sounds good even when it is slowed down past 30%.I have no problem with deterioration of sound quality on my unit.I can put a cd backing track on and have it play in any key I choose and it will sound great. The onboard tuner seems fine. The effect unit is ok and fun to work with but I found that I can put the Tascam effect section on bypass and hook up one of my own little multieffect units and get some absolutely killer sounds while jamming to cds.The loop function makes learning licks faster and easier than ever.I'll deduct one star for the effects unit, but I highly recommend this great little box and I am glad I bought it!
