Description
Theatrical release: March 6, 1998. THE BIG LEBOWSKI features numerous references to the 1946 film THE BIG SLEEP, directed by Howard Hawks and starring Humphrey Bogart as a man who gets involved in a similarly chaotic mystery. Bob Dylan performs The Man in Me, the song played over the opening credits; Shawn Colvin performs Viva Las Vegas over the closing credits. Other artists whose songs appear in the film include Townes Van Zandt, Elvis Costello, Nina Simone, Yma Sumac, and Kenny Rogers. The Dude is based partly on real-life producer Jeff Dowd. The Jackie Treehorn film clip shown in the film is called LOGJAMMIN'; real-life porn star Asia Carrera plays the lead role in the fake film. Shooting took almost 12 weeks, finishing in April 1997. BRANDED, the television show that Arthur Digby Sellers is credited with writing in the film, was a TV Western series that starred Chuck Connors; the Dude thinks it starred Mike Connors, of MANNIX fame. I suppose there's a side of me that, had I not been an actor, might have lived his life like the Dude, Jeff Bridges said about the role he played in the film. All those half-finished sentences, all those ers and ums and ehs, they're all scripted in. You can't be relaxed about it. The dialogue is like music. All the characters have their own score and it takes practice and timing to get it right. You can't slack off, Steve Buscemi said about the screenplay. John Turturro's role was cut out of the edited television version, possibly because almost everything he says includes curses. Rock musicians Aimee Mann and Flea (of the Red Hot Chili Peppers) appear as members of the Nihilists. Country rock musician Jimmie Dale Gilmore plays Smokey, one of Walter's bowling opponents. One of the reasons why bowling was chosen as the centerpiece of the film, Joel Coen told the Boston Phoenix, was that it's the only thing that calls itself a sport where you can smoke and drink beer. The film screened at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on March 5, 1998.

Everyone in this film is perfect. Jeff Bridges is surprisingly great as The Dude. I never realized how many "F-words" were used in this film until someone did a u-tube clip of all the F-words and it was mind-boggling. So be warned if obscene language bothers you avoid this movie. I thought it was very clever and funny and as usual for the Coens, very different from what we are used to. I can never understand how someone would not find this film to be humorous, but comedy is personal, some people just get off on repeated kicks to someone else's crotch. To each his own.

One of the best comedies of the last 20 years.  The dialogue is in the top 2 of all movies (alongside Pulp Fiction), and the characters are unforgettable.  It's hard to think of Jeff Bridges and John Goodman as anyone but the Dude and Walter.

So concerned with being original... no, more like wacky that it forgets to be funny. But watch out for John Goodman who is brilliant and manages to give his scenes some good laughs.

Once upon a time, the Coen Brothers made great movies (Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing, Fargo)........then came the vulgar, unfunny mess called Big Lebowksi. And they haven't made a good movie since.

This movie has been on my list to check out for years... and now having finally seen it, i'm pretty pissed off that it took me so long. I think what made this movie work for me was "The Dude," played perfectly by Jeff Bridges. The Dude is just your average underachieving, white russian drinking, bowling, low key guy who happens to think that the rug in his front room "ties the room together." When some guy charges into is house and pisses on the rug due to a case of mistaken identity, the Dude is spurred into action. He tracks down the guy whose rug was supposed to have been pissed on (also named Lebowski), and manages to walk out with a replacement rug. This puts the wheels in motion, and suddenly the Dude finds himself embroiled in a hostage situation with a million dollars in play, a giant cell phone that is constantly ringing, a group of German nihilists, Mrs Lebowski's toe, a pornography ring, and a bowling tournament in jeopardy. Fortunately, The Dude is uniquely equipped to hold things together in these confusing circumstances, and proves himself to be the right person in the right moment of history.

So far, the most satisfying effort from the Brothers Coen. I usually refrain from describing something as "genius", but this picture comes as close as possible, as it's a study of the mundane bordered by entwined extremes (wildly engaging characters and the sordid situations that involve them, with the plebian calm of the bowling alley serving as a familiar center). Even when you think it's straying into the inexplicable, it kicks you back onto the rail and sends you rollicking along into the next hilarious set-up (how it all ties together is borderline-magnificent; you feel as if you haven't been watching a movie so much as somebody's bad day working itself out). How can anyone recommend something that's sleazy (cameos by Ben Gazzara, John Turturro), sexy (Julianna Moore and Tara Reid), sweet (a great change-of-pace for Steve Buscemi), and surreal (the Cosmic Lane/Pin Girls dream sequence is one for the ages), all at the same time? True cinemaphiles are miles ahead of this review (nodding in rapt appreciation); hungry novices are enthusiastically encouraged to purchase the DVD and prepare for one of the best theatrical releases of the last five years.

i've seen this film a ton. a stoner sage of The Dude as played by Jeff Bridges, who is marvelous, at his comedic best. The film is also superbly written by the Coen brothers. The only film of theirs that matches the amount of quotable lines for me is Oh Brother, where art thou. Lebowksi is also superbly acted by John Goodman and Steve Buscemi. people tend to slag of comedy but making people laugh is a hard game. if sublime and dark humor are what you like the movie is for you. if a good Meg Ryan comedy is your game, i'd stay away. "It really tied the room together, man."

Just watched this one a couple of nights ago, and I have to admit it was pretty funny. You never know what kind of outlandish ideas the Coen Bros. are gonna come up with, and that's part of what makes their movies so entertaining. I knew it was gonna be good when I saw "the dude" write a check for 69 cents to pay for some half and half.

This is the single greatest movie of all time. The movie's humor is centralized around the dialog that may not appeal to everyone, but to those that it does appeal to it is the funniest thing you will ever hear. John Goodman as an ex vietnam vet with fits of explosive anger and Jeff Bridges as a permastoned leach of society along with Steve Buscemi for his first role ever where he is not the most talkative and character in the movie creates for a comedy that is unparalleled. This movie is a definite must in anyones collection. I can watch it over and over again and still laugh out loud everytime.

*Giggle* what another fantastic film by the Coen brothers! The main characters work really well together and its such a silly plot. My favourite scene has to be where they go around to the boys house and John Goodman does his "You are entering a world of pain" and then proceeds to smash up this really nice red sports car and the owner comes out! It is really quirky, but well worth trying to watch.

This is a great movie! True, it's dark and quirky in some areas, but Bridges plays a great freeloading bum as "The Dude". I love Goodman's role as the militant but crazy, Walter. This was actually a favorite among a lot of Sailors on my ship during our WestPac deployment in 2000. I had to show it at least twice a week.

This is one of the best comedies of the last ten years. I think of it as intelligence through insanity. Through most of it, you really dont understand whats going on. The ending just goes flat, as if nothing ever happens, but if you've been listning to the cowboy, you realise that this is a feel-good movie. "the dude abides... I take comfort in that" says the cowboy. You know what? I do to. I am glad that theres a guy like the dude out there somewhere, livin it up for the rest of us. I definitely take comfort in that. Good ol dude. After watching the whole thing trough for the first time, I can honestly say I will never get tired of this movie. It is just pure brilliance. And this is definately John Goodman's best role ever. He is just a crazy stubborn nut, and you gotta love him for it. -Mild mannered Dick Dirk

If you love bowling see this movie. The plot is a little shakey but it is funny in a sort of ridiculous kind of way.

I can't get enough of this movie! It hasn't worn itself out or gotten dull! The humor is sharp and the characters are just so ridiculous! I love this movie!

This is one funny movie. The characters are so outlandish its a scary thought that they were based on people the Coen bros. actually met. Its hilarious, see it!
