Works like charm
5 Star Review   By HokeyHydro on Home Depot - Jun 5, 2013

I build small wooden boats and restore furniture and the Dewalt sander is a must have tool. The speed control allows one to adjust the sander to the task, wide open with #40 grit for fast removal and shaping, to slow and easy with finer grits for finish prep. I hooked up a small shop vacuum to the sander and that greatly reduces airborne dust. The clip on bag works okay but requires frequent emptying.

Works Well
5 Star Review   By Maestro on Home Depot - May 15, 2013

For my minimal projects this works well. Only had one instance of it skipping but it was first time using an orbital sander so that's poor technique on my part. After that I had zero issues. I used various grits of Dewalt discs as well without issue. The bag does a decent job. I didn't hook it up to a Shop Vac but one of these days i will just to test it. Light weight, comfortable in my average size hands, easy to use and has good balance, in my opinion.

Worst DeWalt tool I've ever owned.
1 Star Review   By JJ109 on Home Depot - Apr 8, 2013

I purchased this sander (D26453K) predicated on my past experience using DeWalt sanders. I purchase DeWalt tools because of their excellent service and reliability. This sander has to be the worst tool they’ve produced lately. I spent more time, effort and energy trying to hang on while chasing this sander all around everything I tried to sand. I even went to the extent of calling their service center to ask about this problem. The person I talked to said that they have never heard of this complaint before. After searching the internet for reviews on this sander, I learned I was not the only person that has complained about this problem. The only saving grace was the Home Depot I purchased it from (Sarasota Fl) took the sander back without any fuss. Thank you Home Depot!

Sandtastic!
5 Star Review   By HDBigFan on Home Depot - Apr 5, 2013

The 5 inch Orbital Sander by Dewalt is an exceptional piece of equipment. I’ve used it on everything from smoothing out rough cut cedar to doing fine finish work on oak. The sander is very comfortable to use. The rounded edges provide a comfortable grip and the minimal vibration allows you to use the sander for longer periods of time before your arms gets numb. I’ve read reviews about the sander being hard to control but I have not had this issue. In fact, I’ve been able to “drive” the sander by raising the front edge slightly to go one direction and slightly raising the back edge to go the other direction. I really appreciate the hook and loop sanding pad and discs. Disc change-out is so quick and easy. Pull off the old sanding disc, line up the dust collection ports with the new sanding disc and stick it on. One downfall with this design is I’ve bumped the edge of the disc a few times which threw the paper out of alignment, at which point I've had to stop the sander and reapply the same sanding disc. This is a small price to pay for the convenience of the change-out. My old palm sander took the rectangular paper that had to be clamped on the ends. Changing the paper was a frustrating, 2-hand, tedious process. The performance of the Dewalt orbital sander far exceeds my old sanders performance. Sanding time has been dramatically reduced and as I mentioned before, I am able to sand for longer periods of time thanks to the reduced vibration. This is the one tool I own that has a dust bag that works very well. Sure it leaves a little dust on your project, but I would estimate that it collects 85%-90% of the dust it creates. The bag is nothing more than a bonus. It is decent quality but it is a soft bag which provides minimal protection. Maybe it is intended to protect the sander from dust, well it is a sander so maybe the bag portects your other tools from a dusty sander. My point is don’t base your buying decision on the free bag. Buy the sander that best suits your needs and if you determine that this is the model for you, you get a bag as a bonus. I am pleased with the 5 inch Orbital Sander by Dewalt. It is durable, comfortable, cleaner and easy to use.

Nice Sander
4 Star Review   By Gareoh12 on Home Depot - Mar 20, 2013

This is my first ROS and I bought it based on the reviews I read on this page. It performs well and is light and easy to maneuver. i didn't experience much vibration, however I did have a "phantom on" phenomena, when the sander simply started on its own, the solution, I guess, is to unplug it when not in use. My only beef is that it does not hook up to my Craftsman Shop vac, must buy an adapter. Would have rated higher if that wasn't the case.

Well built Orbital sander
5 Star Review   By Streetbobrod07 on Acme Tools - Mar 9, 2013

I've been very impressed with the Dewalt random orbital sander, so impressed I went out and bought a second one after about 4 years of use on the first one. Finally the variable speed went out, I just set it at max speed and still works great. The hook and loop system works great and it has a very easy to remove dust bag system. Hard case also comes in handy.

Junk
1 Star Review   By JMC5383 on Home Depot - Feb 25, 2013

Got this sander as a gift not to long ago. First sander had a mind of its own. Would turn on and off when it wanted to. Thought maybe there was a short in the switch. Returned it and got a new one. My second sander is just as bad and even at its highest speed I can completely stop the rotating pad with my hand. When using it, any kind of pressure causes the rotating pad to stop. Not just bog down, I mean 100% stops moving. Finished my project with a sanding block and had quicker results than when I used the sander. Either Dewalt shipped out a bad batch of sanders or their quality is starting to go down hill. I would not recommend this sandy to anyone. Going to return it and get a different band.

Very good product.
4 Star Review   By JoeyB on Home Depot - Feb 14, 2013

The orbital sander is very good. It performs as I expected it to. When removing the bag the vacuum port connects to the 1-1/2 inch hose of my industrial vac. What annoys me is that DeWalt went cheap by not providing a plastic box like they did on another DeWalt sander that I purchased several years earlier. The bag that they provided is ideal for carrying shoes but is worthless for storing the sander. For that reason I withhold one star.

Perfect Sander
5 Star Review   By DB75 on Home Depot - Oct 28, 2012

This sander is excellent, solid construction, good fit in your hands, one hand or with both. The smooth start up is a great feature and the variable speed is a must for me. Handles great, not too much vibration and the dust collector attaches firmly and works well. As far as the machine goes in my opinion it's perfect, the only negative is it doesn't come with a hard case. It comes with a useless nylon bag, I'm saying it's useless because when you put the sander inside it the weight is so unevenly distributed you can't even carry it, not to mention you can't stack it with the rest of your tools. I fault Stanley/Black & Decker for cutting costs here, a hard case for you tools is necessary. I've looked for a replacement case online and they are around $50.00 new, crazy.

WISH I HADN'T
2 Star Review   By BGRIFFIN on Home Depot - Sep 10, 2012

SO I TOOK IT OUT THE BOX AND USED IT THE FIRST TIME ON METAL, JUST TO LOOSEN SOME RUST AND SEE HOW IT WORKED. WORKED OK, QUITE A BIT OF 'WANDERING' BUT OIK, PUT IT BACK IN THE BOX AND DIDNT USE AGAIN FOR TWO WEEKS. WHEN I OPENED THE BOX AGAIN THE CATCH FOR THE DEBRIS WAS TORN IN TWO. THERES A SPRING INSIDE I GUESS TO HELP IT KEEP ITS SHAPE BUT APPARANTLY HAS RIPPED THE BAG....THATS GREAT. SO NOW I JUST ATTACH MY VACCUME BUT THE POINT IS THAT IT WAS BRAND NEW, USED ONCE, AND OPENED THE BOX AND IT WAS BROKEN....USED THEREAFTER ON PLASTIC TRIM TO ROUGH UP FOR PAINT AND IT WORKED OK ACCEPT THE WANDERING, YOU REALLY HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION AND BE ABLE TO HOLD IT STEADY AND THE ITEM TOO.,

Nice Sander
4 Star Review   By Jimmy on Home Depot - Jul 1, 2012

Being my first sander, I'm satisfied with the choice I made. The included vacuum adapter doesn't work, it's the same diameter as the vacuum pipe on my 4 month old Ridgid Vacuum. The only issue I had is the sanding discs I used. I bought the ones that HD has for sale, for use with 8 & 12 hole sanders. If you have an option buy the ones with just 8 holes. The dust is cut down drastically between the 2 styles. The vibration does take some getting used to, but you do not always have to use it on the highest speed setting.

Outstanding Sander!
5 Star Review   By Alex on Home Depot - Jun 15, 2012

After thoroughly researching and weighing in the pros and cons of each brands random orbital sander, I chose Dewalt and I'm extremely satisfied with my purchase. The sander is easy to control, smooth startup, hook & loop feature makes it easy to attach/detach sand paper, perforated holes on the sander pad create sufficient dust removal, and as always I love the heavy duty cord that's iconic of DeWalt. I would've like to have a kit box instead of the nylon bag that is provided (It looks like most of the brands are reverting back to the kit boxes though) and the dust bag can be stubborn to reattach. There were several reason's why I chose DeWalt over the competition: I found the Makita easy to handle, but the dust bag detached way too easily (Which aroused concerns that it could easily be knocked off during sanding and that would not be fun to clean up!), I found the Bosch grip to be too bulky for my liking, and I don't like the placement of the switch on the Ridgid (I gave away my Ridgid finishing sander because the switch was located right below the grip and I would often bump it during sanding)

1 start guy was right!
1 Star Review   By CHILLY on Home Depot - May 29, 2012

Well the only previous 1 start guy was right! I am surprised but this sander pulls you all over the place as if it its random function is missing. It behaves as if it only spins which would pull you all over the work. Unlike the other 1 start reviewer, I do have previous experience with random orbital sanders. I traded it in for the Ryobi and it behaves correctly.

Very Good Sander
5 Star Review   By Xyberion1K3 on Home Depot - May 24, 2012

I stripped some kitchen cabinets, door and drawers. Next after some preparation, I sanded. The finish was smooth and neat. When I stained my project with Minwax, the finish was excellent. I wish I had used my Wet/Dry vac to collect dust; I did not and dust was all over our finished basement. So what, the project turned out great and the basement was in need of cleaning up anyways. You will not be get anything else but the sander into the included bag. Oh yeah, the variable speeds allowed me to hone my finish, to the correct setting. The black part that holds the little dust bag might not hold on if I used my heavy 2" diameter wet/dry vac hosing; I would just improvise. I needed an adapter to connect my wet/dry vac to the sander, I found one that worked. I like how easy the sandpaper sticks to the sander. The sandpaper and sanding pad use velcro (called hook & loop). Once you align the hole in the paper and sander pad, you are ready to go. The paper will not tear off, but when you need to change the paper it comes off easily. The sander is not heavy and it is excellent quality. I have an old Rockwell full-sheet vibrating sander and it can not hold its weigh against this sander. Buy this sander and make your job better/easier.

Please please do not settle for this
1 Star Review   By Ryan01 on Home Depot - May 17, 2012

I hate to be the one guy to down a product, but after using this and a competing brand, I have to say don't buy this. I recently purchased one of these from the local HD and used it for an evening to sand a piece I was working on. I'd never used a ROS before so at first I thought the amount of vibration and 'wandering' I was getting was normal. After about a half hour I had to stop because the vibration was so bad. In addition to that, I was literally fighting the sander to keep it on the work piece - it was all over the place. Like I said, I had never used one before so I thought maybe this was normal. Next day I watched some videos online and decided to return it and try a 'red' sander. This other ROS was only sold online so I waited for it to ship and tried it as soon as I got it. The could tell the difference immediately. Much much less vibration and I could move it slowly in a line unlike my experience with the Dewalt. Maybe I got a lemon from Dewalt, but after what I experienced I would have to say do not buy this product.

Not bad for the price, very soild.
4 Star Review   By desy on Home Depot - Mar 25, 2012

It does the job well, even a little bit louder, more vibration than the Festool's 5 inch, but it feels solid when i hooked it up to a Rigid shop vac. It doesn't leave any circle marks, very clean sanding (with vacuum). Much better than my older Craftman 5 inch sander. I love the soft start and the electric brake, so it stops spinning quick once you turn it off. One thing i like about Dewalt tools is that you can always buy replacement parts online.

Easy to Use
4 Star Review   By GardenLady on Home Depot - Mar 20, 2012

Love this sander - it's lightweight but powerful. Haven't used it with the vacuum adapter, but think it will work great. Sanding disks are so easy to change compared to the old sander I had. The soft carry bag is roomy so you are not cramming the sander into it. I would have given it 5 stars if it came with some sanding disks to start with. So if you purchase this online, purchase some disks too.

Good choice for orbital
4 Star Review   By Clay on Home Depot - Jan 28, 2012

So, I'll be honest. I'm returning this as soon as I can. The finish and sanding quality of the sander were good but its much louder then my Milwaukee. The other issue is it seems to gyrate all over the woodwork unless you just have it sitting on the piece.

Awsome sander. Been making do with competitor sander and a mouse sander. Waited to long for this!! Cuts sanding in half the time and easy to control with the variable speed setting. Also sanding disc change out from course to fine in SECONDS and don't move.

I bought this sander for various projects around the house, I got it with a bonus pack of 35 sand paper discs, great deal. So far it's worked great for everything I used it for. I looked at some cheaper ones but after reading the reviews I decided on this one. I'm glad I decided to spend a little more.

Get what you pay for.
5 Star Review   By Michael71 on Home Depot - Jul 25, 2010

I got this after the wife and I had got 2 Skil orbital sanders like this one(she wanted to help out). I thought those did a decent job, until I burned both of them out after about a week of medium sanding. I went with DeWalt because I had always heard good things about them. After using this sander for about a month now, I can say it is by far the best sander that I have used! Its tough, and gets the job done very well. The hook & loop system on this is ALOT better then the skil ones. They are smaller, and there is more of them(I would say about twice as many). I have yet to have one of the sanding pads fly off like they did on the other cheap sanders I used before. When it comes to sanders....you get what you pay for. Dont be cheap like I was, get a DeWalt!

5 Star Review   By ChrisinMI on Home Depot - Jul 16, 2010

I bought this sander after returning my Milwaukee because no one had a replacement backing pad for it. This sander is way better than the Milwaukee ever thought of being. It has a lot of power, removes material quickly, does a nice job finish sanding, and dust collection works great. The only thing is it's kind of noisy. Not as bad as the Milwaukee though. If you need a new sander I would highly recommend you take a look at this one.

Simply Awesome!

This sander makes light work out of the toughest jobs. Feels great in the hand and well. I would look no further if you're on the market for an Orbital Sander.

5" Variable Speed Orbital Sander
5 Star Review   Home Depot

I purchased two of these sanders to help my brother strip the sealer coat off his log cabin home. This tool was what the doctor ordered. We were working from ladders and scaffolding. The tool is designed to allow several different grips and light enough to work in overhead and long reach positions. The hook and loop attachment allows for quick disc change and the dust collector performs very well. I purchased a third one when I returned home for remodel projects around my home. A must have tool.

Great sander

Great all purpose sander. All sanders miss dust. This one catches more dust than others. Average vibration.

Best sander ever
5 Star Review   By Autodoc on Home Depot - Jun 26, 2009

I am remodeling our office at work - building new desks and storage cabinets. My old sander died an untimely death so I was looking around for a new sander. I have always had good luck with DeWALT tools so thought I would give this one a shot. So far I have completed one of the desks and two of the cabinets and this sander is 5 stars all the way!!!! To date I have gone through roughly 75 to 100 sanding discs - everything from 60 to 220 grit with no problems - this thing is a work horse! I have it connected to my dust collection system and there is virtually no dust left behind. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a random orbital sander!!

Very nice sander
5 Star Review   By member ruddn - Sep 18, 2007

Strengths: Variable speed Comfortable

Weakness: none yet

This is a very good sander if you can find it on sale. I would need to do more research before paying full retail price. I paid less than half that at the popular orange home improvement store by price matching the price shown on their own website. It you can pull this off, you won't need to look any further for a very good sander.

DeWalt Random Orbit Sander
4 Star Review   By member swinghard - May 14, 2007

Strengths: Ample Power, Good Dust Collection, Excellent Sanding Results, Compatible with large number of sanding disks, Carrying Case is Nice to have

Weakness: Pricey

This is replacing a Makita sander I have and it does a great job. The DeWalt cost more and to be honest the performance of both sanders is equal. But with the little bit of extra money I get a carrying case which makes it worth it. I guess? I do recommend this sander, it is very good. Comparison shop and find the best price - you will not be disappointed.

Solid DeWALT
4 Star Review   By member rstorm108 - Apr 22, 2007

Strengths: Very well constructed Fits comfortably in the palm of your hand

Weakness: The variable speed knob is labeled using numbers(1,2,3...)and not the number of RPMS

I have been using this sander on small little projects around the house and it does wonders smoothing any nicks and scratches out of wood, cabinet faces. It is very easy to use. The weight distribution is perfect and holds in the palm very well, and is much quicker then sanding by hand. The dust collection is adequate and is on par with other power tools which have dust collection. This tool has found a permanent home among my tools.

DeWalt makes the difference
4 Star Review   By member rpg99 - Feb 27, 2007

Strengths: -Adjustable speed -Industrial grade contruction -Hook and loop pads wont come off -Nice carrying case

Weakness: -The motor tends to get a little hot, but nothing to worry about. -With any woodworking tool dust gets embedded in every crack and collection could always be better. -Price

A very solid tool that is definitely worth the extra money. I have used this model on many of may recent college projects, which has definitely made the work easier and more exact. This unit keeps the surface perfectly flat and takes half the time hand sanding does. I love the adjustable speed because you can transition from medium density polyethylene foam to walnut or aluminum in seconds.
