Netbooks are the smallest and cheapest of the laptop categories. Netbooks burst onto the scene in 2007 and have gained popularity for their extreme portability and very affordable price tag. Typical weights are less than 3 pounds and prices start around $300.

Typically, netbooks have the least amount of computing power of any of the other laptop categories. Screen sizes are in the 7” – 10” range, ports are very limited, and they usually have no optical drive. The keyboards are very small as well, which may be problematic for those with large hands.

Still, if all you intend to do is check email, surf the Internet and want to be able to take it with you just about anywhere, netbooks may be the perfect choice for you. Just don’t expect to be able to do a lot of multi-tasking or run many multimedia applications.
