How To Buy Guide - GPS Guide

Types of GPS Devices

Once GPS went mainstream, people began figuring out new and exciting ways of using it. Combined with the right software, this technology can do a lot. Here are a few of the most popular types of GPS units:

Active GPS Devices – These GPS receivers are usually used by people working out. The person wears the GPS unit (usually on their wrist), and it calculates their speed, distance traveled, calories burned, and other helpful information. It's like having a personal trainer (with a really good map).

Marine GPS Devices – If you're into fishing or boating, these GPS units will change the way you do things. They act as chartplotters, featuring information on everything from fishing hotspots to water depth to marina locations. Most marine GPS devices are incredibly versatile – they can be used on the water, then plugged into your car to give you directions to and from the marina. (A tip – if you're looking for one of these, make sure it's waterproof. Just in case.)

Handheld/Outdoor GPS Devices – Ever have trouble finding a trailhead? Ever get lost in the backcountry? These rugged GPS devices ensure it doesn't happen. They usually feature a compass, accurate mapping and elevation data, and many allow you to input routes downloaded from your computer. Whether you're searching for the perfect climbing spot in Moab or hiking the Appalachian Trail, these GPS units will make sure that you get there safely.

Vehicle GPS Devices – These are the GPS devices you hear the most about. They've become a mainstay in the urban world. Their primary goal is to get you from Point A to Point B with turn-by-turn directions, but they also include other features like traffic monitoring and Points of Interest databases (some even have MP3 players and weather information built-in!).
