How To Buy Guide - DTV Guide

DTV Over Your PC

For those who are space-conscious (or who want a second TV), the last option is to use your PC as your TV. By simply adding a digital TV tuner, you can watch standard broadcast programming through your computer.

If you like the idea of watching TV on your PC, here are some things to consider:

1) Compatibility

The most important thing to remember is that you’ll need to buy a tuner that’s compatible with your system. There are variations for PCI slots, PCI Express Slots, and USB ports. Consult your PC owner’s manual to be sure which port type you need.

If you’re an advanced user, there are even cards that will let you connect your PC to your TV set – this will require advanced features of the card and extra cable work, so be sure to do your research.

2) Upgrading Your Existing TV Tuner

If you already have an existing PCTV setup, you’ll need to check and see if your TV tuner is capable of accepting digital signals. You may need to upgrade your old card to an ATSC tuner.

3) Desktops = Most Flexible

If you outfit your desktop computer with a TV tuner you’ll have room to upgrade in the future. 21"+ monitors are now commonplace, so you could easily add a larger screen, or surround speakers, should the need arise.

Installation is easy – all you have to do is buy either a TV tuner that plugs into a slot inside your desktop or an external TV tuner that plugs in via USB. All the software is included – just connect the TV tuner to your antenna, install the software and you’re ready to go.

4) Take Your TV With You

Want to take your TV on-the-go? Add a TV tuner to your laptop. These small devices have their own antennas and let you pick up local broadcast TV whenever and wherever you are.

Again, compatibility is important – you can choose between USB sticks, PCMCIA cards, and ExpressCards. Consult your laptop owner’s manual to see which one is right for you.
