I AM THE UNFORTUNATE OWNER OF THIS...
Strengths: NICE LOOKING CABINET
Weakness: HORRIBLE PICTURE QUALITY...EVEN IN HDTV MODE
I AM THE UNFORTUNATE OWNER OF THIS XBR, ALLEGEDLY SONY'S FINEST TELEVISION. I WAS EXPECTING A PHOTOGRAPHIC IMAGE IN THE HDTV MODE...NOT! WHAT I GOT IS A SMEARED PICTURE, AN UN-SHARP IMAGE, POOR CONTRAST AND POOR COLOR QUALITY. THE LOWER RIGHT SIDE OF THE SET IS OUT OF REGISTER. THIS IS TOTALLY UNEXPECTED FROM A SONY PRODUCT. I OWN 6 OTHER SONY TVs AND HAVE NO COMPLAINTS WITH THEM.
A SONY TECHNICIAN CAME OUT AND ADJUSTED THE SET AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. THE SET WAS SO BAD THAT HE OFFERED TO HAVE SONY SEND ME ANOTHER...AFTER ALL, THIS IS A SONY XBR. THE TECH CAUTIONED ME THAT THE NEXT SET MIGHT BE WORSE THAN THE ONE I ALREADY OWNED. I DECLINED THE OFFER. THE TECH FURTHER STATED THAT ALL HIS BUSINESS LATELY WAS SERVICE CALLS FOR SONY CUSTOMERS COMPLAINING ABOUT POOR QUALITY HDTV SETS. I AM TERRIBLY DISSAPPOINTED WITH THIS SONY XBR! DON'T BUY!!!

Strengths: Color quality, inputs, 1080i, feature selections
Weakness: Weight, price, apparent geometry problem, aspect ratio
When I first saw this monitor I was very surprised to see a distinct non-linear bowing on the bottom of the screen when viewing letterbox format. When viewing off air HDTV signal, bowing was also quite apparent on the right edge of the picture. The Sony service tech came and attempted (for 3 hours) to correct the problems with the software calibration. He was successful in only increasing distortion of the picture. A second technician was dispatched 2 weeks later with no improvement. The technician said he's seen this problem before, but there's nothing he could do to make it better. He was reluctant to adjust hardware (i.e. yoke magnets or other). I have registered a complaint with Sony Service headquarters and am still awaiting a formal response from them (2+ weeks now). I have seen this problem, but not as bad on some floor models locally, and this seem to be a problem with this set.
I'm amazed that a product from Sony, at this price, should have such a quality fault.
