HP TouchPad
3 Star Review  productwiki.com - Aug 24, 2011

The TouchPad is a touchscreen tablet PC from the HP company developed in conjunction with Palm. Functioning as a direct competitor to the Apple iPad, this model features a 9.7-inch capacitive multi-touch display with an integrated QWERTY keyboard for optimal communications support. Storage is available in 16 and 32-gigabyte denominations, with internal processing duties governed by a 1.2GHz dual-CPU Qualcomm Snapdragon unit. Running HPs webOS operating system, users have the option to synchronize multiple email accounts through the Microsoft Exchange function with Direct Push technology for automatic updating upon receipt of a new message. A 1.3-megapixel front-facing digital camera is included for video-conference support through services like Skype and Google Talk, with a set of stereo speakers provided for high-quality MP3 playback utilizing Beats Audio technology. TouchStone integration enables users to share and stream content between the TouchPad and HP TouchStone laptops, enabling full wireless connectivity across a common WiFi network. ... PROS: (1) Supports flash- Netflix and Hulu stream very well. CONS: (1) Already dead (2) Heavy- weights quite a bit more than the competition (3) Limited App selection when you compare it Android devices and the iPad (4) no external card slot for storage expansion (5) no 3G options at launch

1 Star Review   By idontreallygiveatoss on HP - Sep 9, 2011

Not a deal, even at $100. Screen came with pixels that are permanently white which are very annoying when either using it as an E-Reader, or watching movies. Major light bleed around the edges of the screen. Operating system is buggy and I can't even get the rotation lock to function correctly all the time, it'll just turn itself off sometimes! Sound is great though, so I suppose that's something.

Great Buy at $99
4 Star Review   By Merc on HP - Sep 9, 2011

I have thoroughly enjoyed my Touchpad since it was delivered. I had been lusting after a different tablet but the price was far out of my reach so, naturally, I leapt face-first on the firesale. This is my first experience with webOS and it has been rather pleasant. I feel that it should have been developed further before being offered in tablet form, however. It can be a bit buggy at times, but when it's responsive, it blows everything else away. It seems as though the webOS ecosystem just isn't ready for prime-time yet. There are many apps that *should* be available but just aren't. The browser is seriously lacking. Honestly, if I had paid full price for a Touchpad, I would have been irate. The TP itself is wonderful, but the functionality is limited by the available apps and lack of support for many file-types and codecs. Without expandable memory and with no dedicated data-transfer USB port, I honestly think that the hardware could have been better thought out. As it is, for $99, this was a wonderful purchase. I have no problem finding wireless networks and getting online. I enjoy the responsiveness, when it is there. Most e-readers cost more than this and cannot do half of what the TP can do. As well, the app selection and native support promises only to get better with so many webOS tablets out there. There are several dedicated groups trying to enhance the TP's functionality even as we speak. With this kind of enthusiasm, the Touchpad has the potential to go very far. End result: For the price, this was an amazing deal and I am thoroughly satisfied.

Better than the iPad
5 Star Review   By JRH1 on HP - Sep 8, 2011

I haven't had either for very long and bought it for my dad basically for email, surfing the web, and Facebook. I think the Touchpad beats my iPad2 on these 3 features. For $99, I'm over the moon!

Awesome tablet
5 Star Review   By wanda78 on HP - Sep 8, 2011

$99...this tablet was a steal! I use it for email, web, twitter, facebook and skype. Awesome! App store is developing, so far I have lots of useful apps. Don't need apps for everything since most of it works online thru the web browser. Love the fact that it is easy to customize using preware. It's really fast and smooth. Wish it had: Video out to TV; apps for audible/netflix; arrow keys on the keyboard; I'm really glad I got in on this deal.

Incredible price. Great product!
5 Star Review   By Ramper on HP - Sep 8, 2011

When i heard the announcement of the dropping of the Touchpad from the HP lineup, I figured there would be a sale - but not to this extent. I was one of the first to get in my order. After receiving the shipment I quickly opened and turned on the tablet. After loading an update and minimizing the logging of the TP activities to a minimum, I noticed an increase in performance. This is one sturdy OS. I really hope HP continues to develop this Palm-based OS to give it the recognition it deserves.

fire sale hp touchpad is win
4 Star Review   By omniskillz on HP - Sep 8, 2011

for the fire sale price the hp touchpad is a no brainer. its quite fun, it is on the heavy side for a tablet. I use it for adobe reader, kindle, games, web browsing and it does all those things flawlessly. its a shame HP did not take a small loss out right to gain marketshare when they first released the touchpad. if you can still get it, I approve wholeheartedly at the 99 149 price points. good luck.

Good product if you know how to use
4 Star Review   By comego on HP - Sep 8, 2011

Most attractive part is the price. The IPS screen, 4:3 screen ratio, build quality are definitely highlights of the product. The battery is fine but not good as IPAD2. No SD slot is somewhat concerned. The major weakness is in the software. I in fact love the webOS at the first place because I was a palm fan before. I am very happy that flash can be opened by the browser and you do not have to install individual apps for different website as IOS. But that is it. Out of box the system is sluggish and you have to do some research to turn off the logging; the update was very difficult to complete without problems; the language support is poor. More important is that there are not many apps available comparing to either IOS or Android. Many people like to have option to read books, but HP is weak on this. Maybe because apple and amazon are both selling books but HP does not have a partner. The bottom line is that after tuning, it is good enough for simple web surfing, video streaming, emails, and limited gaming. It could be better if HP had been more dedicated on the webOS development.

Price is Right but lack performance
3 Star Review   By Seizure on HP - Sep 8, 2011

This HP Touchpad is my very first tablet, although I've played with others before through friends and family members. When I first received the Touchpad, I already knew to upgrade to the latest firmware for faster and more reliable performance. The product wasn't bad out-of-the-box, but it was definitely lacking behind competitors. It was also heavier than other tablets out there. Even after all the firmware updates, my Touchpad was still sluggish. Internet browser took longer then expected to load; pictures imported from Facebook was arranged in reverse order without the possibility to re-sort. WiFi connected fine on my home router, but every time I brought the Touchpad out of sleep mode, its WiFi stopped functioning (even though it said it was still connected to my router.) I had to manually disable and then enable my WiFi connection in order for my internet to load again. And of course, all the browser pages I had viewed before going into sleep mode were lost. The biggest mystery of the Touchpad to me is the lack of cursor keys on the keyboard. Even as I was typing this review on my Touchpad and needed to edit my paragraph, I had to touch the exact spot on the screen in order to edit my text. How inconvenient. All of these issues were known to the HP development team. Hopefully there will be improvements on the next firmware release.

Touchpad with webOS is nice
4 Star Review   By leland on HP - Sep 8, 2011

Overall it's a nice table, which is made from quality hardware component. The display is nice. The performance is good enough for most of tasks. Definitely it worth more than $99. Actually a lot of people will consider buying it for $199. HP management made mistake on the firesale price. It lost more. WebOS itself overall experience is excellent, especially its multi-windows/tasks management system(card based) is very easy to use. Yes, it's too late to the party to compete effectively with Android and iOS. However, it should not be difficult to leverage Android ecosystem if WebOS can run Android Apps. Many users would love this tablet and stay with WebOS. The only issue is the localization. It can display Chinese in the browser, but all menus, labels of the OS and Apps can not be changed to Chinese. I give 4 star rating because of this. Otherwise, I would rate it 5 stars. HP probably made a strategy mistake. There is no way to sell it at $499, and $399. It may be able to sell some for $299, definitely will sell a lot at $199. For $299 price probably it's close to its hardware cost. Since HP is too late to the market, it has to price aggressively in order to be in the game. Now HP quits the game with the firesale $99. Everyone loves it for $99 price.

5 Star Review   By AwesomeMan on HP - Sep 8, 2011

This is the best product that HP ever made by a mile... it's just too bad that they never gave it a shot. Let's hope that they spin off the hardware portion and license the webOS back to the group quickly to get more of these out there. Final Word: A deal at three times the price. Get it!

I wish they had patience
4 Star Review   By UriBraun on HP - Sep 8, 2011

This product suffers from four shortfalls. 1. No patience by management 2. Young app community -- not enough apps yet 3. No GPS 4. No camera app That said, most companies would be jealous to be in this position. The lack of GPS is the only thing that would require a new device. The lack of a camera app should be an easy fix. Apps were being developed, especially considering HP's strategy on the software front. Now for the strengths: 1. Battery life 2. Slick look 3. Can access it as a network mounted drive 4. Hackable 5. Color ereader 6. Mostly intuitive UI 7. Touch keyboard with numbers 8. Phone shows ALL contacts (Skype, phone etc.) 9. Can tether to phone for calls Note: it take a minute or so to get used to closing apps by sliding them off the top. Suggestions: 1. Keep making them 2. Add GPS 3. Provide a camera app 4. Allow categorization of apps -- three panels is weak give me folders, labels or something 5. Allow contact filter to select users that are online 6. Add close app to the menu 7. Provide a pdf app that allows annotating the document 8. Do something with the desktop -- let me customize it somehow. It's empty and waiting for innovation. Overall, I'm impressed with how fast this has achieved so much. A bit of a patience might get this product somewhere.

Love my Touchpad!
5 Star Review   By Covcreek on HP - Sep 8, 2011

I've been using my Touchpad for a week. It is so much easier to view than my smartphone, so I use it whenever I have a WIFI connection. I was easily able to connect my FaceBook and Google accounts, which have all my contacts. I'm still figuring out navigation a bit. Found some good free apps to download. All in all, I'm very happy with the Touchpad, expecially at the fantastic price of under $100! I highly recommend it!

Awesome Product
5 Star Review   By ThrilledInShreveport on HP - Sep 8, 2011

The is the best pad I've ever seen! The keyboard is great and pops just when you need it. All of the Apps are also great! I love Facebook on it, the internet, email and all of the free apps through the app catalogue and pre central. I love watching movies on it and being able to minimize them to do something else and then being able to pop right back in to where you were. It's the first thing I pick up when I get home. Oh, and yes, my husband loves playing Angry Birds on it.

Great pad...no iPad 2 Killer
5 Star Review   By bobblyhead on HP - Sep 8, 2011

Of all the pads on the market...this will have to be number 2. Second only to the giant iPad 2. What's holding it back? Apps! Where are the apps!? Its Os is slower also...not slow slow...but noticeable comparing to the giant. Whats great!? Everything else. The quality, the hardware it packs, and the simple to use webOs. Its foolproof! Too bad they marketed it wrong. It should had been marketed to business people, as it is great at emails, printing! (yes...wireless printing..try that ipad!), stock watchers, and other neat little things that will make your business life so much easier. The screen is gorgeous! It plays full 1080p without hiccups. My gripe...it should had been a widescreen format for movies...but hey...if you do that...then it wouldn't work as well for books, notes, etc. A working man's pad. Oh yeah...buy the touchstone charging dock and the keyboard. Awesome accessories. A great pad...let down by a small app store =(

Not bad for $99
3 Star Review   By mickey225 on HP - Sep 8, 2011

Coming from an Ipad to this I have to say it really isn't worth much more than $99. I find the Web OS to be clunky have hiccups and freeze ups, Dont get me wrong, its definately worth it at $99.. but I would never recommend one to anyone if they had to pay more, there is a reason they decided to dump the platform and it shows.

A Mixed Bag
4 Star Review   By Anonymous on HP - Sep 8, 2011

Comparing the Touchpad to any other tablet on the market is completely unfair considering the vast divide in development for the operating systems. Simply put, WebOS does not have the market that either the iPad or even the Android tablets do, and this limitation in app selection severely hinders the utility of the product. That said, this product still has a mixed bag of positives and negatives and I would recommend it with a caveat. On a positive note, WebOS has potential to be a very intuitive and useful tablet operating system. The syncing across separate systems for email and messaging are fantastic and are extremely impressive. The tablet is also well put together; although plastic and a finger print magnet, I feel it holds its own against earlier generation tablets and the screen has fantastic viewing angles. However, considering the competition, the performance on this tablet is seriously lacking. General application usage is slower than what might be expected, and the browser falls well behind the standards available on other competing operating systems. My other smart devices that are much less impressive on a spec sheet will handily outperform this tablet for the majority of what I desire to do (web browser, email, messaging). All said, I don't regret the purchase and would recommend the product at the sale price I received. However, in competing terms, this tablet does not fare well against the iPad or Android in a number of aspects. Although WebOS does have many strong points and the tablet feels solid, it simply isn't worth investing in a lagging ecosystem and sluggish performance.

Great Device!
5 Star Review   By excaluber on HP - Sep 7, 2011

I've been using the touchpad as mostly a couch surfing device, it's idealy suited for just that. It'll be much easier to bring with me when I travel as opposed to the laptop as well. I've also thoroughly enjoyed the various games and apps as well. Overall, I'm tremendously happy with the product and I'm glad I purchased it.

The first time to buy a pad. It's a great product for its performance! Unbeatable for its price. Also a wonderful OS. The only thing need to improve so far is its web browser.

USELESS
1 Star Review   By cica on HP - Sep 7, 2011

This is the most convoluted set up required. You must connect to wifi before being able to use the product in any way. It will not connect to all wifi connections so therefore is useless on opening. Tech support doesn't know how to connect you to wifi either. After an hour on the phone with them, the solution was to search for another wifi connection somewhere publicly that doesn't have a captive portal... good luck! IF you are fortunate enough to find one, they tell you to update the system so it will connect to all wifi. 2 hours later, the update finally downloaded but you have to push it so it restarts every few minutes. Still doesn't connect to my wifi so at this point... a Useless product. For the first few minutes using someone else's wifi, it looked like it might be kind of nice if slow. Currently it is a decoration.

camera is broken
3 Star Review   By Meggg on HP - Sep 7, 2011

I bought two touchpads for me and my husband at a super deal price. But sadly, the camera in one touchpad was broken after I installed camera API. I heard several cases that the camera had same issues as mine. Why HP don't test them before they get out of the gate? Apparently, HP customer service has nothing to do with the problem, because they sold out everything. Be aware, you have risk to buy a camera disabled tpad.

Best Purchase Ever
5 Star Review   By Kkumar on HP - Sep 5, 2011

This tablet is absolutely amazing! From a pure OS perspective it is much more functional than the ipad. Multitasking is an absolute necessity with a tablet, and WebOS does it right. Unfortunately apps do play a big role in functionality as well, and although there are some great ones, it still doesn't compare to the ipad. If hp had simply realized this when originally pricing the product, it would have been a smash hit! Even now it still can if they choose to be a loss leader!

Love WebOS and HP TouchPad hardware
5 Star Review   By Infor1 on HP - Sep 4, 2011

HP TouchPad met and exceeded all expectations...WebOS is a great multi-tasking platform that should be further developed. Quality of HP hardware is outstanding from packaging, build, and well integrated HP branded accessories. The HP TouchPad should remain in the market...if offered at $250 price point there will be many satisfied customers.

Great alternative
4 Star Review   By stanthecomputerman on HP - Sep 3, 2011

I am a computer tech and a long time Apple lover. Their iPad left me ice cold on the way it was controlled. I have had several Android pads and like them. I bought this TP and have to say I really like it. I l like the OS and hope that it will be developed somehow, and someway. I haven't done anything to it but add Preware and some tweaks. Very smooth and had they sold it at a more reasonable $299 or so, I feel it would have been a winner. I will probably get another when available.Like I stated a great alternative.

I was excited when it arrived. My first touch pad. My excitement waned quickly. It is super slow loading web sites. E-mail...Some times it loads some times it doesn't. A 30 second clip may take minutes to load if it loads at all. There was an up date last week that helped some but loading is still iffy. The app store is a joke.

great touchpad
4 Star Review   By BigWarpGuy on HP - Aug 24, 2011

I like the way the Touchpad is similar to my Pre phone; knowing one helps work the other. It is easy to get it to expand the picture and make it move around. It is very fast when one starts it. I like how it the screen orientation turns easily when one turns the tablet pc.

5 Star Review   By JoshC on HP - Aug 23, 2011

I was in the market for a tablet for a few months before the Touchpad hit the scene. I'm fortunate to have landed one. WebOS is wonderful and even has a strong supporting community. The touchpad easily rivals the functionality of android tabs but could use more app development. Thankfully, its happening as we speak. Bottom line, it may be a long time before you find a better deal on a better tablet!

5 Star Review   By Shluzen on HP - Aug 23, 2011

This is quite possibly the deal of the century! The TouchPad is an incredible product, and could easily be used in the place of a notebook for many tasks. It has the potential to be THE best tablet on the market, all it needs is a few software updates/tweaks, and it'll be perfect. Other than that, for the price, and for how good it is already, it's hard not to recommend this. Grab one, it's second-to-none in terms of e-mail, web browsing, and social communications.

sweet piece of technology
5 Star Review   By etoyguy on HP - Aug 22, 2011

Once unwrapped this black beauty is a sight to behold. Love the WebOS interface, nicely done and I think it is a step up from iPad. Auto backup is a very nice feature as I don’t have to worry about syncing with PC. Excellent audio quality. Love the notification feature and mutli processing which allows me to quickly move between apps or documents. I found performance to be a bit sluggishness a times which after installing the latest update and disabling logs (googled touchpad performance) is almost nonexistent with a much fluid touch response. Would have loved to see what HP can do with the next iteration of WebOS and TouchPad.

Good hardware, software needs tweaks.
4 Star Review   By vcarl on HP - Aug 18, 2011

Everything is feature rich and useful, but there's an uncomfortable amount of lag when doing some tasks. I found that rotating the Touchpad frequently caused whatever app I was in to lock up for a few seconds (2-4). Additionally, I've now had the messenger app lock up in excess of 10 seconds two or three times now, and the calendar app is noticeably slow to change views. Overall I'm pleased with the tablet, but there are a few minor software kinks to be worked out. Hopefully these issues will be addressed in incoming patches, because WebOS is the most satisfying OS I've used in a mobile device.

4 Star Review   By adam5 on HP - Aug 16, 2011

I was very impressed with the quality. Was able to add all my accounts right out of the box. Skype is great! Facebook app is better than ipad. And the price is awesome! Only complant is that it locks up once in a while for about 5 secs. When you switch windows from one web page to another it just freezes for a few seconds. It is annoying, but still a good device overall. I'm thinking that can be easily fixed with a software upgrade.

WANT MORE!
4 Star Review   By BryanB15845 on HP - Aug 16, 2011

I've been waiting since the announcement of the HP Slate. I was disappointed to hear that there would be a delay getting it out, however when I read that HP got Palm I knew what was up. I'm happy with my Touchpad, I wish that I could use my SMC messaging like on my Palm Pre, but support wasn't able to help me get that setup (use Verizonwireless). I've dragged it around with me for the past 3 weeks and I've been very satisfied, but I would like to be able to write word docs or at least be able to save in word. (come on Microsoft!). I'm confident that even though the "They" have had a head start on the pad market, My Pad will catch up. So... GO HP! nice media blitz too.

lots of work left to do
3 Star Review   By sticksabuser on HP - Aug 15, 2011

I'm webOS fan, however I've been disappointed by the performance so far. Random pauses, tons of little bugs, and even some random crashes of the software and the os. This is the only tablet that I want, but in its current form for software I can't recommend it (I would feel embarrassed if friends of fam had to deal with these bugs and pauses) (latest software used 3.0.2). At least they got the keyboard right. On the hardware side, it's decent. Only thing is that the plastic shell doesn't inspire confidence in its durability as mine had a hairline crack in it after only a week of usage with no drops. Either way I'm keeping this tablet. Hopefully HP can iron out all these bugs and fix the performance issues as well soon.

Love WebOS, need more Apps ASAP
5 Star Review   By Major on HP - Aug 13, 2011

I really love the design and performance of the Touchpad and I think it is a great value compared to the other tablets on the market. That being said, I am underwhelmed by the apps that are currently available. How can there not be a Netflix app or a native Pandora app? ESPN? NFL? Come on HP! This is a great device - spend some money and political capital to build out the app market.

Touchpad
1 Star Review   By Msgchappell on HP - Aug 11, 2011

I bought the Touchpad after owning a Blackberry and using Office 2010. The fact is it is a nice pad but falls well short of all it should do. The applications available are weak and costly, there are many applications that you take for granted until you don’t have them. The Touchpad wont sync with outlook and as for simple applications calling customer support is close to calling DELL. The touchpad would be a fantastic alternative to the IPAD IF it simply had the same abilities for applications. HP has a great product but its only half done.

Slick machine, but no SMS, no Citrix
4 Star Review   By JoEbYX on HP - Aug 7, 2011

Certainly the TouchPad is a slick machine, and seeing flash animation on a tablet was dazzling, but, while the ads and specs for it mention you need WebOS 2 for Touch-to-Share to work, they do NOT make it clear that this applies to SMS as well. Looking again at all the ads there is no indication that I wouldn't be able to use SMS with my Palm Pre Plus. Only after I discovered this was I directed to a knowledge base article explaining why. I also thought I wouldn't mind the relative dearth of apps since I don't need a lot myself, but I was also advised that Citrix Receiver was finally available for WebOS, only to find it is a "tech preview," version 0.0.2, which does not work. I have remained loyal to Palm, starting with an M105 last century, and have consistently bought HP products over the years as well. But because of the above, I have no reason to own a TouchPad and returned it. Maybe if get a Pre3 some day and HP gets a more robust app catalog for business users, I'll buy one again.

5 Star Review   By Rayberle on HP - Aug 7, 2011

My first experience with webOS, and I think it is outstanding. The ease of use, and the multi-tasking on the TouchPad are impressive. Very productive device. I am amazed at how much I have grown to like it in less than a week. It has changed my perspective. The new OTA download of webOS 3.0.2 made it even better. Way to go HP. Keep up the good work. I think it is the best tablet on the market!

Today's Pricing
4 Star Review   By Paul2 on HP - Aug 5, 2011

Have one and love it. Lack of apps doesnt bother me too much cuz it is so easy to browse the real web and webOS keeps sites active/open via the cards. iPad doesnt do that. I would get another during this sale but the HP website only reflects the $100 off at the front page(s)! As you go further in the purchase price, the discount reflected is only $50. When will the website reflect the sale price so one can proceed with certainty?

This is my first touch screen Pad. I am use to typing everything in. I just love the resolution of the screen. Very easy to use and get started. Since I am a HP user I was able to immediately start printing wireless using my all-in-one printer. The only glitch I have experienced is not having a HP WEB Operating System on my phone so that I can use the bluetooth feature. (I have a blackberry). My next purchase will be a compatiable phone.

Good tablet with potential
3 Star Review   By Omega64 on HP - Jul 31, 2011

What can I say, I have two other android tablets (both running Android 3.0) that I used for various things. The HP Touchpad with WebOS isn't as good as an iPad or Android 3.0 based tablet, but it is still pretty nice to use from time to time. With a better market for applications for the HP Touchpad it could have better potential than most would expect. As for speed and performance, it is rather comparable to my android tablets and other than a few random resets/restarts it works great. For those who are new to tablets or not that tech savy, the HP Touchpad would be great for them, but for more intermediate to advance users, an iPad or Android based tablet would be more suitable as it doesn't quite have the apps that these tablets do. The Good: Quick and very responsive Easy to use with a slight learning curve The Bad: Not enough decent applications availabe on the market like the App Store or Android Market have available. Thick and bulky compared to other tablets.

about time
4 Star Review   By waternut on HP - Jul 31, 2011

I was getting close to buying a blackberry playbook or ipad. Thanks for finally coming through hp! Ipad is a great device, tons of apps, tons of apple stings attached and itunes is for babies who can't run a computer (and still people struggle to figure it out). I am completely tired of android. I have been using android phones for two years now and cannot handle it anymore. Can't wait for At&t to get the HP pre3 to use with my touchpad. Fluid apps running simultaneously, android claims to have it, but it is so far from fluid i pull my hair out. there are still some items that need the bugs worked out on the touchpad, along with a much larger app collection, but the device is so easy to use it is ridiculous. I love the email app and the calendar app allows me to view my calendar, my work calendar, my wife's calendar, and my secretary's calendar(at the same time)---and edit any of them!!! I can make an appointment on my secretary's calendar...finally...I could back when i had a palm pre and have not been able to since I switched to android. Hp needs to get editable office documents and this thing is fully ready to make you some money at work(by saving you time). beats audio is impressive. I just plain cant wait to get the phone to compliment the tablet

An excellent iPad alternative. Love webOS.
5 Star Review   By vara411 on HP - Jul 30, 2011

I have owned the HP TouchPad for 3 weeks now and absolutely love webOS on a tablet. It just flows better than any mobile operating system on the market... anyone who lives with it for over two weeks will understand. For those who want hundreds of thousands of mostly useless apps, then this isn't the tablet for you. But if you want to see a product that realizes a potential that's far beyond what's being offered on the market in the foreseeable future, the TouchPad is an excellent bet. Easy to use, quality construction (with Gorilla glass), and brilliant display. Highly recommended.

I feel short-changed
4 Star Review   By member GASTURBO1 - Jul 17, 2011

Strengths: WebOS

Weakness: WebOS, no SD card slot

You would think that after sitting and watching other tables hit the market every other week, HP would learn on what to do and not to do to make their table as perfect and as competitive as possible. What we got instead, was a less than average performing tablet, with very limited apps (more coming soon, I hope), limited connectivity, no front facing camera, and an operating system that have yet to prove itself. Although I have already embraced the new WebOS operating system, there are a few things that I’m hoping HP will update in the future. First is the home screen. Just about every other tablet on the market has a list of commonly used apps overlaid on the home screen, so there is no needs to go hunting for them as soon as the tablet is waken up. Mysteriously, WebOS has an empty home screen with a search box saying “Just type” on the top and six familiar icons on the bottom, such as web, email, calendar etc. You must tap on the app shortcut to reveal the rest of the apps then go to a series of tabs that list all the home, downloaded and favorite apps. I think these extra steps are unnecessary and can become annoying after a while. There are some apps that can hinder the table’s performance. I had a hard time configuring the Time Magazine’s free app. It caused the tablet to freeze and I had to reboot the machine twice. There are also a few other apps that can give the 1.2 GHz processor a real challenge. One of the most appealing features of WebOS is the email and calendar interface. It has the ability to combine all your web calendars and email accounts in to one. Although the TouchPad may not dethrone the iPad, or any other established table already on the market, it has the potential to be a top competitor once a new WebOS version is available or simply wait for the second generation.

Fully fits my needs, not all my desires
3 Star Review   By Popologuy on HP - Jul 6, 2011

I am a webOS fan, and have no love for anything apple. If this device had come out without all the hype that the CEO and Jon Rubenstein built up, it would not have been savaged as much in the press. You can't point at the left field bleachers, promise to hit one out of the park, and then dink a slow dribbler to second base. I think it was the exagerrated promises ("We won't release a device until it is perfect") that everyone is comparing the device to, and that is why it is getting slaughtered in the reviews. But, for me, this machine works fine: beautiful screen, minimal lag, excellent response time (it loads web pages faster than my desktop), synergy, mulitasking (just like on my "real" computer), and hp support for outside developers to improve/augment the user experience. It lacks several things which most people consider must haves (especially at this price): rear-facing camera, video-out solution (a true must have for enterprise use), gyroscope, GPS, document editing (coming soon), movie rental/download program, thousand of flatulence pps, etc. But it fits my needs: I would like the movie program since I bought the device for long trips. I would love the machine to have included a gyro and GPS solution so i could use it for stargazing. The video-out solution is not critical to me, but most devices at this price range have that capability. I can live with out the flatulence apps. Besides, we all know that the apps were necessary on apple products becasue Steve Jobs hates Flash - since you couldn't just surf the flash website, the website had to build an application. I recommend the product, but honestly, I bought it at Best Buy and spent a little extra for the buy back plan: I presume that a better piece of hardware is coming out, so I'll play with this one and return it for some credit towards the next and hopefully, fully equipped, Touchpad.
