1 Star Review   By Furious on Sony - Official Store - Oct 7, 2013

I have owned this tv since 2007, and I still have it 6 years later because I just hate the idea of wasting what I paid for it. But that literally happens with this product. I've changed the bulb 3 times already. The first bulb lasted the longest, and every other bulb lasts less than 2 months before the tv tells me to change it. This is a lousy product. The picture has turned green and is a pain to see. I am done with it as well as with Sony. I have tried to complain but their customer support is mean and rude. I even asked the representative if he cared to which he replied "no, I don't." I mean really Sony? Please if you are like myself and still (for any reason) have this tv just stop before buying the lamp. You will lose money in the long run. I suggest a different cheaper brand. I have TVs in my home that were cheaper and still work just like the day I purchased them.

5 years and still the factory bulb.
3 Star Review   By bigd2337 on Sony - Official Store - Apr 25, 2011

I have a 60 inch sony kds-60A3000 and I set my TV on power saving mode. That may be the reason the bulb has so far lasted me over 3 1/2 years. TV runs quite a bit too. I have it set up as a security screen also to view my driveway through a camera. I would recomend a online purchase and you'll save $ over retail price. The main thing also that you wear a clean cloth glove when ever handling the bulb as your skin oils will shorten the life of the bulb. YouTube has videos showing how to replace the bulbs. The only thing I wish I did was to wait a few more months to buy a flat screen thin model, LED model..But the closeout price was unreal at the time..oh well..

It seems that Sony replacement bulbs do not last.
4 Star Review   By REALIST on Sony - Official Store - Dec 20, 2010

Purchased kds-60a3000 jan 8, 2008, today 12/20/2010 the bulb went out. The bulb useful life 8,000 hrs, I guess I used it twice as much 16k. General viewing, gaming, and movies. I noticed all the neg. reviews which is very bad for Sony. I wish Sony can address these issues, improve bulb life, advise consumers what we can do to extend the life of the bulb. Also lower the price of the bulb would be great!

Paying $259.00 a year to watch a $2700.00 TV
1 Star Review   By LaQuinn on Sony - Official Store - Nov 26, 2010

Not only do the bulbs blow up every few months , my optical block went in May. Sony manned up to this only because of a class action lawsuit. I have the KDS-55A2000 model. I would like to know if anyone had success in getting a free bulb from Sony. This is beyond maddness that they can get away with this. The price for these replacement bulbs is ridiculous. SHAME ON YOU SONY. I`m sure the optical block will go soon after the government mandated warranty extension. Paid over 2k for the TV and its been a money drain. MAN UP and serve your customers better.

I was inquiring on a new bulb to buy just in case it went out. I haven't had any trouble out of the tv or the bulb in the 5 years i've had this tv. 5 years and still the factory bulb.

Worst rip off ever
2 Star Review   By allie on Sony - Official Store - Apr 8, 2010

I'm the third person I know who has had this bulb problem and frankly, I fail to see why Sony hasn't addressed all the complaints on this site. When everyone who owns this tv has the same problem it's not an isolated incident, nor should the owner have to suck it up and pay over $100/yr to operate their tv. The KDS60A3000 cost me $3200 at Best Buy - there shouldn't be a hidden operating cost for bulbs as well, not to mention paying to recycle the thing after you've paid to replace it! Sony, you need to read these reviews and kick up the quality control a few notches. Like so many others, I remember when it was a mark of distinction to own a Sony. What a shame; another great name in electronics has sacrificed its quality.

Easy to instal with casing
4 Star Review   By member ashokaggarwal - Apr 8, 2010

Strengths: Easy to instal

Glad purchased the lamp with casing. Using the old casing and installing the lamp in it would have been more difficult and possibly result in more chances of incorrect installation, thus lamp failure

Salesperson Misinformed
1 Star Review   By 59899 on Sony - Official Store - Mar 31, 2010

The original bulb lasted a long time, but the replacement bulb I bought from SONY has now turned green. I corrected the color for the flesh tones for now, but I intend to buy from ebay as another member stated. There is no need to buy the bulb in the housing which saves even more money. It's simple to replace the bulb and reuse the housing. I found the bulb only for $88 and plan to buy two. And, this seller warrants the bulbs. Apparently Sony does not warranty bulbs. I WILL still buy sony products however. Recently I purchased two STR-DH800 receivers and LOVE them. Just because SONY has done badly on these bulbs does not mean the whole company should be avoided! Grow up people. Overall, it's a great TV. Bulbs will fail.

1 Star Review   By johnbgood on Sony - Official Store - Mar 31, 2010

I bought this tv for around 2200 dollars 2 and a half years ago, and it ran beautifully until the bulb went out. Since then it's been nothing but problems, and i feel like ive been stolen from. I would have been better off renting a stupid tv at rent a center, i would have payed less and would probably still have a tv. and what a joke, best buy recommended it. thanks for the burn guys.

As with others, I have had a KDS-60A3000 for about 2-years and have had to already replace the lamp - So more than $125 a year just for the cost of the lamp and the "privilege" of owning a Sony! -- Once Bitten Twice Shy - My next TV will not be a Sony! What happened to the great Sony of old? Now it is charge more, for less quality, and worse Customer Service!

great tv... if it wasnt for the lamp.
1 Star Review   By MARXX on Sony - Official Store - Mar 2, 2010

Sony stinks! What happened to their quality of product. I have owned the Rear Projection TV for 2 years 3 months and am now on my 3rd bulb. Because sony does not sell just the lamp, I have taken to purchasing my bulbs on ebay to save a bundle. The ones I purchase their actually last longer and have a better picture quality and are less than 1/2 the price. If I am going to have to replace this bulb every 6-9 months, I might as well go the cheaper route!!! I would never buy another Sony Tv again. They have just lost another long time customer!

Very poor life span
1 Star Review   By Davy on Sony - Official Store - Dec 27, 2009

I can't believe this is a Sony product after five months everything started turning green until it finally burnt out. The guys who gave this any rating higher than 1 star must have gotten paid to do so, they are the reason I gave this bulb a try in the first place after reading all the 1 star reviews which happen to be absolutely true! I am definitely saying goodbye to this TV and Sony for good. I advise anyone else who has purchased any Sony rear projection TV not invest another dime in a replacement lamp they are a Rip Off!!! Shame on you Sony. What a disappointment.

Bulb Does Not Last and they are BACK ORDERED
1 Star Review   By BACKORDERED on Sony - Official Store - Dec 5, 2009

Unfortunately, the Sony Style Store in Tampa doesn't sell the bulbs, but they sure sell the televisions. The bulbs are endlessly on back order on the Sony website. I paid 2700 dollars for the black screen that once was a television. Sony Style Customer service indicates that there is no telling when they might get the replacement bulb in stock due to the "high demand". That should say it all. The experiances that you see posted are not unique or exagerated. Please do not add to the high demand so that one day I might get a new Sony replacement bulb.

Terrible
1 Star Review   By nate32 on Sony - Official Store - Oct 27, 2009

I can see why SONY isn't doing projection TV anymore. Faulty optical blocks, bad bulbs, etc. Here's some insight: I own an Infocus X1 DLP projector since 2000. I'm well past the life expectancy of that lamp and it's still going strong. So it has nothing to do with living in a dusty environment, or living in a high altitude, etc. The KDS-55A2000 I've only had for 2.5 years. I feel like I'm watching a movie with all the flickering from a high school reel to reel projector. Ridiculous and boooo.

very poor performance
1 Star Review   By Pappy on Sony - Official Store - Oct 25, 2009

The original bulb lasted the longest. Ever since then, I'm replacing them every 6 months. That's unacceptable! It's obvious that Sony knows how long they last which is why they only warranty a $250 bulb for 90 days! If as a company you make a bad product, you still need to stand behind your product. I am done with Sony!

Recycle the lamp housing to save costs!
4 Star Review   By Josey on Sony - Official Store - Oct 25, 2009

I have the KDS-50A2000. The original lamp lasted 3 years and 2 months. Picture was set to vivid on all inputs. I estimate I obtained close to 5300 hours of usage. Which is probably appropriate for max output setting. My suggestion is for Sony to recycle the lamp housing to bring down costs. Same concept as printer cartridges. TV has met all of my requirements to date. Replacement lamp has been installed for 6 days. I will wait and see. I recommended this SXRD TV to my son who bought the 60 inch XBR version. It comes with a replacement lamp. Think of the problem plasma owners have, burn in and when it goes dim they can use it as a door stop.

Bulb Does Not Last and they are BACK ORDERED
2 Star Review   By Frax on Sony - Official Store - Jul 22, 2009

I am on 3rd bulb in less than 3 years and Sony seem to be out of stock so wait time for replacement is long. It is so poor I am actually looking for a backup one for when mine fails. The last one i bought was from rivervalley electronics on eBay and it actually even seems to be better picture quality. Also I bought the extended warranty on my TV and the bulb isn't included so you know how confident Sony is in these bulbs. I was told in store that the extended warranty was a guarantee I would have a functioning TV for 2 years and it wasn't functioning. I complained until I got my first replacement for free but now I have bought two additional bulbs. I am hoping the RiverValley bulb will last longer. The cost is too high, its a bulb. I can buy a laptop computer for almost that price. If it was $50 I am sure they would still make a profit taking advantage of the poor customers that trusted in a Sony product. In a market of huge competition I think this product hurts Sony and I will never buy Sony product again. I am now going to write similar reviews on twitter and at least a few of the big review sites. Maybe even a video on youtube. I feel taken advantage of and its the only thing I can think to do. I just want to warn people of the over $100 dollars a year it cost to maintain the TV.

Lasted only 2 years and 2 months. Rated at 8000 hours which is about 3-1/2 years of use at 8 hours a day 7 days a week. My TV is a KDS-60A3000 which has an excellent picture. I expected the bulb to last longer.

Phillips XL-5200 Replacement Lamp for SONY SXRD Projection HDTV
5 Star Review   By member stratsrus - Feb 1, 2009

Strengths: 1. OEM lamp for SONY SXRD projection TV, manufactured by Phillips. 2. Step-by-step instructions with pictures. 3. Complete unit (lamp pre-installed in housing). 4. VERY easy installation-5 minutes.

Weakness: 1. Lifetime about 2 yrs, based on viewing about 6 hrs/day. 2. High cost. 3. Lamp contains mercury, so old lamp must be disposed of properly.

The "lamp replacement light" on the front of our SONY KDS-50A2000 HDTV started blinking, and the TV would not turn on. I consulted the SONY user manual, and found instructions for removing the lamp, which I did. I could see the filament inside the lamp was burned out, so I called SONY, and they quoted $400 for the service call, including the replacement lamp! So next I got on the Internet and searched for a replacement. Some of the suppliers quoted prices of over $200. I found one on PriceGrabber.com for $129. I guessed that this would be the lamp only, not pre-installed in the housing. So I removed the old lamp from its housing - NOT an easy task - and awaited the arrival of the new lamp. I was pleasantly surprised to find this bargain price was for the entire lamp assembly, and I was glad I didn't have to install the new lamp in the old housing. The best part was that this was the Phillips XL-5200, which is the original equipment installed in the SONY, not a cheap imitation. The other positive thing is that the new lamp brings back the brilliance of the TV picture when the set was new. You don't notice it degrading over its lifetime, but you will definitely notice the improvement when you turn on the TV with the new lamp installed! The colors - especially in High Definition - absolutely jump out of the screen at you! While this was a relatively expensive repair, it was much cheaper than the $400 SONY service call. The only downside is the 2-year expected life of the lamp and the need to safely dispose of the old mercury-containing lamp. I'm hoping I can recycle it a Home Depot, which I know accepts compact fluorescent lights (CFLs, which also contain mercury) for recycling.
