Logitech Harmony 688 Universal Remote Control Review
5 Star Review  audioholics.com - Jul 16, 2004

Remote controls are really the steering wheel behind your home theater system. I remember back in the early days when I would try to show off my system to friends (hold on, this’ll just take a minute – let me grab the other remote...) only to be slowed up by the process of (just another second while I change the input on the TV to component) manipulating all the devices to function in their (could you hand me the DVD remote – it’s the one over there by the coffee table, thanks!) proper modes and configurations. Whew! Once everything was squared away I could begin my demonstration. What failed to be represented in the days of sorting through a bouquet of remotes, was the awe of automation . There is an eloquent and substantive statement made by pressing one button and having your equipment convene for a single purpose – let’s say, play a DVD on the big screen television. The accompanying awe factor might just outweigh the subsequent listening and viewing session. After acquiring my first good universal remote control, my home theater experience was never quite the same.

Great Look and Feel, Lousy Battery Life
2 Star Review   By member ieee_raider - Jun 2, 2007

Strengths: Button placement, Ergonomics, Functionality

Weakness: Battery Life

My only downside to this remote was the battery life. I loved the look and feel of it. Worked great with my components. Super easy to program. I ended up upgrading to the rechargeable model. Our first set of batteries lasted a few months. Next set only a few days (cheap batteries) and our final set lasted about a month (energizers).

Convenient all-in-one remote
4 Star Review   By member sierra_nevadas - Jan 4, 2007

Strengths: One remote to rule them all; programming via web-site; decent battery life; great customer service

Weakness: Activity buttons are difficult to see in dark; some components require custom programming by Logitech

I have had the 676, 880 and 688 Harmony remotes, and have been happy with this one in general. I am able to program all of my components via the web-interface, which it found them all. However, I had an issue with the timing of the RCVR being powered on and a DVD player plugged into the back of the RCVR. Logitech had to do some custom programming for me to get this to work. Not sure why I couldn't do this, but I am extremely impressed that they did the for me. They responded in just a few hours, and I had my problem resolved after just a few email exchanges. Bravo! While I like having one remote, I find that I still keep some of the others around. For instance, the DVD player is a 7-disc changer, and for the life of me, I cannot get a Disk-Skip function to work! The screen is kind of small, so you need to scroll thru many screens to find what you are looking for. Also, it was difficult to emulate all of the buttons on my DirecTV interactive HD-DVR remote. The buttons are small, and the colored activity buttons at the top are difficult to read in the dark, even with back-lighting. I do prefer the 880 remote, even though it is more expensive. I like the bigger screen and color and charging cradle. Only wish it had RF control, but that is the 890, and sells for a whopping $350!!

Harmony 688
4 Star Review

Strengths: Excellent design. Great button layout.

Weakness: Programming is not as simple as they would like you to think.

If you are able, or lucky enough, to get it right the first time then sing its praises. On the other hand, if your not so lucky then get ready to double up on your prozac. This device is excellent in every way. The programming software isn’t. It tries to simplify a very complicated task by using a series of questions. I’ve been down this road before, they never ask the question I need. If they had included a “let start over” option, I would have been happier. If you’re an above average tech. Person, you’ll eventually figure it out, if not, you’ll probably wish you hadn’t tried. As I said, once you’ve got it, it’s great. I am truly amazed on how well it works but getting there was a chore.

FANTASTIC remote
5 Star Review   By member davidh0608 - Jan 8, 2006

Strengths: Easy to set up, very quick to learn, everything at your finger tips

Weakness: A little slow with the tivo responses

I have a Sony Remote Commander AV3000. It took me weeks to get the correct commands and processes down so that I could watch TV/Tivo and I still could not do everything with my surround sound (Sony Dream System). With the Harmony 688 I just followed the instructions on the screen and I could watch a DVD, TV/Tivo, and listen to music almost instantly. The only function I had to reconfigure was getting to the DVD menu. HIGHLY recommend this remote. I'm thinking about buying another for my bedroom system

4 Star Review   By member pudding30 - Apr 26, 2005

Strengths: It does operate all of the electronics I need. Once set up, it is very comprehensive in its control over all of your TV/VCR/DVD/Satellite/Cable/Tuner devices.

Weakness: EXTREMELY SMALL TYPE on the buttons. Couldn't use software on my laptop, had to use Desktop. This resulted in more sneaker networking, but it did work.

Does everything they say it can, but it won't work out of the room for the DISH network PVR, although it will work in the same room. Still, it reduced 6 remotes to 2, not shabby. Even worked on my DVD-Recorder and old JVC D-VHS. Can hardly read some buttons even under a magnifying glass, much less in a dark room. It is lighted, but the type on the WATCH TV/WATCH TAPE, etc. buttons are just too small. Setup takes a long time, but once you set it up, it works like a charm.

Strengths: Perfect for home theatre

Weakness: Numbers slightly small

Very helpful customer service, be ready with your products name & models numbers before getting the remote programmed, one of my best buys. Finally I only have to deal with only one remote. It's fun to operate.

5 Star Review   By member one4thegipper - Mar 21, 2005

Strengths: Smaller than my previous universal remote; easy to use

Weakness: Web site to load IR commands into remote is somewhat slow

I've been using a Sony universal remote for the past 5 years and found that for people other than myself, controlling our home theatre system was problematic. The Harmony remote senses the state of each component of the system and automatically makes changes depending on what you want to do (watch a DVD, watch TV, watch a videotape, listen to music, etc.) It is much easier for anyone to choose any activity that they want. This remote is very easy to use and highly recommended.

2 Star Review   By member docvenzon - Mar 2, 2005

Strengths: relatively easy set-up, no need to program macros for multiple equipment, good online and phone support

Weakness: did not work with my particular TV, mushy buttons, key layout not the best

I had 6 remotes floating around and decided to get a universal remote to replace all of them. I ended up trying the Harmony 688. Initial set-up was relatively easy, just enter what equipment you have in Logitech Harmony's interactive website, and the configuration is done for you. This was definitely a plus. I previously had a Sony AV-3000 LCD remote, and programming macro commands in that remote was really painful. In contrast, the online interactive website used by harmony to configure the remote control was very easy to use. Off the bat, the remote was able to correctly control most of my AV equipment, except for my TV! I had a lot of trouble teaching the remote to switch between video input options in the TV, so I could watch TiVO, DVD or myTV from my computer. I think it was the particular sequence and timing of button pushes that's required to change my TV's input from one to another. Suffice it to say, I never got it decently to work despite great online and phone support from Logitech. In addition, the buttons on the remote control were very mushy. I prefer a stiffer tactile response from remote buttons. The directional pad in the middle was not as responsive as I would have liked it to be. Finally, the button layout on the remote did not particularly suit me. I think a lot of people will find this to be a great remote. Too bad it didn't work out too well for me. It's probably going back to the store.

Strengths: So easy to set up and use!

Weakness: Buttons a little small but great after you get used to them.

This is a wonderful remote! Now I don't have to try to figure out which of five remotes I need. Very easy for women to use too:) My husband was a little surprised that I bought it for him but I hated all the remotes. I guess it was a gift for both of us.

Strengths: The idea is ingenious, one button task control of multiple electronics, interactive online programing of the remote and your unique set up,that you save and can change. Help feature on the remote

Weakness: It doesn't always work as smoothly in my case because of the way my TV has to change the AV screens. the remote itself doesn't feel as substantially built.

I permanently put away 7 out of my 8 remotes. I still like my TiVo remote, but I could just as well use the Harmone remote. I love it. I wish the remote felt heavier in my hand, and the center "OK" button seemed less prone to falling apart. But I may be nittpicking. It's worth the money, especially with rebates.

Strengths: Ease of setup, help button, strength of IR signal

Weakness: Default setup for some components requires user to go through menus to get to controls (eg - PIP controls for tv)

One of the few universal remotes that can truly control everything. Setup was a breeze, simply connecting to the logitech website and answering a few questions on how my components are connected and how I use them for different activities (eg watch tv, watch dvd, etc). Signal strength was very strong, I could control all of my components from 3 rooms away while my original tv remote could only go to the edge of the tv room.

Strengths: Easily replaces multiple remotes. High WAF.

Weakness: Web-based configuration can be clunky at times.

Was up and running within a couple hours of starting the web-based programming task. Currently replaced 6 remotes with this one. Got to 95% of what I wanted very quickly and easily. The last 5% will take a little more effort. Have heard that it uses batteries relatively quickly (but it replaced 6 remotes!).

Strengths: This was very easy to set up. Directions are easy to follow. Works great with TIVO.

Weakness: The buttons could be a little bigger

This is the first remote that I have found that I could get to work with all of my components. Not only that, it worked on the first try. It was easy to set up. No more programming macros into a remote or going through the teaching mode that never seems to work anyway. This remote is awesome.

Strengths: Integrates all remotes and devices into easy to use functions

Weakness: Buttons feel cheap, you need to press hard to use them

This remote is awesome. You can control numerous devices with the push of a button, such as "Watch TV" or "Watch DVD". It is extremely easy to program via the harmony website. I would highly recommend this for anyone who wants to simplify the process of running a home theater system or for those who are technologically deficient.

Strengths: All in one remote......

Weakness: Price pretty high $140's....More consumers would buy if cost would go down.

Remote is user friendly and it seems that anyone can use this remote with know problem. With one touch of a button you can turn on a movie or just watch TV without having your usual 3 remotes or more. I will enjoy this for years......

Strengths: The Harmony 688 was very easy to set up. It controls all of my A/V equipment, and has easy to read menus. It works 100 times better than the original remote for my TiVo.

Weakness: I have not figured out how to control the multiple disc DVD player that I own. I can start playing a DVD, but am having difficulty toggling between other DVDs. It is going to take more time.

I am extremely satisfied with my recent purchase of the HArmony 688 remote. I had four remotes that i was using to control all of my A/V equipment, and most of the remotes were cumbersome and did not have small conveinces like glow in the dark keys , much less a backlight. This is the coolest remote on the market. Set-up was so easy. The website where you go to set-up is user friendly, and it allows you to customize all of the functions. YOu can even rename any of the keys that control your equipment. I use my remote to control a widescreen tv, Direct TV with TiVo, a HDTV set top box receiver, and a Surround Sound receiver with a five disc DVD/CD changer combo (5 years old). This remote can pick-up any codes from any equipment that you might have. I would strongly recommend this remote to anyone that is interested in getting rid of multiple remotes to control thier A/V equipment. It easy to set-up and even easiler to use. My wife was up and running this remote without even going through the onlne tutorial. Too easy to use, you gotta get one!!

Strengths: Nice size & shape. User friendly web interface for programming. A single button press turns on all necessary equipment and configures inputs according to which activity has been selected.

Weakness: Some infared commands were not in the Harmony database, but I was able to "teach" the remote those commands easily. Need to know the model numbers of your components to easily setup.

This is absolutely the most user friendly, most customizable remote that I have ever owned. Because the programming interface is web-based, the list of supported devices is continually growing. No need to send this remote away to be upgraded when new devices become available. Almost every aspect of this remote may be customized to your preferences. You can even set what button presses turn on the backlight, and how long it stays on.
