cool device
4 Star Review   By member Lurker3 - Aug 1, 2007

Strengths: touchscreen, programmable, learning remote, macro functions, backlit screen

Weakness: nothing major: weird shape (wide vs.long) takes getting used to, rubber buttons are not backlit, no RF functionality, not as visually pleasing as other similar products

This is a great remote. It take a little while to get used to its size and weird shape where it is wide rather than long, so not as easy to hold on one hand as the standard remote. The touch screen is very nice, and you can hide screen buttons you are not using. This is also a learning remote. Many other universals come preset, and cannot learn new commands. So if your device is not pre-programmed, or not all the functions of your original remote are programmed, you are out of luck. This device is great in that it will learn the codes from other remotes by placing the original remote behind it receiver led is on the side facing the user, rather then the opposite side, which is different from other learning remotes) and pressing the button. The macros are nice too...allowing you to set one macro so switch on all your devices (E.g. sat/cable box, receiver, and tv) in one action...very nice. Not a big deal, but this has no RF (radio frequency) functionality. So this will not replace remotes that use RF (such as the X10 products, etc). Most remotes are IR (infrared) so you are ok, but keep that in mind if you have RF remotes you are looking to combine into a universal remote. Extra bonus: display time and temperature! :) Also, uses only 2 AA batteries, vs. other similar remtoes that use 4. All in all this is a great device for a great price, compared to other similar remotes, such as the ones Sony makes.

Good Value
4 Star Review   By member seyak - Jul 6, 2007

Strengths: Big Touch Screen Back Light Response Battery Life Atomic Clock Temp Indicator Learning

Weakness: Big Requires two hands to operate Soft buttons labels fixed

I paid $25 so can't complain about the price. Response time and battery seem to be OK. Macros and soft buttons are no too customizable. I guess you need to pay more to have those features like Harmony remotes. Remotes of this type are kind of old fashioned and out dated these days but not bad as backup remote or as a bed room remote.

Acoustic Research AR-R1540 Universal Remote Control
4 Star Review   By member shimq1 - Jul 2, 2007

Strengths: Great price, works with no problems, reduces clutter by letting me store away all my other remotes

Weakness: I have trouble getting used to the 2 hand remote. The touchscreen is cool, but it's not as easy to use as real buttons.

Great price for a great piece of technology. I used the learning function to get the right button configuration from my other remote controls. Now I have one cool looking remote instead of 5 remotes. After about 2 months of use, I'm still not used to the 2 handed configuration and I don't think I'll ever get used to it. Overall, it's a great remote at a great price.

Good as a backup but...
3 Star Review   By member nowlen - May 16, 2007

Strengths: Atomic clock, touch screen, price

Weakness: Bulky, two hand operation, difficult to see even with backlight, long time to program

I bought this as a backup to my Logitech universal remote because of the great sale price. It seems I'm always misplacing my remote or it's across the room when I want it. I've had them both sitting side-by-side on the coffee table for a few weeks now and everybody ignores the AR and goes for the Logitech. It has some features I like but the touch screen lacks the ease of use of old-fashioned buttons. If you need glasses for reading, this unit may not be for you. But, I must say, for the price it does the job and suits my needs.

Best Remote Ever!!
5 Star Review   By member xdr4gon - May 15, 2007

Strengths: Easy to read LCD screen Touch Screen Backlight Great Range Easy to program.

Weakness: A bit big not color

Wow is all I can say about this remote. It can program fifteen other remotes into one! I like the many features it has such as macros. The backlight is a must at night. This works perfect in my home theater so I don't have to fumble around with 5 remotes for cable, TV, dvd player, VHS, and Audio. It is a bit nice, but impossible to lose. It is not quite a logitech harmony since it is not color and does not have a usb interface to connect it to the computer to download controls and updates. But it has a wide selection and is very easy to setup. Has everything you would like, need, want, and more!

Nice touchscreen remote for the money
4 Star Review   By member shakestheclown - May 6, 2007

Strengths: Touchscreen is nice, only displays useful buttons for each component, learns from other remotes, atomic clock/temperature, good mix of real tactile buttons vs touchscreen buttons, cheap

Weakness: Large (usually requires 2 hands), cannot update codes, somewhat out of date by now, backlight does not come on automatically, sometimes has trouble seeing the signal from other remotes

Overall, a very good touchscreen, learning remote that seems to impress most people that see and use it. People generally need some help the first couple times they use it. It is a little out of date compared to some of the new Logitechs, and it cannot update codes. Remote learns well from other remotes, although sometimes it takes 3-5 tries before the remote will catch the signal. Code search occurs automatically and you can basically ignore it until it turns your device off. Backlight doesn't come on automatically, and I have to hit light most of the time before doing anything else. Can control quite a few devices, and hold a good number of custom commands for each. Haven't used the macros. Touchscreen needs a firm press and I prefer this, but some may wish it more sensitive. Of course, it shows a lot of fingerprints, but that should be expected. Overall a good remote, but only if you can find it under $50. Over that and you're probably better off with a Logitech. I went from having a TV remote (Universal remotes do not have proper code for my new TV, it must be learned), Universal remote for Cable DVR box (would not control TV or Home Theater), RCA Universal learning remote (controlled TV poorly and did not have great layout for DVR usage) down to just this remote.

not a bad remote
3 Star Review   By member flyingtigerace - May 3, 2007

Strengths: learning ability, strong signal, sufficient soft keys and hard keys, big screen, and price.

Weakness: very dim screen, unable to sync with atomic clock, temperature reading not accurate.

This remote has a lot of functions. It can learn all the keys from my 3 remotes. Do not buy this remote if you like to toss your remote around the room or have bad eyesight because the screen is hard to read. It cannot sync with the atomic clock probably due to my location. Despite its shortcomings, I think it's worth the money because it does its job probably just as well as a $200 Sony touch screen remote.

powerful remote with a good price
4 Star Review   By member geneman - May 3, 2007

Strengths: atomic clock, indoor temp. indicator, not bad learning ability

Weakness: size is a little big, poor manual instruction

I have played with this remote for almost one week. So far I am pretty satisfied with purchase. Found code for APEX TV and DVD player easily although I have some troubles to find my Onkyo HTIB with this remote even with its precoded code. However, so far there is no problem with the learning abilities. Make sure use the IR port face you to use the learning abilities. Although you need both hands to hold the remote, but with 30$, it is a good buy.

Moderately decent product
3 Star Review   By member laakm - May 2, 2007

Strengths: Can handle most devices. Easy to program.

Weakness: Very bulky. The display resolution could have been better.

At current prices, this unit is quite a bargain. It functions as promised allowing you to control multiple devices. The learning function works well. The unit is however quite bulky and you need to use both hands to use it. The display is not very high resolution and while the blue back light helps, a sharper display could have improved the product. The battery compartment cover is loose and I had to secure it with a piece of tape. While I am happy with the product, the next remote I buy will have to be significantly smaller.

Cumbersome but good for the price
4 Star Review   By member boles608 - Apr 22, 2007

Strengths: Price, multiple functions, touch screen

Weakness: Have to press hard on the screen, it gets full of finger prints, it's also rather large

I bought this remote and I will have to say it's pretty nice. The nicest remote I have ever owned. It works well for what is needed to do. It took a bit of time to program but it seems to work well for all of my electronics. It sure does collect finger prints though. I have only had it a couple days but it seems to do what I want it to and that's all I can ask.

Great Remote
4 Star Review   By member messkit - Apr 22, 2007

Strengths: The price, aility to learn, atomic clock, touch screen

Weakness: Size, weight,

Overall a great remote. It is definitely not worth more than $50 but has great learning ability and the atomic clock function is very cool. The overall size and weight are drawbacks, along with the orientation requiring two hand operation.

Great Remote - No idea why it is so cheap??
5 Star Review   By member nicholaspapagiorgio - Dec 23, 2005

Strengths: Easy to set up; comfortable in the hand; nice user interface; fully customizeable; displays room temp. and time...

Weakness: Nothing (yet??)

I researched this remote for almost a month and only found one review in which the user stated that the remote could not learn properly and further research revealed that this seems to be the general consensus on the internet with regard to this remote. Well, let me tell you that this is absolutely incorrect. Probably they did the same thing I did at first. When first attempting to use the learn function, I aimed the remotes so they were facing each other (as is common with learning remotes). It turns out there is another IR on the back of the remote (the part that faces you when you use it) that is used for the learning function. Once I figured out the right IR to use, everything worked perfectly. I have successfully set up my XBOX, Sony TV and VCR and my Kenwood Receiver, all without a glitch. Also, this remote has a huge library of preprogrammed codes, in fact, even my XBOX was listed!! All and all, this is a great remote and is even better than my Sony Touch Screen that cost over three times this amount. It’s such a good remote that I ordered a second today, just to have on hand if this one breaks!!
