RCA Scenium HD50LPW175
4 Star Review   By member rjfrey1 - Jan 23, 2012

Strengths: Great picture, lightweight, good sound (for the speakers it has).

Weakness: Doesn't always turn on, fan is loud (sometimes).

I bought the RCA in May 06 and just replaced it with a 60" LED. I had very good luck with this TV, unlike many others. Never had to replace the lamp, just had the loud fan for the past month. From the sound, it just needs some lubricating spray, I think. I love the picture on this TV, but I wanted to go to 1080P now. The details are very good, colors very good and hardly any motion blur, unlike many LCD sets. I own a 50" plasma, 50" DLP (the RCA), 37" LCD and a 60" LED. I would put the plasma first, then LED, DLP and LCD. Too much motion blur on the LCD. Would I buy another DLP? Definitely. Would I buy another RCA, probably, but haven't.

DON'T BUY IT !
1 Star Review   By member Army2Cop - Apr 18, 2007

Strengths: It has a great picture when it works, Which is not a long time.

Weakness: The TV, parts, and customer service.

This is the first time I ever posted a review about any product I have purchased. This time I felt I had to. Buying this T.V. was the worst mistake I have ever made. The Tech. has been to my house 4 times, and my TV is still shutting off. I get about 10 Min's. of TV time before it starts shutting off and truning on every 5 Min's. I purchased the TV in Sept '06 in Nov. the problems started. It is now April of 2007. and my TV is still not working. Parts are in back order and it will take 2 months to get them. After many hours on the phone and arguments with RCA customer service reps. I now am waiting for a replacement set. which I was told it will take about 4 weeks. I don't think I want one. Thank you RCA for your wonderful service and products.

DO NOT BUY THIS!!!!!
1 Star Review   By Notvforme on Bright and Sleek - Mar 31, 2007

Strengths: Great picture- no doubt

Weakness: If you want to "rent" this set, go ahead and buy and MAYBE you'll get 1-2yrs- NOT acceptable!!!!

After 14 months, the picture went out, the bulb needed to be replaced -according to the factory set sequential lighting indicator blinking on the front- but, after replacing the bulb($280) it was NOT the problem, after a service visit- another ($200), it is still NOT working- The repair guy offered to take it to the shop (~$600)est to MAYBE find the problem!!!I refuse to put any more $ in this set- is it too much to ask for at least 5 years?! We are now watching a 15yr old TV until we resolve this- ugh! suggest you check forums on tech sites to see the agony

Do Not Buy RCA Products
1 Star Review   By Michael Barker on Bright and Sleek - Nov 29, 2006

Strengths: Looked Good While it lasted which wasn't long.

Weakness: My Tv died after 6 months. No one can repair it

After 4 visits from service techs and 4 different parts 1437.39 dollars worth of parts and 2 months still doesn't work. RCA customer service is a joke. They keep telling me to wait for service. They won't even extend my Warranty for the 2 months it has been down. I don't think they will ever fix it. I just make my monthly payments on my $2000.00 paper weight. I am hoping someone will break in and steal it. then I can get a new non RCA TV with the insurance money.

Save your money
1 Star Review   By member tbowen1018 - Sep 3, 2006

Strengths: Picture quality

Weakness: Reliablity

Don't buy this television. I purchased this unit in October of 2005. The light assembly failed in February. It took 5 weeks to repair because of parts availability. Unit failed again in June, same problem. After 6 weeks of discussing with "Customer Service", they agreed to replace the unit. This took another 3 weeks. After just 2 days, the new unit failed with a different problem. Spend your money on a different manufacture. RCA quality is suspect and customer service is non existant.

RCA DLP Parts
1 Star Review   By member zippypinhead1001 - Mar 23, 2006

Strengths: Picture is good

Weakness: Parts not available

I have had the HD50LPW162 for 14 months. I have liked the TV, the only slight problem is a delay between the sound and picture during certain types of programming. As with any DLP TV, the bulb blew out. RCA is telling me that it will take 6 months to get a replacement bulb. All calls to RCA have been worthless. They do have bulbs to sell more TVs though. I do not recommend getting this TV until the parts problem is fixed. This is unacceptable for a part as common as a bulb. Go buy a Samsung DLP.

Awesome TV
4 Star Review   By member trnasha - Feb 4, 2006

Strengths: Great picture - detailed blacks, excellent grey scale

Weakness: out the box colour settings are way off from accurate

It is the 3rd HDTV set I have owned in 4 years and the first one that caused my wife to stop dead in her tracks and comment on the picture quality. It truelly is awsome. The black boarder around the screen, something RCA calls floating picture design really ads to the feeling of 3D image and a real sense of the action happening in my living room. The detail is impressive - even in the dark areas. Rich blacks that I have yet to see on any other rear projection DLP or even rear projection LCD set. I have compared this set to Sony Grand Wega & Hitachi rear LCD and was very impressed with the high level of color shading and accuracy on the RCA SCENIUM. Something that looked very artificial and cartoon-ish on the Hitachi as well as the Sony offering. I can not comment on the audio as I use an external HT audio set-up for deliving sound. The features abound on this set. 2 FireWire inputs, DVI, Guide Plus+ Gold, built-in ATSC tuner.... I find myself using the Internet browser more often then I expected making it a truely interactive experience watching cable TV. But where this set really flys is with live sporting events in HD - Monday Night Football is like being there in the stadium. CSI on CBS is good but the football games on Sunday and the one Hockey game I have watched in HD are the best I've seen. A couple of turn offs would have to be the very poorly designed remote control (I expected much more for a set at this price) and the very ugly stand (my wife's comment). 2 negatives I can deal with given the performance of this product. I am MOST impressed and would highly recommend it if you are shopping for any type of HD set!!! Give it a serious look

Scenium DLP not recommended
1 Star Review   By member JamesDavis9 - Jan 31, 2006

Strengths: looks nice. picture is crisp.

Weakness: the cooling fan is SO loud that it is downright annoying

It is very difficult to listen to any program on a soft volume because the cooling fan is so unbelievably loud. Quiet moments in movies are destroyed because the fan noise becomes so overbearing. I am returning my set.
