SONY KDF-50WE655 50" LCD Projection TV
1 Star Review   By member abelincoln80 - Aug 17, 2009

Strengths: Will convert into a fish tank nicely!

Weakness: You will need to buy a lamp every 3 months because that's about how long the lamp will last. I usually by 2-3 at a time to view my dead pixels.....GREAT value my A$$!

The set was working fine until thousands of dead pixels appeared. Although a known flaw of the Sony WEGA LCD Projection TV, Sony will not pay to fix the set. I have purchased numerous Sony items over the years (first one was when I was stationed overseas …I guess just another way to screw the military) and I will not purchase another Sony product and I will inform all my family and friends and inform the local military bases of my problems with Sony. Maybe the military bases will ban Sony products …I can only try. I still can’t believe it, Sony using the same tactics as American automobile companies; they’ll let you know there is a design flaw but they will not fix it …But they will direct you to the nearest Sony repair shop.

KDF-50WE655 Home Theater
5 Star Review   By member ihernandez81 - Jan 5, 2006

Strengths: Picture, Sound, Picture, Inputs, Picture again, HD is Excellent! Easy to use remote (after you work with it)

Weakness: Expensive stand, get a stand from Best buy with Swivle top! Then you can watch tv from any angle!

I've had the TV for 14 Days now and with everyday I watch HD or a DVD I am more and more happy with my purchase. What made me happier was that when I watched standard tv channels they looks great, just as my other normal tv's. A lot of people complain that the picture sucks on standard...One suggestion, GET NEW COAX in your house. My house is new construction with new cables, I have HD from Comcast and the picture is perfect, the InHD and InHD2 channels are impossible to stop watching. I compared it to the newest technology out there by JVC HDILA and the image is much better and sharper and it doesn't have a warp at the edges, I couldn't stand that it made me sick to my stomach watching football games. The Sony is clear and sharp and the image is colorful and the blacks are perfect, if you have the right settings...it's not ready out of the box, but then again what fun would that be, also..you don't need to get the HDMI cable for this tv, the Component cables are great...no complaints on this tv at all!

Don't do it
2 Star Review   By member Robor - Oct 20, 2005

Strengths: Small footprint Decent picture

Weakness: Defective bulb Screendoor effect Poor black reproduction

I've had my Sony for 15 months and the bulb just blew out on it. Of course the bulb is only warrantied for 1 year despite it being a known defect on these sets. Do yourself a favor and buy other than Sony. They can't seem to make a decent product anymore.

Strengths: Excellent picture. High definition is a must if you really want to appreciate this picture. Bought tv in January, sat In box for 2 months while I finished basement. Set-up was easy. No problems.

Weakness: None so far. Lost high def. once Cable co. told me to take out cable card with tv off and re-insert it. This work.

I hear people complain about remote as far as watching a DVD on video 1 and having to press the video button another 7 times to get back to regular TV. I just enter the channel I want and it takes me there. You don't have to do the long way.

Sony 50" LCD WEGA
4 Star Review   By member jnorris1 - Aug 24, 2005

Strengths: Price....got it for $1900.

Weakness: I think the picture for regular broadcasting is kinda weak, but I hear thats because regular broadcast is done in 4:3 so the TV streches the piture to 16:9. Is this true??

I have DirecTV coming out to set up HD on Thursday(Aug. 24 2005), so Im not going to judge the set until I check the HD channels out. Standard viewing is average, but I bought it for HD. DirectTV is currently launching satelites so they can broadcast over 150 channels in HD by 2007. I read that ESPN2 will go HD in January of 2005, so thats nice to hear as well. I was going to get the 42", but for a couple hundred more I decided to go with the 50". On top of that they(Best Buy) threw in a 5.1 home theater system and a DirecTV HD receiver. Of course I also purchased the extented warranty. I also purchased an off air antenna which clips on the dish and will have them install that when they install the new HD dish. I'll keep you posted as to how the channel look once the HD is ready to go.

Doesn't support native PC resolutions
3 Star Review   By member wiredtothemax - Aug 22, 2005

Strengths: Bright picture

Weakness: Doesn't support standard PC resolutions

I bought this to replace an older tube set & to connect to my Media Center PC. When I did the research I assumed (incorrectly) that HDMI/DVI would work correctly with a PC it is a Sony after all. Wrong. Video played from the MCE PC usually is has the top cut off and it's not very good as a PC monitor. As another review stated you can't set unique video settings per input. It's too much work to tweak the PC settings to watch a movie then set it all back to watch TV. As an aside.... it works well with my Media Center Extender because the composite signal is something that the TV can recognize. Other than that it's decent TV for watching HD cable.

Sony KDF-50WE655 50" LCD Projection TV
5 Star Review   By member NERVE - Aug 15, 2005

Strengths: Great picture; brighter than most LCDs; lightweight for size

Weakness: No complaints so far

I have had the TV for about one month connected to dish network receiver and DVD. Don't have HDTV channels yet. Picture is unbelievably bright and clear. I also have a Mitsubishi 62" DLP. I actually like the Sony LCD better. Remote control is not all that intuitive, and need to cycle through inputs. However, can delete unused inputs so no big deal. Overall extremely happy. You can get a 3 year bulb and TV extended warranty for about $400 which is well worth it

VERY DISSATISFIED WITH THIS PRODUCT! Won't recommend it to others!
1 Star Review   By member gc_king - Jul 8, 2005

Strengths: Picture, sound and price is okay

Weakness: Very POOR quality!

I am very dissatisfied with the performance of this TV. I bought this TV on December 2004 (Brand New) and on March 2005 the lamp blow off. In other words, the TV won’t power on. No picture! I had this repaired by Sony. It took a week for them to fix or change the lamp. So no TV for a week! After they replaced the lamp it now worked again. But after another 3 months (June 2005) the lamp blow off again. The TV won’t power on again so I have to wait for them again to service my TV. It took a week again for them to visit my home and fix my TV. So again no TV for 1 week. It was really a HASSLE! They told me on the first time they repaired my TV that the lamp would last for 18 months but it only took 3 months and it stopped working again. IF YOU ARE WILLING TO CALL SONY EVERY 3 MONTHS THEY THIS TV IS FOR YOU. It is cheap for a 50 inch TV but the quality is very very POOR! I WON’T RECOMMEND THIS TV FOR THOSE PEOPLE WHO ARE IMPATIENT.

Strengths: A picture is worth a 1000 words, or in this case one word... BRILLIANT!!

Weakness: None worth discussing

Picture and sound are fantastic. HD is amazing, I can't watch anything else anymore. Can't wait until 2006 when everything has to be broadcast in HD. The only small drawback, is that regular broadcasts are not that sharp.

4 Star Review   By member raedward - Mar 30, 2005

Strengths: Excellent HDTV picture, elegant chassis, good sound quality, CableCard-ready, good black levels for LCD projection, plentiful inputs

Weakness: Mediocre grainy picture with analog and normal (non-HDTV) digital cable, "red push" that requires professional calibration, lamp blew out after 4.5 months

My previous TV was 36-inch Sony XBR tube set, but I was eager to experience HDTV, and wanted something more maneuverable than a 250 pound CRT. I didn't want to spend the money for a plasma, and I am still concerned about the long-term reliability of plasma sets. I knew I wanted a rear-projection DLP or LCD set, and my 2 finalists were the Sony and the Hitachi 50-inch. I have had very good ownership experiences with all my Sony equipment, and I was reluctant to test Hitachi reliability with a $3000 purchase. Unpacking and setup was very easy. Because the whole unit weighs only 80 pounds or so, my wife and I could easily lift it on its stand. The sleek, silver chassis fits with almost any stand and room decor. Operation had been flawless until the projection bulb suddenly blew out after 4 1/2 months. When it blows, the television will not operate - no sound - just a flashing red "LAMP" indicator on the front panel.

Strengths: size, picture

Weakness: sound

The 50" WEGA LCD tv is a decent overall flat panel HDTV. It is a great value if you're looking for best bang for the buck. Picture quality is sharp and what one would expect from Sony televisions. Haven't had any problems yet. I would recommend this tv if you're looking for a good quality flat panel display that looks sharp and performs well--also, if you're not looking to spend from $3000-4000 for a plasma tv.

Strengths: Vivid Picture; Easy to use remote; Remote can control all components is easy to program. Good Sound, Light weight, lots of video inputs.

Weakness: Switching between all of the possible video inputs (nine) can take some time and if done to quickly you can easily pass your desired choice.

I would and have already reccomended this product friends. It has a bright vivid picture that can easily be adjusted for brightness and zoomed for size. And if you want taylor the picture (hue, contrast, color) you can. The speakers produce a clear sound that is more then capable of filling a 20X40 ft room. The price of a Projection LCD, a slim 17 inches, is much less than other tvs of this caliber.

Strengths: Very good picture quality. Easy to operate and have a SD slot for viewing pictures

Weakness: The only weakness is the remote control. The buttons on the remote is too small, beside that, there are no noticeable weakness.

In one word"Awesome." I waited four sleepless nights for my delivery from a dealer. The picture is just awesome and especially with the HD built-in tuner. I would buy this TV again without hesistation.

Strengths: Outstanding Picture, and HDMI/DVI input for my PC.

Weakness: One Video setting for all inputs.

I am not going into the outstanding features of this Display. One would be a moron to pay a dime for a Plasma. Anyway the only problem is that the Video setup is for all inputs not each inputs, for example, I have a Media PC connected into the HDMI, DVD into the Component and DTV into the S-video. Everytime I change the video input I have to change the video display setting to get the optimal display. and if you set the video to normal (for 4:3 pictures) and then you change to DVD (16:9) after watching the dvd for 10 min or so the display will revert to 4:3, so you have to back and change to display to 16:9 kinda of annoying.

5 Star Review   By member jcclarkie - Dec 28, 2004

Strengths: picture, color, clairity, many features, side angle viewing improved. It is a Sony. Does not weigh a ton. (84 lbs)

Weakness: Not viewable from floor close to screen. on board Speakers a little weak.

Great picture, color and clarity. A great alternative to Plasma at reduced cost. Improved Black white definition compared to older Rear projection units. Improved viewing angle from side. I have this system hooked up with Sony receiver and Infinity TSS750 speakers. It is definitely a big screen feeling and sound. I have Charter cable and clarity loss from analog signals are apparent but not the units problem. The digital channels are very good but not as clear as DVD hooked up with component video and Coaxial digital sound connections. This unit has 7 video inputs and is cable card ready. I would definitely purchase this item again and reccommend it. I would not reccommend the TV stand from Sony but one from IKEA for about $100. I purchased the "OPPLI", it fits the TV and Accessories nicely. Note that I also purchased a Sony receiver approximately at the same time from different vendors. These items were eligible for a $100 rebate from Sony. The Sony site lists the prerequisites to the rebate to include: 1. It necessary to purchase both the TV and Receiver at the same place at the same time. However, the "Terms and Conditions" as listed on the rebate hard-copy form does not specify this. Thus, I submitted the rebate with all copies as stated on the rebate form via hard copy and snail mail. Do not register the purchase on-line but do everything by Postal Service. Check their web site for specifics. I received the check 09 Jan 05. I guess Sony realized their mistake and followed through with the $$$. Good for them.

Strengths: Picture quality better than expected, the quanity of inputs is more than sufficient, easy to understand setup guide, and I like that you can change the projection bulb from the front of the TV.

Weakness: The remote control is functional, but has small buttons.

Even though I have had this TV for a short period of time, the picture quality is better than I expecred in fact it's very close to top shelf Plasma units. The TV is easy to set up and the number of inputs is more than sufficient for any thing you would want to add. I also like the light weight of the unit compared to its size. One of the reasons I chose Sony is that a friend of mine has had one for over 6 months and he just can't say enough good things about it.

5 Star Review   By member MallRat - Dec 26, 2004

Strengths: Picture is eye-popping. Remote was easy to setup for DVD/VCR/ & Sat. tuner. The tuner made it possible for me to get all 6 local PBS channels instead of just 2 plus all network Hi-def.

Weakness: Sony stand over-priced. Satellite card does not work in cable card slot. Jump button in awkward loction.

I never knew local PBS had 6 channels available. Built-in HD tuner revealed this and all the HD channnels on network and local UHF channels. Cancelled my Satellite hookup of local channels as my garage attic installed antenna pulls them in fine with this TV. Purchased IKEA $100 TV stand instead of $350 recommended Sony stand. Works great, looks great but do not have safety tie-down to keep unit from tipping forward since I have no little children at home. Seems very stable. Can not hear the light-bulb cooling fan unless TV sound is turned off. VERY SATISFIED with purchase and neighbors are oohing and aahing (as am I) over pix quality.

Strengths: Great Picture. Lightweight. No dead pixels. Blacks are fine with a little tweaking. No burn-in issues. With built-in HD tuner, it's a great product for the $. Can't beat Sony quality.

Weakness: Remote has to be pointed directly at the tv. No CC button on the remote...you have to go through the menu's to turn it on.

Most of the PQ issues with this TV are the signal it's getting from the cable company or DTV. The picture is outstanding with a good signal. SD PQ is much better if you use a splitter from the wall. One to HD STB and one straight in to the TV. I've tried several HD STB's and they all ruin the SD/Analog channel signals. I shopped around and am very satisfied with my purchase. Today was day 30 and it's a keeper. I kept waiting for something to go wrong with it, so I could return it within 30 days if needed, but have had no problems whatsoever.

Strengths: nice video, even with comcast analog. HD channels are un-real (when the TV has video on the screen)

Weakness: Only have this TV within 24 hours and I have to call tech support.

Got the TV at 7PM, and I was able to successfully turned on the TV and watched it only 2 times. The rest was audio without video, even when the source is from DVD with component input. I woke up this morning, spent time with Sony customer support, and they directed my to a local repair service. I thought Sony fixed all these problems with WE610, but I was wrong.

Weakness: Remote is nice sized, but not intuitive to use. The TV itself has no problems.

This TV can be summed up in one word, WOW! The picture is great, crisp and BRIGHT, almost too bright. There are several settings to adjust the brightness, which are useful. The TV looks great in the room, not the big box of a standard projection TV, and without the sticker shock of a flat screen, a great compromise, without sacrificing performance. Fun added features such as freeze frame and PIP. Easy set up. I was afraid my wife would look at this huge TV and get mad. After seeing it, even she was impressed and happy, and she is a tough audience. Sound is fine just using the built-in speakers. I’m planning to contact by cable provider, so that I can replace the converter box on top, with a simple card that plugs into the back of the TV, and then use supplied TV remote! If you are going to get a stand, which it needs, I would shy away from the Sony model, it’s overpriced. Tech Craft model #SWE50, was styled specifically for this TV, and it looks great!!! Well actually, it was designed for last year’s model. Because of this, two small plastic rings on top that hold the TV from sliding, have to be adjusted a little bit, so they fit the slightly redesigned bottom of the TV. Very easily done with a ruler, but it’s well worth the effort. By the way did I say WOW about this TV, it really is. I cannot stop watching it!

Strengths: Looks, size and the clearity of the picture. It has all the bells and whistles, including a HD tuner.

Weakness: I haven't found a weakness yet. The remote control is a little hard to get used to, but nothing to do with the TV.

Last week when I got my new TV, I wasn't sure what to expect. I used to have an old style projection unit. I can not believe the progress. I installed the Sony "Dream Theater" DAV FR8 and can't stop watching. The sound is fantastic along with the picture quality. This is the best I've seen, without going to the real "high" end units. I would buy again and have reccommend to all my friends. My cable company installed the cable card in the rear, I made him read the instructions, and it works perfect, without an add on box. Super!
