InFocus ScreenPlay 5000 LCD Projector Review
4 Star Review  audioholics.com - Feb 3, 2006

I can't say it enough - the ScreenPlay 5000 is a torch. I have seen better black levels in a projector, but I have had to sacrifice ambient light capability every time. There are some improvements that could certainly be made in this unit to be sure. I'd love to see better containment of light from the projector so that leakage is not a problem. The fan could indeed be quieter and there really needs to be an M1 cable or adapter sold with each unit. With all that said, the ScreenPlay 5000 is the perfect projector for someone looking for a hybrid use device that can handle Sunday afternoon football as well as night-time theatrical presentations in the home.

Infocus Service is not good!!
2 Star Review

Strengths: GREAT PROJECTOR

Weakness: HORRIBLE SERVICE FROM INFOCUS!!

We have an Infocus...that we have had for about 4 years. It's a good project until it comes to repairing it. It wasn't working properly so, I took it to a repair shop only to find out that they can't locate the part because they don't make it anymore and Infocus won't sell us one. Infocus said...We don't sell parts for your projector...I said, so how do I get my projector fixed. They said send it to us and we will repair it.I sense a little monopolizing going on. They sell the projectors cheap, but they get you down the road by not selling you parts so you have to take it to them fix...ah I see how it works. So, lesson learned... if you buy an Infocus, beware you can only get it fixed by Infocus or their Service Distributor...who have the parts or can rebuild them. I do like the projector itself...just not the service of Infocus! Of course...I was upset, because now I have to pay for the diagnostic fee of the local repair shop...which has been in business for years and doesn't care for the Infocus product because of the difficulty of locating the parts. He told me to stick with Sony..Mitsubishi..Toshiba next time..known Brand Names that stand behind their names and will sell you parts at anytime. :)

Great projector for its price
4 Star Review   By member maverick11359 - Dec 5, 2007

Strengths: Very Bright for 1100 lumens

Weakness: Blacks need help

I've owned this SP5000 since 2004 and love the picture quality and smooth picture source identification ......It is an allround great projector. It has one problem though, which has happened from the moment of near new ,Pray that the lamp lasts . My first lamp lasted 400hrs 98 days just out of factory warranty ( 90 days ) .The replacement lamp back in 2004 cost me $550AUD.It's second lamp is still going at 2100 Hours later, but I did install a new lamp at the 2000HR mark which cost $440AUD ,that lamp lasted 80days ( 190HRs )and I had a hell of a time getting a replacement under warranty from Infocus ,it took 3 months ,they are absolutley hopeless nobody wants to deal with them .I install HT projectors for a living so my projector is installed correctly and on a rubber low resonance projector ceiling mount which i had to take pics of to prove to Infocus support that its mounted correctly. In the end great LCD projector just Infocus is a shocking manufacturer to deal with .

SP5000 projector
5 Star Review   By member jahsenvoy - Mar 30, 2006

Strengths: Quiet, easy to hook up

Weakness: narrow range of zoom.

I like this projector - its my first one so I don't have anything else to compare it to yet - however, it was easy to set up and the image looks great. My only complaint is that the zoom could allow for a little more image size adjustment - this isn't a problem if you have the projector in one spot all the time, but if you plan on moving it from location to location regularly, it would be nice to have more adjustment in the size of the image without having to move the projector closer to or further from the screen (it does has some zoom adjustment, but not much).

InFocus SP5000 projector
5 Star Review   By member myblubu - Mar 30, 2006

Strengths: Bright, 720p, HDTV compatible

Weakness: Expensive replacement lamp, no 'whisper' mode, Need special cable to upgrade firmware

Just got this about 2 weeks ago and love it. Only down sides are those listed in the weaknesses above (Infocus wants $400 for a replacement lamp, no quiet or whisper mode to save bulb life and reduce noise, and you must have a special cable to upgrade the firmware). The projector is rated at 1100 Lumens but I think that is conservative, it is really bright! The Tilt Leg is kinda 'flimsy' but it serves the purpose. The complaints I voiced are really minor when you look at all the rest of the good features. The InFocus Rep told me that this projector had a automatic keystone feature based on the projector's tilt - NOT TRUE (unless I have not figured out how to work it) but there are 2 keystone buttons you can press to get the correct image squareness - however I believe it will automatically invert the image if mounted upside down - maybe that's what he meant.

4 Star Review   By member frankii - Mar 22, 2006

Strengths: elegant,hdmi inputs,hd ready

Weakness: no power lens

For $700, can't beat it!! You can carry this thing around without taking up alots of space. For DVD movies, games, and pictures, this is the bang for bucks. This projector is better to use on a moderate lit room than dark room. Black color level is not as great as DLP but is acceptable.

Outstanding HD projector
5 Star Review   By member jilebi - Mar 22, 2006

Strengths: Low cost This is true High Definition ! 720p resolution. Light Cannon. Very bright. Can be used even in ambient light and does not need darkroom

Weakness: Blacks are not the best. But at this price and brightness, who cares ?

Simply outstanding ! Best bang for the buck currently. Biggest stength is that it is very bright. Does not require any dark room. Ambient light is ok with this projector. Also at this price, it is a true high defintion projector at 720p. Would highly recommend it.

Great Value
4 Star Review   By member rwynne - Mar 16, 2006

Strengths: Great Picture, Low Price, Quiet, 'Smart' interfaces, nice and bright.

Weakness: occassionally overheats

I purchased the SP5000 for use in a home teather. I use it for HDTV, DVDs, console games, and occassionally teaching classes using a PC. Given that you have high quality input and cables (its sensitive.) the picture quality is top notch. Two friends who also have projectors frequently comment on how much better this looks than theirs. I'm also very pleased with the intelligence built into the unit. When I switch inputs (power something off and turn something else on) it automatically switches ports and configurations. Only downside is it occassionally presents a message that its too hot and turns itself off. This has happened twice in three months of heavy use. (more than 3hrs per day.)

This Projector is impressive
5 Star Review   By member Jetthurm1 - Jan 29, 2006

Strengths: Clarity, quietness of projector, size of projection at 11-13 ' is huge (fits 106x60 matte gray screen)

Weakness: Too early to get full HDTV hookup

I looked exhaustively for a reasonably priced projector that had the goods and could reasonbably provide the definition I wanted. I am certain this with the current discount is the best buy for the dollar- Infocus 5000.
