Beautiful TV with excellent picture quality!
5 Star Review   By Yorick on Sony - Official Store - Mar 7, 2014

There are many TV options out there but I'm glad that I stick with Sony. The picture quality is brilliant, colors are bright, the blacks are deep and has a smooth refresh rate for gaming. The 3D works perfectly as well, it really pops out! I mainly bought this TV for viewing movies and gaming and I'm very satisfied with it. The price is worth it :)

Went BAD after 2 weeks, 3rd unit shipped
1 Star Review   By JaybePR on Sony - Official Store - Feb 22, 2014

My 1st unit went bad in the 2nd week back in December. after a lot of calls to Conn's Furniture (Houston, TX# and no help I call SONY customer service #Spanish# and I was help by Alejandra, she was super helpful. Then 3 days later after call SONY they contact me back to inform me that the part was not in stock and they will send me another unit in 5 to 7 days. I received the TV this week #2/18/14# and NEXT day I was having the same problem, the TV will not power ON, I have to disconnect from the power outlet and wait about 2 min and reconnect then it will power ON. By the way, I pay on 12/13 for a brand NEW TV and 2/14 I have a remanufactured TV send to me bay SONY. I call them and they will send me a 2rd unit..... What is wrong SONY, I went to Conn's Furniture this weekend and there was 2 other units of the same model #KDL-70R550A# and ask one of the sales guys and he told me that they were having problems with this model, he did not know what kind of problems.. The only good thing about all this problem is that SONY customer Service where super helpful with me, very professional #Spanish and English) but the product quality is not like they used to be, I think that next time I will think twice to buy a SONY product, nothing like what they used to be.

Bad out of the Box . .
1 Star Review   By Ruiz on Sony - Official Store - Jan 3, 2014

What a bad experience this has been !! bought the 70" from All Times TV and it took almost 3 weeks to arrive in California, when I finally got my hands on it, I was excited and could not wait to get home and unbox the unit just to see how it was going to look on my brand new entertainment unit, after I opened the box, I went ahead and connected the TV to the cable box using new HDMI cables, it worked great for almost two hours and then it turned off by itself, I tried to unplugged and plugged back to another outlet but it did not turn on, i called All Times TV to see if they were going to help me but they said that i have to deal direct with SONY, called SONY and they offer to send a Service Center to fix it but after a few hours they call me and inform me that the part was on back order and it was going to take about a Month to get, then they offer to send me a replacement but they need it me to provide them with my credit card info. i have never experienced something like this before especially with a company with good back ground like Sony. i am very disappointed with this transaction, hopefully this turn out well after i get my replacement TV whih is not going to happen until 10 to 15 days from now.

5 Star Review   By GEHII on Sony - Official Store - Dec 23, 2013

What can I say, the picture blew us away with its bright edge to edge clarity. But the 3D was off the hook. I bought the move "The Avengers" as my DEMO movie. It was my first 3D movie purchase. Once we had walked through the set up (cake), I put in the movie (using our PS3 - 3D ready unit) and put on the supplied glasses and was just amazed at the beauty that is passive 3D. I am still playing with settings, but I am in love.

I have got to say this KDL-70R550A has been in the house for a few weeks now and am I glad I made the choice. This Internet, 3D set is better in person then it shows in the stores. I looked for a few months comparing and must admit I have zero buyers remorse.

Awesome TV!!!!
5 Star Review   By Timewarpone on Sony - Official Store - Sep 24, 2013

Best Bang For Your Buck!!! I have had this TV for a few weeks now and WOW!!! this TV is HUGE!!! Brilliant picture quality. The 3D effect blew me away. Even standard SD Programming looks great. If you are experiencing connection issues with 3D than make sure that you are using a v1.4 HDMI cable 10.2 Gbps or faster. This is a must for 3D!!! This TV converts any input to 3D. Not the same impact as 3D Blu-Ray but very good. This is my first 3D TV. The biggest reason I didn't take the leap years ago was because previous models were ACTIVE technology which required ACTIVE glasses. I had read way to many reviews about Active glasses being to heavy, causing headaches and difficult for eye glass wearers to wear, which I am.. This TV utilizes PASSIVE 3D Technology. The glasses are very light weight and easily fit over my eye glasses. I sat through Avatar and Cars 2 both in 3D without any issues at all. The only area I felt that could have been improved upon was the sound. There are 2 down firing speakers with no bass at all but the sound was acceptable. I did see a "SOAP OPERA EFFECT" with some of my HD programming but it comes and goes. Never with a Live HD broadcast such as a baseball or football game. No artifact or motion issues while watching a football game in HD and no ghosting issues either. I had no issues at all with the remote and start up time was about 8 seconds after I hit the on button. The only adjustments I made was to turn off the light sensor in the "ECO" menu under settings then I used a simple calibration DVD with good results. The adjustments were minor at best. I do not place much emphasis on the internet capabilities since I already have a host of internet devices in my home and a wireless 3D BD/DVD player so I can't comment much in this area but I did hook it up wirelessly to my router in order to receive updates automatically. Overall the best TV I have ever owned!!! Simply Awesome!!!

More than I expected for my upgrade to 3D
5 Star Review   By SonyfiedOperator on Sony - Official Store - Sep 4, 2013

When we got this TV for our move into 3D, I didn't realize how intelligently it would work with the new Sony AV receiver that we upgraded to for 3D pass-through. The TV senses when the receiver is on and when the Blu-ray player is selected on the receiver. That automatic sensing tends to save some manual button-pushing for setting up for the next thing I want to watch. I am certainly glad that each component is aware of the others.

5 Star Review   By Beachnsun on Sony - Official Store - Sep 4, 2013

We purchased this 3D TV for our main room TV. Sony has outdone its self with this one. I cannot believe how true to life the picture is. The 3D picture is amazing, our kids love watching their favorite movies on the TV. I would recommend this TV to anyone who loves watching sports and movies!

Sony KDL-70R550A
5 Star Review   By cpuman on Sony - Official Store - Sep 3, 2013

I purchased this TV on July 4, 2013. Everything I own before this was Sony except for my 65" Mitsubishi HDTV. This TV has blown my every preconception of what a TV can be and do, out of the water! The clarity is breathtaking. I have now had time to look at this critically and it is truly amazing. And, the 3D, whether on a TV channel, app or Blu-ray, has left me speechless. I can't tell you in a review what this TV has meant to my wife and I except to say that we are now re-watching all of our movies because they look so very clear on this TV. It is like looking at them in the theater for the first time. The apps are plentiful and wonderfully easy to work with. We have found a whole new world with the apps that we never new existed. It was extremely easy to connect the TV to my Wi-Fi network. I have now received 2 software updates and it works perfectly. The Sony Blu-ray connected to my Sony receiver then back to the TV through HDMI. With all components off, I hit the open drawer on the Blu-ray and it turns on the receiver, changes to the correct sound input, turns on the TV and changes it to the correct input. I put in a 3D Blu-ray and it automatically detects the 3D and sets it up for me. All of this by simply opening the drawer the hitting close. No hitting power on at each device, finding all the correct inputs, etc. It doesn't get any better than this! Sony has absolutely outdone the industry once again. I am so glad I got rid of the Mitsubishi TV for the Sony KDL-70R550A Bravia. Finally, the ability of this set to show my Samsung Galaxy Note mobile phone screens #all screens including the home screen# on the set has been wonderful. I play Real Racing 3 on my phone, but on a 70" TV, it looks like you are sitting in the actual car. Once again, it floored me. This set makes me give Sony a big thumbs up on the technology packed into the set. Also, before I forget, the apps have an internet browser built right into the TV. I do everything on the TV that I would do on my computer, just without a computer! Thank you so much Sony. Great job!

Good Picture, Nice Size, and Simulated 3D
4 Star Review   By Telxonx on Sony - Official Store - Aug 19, 2013

The good things: 1. Out of the Box picture defaults are good enough for casual viewings. Users, however, could opt to fine-tune to their tastes using the Custom Setting option. 2. A 70" screen size is a huge estate to watch sports and movies. With 12ft. viewing distance should put you right in the middle of the actions. 3. The Simulated 3D is a nice to have feature compare to other HDTV in its size and price range. Now the not so good things: 1. Intermittent Black-outs (The LED Backlight shut offs) when playing HD source signals (BD, Stream, etc...) with color spacing settings other than RGB. 2. Cannot connect wireless keyboard and/or mouse to the TV, have to use USB wired types which somewhat inconvenient since most of the USB cables are around 6 ft. long and you need to be 10-12ft. away to really see the picture without seeing the individual pixels!!!! A simple driver to be included with the next Firmware update would be nice. 3. HDMI1 ARC and Optical output could only allow Dolby Digital and PCM signals pass-thru, no luck with DTS signals.

we were upgrading our 47" sony tv. we looked at several models, samsung, panasonic and LG. when we found out sony had a new 70" model, we were excited. we had compared pictures in display rooms before, and we always thought sony was tops. the new 70" sony is no disappointment. very bright picture, true colors. we had heard about motion flow artifacts, but we have not experienced any noticible problems. our guests have been impressed. one already invited himself over every sunday once football season starts. another said if she had this set at home, they would watch it so much that her and her husband might never speak to eachother again. overall we are very pleased with our purchase and would recommend this TV to anyone interested in a quality 70" picture.

Good Picture, Nice Size, and Simulated 3D
4 Star Review   By Telxonx on Adorama - Aug 19, 2013

AndyMike
5 Star Review   By AndyMike on Sony - Official Store - Jul 24, 2013

The R550 series is a really unique display from Sony. It's their only 70". It's Passive 3D. It's a mid priced TV compared to the Sony Flagship models. Sony is to be congratulated for jumping into this area, especially considering the release of their new 4K sets. This series represents the best "bang for the buck" TV from Sony since the A3000 series. The R550 displays the typical screen uniformity issues seen with most edge lit LED/LCD's. That being minor clouding but very little flash lighting. Black levels are nothing to brag about but colors are very good and contrast is better than average. First thing a new owner must do is go into the menu and turn everything OFF in the ECCO Mode. You'll find some very good setting recommendations at AVS Forum.

Really let me down
1 Star Review   By livingproof on Sony - Official Store - Jun 23, 2013

I was really excited to get this TV. Always wanted a bigger TV with passive 3D and finally Sony released one. This TV has great 3D, accurate colors, very minimal artifacting with a screen size this large. Clouding of the screen killed it for me - fills most of the screen and is seen in darker rooms and dark scenes. Returning today.

Best bang for the buck, size does matter
4 Star Review   By JustNed on Sony - Official Store - May 30, 2013

Picture Quality: Better over EX series, with a more natural color, better PQ results after calibration. All TV enthusiasts say that PQ cannot compete with the W, HX or X series. It is true, but for me, all that matter is the size. If they had a 70" W series. but the price is going to be double and 4K will be main stream for 2-3 years from now, so think about it. 3D Experience My previous TV was a Sony KDL-55EX720 and I can tell you this TV blows that one away. Watching 3D on the EX series is just painful, the dizziness, cross talk, and expensive active glasses. Non of my families wanted to watch a 3D movie again. But the 70" R550 is passive 3D, meaning the glasses on cheap(4 free with purchase). You have the better 3D experience because the TV is bigger, so you are more like in the movie theater. Dizziness and crosstalk are gone so you're eyes don't get tired over a 2 hour movie. I re- watched Avatar 3D and it is just as good as the imax experience. Sound improvement: The speaker is louder than my previous TV. Works with my sound system, audio return works great. Apps: Youtube Netlfix Hulu, Facebook Amazon The apps will localize the characters now when using Youtube, the EX series could not display foreign characters, so you only get boxes of characters. Price: More expensive than Vizio or LG or Sharp but definitely worth it, much better quality. Warranty: Get it from costco for cheap

Brilliant Picture and 3D
4 Star Review   By fyesoft on Sony - Official Store - May 1, 2013

I generally like Plasmas for their better picture quality (I already own 5 HD TVs and this is the 6th one). The only reason I decided to go with LED TV was there's no 70" Plasma in the Market. And my 60" looks too small in my great room - possibly because of high ceilings. After researching Sharp's 70" TV I decided to wait for Panasonic to come up with a 70" Plasma, but then Sony came out with this. It was decently priced, had 3D, there were no reviews. But I decided to take a chance - given Sony's reputation. I must say I am not disappointed! The GOOD: Overall Picture Quality: Overall picture quality is good. I would say it is awesome given that it is not a Plasma yet Sony was able to produce brilliant blacks. 720p Quality: Picture was not pixelated with 720p output from my Verizon box. I was able to see bigger picture without any quality degradation due to bigger size. It was really surprising. The picture was at least as good as on my 60" Plasma on 720p. 1080p Quality: I put in Avatar bluray movie and played it. I turned off all the lights to see how darks appear. Even with factory settings the result was amazing. After looking at the picture quality of this TV I can no longer argue with my friends that Plasma is superior than LED. 3D: This TV uses passive 3D!!! And this was a pleasant surprise. I like passive 3D better than active 3D for two reasons. 1. In passive 3D TV produces two images at a time, while each lens in your polarized 3D glasses can see only one image which feeds different images to both eyes - resulting in 3D image in your brain. I like it because instead of glasses completely blinding your each eye one after the other some 240 times a second (active 3D), your both eyes just see different images - which I have found to put less stress on your eyes and brain. 2. Passive 3D glasses are cheap - these are the same one used in theaters. You can order around a dozen for less than 25 bucks. And they don't need to be recharged and they are light in weight. Compare that to an active 3D glass where each cost a minimum of 50 bucks and you have to recharge them and they are not as lightweight as passive. 3D Quality: Again, I restarted Avatar in 3D mode and the result was just WOW!!! My three year old daughter when walked across the TV I almost screamed that she is going to bump in the guy - but wait - the guy was in the movie. I am not kidding it happened a few times - that is when I noticed that 3D is just amazing - and it does have a pop-out effect usually experienced only in theaters. May be the screen size helped in producing life sized images. Now the BAD: Menu's are not intuitive and has a slow response time. But I wouldn't have given it 4 stars just for this reason. The reason I gave it four stars is that when changing resolution (i.e. when PlayStation goes from playing bluray video to home screen and back) the screen goes blank and TV stops responding to commands. I could still hear the sound but no picture. I have to turn it off and back on and I start to see the picture. This is most likely a manufacturing defect. I still have to contact Sony about it (as I just got TV last night). Will update the review when I have this resolved. Tip: I had my PlayStation connected with an old HDMI cable which worked fine with my old TV. When I connected PlayStation to the new TV with the same cable I was able to see the menus and stuff. However when I try to play a 3D movie the picture would go blank and I would hear sound after long pauses. I remembered reading somewhere that 3D requires newer faster HDMI cables. I had some newer HDMI cables in my stash. So when I changed it everything started working. So if you are unable to play 3D movies try a newer (I think ver 1.4 is required but I am not sure - just google it) HDMI cable.

Best Brand Period
5 Star Review   By ROBREY on Sony - Official Store - Apr 25, 2013

I needed a large TV for my living room and Sony did not have anything larger than 60" at that time so I was compelled to buy a Sharp 70" 3D TV# But as soon as I learned that Sony is releasing the KDL-70R550A on April 16th, I returned the Sharp 3D TV right away and preordered the KDL-70R550A# I received the TV 3 days later with the free delivery! WOW and I mean WOWWW! This TV is purely awesome! Talking about perfect precise colors with resolution as close to an Ipad# Then the 3D, it's mind blowing! You will not see any double edging or blurring from the image that you typically see from other 3D TV# The images remains clear with no distortion at any angle or distance# I also owned a previous 3D TV from Sony KDL-55NX810 that uses those emitter and shutter glasses but this new unit uses the same technology used in movie theater that only uses those polarized glasses and even better# Yes, those 3D movie theater glasses will work# The 240Mhz refresh rate is far superior than anything I have ever seen# Also much improved from that of the KDL-55NX810# I watched the UEFA Champions League and OMG, it's like having a front row seat in the stadium# Here's my staright forward first hand comparison on a scale of 1{poor} through 10{best} to the Sharp 3D TV vs the Sony: Sharp = 2 ; Sony = 10. Sharp claims a 480Mhz refresh rate which is a joke! Glad I returned that TV. The Sony is worth every Penny. Combine this TV with a premiere sound system and you will never want to leave your house anymore.
