Sony Bravia XBR-55HX929
4 Star Review cnet.com - Jul 5, 2011

THE GOOD: The Sony XBR-HX929 series produces deeper black levels than any current LCD or plasma TV, giving excellent overall picture quality. It evinces accurate shadow detail and color, very good in bright areas; offers plenty of video processing options; and can properly handle 1080p/24 sources. It has a beautiful, thin-profile exterior design with Gorilla Glass, and its Internet suite includes numerous streaming services and widgets as well as built-in Wi-Fi. THE BAD: This extremely expensive XBR-HX929 shows some blooming artifacts, and its picture deteriorates more noticeably than usual when seen from off-angle. Its menu and Internet service design is lackluster, and Sony does not include 3D glasses. THE BOTTOM LINE: One of the best-performing LED-based LCDs weve ever tested, the expensive local-dimming Sony XBR-HX929 competes well with the top plasmas.

Sony BRAVIA XBR-55HX929
4.5 Star Review productwiki.com - Apr 25, 2011

The Sony BRAVIA XBR-55HX929 is a high definition 3D TV that works with Sony active shutter glasses. This is the same as the Sony BRAVIA XBR-46HX929 and BRAVIA XBR-65HX929, but has a 55 inch screen. All other features are consistent between the three models, with a Monolithic Design created to blend in while off and attract attention when on. Cornings Gorilla Glass is used as a cover to provide durable and light weight protection. High contrast is maintained with Intelligent Peak LED backlighting, and fast-moving subjects are rendered clearly through MotionFlow XR 960 technology, which synchronizes the backlight with the liquid crystal movement. Online content is accessed through built-in Wi-Fi, and BRAVIA Internet Video and Qriocity are available as well as Skype functionality. Further integration with other equipment is facilitated by rear two-way IR inputs. Features 55 in LCD display, Intelligent Peak LED backlight 3D capable with Sony active shutter glasses ... PROS: (1) looks good - features a sleek design with thin bezels (2) built-in Wi-Fi - doesnt require an expensive, proprietary USB adapter (3) LED backlit - uses less energy than competing CCFL-based sets (4) future proof - supports the latest 3D technology (5) superior LED backlighting - uses full-array technology ... CONS: (1) glossy bezel/stand - attracts fingerprints and dust

COMES UP SHORT
3 Star Review By BORINGJIM on Sony - Official Store - Nov 5, 2013

This TV is the best! We highly recommend it. Set up is a breeze! We took our time looking and comparing, and reading a lot of information about 3D TVs, and right out of the box this Sony XBR55HX929 proved our choice to be the right one. The intense detail and color in the pictures for TV, movie, and 3D viewing is phenomenal and beyond anything we could have imagined. The 3D glasses (battery) have comfortably fit all ages quite well (so far, age 8 through adult); including over prescription eyeglasses. Buy high speed cables for best results. It has a no-glare screen. The TV speakers are just fine and we have not found them to be any less powerful than our prior analog TV - we often run TV shows without powering up additional speakers. Side angle viewing is never going to be the same as sitting in front of the TV, but the little bit of fading that can be noticed is not significant by any means. Syncs well with the PS3 but in order to charge the DualShock controllers, the TV has to be on (for us, this is not a consumer friendly feature and is a significant flaw because sometimes you just want to charge a controller but not have the TV on). The only two cons are: 1) the lack of it having a screen saver (a wonderful feature that is surprisingly missing); 2) Closed Caption does not come on when "mute" is pushed (a great feature on our prior TV, especially when a word or sentence spoken by an actor is muffled, it was easy to go back and mute and see the words). With the Sony TV, the CC has to be specifically turned on and off through a menu. Unfortunately, such features or lack of them can only be discovered after buying a product; however, none of the cons would prevent us from buying this TV again!

Quality is amazing, support not so much...
4 Star Review By HenryS on Sony - Official Store - Dec 12, 2012

Well, I started out my new TV search by getting the Samsung UN55D8000Y. I wish I had listened to the bad reviews. Right out of the box, I had problems with clouding and bleeding, so i returned it. I chose the XBR after having many good years with Sony products. This TV has been amazing so far. The picture quality was not as good as the Samsung's at first, until I played with the settings for a while, then the true picture potential came out. I have a Denon receiver, which the XBR works well with.

Excellent Picture Quality & Great Customer Service
5 Star Review By NewYorkSteelo on Sony - Official Store - Oct 18, 2012

Recently, I decided to upgrade my old 40" Sony XBR4 (which still works great and is now on my bedroom) with this new TV and all I can say is WOW! The picture quality is superb and so much better than the competition when viewed side by side at the electronics store. The blacks are truly black, and I had to do very little in terms of tweaking the picture to make it look slightly better out of the box. Watching sports on this set is a dream, gaming is immersive, and watching movies in 3D was a great experience. However.... The set that I purchased initially had a slight defect. There was a dark spot on the left center of the screen (barely noticeable) but once noticed it was hard not to focus on it. It did not appear to be dead pixels, but was more like a shadowy dirty spot. I contacted Sony about this and they were great. They not only offered to replaced the TV, they also offered a 2 year warranty on the replacement. I could not complain. The replacement was sent to me with "white glove delivery" where the delivery guy came into my home, set it up for me, then packed the damaged model and took it with him back to Sony. All this was at the cost of Sony. The whole process took about a week and a half, but I am very satisfied with the service overall, and the new flawless TV. Based on this overall experience, and the quality of the TV, I would recommend considering a Sony over all other brands. You cannot go wrong and will be one happy customer, as I am today. Highly recommended.

Best TV ever made
5 Star Review By Sulfone on Sony - Official Store - Aug 13, 2012

The quality and clarity of the picture on HD and SD is unbelievably great. I was skeptic about 3D TVs before buying this one. It all changed once I started viewing the 3D programs. This has many technological advantages over earlier Sony XBR TVs. It is very easy to instal and getting access to internet programs like You Tube, Yahoo etc. is just a child's play. You will be happy with your purchase as I am now with this TV and also was before with my earlier Sony XBR TV.

the picture quality is the same as last year's model. very slight improvement with 3d content. The blooming is still happening, the local dimming doesn't work as good as it claims. huge disappointment for a 55 inch TV that's over 3 grand.

Truly the Best of the Best
5 Star Review By Jude3 on Sony - Official Store - Jan 23, 2012

If you want the best TV on the market, look no further. This TV has stunning picture quality and better than any other TV that I have seen. The TV looks great in my living room with its slim design and brushed aluminum finish on the stand and around the edges. One thing to consider is that the speakers on this TV are kind of weak and i recommend having an external sound system of some sort. This TV has many built in apps and internet features. Also, this TV gets better and better because of the updates it automatically receives. The last update brought facebook, twitter, and Youtube HD. Youtube looks great on this TV with the new update. I'm so happy with my purchase and I recommend this Tv to anyone looking for the Best TV with all the bells and whistles and is willing to pay the premium price for it.

Amazing picture quality
4 Star Review By AGFA on Sony - Official Store - Jan 4, 2012

Considering poor performance of my old Sonyericsson Xperia phone which I had to switch over to Samsung's Galaxy S2, was thinking if the same applies when it comes to TV. So was a little skeptic in deciding between Samsung vs Sony initially. However brought this piece from Amazon not with complete confidence though. To my surprise, it's a master piece of a TV in picture quality. Haven't tried 3D as my perspective is that it's still an immature technology. As with internet connectivity, suggestion would be to hook it up using a cable as it seems that Wi-Fi breaks off quite frequently. I am still holding my fingers crossed over few comments on Amazon that there appears vertical bars on TV presumably after around 90+days and if that were to happen, I would bid adieu to Sony forever considering the price paid........

Excellent Black, contrast and performance
5 Star Review By mybmw68 on Sony - Official Store - Dec 28, 2011

Bought mine at BestBuy, Winnipeg. I've been looking for a long time for this one and i got mine on October this year. From out of the box, the picture is so clear, crisp and just too bright. Well, depends on your eye's expectation. After a month, my tv was calibrated by geek squad. Honestly, i wasn't happy on the result after they calibrated my tv. The $299 amount for calibration is not worth. I ended up calibrating the TV myself. I used Spears and Munsil disc for calibration and for comparison purposes I've used Disney WOW calibration disc as well. After i calibrated by myself, i was amazed and very much happy. WOAAAAHHH! that was my expression. For the price of this TV, i would say very worth it but still pricey. :)

First 3D experience
5 Star Review By jkmw on Sony - Official Store - Dec 27, 2011

This set is the most realistic TV I have ever watched. The black and white levels are unheard of in a set this 'inexpensive'. Still pricey, no doubt about it, but until now you had to pay twice, even three times the price to get this kind of realism, #compared with this sets' latest sale price#. 3D REALLY works and is very enjoyable....It still takes a bit of getting used to, #it's not a prefect process yet#, but it is vastly superior to "old fashioned" 3D during which you had to wear red and blue colored lenses. The newer 3D process still has problems with things like words and detailed images and I found my eyes and brain trying to make sense out of parts of a screeen image that just aren't right yet. This can cause eye strain and headaches. When I stopped trying to resolve these areas and enjoyed the overall effect, I found the new process to be very effective. Regarding the off-axis bloom, I find virtually none of this within our measured 7' wide seating area about 9' back from the screen, this equates to a viewing angle of about 20 degrees on either side of perpendicular. If there is one weakness, it's the sound. Very narrow frequency response and NO bass. I use a sound bar to bring viewing and listening pleasure up to equal levels. The image on this set is inspiring and in my estimation is worth the current sale price.

my top product of the line
5 Star Review By sino on Sony - Official Store - Dec 26, 2011

I have long been a supporter and user of Sony AV (& TV) Products. I have this TV hooked up to a Sony STR_DA3500ES. It knows when the TV and stereo are both on (connecting via HDMI) and detects remote audio connection disabling the internal speakers. I had a calibration issue with the set and, luckily, was able to resolve it myself, updating the software in the set and its input selection. However, the support people are another matter. I downgrade the overall ratings due to their stupidity (online assistance/chat) and lack of phone support (waited on the phone for 30 minutes before giving in to online chatting). Too bad.

Superb Picture, But.....
2 Star Review By jantravlz on Sony - Official Store - Dec 16, 2011

We had enjoyed our Sony 40" LCD for 6 years and needed to upgrade. Looked at the televison in dark stores prior to purchase, but did not realize that the gorilla glass reflects all light sources in the room. My husband has glaucoma and requires abundant light in all rooms at night. Thus the reflections ruin the beautiful picture, at night and during days, with lots of windows in our home. Also, the PIP and twin pictures are not available without an external source, such as an antenna. This is not truth in advertising to say that these features are part of the set, when they require a totally different accessory. Also, we are not young techies. A paper manual should be provided for all purchases. It took time to figure out the imanual and the other complex remote features. For such an expensive televison, we are disappointed.

Blown Away
5 Star Review By leeoh on Sony - Official Store - Dec 16, 2011

From a 'monitor' stand point this thing is awesome. The picture quality, out of the box, is dead on accurate. From a TV stand point #receiving over-the-air terrestrial signals# this product come up way short. TV channel favorites is buried deep in the menu structure, no quick access from the remote. The system requires boot time, so don't wait till the last minute to watch your favorite show. Plan on two to three minutes for the system to stabilize and give you control. From a streaming stand point this product comes up short again. The lack of onboard memory leaves the streaming-video quality at the mercy of your internet connection. Pauses and pixilation is the norm with U-Verse maximum speed. Streaming through my PS3 to this as a monitor is awesome. # It has memory which will buffer streaming delays. #

5 Star Review By DaveInNY5 on Sony - Official Store - Dec 13, 2011

This is a great TV. The picture is gorgeous and rivals even the best plasmas. You get true blacks in this set. I love the frame-less Gorilla glass. I did have a little trouble setting up the HDMI Control because my 1+ year old Sony amp did not have ARC (a new Sony feature), but with the help of Tech Support I got it working without ARC. I also had some problems setting up the internet even though my Sony Blu-Ray works well, but I've tweaked my router settings and now its working well. I like that I can pivot the screen 20 degrees in either direction, but the TV wobbles a bit on the stand. I don't think its going to fall, but it should be more stable. Oh, I forgot to mention the 3D. Its AMAZING! I can't wait to get more 3D programming. You can even simulate 3D on a non-3D show or movie and although its not as incredible as the full 3D, it is pretty great. Plus it has Picture and Picture so you can watch 2 things at once. So my wife can watch a movie on half the screen and I can watch football on the other half. It doesn't get better than that!

Best TV Yet
5 Star Review By Talon38 on Sony - Official Store - Dec 10, 2011

love my new sony tv.
5 Star Review By JDAD on Sony - Official Store - Dec 7, 2011

In the past 6 months i have been trying to find a tv to replace my sony 60 inch projection, which to be honest, was way ahead of its time. I have purchased the samsung 8000 series and sharp 835u and returned both as the picure wasnt that much better than my sxrd i was replacing. So i started researching and found this beauty, and i have to say i am highly impressed with this set. Yes it can be pricey but compared to the other brands, you are getting MORE than you pay for. Take it from someone who has trouble spending big money on a product only to be dissapointed after setting it up. This tv will not dissapoint, the color, clarity, and motion on this tv is far and away the best on any set out there. Go for it, you won't regret it!

Never another brand
5 Star Review By TheGoldMan on Sony - Official Store - Dec 1, 2011

Ease of set up was super easy, picture quality is fantastic, remotes and online are great except using streaming during peak hours which includes weekends and nights. I would really only dock half a star as I had to set up my laptop to stream and then hook HDMI to tv since I cant use sony online function, and I am not the only one. It is on ALL sony tv's that you have to register through sony/netflix. My netflix and amazon work fine as long as I run them outside of tv then hdmi to the computer, but try to do it through tv and just get errors. It is most likely a sony server problem since you have to register your tv through sony/netflix in order to receive the signal. Other than this annoying item it is a great tv. I am sure there is a workaround if you call, but I have an extra hdmi and laptop laying around so just port to work around it myself. Also, a 2 hour HD movie through my cable provider uses at least 6GB and maybe 7.... So be careful if you have caps and your speed runs fast.

Fantastic XBR
5 Star Review By Summer1 on Sony - Official Store - Oct 10, 2011

The 55 inch XBR H929 is one of the best televisions I have ever owned. Set-up out of the box was simple and after the electrician finished a custom wall mount install with Bose speakers this tv just blows all the others I have seen recently out of the water. The monolithic panel also looks great when the tv is off. Works incredibly well with Blu Ray and 3D movies. I rarely write reviews so but this tv is worth every penny!

Not Reliable
2 Star Review By Montecristo on Sony - Official Store - Sep 17, 2011

The TV offers a nice picture. Great for movies and gaming. The 3d experience, amazing. The sound its decent despite the hidden big speakers on the back. My biggest problem. Not reliable. Two days ago it asked me to do an update and after it said it was completed it turns off within ten seconds after been on.Seems like I might not be the only one since I read others reviews online and they seemed to have the same problem. Don't do the update or it will kill your tv with some sort of computer virus. This is unacceptable for Sony's top of the line and I was told by the tech that it will take weeks before he could get the part that supposedly is now mess up . I now you guys can do better so please don't disappoint your loyal customers.

If your looking for the best, look no further.
5 Star Review By OptikNerv on Sony - Official Store - Sep 5, 2011

The picture quality of this tv is amazing, deep inky plasma blacks courtesy of a full-array local dimming backlight. The monolithic design is very sleek and clean (looks like a featureless black slab when off). The Wi-Fi can be picky to set itself up automatically but is easily fixed by manually typing in an IP address. My only complaint is the lack of VUDU from the streaming services.

1 Star Review By jase298hk on Sony - Official Store - Jun 19, 2011

I purchace tv, and new ht-ct550w sound bar connected with arc hdmi cables. Looks great, sounds great (little more tuning to do), arc works great. Used WOW blu ray to setup tv. Only problem I had was my IP address. Fast call to sony, and manualy setup IP got the wedgets working. This setup replaced 2yr old samsung. This xbr blows old tv out of the water.

Price
5 Star Review By DX4000 on Sony - Official Store - Jun 17, 2011

I Feel its Good but i don't entirely agree with most of these folks because the price reaches four thousand dollars and i don't understand why the price in the 46 inch decreases by two percent and the 55 inch docent fall at all and i hear that their making 65 inch and the price for that should be the balance of the current price of the fifty five inch i guess these folks bought far expensive.i can afford it but all it needs its a 8.1 Surround sound a blow the whole competition apart as the best of the best !!

Best LED tv in 2011
5 Star Review By vxp100 on Sony - Official Store - Jun 13, 2011

the less expensive smart versions have a mini keyboard remote. The remote for this unit is cumberson when you try to access the "smart" section of this tv. I have not yet tried to view 3D but I .would expect this unit to perform just as well in 3D as 2D. An optional remote for this unit would make it 5 stars instead of 4.

Awesome TV
5 Star Review By Fordlightning on Sony - Official Store - May 22, 2011

Although a 3D TV, the picture and color on 2D are exquisite. In watching 3D shows, the 3D is better than in the theatre. I bought this to replace a 3 year old 52" XBR so the marked improvement was a surprise (we wanted the 3D component). I would recommend to anyone.

HX929
5 Star Review By racefan44 on Sony - Official Store - May 9, 2011

It had been 4 years since I had bought a high end TV so I was expecting a leap in performance. I was not however, expecting as big a leap that I've seen with my 55HX929. It is an absolutely beautiful TV. Now, I'm just waiting to have the tv on for about 100 hours and I am going to have it professionally calibrated by a local expert. I was pleasantly surprised with how good 3D looks, the theater doesn't come close . While I agree with another review that the stand is a bit wobbly, I can't really complain about anything.
