Do Not Buy a Philips LCD/Plasma HDTV
1 Star Review   By member Appleseed34 - Jan 1, 2010

Strengths: Good picture for 2 years before tv goes out on you.

Weakness: Tv only lasts about 2 to 3 years before it will go out on you. According to other sites and my own experience this is a tv not worth buying.

Poorly built and is a rip off of your hard earned money. Whatever you do, please don't look at what I wrote and just say I'm not happy. Research the Philips brand you are about to purchase. I have heard more bad things then good. Had this 42" paid off for only a year and now it doesn't work and Philips will not help you any. Tv is just designed to make it past the warranty and if you do have the extended warranty do not think you will not have a problem getting problem solved.

Bad product
1 Star Review   By member bb4851 - Dec 18, 2009

Strengths: great picture, good price, easy setup

Weakness: poor quality, still waiting on repair

After 1 week, HDMI 1 went out. Moved the cable to HDMI 3, worked fine. I can't help but wonder what's waiting down the road as far as failures go.... Called Philips customer service, they basically confirmed what I already knew - TV would have to be repaired. I qualified for in-home repair service, but the selection of repair centers didn't impress me. After checking the BBB, found 1 of the 3 they gave me had a A- rating, still haven't gotten a response from them. At this point, I'm glad I paid the Xtra $$ for the store-bought warranty. Now I'm just waiting for the after-Christmas sales, maybe get a better brand.

1 Star Review   By member unhappy29 - Oct 30, 2007

Strengths: looks good, but never buy a tv by its look!!!!

Weakness: everything

My husband and I went out to best buy on August 17, 2007 and purchased a Phillips 42 inch LCD 1080p came to about $3000 including home theater system, surge protector and 4 years warranty. After 2 weeks the TV did not start, we went back to best buy with the TV, at that point, they replaced it with a new TV same brand. After 5 weeks, the new TV did not start again and we called best buy, at that point it was over the 1 month (september 20) so a repairman came to pick it up. WHen we called to inquire about our TV, we were told the they were waiting for the computer board, it took them 3 weeks to get the part and when they installed it, it still did not work so now they are waiting for the electrical board. It is October 31, 2007, we still do not have our TV. We have been very patient up to this point, I called Phillips today and they basically told me to shut up and wait for them to fix it and they do not guarantee the time it will take, that was coming from customer service. Right now my plan is to get refund for this piece of crap and buy a sony or a samsung.

Very Nice LCD for the price.
4 Star Review   By member moffmalthus - Oct 20, 2007

Strengths: Very crisp clear picture in hi def stations. Non-Hi Def stations look better than any LCD I have seen. Built in QAM Tuner for free Hi def.

Weakness: In really dark settings for movies etc... images look kind of inky. Sound from built in speakers is average at best.

I have had this LCD for over 6 months now. We use it as our main viewing set. I have been very pleased so far with it's performance. We also have a Sharp 37" Aquos and the Hi Def actually looks better on the philips especially watching sports. There is very little artifacting with the philips wile there has always been quite a lot on the sharp. Maybe it's because the sharp is a full year older. The SD channels look amazing on the set, better than most CRT sets even. First time I've seen that with an LCD. The Philips also has a built in QAM Tuner which is great for getting free Hi Def for just subscribing to basic cable. We get about 14 Hi Def stations that way not to mention over 100 digital stations that look almost as good as the hi def stations. The only negatives I've seen are the speakers which arent the greatest and in really dark images on the screen it can be kind of hard to make out what is going on. I've actually only noticed it a few times with certain movies like Batman returns and V for vendetta. I'm not sure if it's just a poor dvd or the screen unable to display it well because with movies like Star Wars and Star Trek with a lot of dark space scenes this is not a problem. Some people have said the stand looks cheap, I don't see that at all, I think it looks great. I also found the remote to be just fine. Anyway, if you can find this set still for a good price It's well worth considering.

Nice TV
4 Star Review   By member mozillafirefix - Jun 8, 2007

Strengths: Nice black background; Good picture enhancement over weak signals; Has digital audio out.

Weakness: Sound is a bit blur with built-in speakers; Bulky front panel; Speakers are not detachable (for a slimmer look); Limited connectivity with only one HDMI digital in.

This is my 2nd Philips LCD TV purchase and as last one I am more than happy with this purchase. The picture clarify is amazing when the Picture Plus and Dynamic Control functions are turned on. It performed better than my last Philips 30" LCD TV on local cable channels (which for some reason usually have relatively weaker signals) as the dynamic control function significantly filtered out white noises. I am connecting a DVD player and a HTPC to it via the component and HDMI ports respectively. Too bad it does not have multiple HDMI ports for both my DVD player and HTPC. As to the sound quality, I feel the built-in speakers are a bit blur on low frequencies, especially when I watch live shows like American Idol -- its speakers really fail to deliver a "live" feeling. Anyway I may have been spoiled with my Onkyo receivers and speakers -- when I connect the TV's digital audio out to my receiver and mute the TV's speakers there are A LOT differences. The other minor dis-satisfaction is that it's front panel is relatively broad, adding about extra 7 inches diagonal size to each corner and making the TV look HUGE. I would be more fond of a slimmer body.

Phillips 42
1 Star Review   By member craigg1 - Jan 18, 2007

Strengths: Nice design, pleasing to the eye.

Weakness: Picture quality was not as good as some of the competition. Poor build quality. Very poor support.

Even though I have read some horror stories about this company's lack of support I decided to take a chance and buy one from Costco. I managed to assemble it, plug it in, and immediately began watching some OTA HD programming. All was great for about 30 minutes and then the screen went blank. I called Phillip's support which answered within about 10 minutes. They asked me a few questions and then referred me to a local service company for in house support. I tried to contact the local company at least 10 times with no luck. They never answered their phone and only returned one call. After 14 days I gave up on them and returned the LCD to Costco. I have other Phillips products that I'm happy with but based on my own personal experience as well as the experiences of others I would avoid them when it comes to a TV purchase.

42PF7421D 42" LCD TV (16:9, 1366x768, 1650:1, HDTV).
4 Star Review   By member dch4454282 - Jan 11, 2007

Strengths: Absolutely BEAUTIFUL TV

Weakness: Haven't found any yet

After reading lots of online reviews and comparisons and finally narrowing it down to prices and quality of picture and looks, we went with this model purchased from Sam's. So far we are very happy with our choice and when speaking with others who have owned Phillips products they all agree with good quality. As with any new TV you must make adjustments to the settings to find what preferences you like, but after the fine tuning and tweaks..beautiful picture!

Philips 42 inch LCD HDTV
4 Star Review   By member wish_sonu - Dec 22, 2006

Strengths: Great black looks, good sound, awesome clarity, good color saturation, inbuilt USB port

Weakness: No PIP, Cheap remote and TV stand, No shortcuts to many menus and features on remote

I recently bought Philips 42 inch from Costco on BF deal and returned my vizio GL42 that gave few problems. This TV when I compared gave stunning clarity on SD (Not tested HD). When I setup my TV initially I saw lots of pixel saturation and decided I will return the TV but then observed that it actually dependent on the signal. After switching on the Pixel plus feature and performing lots of tweaks I saw a dramatic difference on screen. I was so happy to see the results. Vizio looked crap in front of Philips in terms of clarity. But vizio had lots of other features that this TV lacked. This TV looks stunningly beautiful in my living room and so far I am very happy with my purchase.

So far, so good
5 Star Review   By member gurleli - Dec 10, 2006

Strengths: Design, picture

Weakness: the stand feels cheap

The picture on this LCD TV can be summed up with one word...Stunning! I investigated several LCD TVs before I bought this one; and I'm very happy with my decision. It's physically beautiful, fits perfectly in my living room, and has a fantastic picture. In my opinion, the picture quality is as good as sets that cost twice as much. I'm thrilled with the brightness, color, and clarity of this LCD. And I'm glad every time I turn it on during the daytime that I didn't go with a plasma. I bought if from Costco which gives me complete peace of mind as I can always return it if something is wrong with it.

42 in Philips LCD HD TV
4 Star Review   By member vivawang - Nov 19, 2006

Strengths: Good dsign, clear pictures and good sound.

Weakness: Images been pixelated with fast movements.

Within this price range I think this one is a good buying of a HD TV. It is so easy to set up, just one click ( it has a automatic set up function ). I will recommend this one to all my family and friends. Only wish it could have a front panel digital connections instead of a back bottom panel where so hard to reach.

Excellent Experiences
5 Star Review

Strengths: Sharpness, Design

Weakness: Price

It cost me a lot money to buy this Philips LCD TV, and allthough it was more safe to buy the all known Sony Bravia, or Samsung TV's, I chose this one. It appeared the sharpnes was much better than my previous LCD TV (Samsung) and the interface looked more well designed and more smooth. Also the sound is much better, there is much more surround sound to get out of this TV, than the Samsung.

Defective HDMI & Bad Philips Customer Service
1 Star Review   By member DC1997 - Jul 28, 2006

Strengths: Easy to installation, good sound quality

Weakness: Defective HDMI, Blurring for fast moving images.

I had nothing but trouble with this TV from the beginning. It started off that the HDMI connection would not work, which after an extended period of time Phillips sent out a repair man. At that point the TV would have to go into the shop and have one of its computer boards replaced (he explained it, but I don’t remember the exact part) and would be gone for around to a week. (waiting for the part) This is were the poor customer service comes in. I talked with a customer service representative at Philips and when asked about my options including could I have a replacement for my TV since it was only a couple weeks old at that point they refused (and I tried to plead my case in-depth) In fact they informed me I was stuck with the TV. Thank goodness I purchased it from CostCo. After taking with them they let me return the piece of %*$# for a full refund. What I learned is simple Philips – Bad, CostCo – Good.
