4 Star Review   By Hackettman on Buydig.com - Mar 31, 2008

Strengths: Sheer size, PIP, Split screen, lots of inputs......

Weakness: Tricky menu movement and slow setup..

I bought this from buy dig for $700 and free shipping. Great deal since it comes brand new. I have to say I was impressed when I bought the tv friday night and it was at my door wednesday morning. Shipping was supposed to be 7-9 days and it ended up to be about 3. The remote feels cheap but only because its a remote and not something specific bought to control more than one device. Its an awesome tv that accepts a 1080p input and Ive heard the firmware upgrades are simple.

Syntax Olevia model 237T 37" LCD HDTV
4 Star Review   By member mastervu - Feb 29, 2008

Strengths: Bright even next to picture window, no glare, fast channel search.

Weakness: Startup too long, no direct access to different sources.

Overall this is a very good TV. Have it for 3 months now without any problems. It does take about 10 seconds for the TV to come on and initially you might think that nothing is happening because there is no positive feedback. My other problem is with the access to the sources. It has lots of different sources but no direct button access. For example if you normally go between TV source and component source you must cycle through all the sources to go from one to another. My 32" TV by another manufacturer has 4 different source buttons so you only cycle through the same type of source only. On the plus side, on initial channel setup it searched for channels very quickly. I have this in my living room which is very sunny and the picture is still very clear without glare. Best of all, no dead pixels.

Best in class TV for the price, hands-down!
4 Star Review   By member mepricer - Feb 19, 2008

Strengths: Built-in digital tuner, very affordable, excellent picture, plenty of inputs

Weakness: Startup time a bit long, remote is basic, menus are lacking

This is a very affordable entry level LCD TV with better than average performance. I am upgrading from a 32" CRT TV, and went with an Olevia based on a friend's advice, and couldn't be happier with this TV. After testing out each of the different types of inputs, I found that some of the input's image quality were not very optimized out of the box. With adjustments using the Avia calibration DVD that I already owned, I was able to "perfect" the pictures to fantastic quality for each. Watching the computer animated movies is spectacular, with almost 3-D effects due to the clarity. Another obvious benefit is the ability to pickup HD network TV over the air. The number one property of a TV for me is the picture quality, since all else is not critical. The peripherals of the TV are not spectacular, but that is not the main reason I purchased this TV. The remote is very basic, and the menus are cumbersome, but neither of these are really issues for me. As others have mentioned, the start-up is a little longer than I am used to, but again this is not really important to me. By far, this TV was worth every penny, and I would highly recommend this TV for someone on a tighter budget or for someone looking for a nice picture and good quality set but not wanting to spend much to get much more.

4 Star Review   By miler456 on Bright and Sleek - Feb 10, 2008

Strengths: beautifull picture

Weakness: not very sleek looking

i was wondering if anyone else found that their tv does have a 1080p setting on it. i first noticed this on my brother's tv.(we baught the same one) He got an upconvert dvd player and it automatically popped up at 1080p...than we tried the xbox360 on 1080p setting and it also worked..i just recently purchased a bluray player and again it shows on the screen 1080p, so i'm a little confused how it works?

Awesome TV!
4 Star Review   By member zdemeter - Feb 8, 2008

Strengths: Great picture quality; two HDMI inputs (on certain models); LG Panel (on certain models); great value for the price

Weakness: Slow to turn on; black levels could be deeper; remote is cheap looking; hassle to switch between inputs

Having owned this TV since Black Friday, I can say without a doubt that it is one of the nicest looking "cheap" sets out there. It's got great picture quality and HD content looks absolutely amazing on it. The amount of inputs available for use is simply awesome. The casing is a bit on the chunky side, but aside from that it is aesthetically pleasing. The only drawbacks I find for the set is its slow turn on time (you will wonder if it's plugged in or if the remote even triggered IR on the TV), but after awhile you get used to it. Even though its black levels could be lighter, they are much better than other cheaper sets I've seen--likely to the fact that my TV has an LG panel in it. Overall it's an awesome TV. If you have the money to purchase it, I highly recommend it. It's got a great picture and while the firmware and remote could be of higher quality, that's what you get for buying cheaper. Hopefully with future firmware updates the digital coax/optical audio outs will work correctly (right now they only send out PCM audio, while it should be pushing out Dolby 5.1).

Great HDTV for the price
5 Star Review   By member ugg17 - Jan 20, 2008

Strengths: Unbelievable price, many connections, wonderful picture quality

Weakness: Lone time to switch channels

Bought it for only $500 on black friday sale from target online with free shipping. It looks smaller and lighter than my another syntax 37" LCD HDTV bought 3 years ago for $799+tax. It also has more connections which I love the most, I can connect a lot of things including computer to it. The picture quality is about the same though.

Awesome TV
5 Star Review   By member reuv - Jan 20, 2008

Strengths: QAM tuner, loads of inputs (VGA, HDMI, composite, component & others).

Weakness: only 720p (accepts 1080i)

So I finally decided to jump into the HDTV bandwagon. The price was right: $540 (with tax) for a 37" wide-screen HDTV definitely made it a great buy. In fact, I bought two (another for my brother). The picture quality is absolutely stunning, and I sit about 6-8 feet away. As a plus it doubles as a computer monitor, and runs at resolution of 1360x768. I bought a long VGA cable, RCA cable, and 3.5mm stereo to RCA converter, and I now have a large screen for watching movies & games. The bottom line: unless you are one of those types that absolutely MUST have a 1080p HDTV, I highly recommend this TV. Higher price doesn't necessarily mean a similar increase in quality. I would definitely purchase again.

Excellent value for a 37 inch LCD TV
5 Star Review   By member jgreenst - Jan 3, 2008

Strengths: competitive price, nice picture quality, built-in QAM tuner, upgradeable firmware, on-site warranty

Weakness: thicker than some other models, menus are a bit confusing, manual comes only on CD (I prefer a hard copy)

I got this on Black Friday simply because the price was too good to pass up at about $500. It replaced an Olevia LT27HVX (27 inch HD ready) for which I paid about the same amount only 18 months ago. I had the previous TV wall mounted, and was able to mount the 237T using the same mount fairly easily. The picture is bright and crisp (though black levels are a bit brighter than other more expensive models). The sound is adequate (much improved over the LT27HVX), and the QAM tuner allows for viewing a number of channels (major networks mostly) in HD while connected directly to a coaxial cable without a cable box (tuner). The blue indicator LED can be turned off via the menu system. This may not seem significant, but this was not possible on my previous TV, where I had to cover the annoyingly bright LED with electrical tape. Also there is 10-12 seconds of boot-up time, not a big deal, you get used to that fairly quickly. Overall I am very happy, it is the best value currently out there for a 37 inch LCD.

Excellent value for a 37 inch LCD TV
5 Star Review   By member jgreenst - Jan 3, 2008

Weakness: thicker than some other models, menus are a bit confusing, manual comes only on CD (I prefer a hard copy)

I got this on Black Friday simply because the price was too good to pass up at about $500. It replaced an Olevia LT27HVX (27 inch HD ready) for which I paid about the same amount only 18 months ago. Nice TV
4 Star Review   By member chas28645 - Dec 17, 2007

Strengths: excellent HD picture, no overscan, good value

Weakness: menu system, limited setup adjustments, ATSC tuner performance, PIP access

I've had my 237T for about six months and I'm quite satisfied with its overall performance. With some tweaking, the picture quality with HD sources is outstanding. I especially like the set's ability to display images with no overscan. The color temperature selection is limited to two choices, but I find that the "Native" setting looks fine to me. The backlight adjustment is limited to three selections. I would like to have an additional "darker" setting or two, as I find the "Dark Room" setting is not quite dark enough at times. I'm disappointed with the 237T's ATSC tuner performance. I live in an area with considerable multipath interference and the tuner just can't lock on some signals. I have a four-year-old LG set top box that provides much more reliable reception than the 237T tuner. The 237T does have picture-in-picture, but it's only accessible via the menu. I don't particularly like the thumbwheel menu system, which I find to be rather confusing, especially when I haven't used it for a while. Overall, I would recommend the 237T because of its picture quality and "bang for the buck" value, especially when it's on sale.

best value for your money for a 37" LCD
5 Star Review   By member chocoboat - Dec 15, 2007

Strengths: low price, QAM tuner, lots of connectors

Weakness: poor on screen menus, wall mounting isn't really an option, somewhat weak at displaying dark scenes

This TV is a great value for your money, and I definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a big LCD for a reasonable price. All-around it works great, HD content looks amazing. I even hooked it up to use a PC monitor for a little while, that was fun to try out. DVDs and games look great on it. There is really no reason to pay nearly twice as much for a famous name brand TV of the same size. A great bonus is the QAM tuner, which can pick up HD channels over regular cable. I have regular cable with no extras, and this picked up CBS/ABC/NBC/FOX in HD, as well as a few other extra HD channels. The negatives: 1) On screen menus aren't well designed... but you'll rarely, if ever, need to use them 2) Not easy to wall mount... but this is not a big deal since most people don't do that anyway 3) Dark scenes aren't quite as dark as they should be, making them slightly difficult to see. IMO this is the only real advantage the name brand TVs have. But do you want to pay twice as much for slightly improved dark scenes? I doubt it. Overall I'm very happy with my purchase and this TV is well worth the money. It's 99% as good as the competition, at around 60% of the price.

Olevia 237T HDTV LCD
4 Star Review   By member bsl918 - Dec 8, 2007

Strengths: Great quality for the price. OTA HD channels looks awesome.

Weakness: Long boot time. Usually takes about 15-20 seconds to turn on. SD cable definitely could be better through some tweaking of the settings.

People have complained about the blue led light that stays on while the TV is off. This can easily be disabled through the settings menu. Overall, this is a great entry level HDTV LCD.

Incredible TV. Best Bang for your buck this year.
5 Star Review   By member dgp41482 - Nov 30, 2007

Strengths: Nice Contrast and color. Dark gray bezel. LED power light goes off when watching TV. 2 HDMI's! Very noticable upgrade from 32". Fast menu switching. Impressive amount of input choices. Just Love it!

Weakness: Rather thick for an LCD. SD content distorts on the right side vertical distortion. Screws on bezel too tight, I have a white blotch in the lower left corner.

I am replacing my 32" Element TV from last year and wow what an upgrade! Movies seem more movie like with larger screen. Colors are improved and contrast is much better. The menu switch is much faster. More inputs is great. I love this TV and for the same price as last years 32". Minor negatives both are fixed with a little tweaking. Like loosening the screws on the bezel to keep it from pinching. Also moving the display image off the screen so the vertical distortion is off the screen. Overall best buy of the year!

Olevia 237T LCD TV
4 Star Review   By member andgee - Nov 30, 2007

Strengths: Great picture, price

Weakness: on screen menus are confusing, hard to understand.

I have owned a 32" Olevia LCD TV for about a years, very good picture quality for the price range. I bought this TV at target.com before BF on sale for $549.00 with coupon code for 10% off so my total bill tax included was $534.00 + Free shipping. You can't beat that! It is very good so far, would purchase again with this price range. Edit: The build-in HD tuner can unscrambled some comcast digital channel, like channel 262 24hrs if subscribe basic cable at Bayarea.

Excellent TV!
5 Star Review   By member kshitiz - Nov 29, 2007

Strengths: - Amazing display - Reasonably priced - Plays both NTSC and PAL format

Weakness: - Thickness - No PIP on remote

We got this TV on Black Friday for just over $500 which is a good deal for a 37" LCD. I already have a 32" Element (rebadged Polaroid) but the 37" upgrade - Olevia is definitely better. I had to do bare minimum adjustments to the picture, the default settings are already pretty good. One important criteria for me was that the TV should work on both NTSC and PAL format (if I ever want to take this to India). I tested this by playing PAl format video on this and it works great. The only two issues are no PIP option on the remote and the thickness of the panel (its about 4-5 inches deep). But overall, it is an excellent buy and highly recommended.

Very nice, especially for the price!!

Strengths: Great HDTV Picture quality, Incredible value, multitude of inputs, looks, on-site warranty.

Weakness: Mediocre SD Picture quality (but not worse than other similar brands), hard to remove base, limited VESA mount options, setup menu options that don't work, remote is a bit blah.

Picked this up on the pre-Black Friday Target.com deal. Was a great deal with free shipping. I have been messing with it for the past couple days, and here is my initial impression: The HDTV picture quality is very good, even when compared to more expensive brands. I am getting HD signal via QAM over cable. I watched a movie on Universal HD, and the quality was simply stunning. SD quality leaves a bit to be desired. If you have a good signal, it looks much better, but still not as good as a standard TV. If you play with options like noise reduction, contrast, sharpness, etc. it can look much better than the factory defaults. Too bad you can't have separate settings for each signal type (or each channel). There are some setup menu options that have been disabled, but are available on other models. I hope they get enabled in a future firmware upgrade. Mine has 1 bad pixel (that I have found so far). Also, the stand is exceedingly difficult to remove if you want to wall mount it. The mounting options are also very limited. The holes are too close together for me to use the nice mounting bracket that came with my floor-standing swivel mount (Wal-Mart black Friday $100 deal!) I had to attach it directly to the base mount, which works, but limits the height adjustment. Overall, I am very pleased, especially for the price.

Budget LCD...I think NOT!
5 Star Review   By member S4F4M - Nov 21, 2007

Strengths: picture, price, picture, picture, picture

Weakness: picture adjustments, zoom (set levels), tuner, remote, asthetics, weight?, Customer Service?

Okay, this is not the "best" looking LCD out there aesthetically. However, if you are looking for a REALLLY good picture at a REALLLY good price, look no further. Probably, the best BANG for your BUCK. Specs: 720p 36.7"x27.4"x5.6" (w/o stand) ~50 lbs (w/o stand) built in ASTC/NTSC/QAM tuner 2 HDMI ports Composite Component S-video VGA Picture-in-Picture 1600:1 contrast (awesome for the price) 8 ms refresh (awesome for the price) Speakers on the bottom that crank out some volume without distorting While not the best remote, what you get will do. I have read that you can use universal remote (learning?) with this TV (Harmony?). Since this is the "2" series, the picture adjustments are limited. I have read that the IDEA adjustments DO WORK, but I have not noticed much of a difference in the picture. According to Syntax, IDEA is there on the menu, but reserved for the "5" series. Also, according to the company, the only difference between the "2" and "5" series is the menu controls - "5" series has more because it is meant for gaming. Who really knows, but looking at their specs side-by-side, it's hard to see much difference elsewhere. If you want to see sweat drip down the face of the opposing team, the 237T delivers!!
