Nokia N800 Internet Tablet
3.5 Star Review  laptopmag.com - Apr 3, 2007

There's something refreshing about a portable device that doesn't try to be everything-and instead focuses on a couple of key features. Such is the case with Nokia's second-generation N800 Internet Tablet. It was designed to provide a near-desktop-quality Web browsing experience through a Wi-Fi connection that's easy to set up. It also lets you stay in touch through Voice-over-IP calling with Google Talk, e-mail, instant messaging, and even video calls. Although some users might find its features too pared down and its price a little high, it's still a handy device for surfing the Web.

Surpasses my expectations
5 Star Review   By member flyrlfs - Jun 18, 2008

Strengths: Great screen contrast. Very versatile. Strong Bluetooth and Wifi transceivers for greater net availability

Weakness: Screen is small and font can be a challenge for the 'mature' crowd. :-) The software is still a little buggy and does need some 'linux' knowledge to fully unlock the capabilities of the unit.

This is an awesome tool. I wanted a lost cost, portable PC. This fits the bill. I strongly recommend the OS2008 update. The performance boost, bug fixes and added features are well worth the 'free' upgrade. OS2008 comes with a *lot* of software add-ons. There seems to be enough internal memory to accommodate all of the features I'm interested in, including grocery list management. :-)

Excellent portable device for Web, MP3 player and VoIP calls
5 Star Review   By member pricegruba - Jan 27, 2008

Strengths: Excellent quality, near perfect form factor, useful applications, sharp screen for photos and videos

Weakness: Limited number of useful applications; screen brightness not uniform

This Nokia N800 is an excellent laptop replacement for Web browsing. The browser displays full-featured Web pages with photos, not those simple mobile Web pages. It is also a very good MP3 and video player. I also use it to make Skype calls and view PDF files on the go. The built-in camera has about the same quality as those in laptops. The tablet can save the wireless network setting and automatically connects when there is one available. So far, I had difficulty in connecting some secured wireless networks, because the connection control software lacks some important parameters. Overall the Web browsing is fast. I wish there is reliable application that supports Windows Office document viewing. That will be perfect. There are two slots for SD cards. The SD card expandability wins over iPod, although N800 is bigger. Nothing to complain except for the connection issues with some network.

Nokia N800 Internet Tablet
4 Star Review   By member jackass124 - Aug 12, 2007

Strengths: Skype, Convenience of use for travellers, huge development going on right now for apps

Weakness: unproven apps which can cause crashes and freezes

So far, I am VERY happy with my n800...have owned it for a couple weeks, and Skype works great!...perfect for travelling...avoid carrying a laptop...it's a pocketable device!...great for doing email...no word processing so far...built in camera hasn't been used yet...it's very cool, but Skype does NOT support it yet...bluetooth headset for skype is NOT supported (hopefully soon!)..the developer community is working hard to develop new apps all the time, which is great!...the unit is great for a gadget nut like me, or a linux nerd..but, not suitable really for a non-computer person...probably the next versions down the road will be!

Impressive device by Nokia! Good job!
4 Star Review   By member spring83 - Jul 16, 2007

Strengths: 1. make VOIP phone call through Skype in N800 2. Access to the internet anytime where WiFi is found and check emails too. 3. Listening to music or watch videos on big screen at anytime and anywhere

Weakness: 1. Don't have MSN client 2. Opera in N800 doesn't support Asian languages by default 3. system can't display eastern asian languages either 4. not well support for MS office documents

Finally a improved version of N770 has been released - N800. This is a great device which allows you to surf internet and check email anywhere within wifi spot. Also, if you have a skype account, it allows you to make VOIP for free in US and Canada (you need to purchase a plan from Skype for $30 a year). This device is developed under open source Linux system which allows people to develop many useful tools or programs for N800. Many of the weaknesses fin in N800 such as support for Asian language can be solved by installed a third party plug-in. Sound quality from Skype in N800 is very clear, I am very satisfied. With latest firmware updated, this device can support total 16GB (2 x 8GB) SD memory. Compare to $499 (4GB) from iPhone, I really think the N800 is a good value and better than I expected.

For $400 You can't beat it.
5 Star Review   By member hjon71 - May 26, 2007

Strengths: Gorgeous display, fast browser, easy to add memory so you can carry all the songs and videos you want.

Weakness: The user's guide is pretty much useless, but there are a couple website that are huge help.

Overall, It is nearly perfect. Lots of useful features, and more are being put out constantly. Thanks Maemo. I recommend the N800 for anyone looking for a small, portable, full function web browser. And it can sniff out a wi-fi connections where other devices can't.

Disappointing item - I would not buy another one
2 Star Review   By Steve Hammill on OnSale.com - May 21, 2007

Strengths: Very nice screen for its size; easy to carry; great battery life when the con mentioned below is not an issue.

Weakness: Screen discoloring; automatically turns on & kills battery; contact import utility not working; not compatible /w Google doc/spreadsheets; no approved CJK support; few useful apps

This unit gets lots of glowing write-ups from Thoughtfix and a few others. For those who must have a browser while they are on the can or cooking in the kitchen, I guess it has some value. However: * without a way to run Google docs, spreadsheet, and translation; * without hacking tools to open softly closed networks; * without functioning N800 utilities; * without accurate and detailed documentation; and *without a few useful apps... What good is the N800? I would not buy another one.

Impressive Internet Tablet
4 Star Review   By member merlin3212 - May 12, 2007

Strengths: Long battery life, crisp display, free open-source applications, relatively fast performance, Wifi and Bluetooth built-in, memory expandable to 4GB (potentially more), lightweight.

Weakness: Poorly designed carrying pouch included, VGA-only camera, can be easier to use (Linux OS).

I've read numerous reviews of the Nokia N800 and decided to finally take the plunge recently and purchased one for myself. The device is solidly built, has a metal casing front and back, and has a nice heft to it when you hold in your hands. The angular stylus is not very comfortable but nonetheless adequate. The Opera browser performs fairly quickly, and renders most web pages as faithfully as they would appear on a normal desktop browser. The only problem is that the resolution is so fine on the N800's LCD that you will find yourself zooming in and out frequently to actually read the text. The unit includes an FM stereo tuner, headphones, and can playback numerous audio/video formats using the media player or mplayer, which can be downloaded for free separately. All in all, its a handy and useful little device for web browsing and accessing a small but growing library of open-source applets in a non-Windows Mobile, non-Palm OS device.

Nokia N800
4 Star Review   By member jasonaztw - Apr 17, 2007

Strengths: Large high-res screen, thin, good speakers, replaceable battery

Weakness: Difficult to remove the external memory card and internal battery. No Skype

This Nokia N800 is a well-built device with good stereo speakers, nice screen (4.13"). However, it can be hard to remove the external memory card from its slot due to the lack of spring design. Also, right now there's no Skype support or MSN messanger.

Laptop replacement. Small 4 inch screen can be viewed by usb supported monitor.
5 Star Review   By member joeyman9 - Mar 31, 2007

Strengths: Snappy performance on par with Pentium M 1.7 mhz laptop. Video performance improved over CES show clip with new OS. Lite, easy to carry, Internet is right there.

Weakness: Wish it had x86 chip so I could use one of the 1000s of open source Linux software already out there. Need abiword or similar wp ported over to ARM chip.

If you go through airport security a lot, you'll appreciate this little guy – saves you from lugging your laptop out. Also has all the web functionality of a laptop without all the bulk. I bought this on a recent vacation where I wanted to leave my laptop at home. If I had had one of these before I left, I wouldn't have brought the laptop with me. Improved video performance with updated OS allows flash and other youtube type videos to play smoothly. AVI format (and others) are supported. In full screen mode it looks like an Archos PVR. Deviced was designed for the net, the browser is as fast as those running on my laptop. I have a Palm T/X (also an excellent pda) and thought the Nokia N800 would be redundant. Biggest difference between the two products, Palm T/X was designed as a PDA with wireless, N800 was designed as a wireless platform/computer, however much of the PDA type software apps are still being ported over (needs a fullfledged word processor – and it would be nice if my palm keyboard worked with this device also). Opera browser runs far smoother and quicker on N800 (and in multiple instances) than running on the Palm (Palm's Blazer Browser needs lots of updating). Operating system of N800 is far smoother than Palm's 5.x. More software does exist for Palm though. Can stream Internet audio and video and run movies. Complaints above about the browser/size of the web page can also be remedied! Set browser to Optimized View and then zoom between 180 and 300 percent (some complex web pages distort at 240 or 300 percent). Simple text pages (a news story) can be viewed properly up to 300 percent. Wish Nokia would allow rotating screen 90 degrees. Finally, nokia needs to produce a sturdy case for this and do something to enhance the grip (rubber on the back?) to prevent this bad boy from slipping out of my hands. Fantastic speed, sucks up the Internet like a full fledged computer, and open software. Can take 8 gigs (have heard of 16) of memory for movie storage. Next trip I'm taking this guy along and leaving the laptop at home.

This device performs as advertised, I love it!
5 Star Review   By member reedp22 - Mar 20, 2007

Strengths: High-resolution display, Web Browser (Opera 8) with Flash player (v7) which makes web browsing and emailing easy to view and use

Weakness: Battery power only lasts for about two hours with heavy use, specifications list three hours

I have been using the Nokia 770 at work for more then six months and we upgraded to the Nokia N800 Internet Table two weeks ago. I liked it so much I just bought one for my son. This is an upgraded version of the 770. The N800 has a smooth metallic front, with a black back and a swing down stand. A very compact thin design and weights just over 7 ounces which is a lighter than before. The overall appearance is excellent (cool). I use the N800 so that I could connection to Wi-Fi hotspots or my bluetooth phone to the internet instead of hauling around my notebook. This feature works as advertised and you can auto connect to saved Wi-Fi sites. It uses Opera 8 which I feel is better the IE to browse the Web. There are more features to this device than I covered here. In short, I love this device and it works.

Nokia N800 Internet
4 Star Review   By member cofoley - Feb 21, 2007

Strengths: It's thin and light. The screen is clear. Zooming in on web pages is easy because there are buttons for zooming in and out on top of the device. It boots in 5 seconds.

Weakness: The screen is small, so reading text can be hard. Opera, its Internet browser, displayed gmail so that I had to scroll to the right to sign in.

It gets you on the internet fast. The web page viewing experience is worse than on a big screen device, though. This device can use a phone as a modem to get EVDO connectivity.

5 Star Review   By gadgetguy on PageComputer - Jan 16, 2007

Strengths: Unbelievable experience! its like taking my pc on the road everyone should own one of these! Go NOKIA!

Weakness: Needs more internal memory! but just got a 2 gig sd card...

If you want a computer that is small that can really do what your pc does then pick this up wifi and bluetooth- totally cool!! and the girls love it! MOVIES AND MUSIC WORK UNBELIEVABLE ON THIS!
