This is a pricy "tween" device that is a palmtop residing in a miniature PC configuration.
Strengths are excellent mechanical design, a superb keyboard and perhaps it being the only device currently being marketed that has small size and many of the features of a laptop including a keyboard. PC Card and CompactFlash slots are a real plus.
Weaknesses are a display that has inadequate resolution. Characters are fuzzy and the display is difficult to see in sunlight even with maximum adjustments of brightness and contrast. More RAM is a must. The OS should be customer upgradeable.
It is incomprehensible that NEC chose to market a new, expensive device with an obsolete and buggy OS, MS's Windows HPC 2000. MS Mobile 2003 is now available from MS, but NEC may not make this available for the 900. Mixed messages have been obtained from NEC regarding whether or not the 900's OS is even vendor upgradeable. It is a must to have the OS software in eeproms or equivalent technology that permits customer OS upgrades.
ActiveSync, now in version 3.7, (3.1 is supplied with the 900) is still very buggy and unstable software.
The MobilePro 900 seems to be incompatible with innumerable software packages that supposedly run on HPC 2000. Incompatible GPS programs include: Delorme's XMap, Deluo's Routis, TeleType, and, guess what, MS's own Streets and Trips will not run on their OS. PDR also fails.
Recommendation: don't buy it unless NEC corrects the many problems.
