Philips PMC7230 Portable Media Center Review
4 Star Review  audioholics.com - May 7, 2007

We recently received a review unit from Philips and decided to put it though the paces. The PMC7230 has 30GB of hard drive storage that allows you to carry up to 130 hours of video or up to 15,000 songs. Let me start out by saying that if you are looking to for a device to use primarily for music, this is not your gadget, as there are better form factors out there for music. But if video is your thing, you might be in business. One feature that sets this unit apart is it's built-in video recording feature, which we will describe in full detail.

Don't Bother...
1 Star Review

Strengths: Intuitive interface to reach those rare non-playlisted items.

Weakness: Requires Media Center Will not copy over playlists Will not save portable playlists Only allows creation of one portable playlist Very few features for the price Does not copy over IDV3 tags

I am comparing this to my old ZEN 30GB which had significantly more features when it came to audio. I understand that this is a media player, but even IDV3 tags would not copy properly over to the machine (jpgs for album covers, lyrics, etc.). I set up the device to only sync with a certain directory and playlists out of Media Player, and it still copied everything in the library EXCEPT the playlists. The portable playlist could not be modified once set (i.e., added to) and have those changes retained. The boot process is exceptionally longer, less audio options, the shuffle doesn't work very well (user settings are lost), cannot have different configurations on the device (i.e., car settings, home settings) The holding case for it is not secure if you want to use the device. I got this machine because it was slicker and I wanted a better video display for my music (all my mp3's have graphics tags, etc.). Instead, that didn't work as planned. As the machine will only work with XP systems, it already has an expiration date. I certainly did not expect to sacrifice capabilities in upgrading. But it plays songs, so I guess if you don't know any better, you'd give it a good rating.

Awesome portable media player
5 Star Review   By member xiangisme - Dec 28, 2007

Strengths: Large screen, recording functionality and fine image quality

Weakness: Speaker is low, problem with images rotated by Windows picture and fax viewer

Overall this is a great product that has large LCD, good resolution and fine image quality. The most impressive part to me is its direct recording functionality. It has been my major portable media player since I bought it. I already used it to record quite a few TV programs and later play the chips on TV. It never failed me.I did observe a problem with displaying the images rotated by Windows picture and fax viewer. Banding can be seen. However, use other image software may resolve the problem. Also, its speaker is too low to hear clearly in some cases. But it is okay to me as it is common in portable players. In summary, I am very satisfied with the product and strongly recommend it.

Sleek and Good Player
4 Star Review   By member sunsarat - Dec 19, 2007

Strengths: Connection to TV,Size, format support and LCD Display

Weakness: Built-in speaker

This is a very good and cool multi-media player. Plus you can record TV shows with the built in timer to watch on the go. The unit comes with a complete set of accessories including a nifty case that holds the screen upright for viewing on an airplane tray. The player is very easy to use with an easy menu for navigating. The 30GB hard drive offers plenty of storage.

Very cool media player
5 Star Review   By member ngosalia - Nov 28, 2007

Strengths: Nice TV recording capability, works like a hard drive also, just drag and drop the files

Weakness: speaker is a bit low but can't expect much from a device like this.

I was looking to replace the portable dvd player we had and the ipod was a bit too tiny for my daughter to handle. Came across this one during a killer sale on dell, got it for $105, great for the money. Records all the shows my daughter watches and it will be well used on our upcoming overseas trip. Audio is a bit lacking but I didn't take it for the audio capabilities.

Review for philips 30GB protable media player
4 Star Review   By member woshihaoren - Nov 17, 2007

Strengths: Small size. Support multiple formats. Simple user interface

Weakness: Price is bit expensive

I bought this unit for a couple of days. It works great. The size is very small, you can easily put it into your pocket. It supports multiple file formats: mp3, avi... This player has build in record system and you can record whatever you want. and it is easy to operate, very simple user interface. The bad thing is it is pretty expensive. Hopefully Philips could decrease the price to attract more customers. Generally, it is a good product, I like it.

Extremely Portable with Awesome Features
5 Star Review

Strengths: Large hard drive. Screen is easy to view from all angles. The TV record feature is excellent.

Weakness: Exterior speaker is weak at best.

Plenty of hard drive space. I am carrying most of my photos, movies, and lots of music. But my favorite feature is the ability to record television. It is simple to setup and record. The pictures are clear and consise. I like the fast forward that jumps about 30 seconds so you can skip through commercials. I am able to load movies so they can be viewed on trips quietly in the backseat for kids. The BEST place to buy is on www.ebay.com. You can get new ones forunder $100...

Strengths: big capacity. support a lot of format

Weakness: a little big

I like this media player. It has the biggest LCD displayer among all portable media players I have seen. Another feature I like is that it has a support so that it can stand on the table without my holding it. Reasonable price. Recommended.

Could not be happier - Amazing product
5 Star Review   By member imteddy - Nov 1, 2007

Strengths: Nice features, ease of use, Windows Mobile, Simple user interface, 30GB, portability, built in speakers, direct recording

Weakness: Speakers not loud enough, bundled software issues, weight

I had been debating for quite sometime to purchase an Ipod, a Zune, or something else that fits my budget and does what I want out of a portable multimedia device. Either you pay too much for the brand name (personally I am not a brand name fan) or else you do not get everything that you want. I bought this PMC from Dell.com for the lowest price of the season I believe. Its not just the price, but at $105 this item is irresistible. This item is worth every penny otherwise too. It comes with Windows mobile, where you just have to scroll using few keys and the interface looks all too familiar due to the popular Windows interface. The size of the HDD is 30GB (effectively about 27.7 GB as it showed on my system). It plays the songs/movies and shows images with real ease. The resolution for my VCD quality videos was very impressive on the 3.5" screen. The sound on inbuilt speakers is not the best. But com'on who buys such devices to listen to the sound on the in-built speakers. They are good enough if you want to listen to music or watch video in a quiet room, but if you want to drown yourself in the sound, get a good pair of headphones. I have not yet used the pair of headphones that came with this device, but I use a better one. The weight of the device is a little more than you would expect, but i guess 3.5" LCD screen has to play some role in it. Another good feature is the ability to play TV on it and directly record onto the device. The user guide states that the device requires the conversion software that comes bundled with the device and also Windows Media Player 10. I changed from WMP 11 to 10 and then installed the software. It just did not identify the device. I ensured I have Windows XP SP 2 and everything else was in accordance with PC requirement. However, the software did not recognize the device. I tried the troubleshooting options, still to no avail. My computer does identify the device and shows it up in My computer -> Devices, but their software just does not identify. So I uninstalled the software. After that I connected the device directly to my computer and it popped up a window for me, and also showed it as an MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) device. I was able to open it up as a USB hard disk on my system and can drag and drop files into it. This helped me to copy large files at fast rates (like 2 min for 500 MB or so, contrary to what I read about it earlier). It also played .avi (divx format) for me directly, without any more conversion. I dragged and dropped mp3 songs and that it played without any trouble. Overall I am very happy with the device and I strongly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a PMC.

Strengths: Size, format support, large LCD

Weakness: Built-in speaker is week, but I did not expect anything from it.

Strengths: Size, Effect, Function

Weakness: Price

I owned this cute stuff only for one week, but I loved it too much. It is beyond on my expectation, since I don't like philips product. The truth prove that that is my bias, at least this one meets my needs. If you want to enjoy high tech., just go for it. You won't feel regret.
