Apple iPod Video
4.5 Star Review  letsgodigital.org - Nov 27, 2005

Apple iPod is hot. Whether you like it or not, whether you are a Windows or Mac freak or just that average consumer behind his desktop or notebook, Apple is everywhere. Of course the iPod also caught my eye, especially Apple's latest introduction; <a href="http://www.letsgodigital.org/html/review/apple/ipod_video/player_EN0.html" target="_blank"><font color="#336699"><b>Apple iPod Video</b></font></a> is of great interest to me. It features a sharp and colourful display and is able to show me my favourite video clips, films and pictures. A whole bunch of them because the storage capacity reaches up to 60GB! Apple iPod Video | 5th generation - White
2 Star Review  productwiki.com - Jan 18, 2011

Another great product from Apple. This amazing machine can not only play music and browse photos, but it can play video as well. Now you can download your favourite TV shows and movies, and watch them on the go! ... PROS: (1) thinner than the previous generation (2) great UI - easy to navigate large libraries of music (3) great battery life - lasts about 60 hours (for music) on a single charge ... CONS: (1) not a great video watching experience - the screen is small (2) only compatible with H264 and MPEG4 encoded video (3) aging product - no longer available from the manufacturer (4) only 60GB of storage - larger capacity iPods are now available (5) very prone to scratches - the back is finished in chrome

Very cool product! iPod video 60GB (white)
4 Star Review   By member babicag - Jul 2, 2006

Strengths: Lots of space (60GB) and fits easily into a bag or pocket. Color display is awesome.

Weakness: Uses up a lot of battery for digital photo transfer(withcamera connector); likes to freeze once in a while.

This is quite a tool to do many things. I love the fact that you can store your digital photos on it directly from the camera. The slideshow works nicely but takes some time to load for viewing it. Changing from one song to another between different Cds takes longer than I would have thought.(Depending of the size:5-40 sec.) The EQ adjustments are not that big of a help, esp. for using the AAC in order to put on as many Cds as possible. Sometimes the iPod takes a long time to establish a working connection to my iMac G5 or doesn't want to do that at all. (this happens rarely though). A protection case is highly recommended since the iPod has a very touchy skin. The click wheel is a nice feature and easy to use. The included instruction for the set-up is kept too simple so that it's confusing for non-computer-people. Apple's online manual is a better way to find help . Overall: 4 out of 5 stars; Very handy product that can be used for many things

The best yet!
5 Star Review   By member mfratzke - Jan 16, 2006

Strengths: Incredible screen, the thinnest 60GB iPod, typical Apple quality.

Weakness: Short battery life when playing video.

Wow, they've done it again. In mid-2005 I purchased a 60GB iPod Photo and was blown away. Well, that love affair didn't last long because once I saw the screen on this, I had to have it. I haven't been disappointed. The screen is huge and crystal clear. Really it is quite nice for playing movies and TV shows. You'll be amazed. The device is thin for one with 60GB of storage and of course the design is simple and elegant. Typical Apple quality in both the software and the hardware.

Great improvement to the 4G iPod but some firmware glitches.
4 Star Review   By member KLancelot - Dec 26, 2005

Strengths: Addition of video, color screen, thinner size, removal of remote adapter

Weakness: Firmware is slow and reacts slowly, screen is too small to watch video for long, no accessories included: no dock, no AV cable, no charger; no longer compatible with Firewire.

The above says it all. The screen is great. The item to expand on is the slowness of the firmware. Moving to the next song means the next song plays for a second or two before the song information appears on the screen. This should be corrected in future versions of the firmware but right now, 1.0 is it and it's buggy. The other item to expand on is the lack of a charger and dock. All of these items and the AV cable are separate purchases. Also I've had no scratch issues but I encased it in plastic before I starting really using it.

iPod Video 5th Generation 60GB MP3 Player - White (60GB Internal Hard Drive)
5 Star Review   By member dboer21 - Dec 10, 2005

Strengths: Same great interface as the preceeding iPods. Extremely user-friendly! Great video reslotuioon for the size screen.

Weakness: Need to purchase additional accessories as the accessories from the preceeding iods are not compatible with this unit. iTrip and case, etc are specific to the iPod video

Overall this iPod is the best yet. Very user friendly, plenty of storage space (60GB), and a great feature of being able to download and play videos and even TV shows such as Lost. I would highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a lot of storage space for all their music and then the option to playback video.

iPOD 60GB White Fifth Generation is Awesome
4 Star Review   By member mark909 - Dec 10, 2005

Strengths: Wider screen, more compact, very light, videos play very well, extremely easy to use and set up. Integrates well with existing iPOD and iTUNES. Very nice sound quality.

Weakness: No accessories came with the iPOD, including AC adaptor and docking station.

This iPOD is very sleek and stylish. It took no time to figure how to use. Full user manual on CD is very helpful for more involved functions. Have downloaded several videos already and they view very clear. Very excited about storing photos from my digital camera. Very easy to transfer to the iPOD. Would have expected an AC adaptor/charger and docking station to come with this product. Also, maybe a card/code good for some iTunes music or videos, especially given the price of the product. Overall, this iPOD is a great value for its price.

Great device, if-fy quality, draconian software
4 Star Review   By member rshackelford - Dec 9, 2005

Strengths: A wonderful player. It's a stupid thing, I know, but I really, really like seeing the album art while the song plays.

Weakness: Why won't they give us a decent 7-band EQ? Worse yet, why is iTunes such a Nazi about letting us move songs around in ways that are perfectly legal?

Love the player. Althought the click wheel on mine doesn't exactly fit precisely. But why, oh why, oh why do they refuse to give us a decent EQ? Everybody else gives you one, but not Apple. Why? The real problem is iTunes. It won't let you copy your own songs to your own computer. Plug in your iPod and iTunes will ERASE all the songs you didn't get from it. This is crazy. Use Media Monkey instead. It's free, plus it let's you choose which songs get copied where. Plus, it's got neat features and plugins.

Cool stuff to have and great iPod
4 Star Review   By member isotemp98 - Dec 5, 2005

Strengths: Wide screen, thinner, lighter, and vivid video play, easy to use and cool

Weakness: not much video to play on it and no charger is supplied. A little overpriced.

It is the latest iPod and the largest capacity. 15,000 songs and 25,000 photos are quite enough for me and compact to bring everywhere. love the bigger screen and the sound quality. Clickwheel is very easy to use. Looks cool and great. I watched LOST with this iPod and enjoyed it on the way home. Apple needs to put more video which can be watched with this iPod though. The optional charger is overpriced and should be included in the box at a price of $400 !!!

iPOD video 60 GB, white
3 Star Review   By member drstephanhoffmann - Nov 29, 2005

Strengths: -easy to use -great for storing digital pictures - great software (iTunes) included to rip CDs

Weakness: - not very scratch resistent -battery is not removable -very expensive - no protective case included

The iPOD 60 GB in white is a very stylish and nice product. It is easy to use for beginners and works excellent with Windows XP. Unfotunetly, no protective case is included for this scratch sensitive and expensive MP3 player. In addition, no rack is included. The price is too expensive. No software to transfer videos on the iPOD is included.

This thing RULES!!
5 Star Review   By member ShoNet - Nov 22, 2005

Strengths: Pluses: So thin - same thickness as the iPod Mini, extraordinary display of video. Mine shipped with the battery already charged.

Weakness: Minus: I was surprised that no belt clip is included. Does come with a carrying case, though.

The video on this is surprisingly crisp and clear. I am extremely pleased with my upgrade from the mini to this unequalled player. I was slightly disappointed that Apple didn't cough up for at least 1 measley video for the price. There's nothing worse than getting a new toy and not being able to play with it immediately. That's such a minor gripe, and is quickly left in the dust once you load your vids, pics and songs. I am totally enjoying showing everybody TikiBar TV (check podcasts in the iTunes store)

I Love My New iPod
4 Star Review   By member kmanthey - Nov 20, 2005

Strengths: Love the new video.

Weakness: The only thing I can think of is that it is a little heavier than I thought it would be.

I bought myself this iPod as an early Christmas present. My daughters each have a mini and I borrowed them for the treadmill, etc. I decided on the iPod video because I needed a lot of space to put my music collection of over 400 CDs. After price shopping and finding the best deal through pricegrabber.com, I went for it. I'm finding that it is a job that is a little tedious to import them all onto the iPod. But, once the job is done I think it is going to be just great. The first thing I did was to go on iTunes just to buy a video and check it out. It proved to be very clear and sounds great too.

iPod just keeps getting better and better!
5 Star Review   By member VideoGamePlayer - Nov 19, 2005

Strengths: Video support with color screen makes this an exception player. Excellent user interface and controls. Very intuitive.

Weakness: Supplied case for player is CHEAP! Have to charge player while connected to PC or pay Apple another $30 for USB charger adapter. Pricy!

All in all, I think this is the best MP3 player around. Although the video screen isn't that big, it still gets the job done. Although the device isn't cheap, I still think it is work the money. Given the price of the device, I would think Apple would supply a much better case for it then they do. The case that comes with it isn't really hardly a case at all. Also, out of the box the device has to be charged via the USB cable connected to the PC. If you want to just plug it into the wall, you have to pay Apple another $30 for that. I think Apple should have included this with the device itself.

Great Buy
5 Star Review   By member NotRick - Nov 16, 2005

Strengths: Plays Video, Mp3, and photo's

Weakness: No good cases for the 5th gereration iPod

Overall the video ipod is a great product. The hard drive is huge, and now that it plays video's the new ipod is a pocket entertainment system. The worst part about it is there are no good cases for the ipod so im paranoid about damaging it. The little rubber sleve that comes with it is a joke. yesterday i picked it up and there was a hair on the screen i nearly had a heart attack thinking i had already scratched it. i downloaded a useful little program called HandBreak that allows me to rip dvd's into mp4 format. you need to change the screen resolution to 320x240 for full screen dvd's it will be 320x??? for a widescreen dvd. i also animated a flip book for one of my classes and by importing the pictures onto my ipod i can roll the touch wheel and play my mini flip book right off the screen. So with my entire archive of photos, Movies, and pictures i have everything ill ever need, to show off to my freinds or entertain myself while waiting in line at the bank, in my front pocket.

60gig 5th Gen iPod is a Winner!
5 Star Review   By member dwighttx - Nov 8, 2005

Strengths: Thin form factor. Screen has greatly improved since the last model. Very watchable with movies. Believe it or not you can actually use it for an MP3 player too!!!

Weakness: No accessories included. You have to buy a docking station and power adapter.

Couple of interesting points: - A power adapter was NOT included with the iPod. I used a USB Power adapter kit that was $9.99 for a wall adapter and a DC cigarette lighter adapter (can do auto or plane sockets) and had no problems... cheaper then the $39 Auto and $29 Wall adapters that Apple sells. - Audiobooks have to be converted to ACC and then converted (renamed) to .M4B files so that they can be bookmark-able. Several good scripts available from www.dougscripts.com to help with this. - Album Art usually isn't included when you download (except from the iTunes Store) or ripped a CD. Again, several scripts available at dougscripts.com that "help" although it is mostly a manual task. I spent about 5 hours setting the artwork for almost 10K songs. I later found a great script called Fetch Art (members.cox.net/afries...) that would have cut the time to about 45 minutes with a fairly high accuracy rate. - A two hour movie exports from QT in about 8+ HOURS, insanely slow. I have tried ffmpegX which is a lot faster but iTunes plays the resulting file but won't load it into the iPod. I have looked at several "tutorials" for creating movie content for the 5thGen iPod and still no go. - Movies/Video on the iPod are actually VERY watch-able. I had thought that the only thing I would use the Video for was to show people that it can play video but now I am thinking that ripping Movies to the iPod for long trips is actually an option (I have two movies for my upcoming trip). There are a couple of good utilities on versiontracker.com that help with ripping a CD straight to the iPod. - Photos can be pulled from iPhoto (and other locations). I set up a folder of "iPod Photos" in iPhoto and picked several to include on the iPod. Nice transitions but I don't think I will use this feature very much. - TV-Out: I read a review that said that a mini-plug to Stereo AV Camcorder cable ($3-4) can be used to hook the iPod to a TV to display movies and photos. You have to switch one of the audio RCAs for the Video to get it to work since Apple seemed to wired their cable differently. Apple's cable is $19. Video quality is comparable to Video Tape (anyone remember that?). Overall I like it. Thinner form factor makes it more "pocket-able". The screen is awesome and the added Video and Photo functions just add to a great product.

Ipod video missing essentials components
2 Star Review   By member suggarstalk - Nov 8, 2005

Strengths: Good sound quality, Clear screen.

Weakness: Missing AC adapter! Commical accessories, no FM receiver, no voice recorder.

In order to save money (Apple customer service's own words), the Ipod video does not come with a charger. Only way you can charge it is through your USB port. Means you can't charge it without your PC. For a product who's battery life is less than stellar that becomes a serious problem. Only way around it is to shell out additional money for a charger. Frankly if Apple needed to inprove it's bottom line by cutting corners, I would have preferred they skipped those ridiculous earphones. Had I known Apple was cutting such essential corners, I would have looked at other players.

Best iPod Yet!
5 Star Review   By member Muero - Oct 17, 2005

Strengths: Huge hard drive, great-looking screen, easy to use interface, very good sound quality, easy synching with iTunes

Weakness: Battery isn't replaceable

Most people will find it nearly impossible to fill up this huge 60 GB iPod, but the fact that it can be used as an external hard drive helps.. The screen is bigger than on my 4th generation iPod, and its higher resolution makes everything, including videos, look great. Even if you've never used an iPod, you'll figure out the controls in about 2 seconds. It's so easy to use and use and use, for 20 hours at a time!
