Ipods seem to be taking over computers
2 Star Review   By Marie Davis on OnSale.com - Mar 23, 2007

Strengths: Can listen to music, non-stop

Weakness: Need to make replacements on parts, soon, and often.

Very popular gadget, got one for my birthday, and I enjoy it very much! Seems like the kids that use it more frequent, have more complaints. It's on every kids I know, wish list., So there you have it!

What a great way to carry your tunes with you!
5 Star Review   By dgearke on OnSale.com - Mar 4, 2007

Strengths: Good interface, lots of gadgets available. Plenty of memory

Weakness: iTunes!

We bought this for my son a year ago. It's been through all the things an 11 year-old can throw at it. Still working and looking great (though it's been in a protective case since day one). We like to use it with a Griffin iTune in the car. 128 kbps is NOT high enough quality for this application. We'd use iTunes if music could be downloaded at say, 256 kbps, but alas, it can't. I'm about to buy one for myself!

Just RIGHT!
4 Star Review   By member exnihilo - Mar 7, 2006

Strengths: Video Playback. Larger Screen. Larger Capacity. Smaller Size.

Weakness: Battery life seems low. Prone to scratches. A/V cable NOT included.

I have not purchased an iPod until this new model came out. I personally felt that it was always just a bit too expensive, but now, with all the additional features for the same price, I finally felt that the price was right. Video playback is very compelling on the small screen, and looks surprisingly good when connected to TV (cable NOT included, unfortunately). I use not JUST for listening and viewing media, but also for presentations in my classroom. I am very satisfied with the new 5g iPod.

The BEST MP3 Player in the Market
5 Star Review   By member cwlert - Feb 27, 2006

Strengths: Ease of Use, Sharp and Clear Colorful picture with great slide show, Perfect sound with small headphone

Weakness: Short of battery's life, very sensitive button, No AC adapter, Very often ERROR...FREEZE Screen, Quite complicated to download Video and Play in the ipod.

It is worth to buy it but I have to pay extra for the AC adapter. Everything is extra cost for this ipod...nothing is ever included. Anyway, this is still the best one if compare to the other mp3 player.

Small tool for big sound
5 Star Review   By member willieUsj - Jan 28, 2006

Strengths: You need a radio station library to even get close to filling it up and that's a beautiful thing. Put it on shuffle and let it play. I've been known tp put mine on the JBL ring and work all day.

Weakness: Having to hook it up to and change the library on ITunes to lose, say, the Christmas music

Great gaget, especally with upgraded headphones. You don't need the T.O. Bose Headphones to enjoy but the ear buds, though adaquit, are the weakest part of this device. Even Phillips ear phones are all it takes (for about $20) to get better range. Afterall the entire range of a tune is captured so get the output devices to do it justice/

Ipod with Video
5 Star Review   By member kandlg - Jan 9, 2006

Strengths: All the great Ipod features plus video, long battery life with music only

Weakness: About 2.5 hour battery life with video

I think the Ipod line is great and the 5th gen with video is no exception. It is very similar to the click wheel version but has a larger, very nice color screen. As claimed by Apple, it seems to have longer battery life when listening to music, but watching video drains it quickly in about 2.5 hours. The battery life limits its usefulness as a video player and I would suggest an external battery pack if you want to use this feature extensively. The video is small, but good enough for captive audiences stuck on cars, planes, etc. I use Nero Recode to convert the video to the right codec and format. Nero will convert DVDs if you use a ripper first. I use the PSP compatible format default setting in Nero and it compresses a two hour movie to about 1GB. I have also converted TV shows from my DVR computer without any problems. Occaisionally I notice blockiness, but overall the video quality is good enough. The kids love it. We travel frequently on long airline flights and this is a good way to entertain them. If you are looking for an mp3 player I can certainly recommend the Ipod. The video is not essential but it is a nice plus. You will probably want to get this version just for the improved battery life.

One of the best ipods
4 Star Review   By member isotemp98 - Jan 6, 2006

Strengths: 2.5" side lcd, thinner and lighter than ipod photo, easy to use clickwheel, large capacity, vivid video play

Weakness: charger is not included and the case in the package looks cheap.

It is fun to have a ipod video. 30gb ipod is larger than ipod photo 20gb at the same price. It plays video also, so it is a better ipod. It is traditional ipod white color, but still as cool as black color. 2.5" lcd is bigger than previous version. the whole size is thinner and have a lighter weight. Easier to bring everywhere and fun to watch the video, Clickwheel is very easy to use. The optional charger is overpriced and should be included.

2 Star Review   By member pmsrdh - Jan 4, 2006

Strengths: attractive, large storage, great sound

Weakness: fragile, anything will scratch screen, customer service

I got this for Christmas, already had to return one as it started to pause itself automatically. I took it back to the store and the clerk wanted to charge me a 10% restocking fee to exchange a defective item. He thought he was SO smart! After talking to the manager, I did get it exchanged without a restocking fee. The experience has completely soured me on Apple though.

To Pod or not to Pod!
4 Star Review   By member Pacman40 - Dec 29, 2005

Strengths: Compact, Good picture on the LCD. 30GB of extra storage for laptop, that is if you have any room after uploading all your MP3's.

Weakness: Easy to scratch! No firewire charging units available from Apple. Battery life when playing videos.

Easy to see why Apple has dominated the MP3 player market, the 5G is one of the lightest while providing some of the largest storage capacities available. Battery life could be better, but spinning a 30GB HD is power consuming. Can't wait until the larger capacity (30/60GB) flash memory drives become available! Had some problems (rebooting/not completing sync) when installing iTunes and doing the initial transfer but after a firmware update all works fine. Purchased from Apple, was given a three week delivery window, received an email two days later stating that unit had shipped from Shanghai, China and unit arrived via FedEx the next day! Way to go Apple! Ordered the AC charger with unit, got that two days later.

USB Sync is a big problem
1 Star Review   By member sleephil - Dec 26, 2005

I am an avid MAC user and this is my 4th iPod. This one may go back to the store. We have several Mac computers at home and our "media hub" is a flat panel iMac that does not have USB 2. I have a good size music library (about 35 gig) and it has taken a little over TWELVE hours to transfer to my ipod - not done yet. This is something that took very little time via Fire Wire. The net result is that I don't expect to be able to try my new toy out for well over a day (or two?) I also don't think I want to wait for my Podcasts to update on a daily basis. Big error on the fire wire without offering some sort of solution for those of us with computers that are only three years old. Does anyone know of a solution?

Excellent
4 Star Review   By member grdloizaga - Dec 10, 2005

Strengths: Screen, audio and video quality, slideshows, design, size, case included

Weakness: (if used mostly for video viewing) poor battery, NO POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED, no Firewire™ connections, little unsastisfying picture viewing, scratches

Very good device. Best of all iPods. I'd say that the power adapter is necessary and they ough to include it on the case. Video quality is nice, but if you want to squash the full video features of the device you need the TV wire and Quicktime PRO 7.0.3 (to export the videos to an iPod compatible .m4v format) At the end you pay 100$+ beacuse of that. I highly recommend this iPod.

Strengths: Very nice display. User friendly.

Weakness: Not many videos available yet. Maybe more to come in the future?

I would recommend the Apple IPOD 30GB Video to anyone. It is worth the little extra cost. Search around out there and you might be able to find a great mail in rebate like I did.

Overall nice, but battery needs work
5 Star Review

Strengths: Ease of use, good video display

Weakness: poor battery & video control features

Unlike most traditional iPod users, I purchased this unit to watch videos, e.g. movies. Considered different Archos models but the iPod's 'cool' factor overrode its shortcomings. Importing DVD movies to iTunes can be accomplished by freeware available online, no need for QT Pro. The conversion process takes ~2 hours on an Athlon 64 3700+ box. Unlike some competitors, Videora doesn't allow you to stretch 16:9 movies to fill up 4:3 screen, thereby leaving black strips on top and bottom of video. A typical commercial DVD eats up ~700+ Mb, so you can dump a dozen or two movies on disk, with plenty of room for your music. I bought the docking station that connects via S-video to my TV so that I can watch my favorite shows on large screen. Now comes the gripes. The iPod wheel and control are swell for music, or perhaps pictures, but are quite lacking for typical video control. There's no easy way to skip to next scenes or chapters. The current function requires you move your finger(s) over the wheel repeatedly to fast forward a few seconds of playtime at a time. If you try to forward 'too much', say, to middle of movie from the beginning, it has the tendency to lock up, i.e. sitting there staring at you doing nothing. The only way out is to 1) wait and pray for it to come back 2) reboot. Plenty of other folks have complained about the battery which doesn't last > 1.5 hours playing video. There's nothing more annoying than for the thing to crap out toward the end of a movie. If you want features like closed caption or subtitles then you're SOL. Overall, it's a joy to own one. The video features fulfills 80% of my requirements. Now, I can watch my shows in bed, during breaks at work, etc. inconspicuously. I'm planning to buy the piggy-back external battery to make it last long enough on flights.

Putting Videos On your Ipod
4 Star Review

Strengths: This will tell you another way than to pay that 30$ to get Quicktime pro.

Weakness: none.

This is a way to put videos on your Ipod without getting Quicktime Pro for $30. It is called Videora Ipod Converter. www.videora.com/en-us/... What you do is load your videos and then you can open the program, click the convert tab, and browse for a video. After you "transcode" a video, you can go to "My Computer" and click your hard drive, go to Program Files, find Videora, click it, and then click videos, then put that into your Itunes library. It will go onto your ipod and it will be in the correct format. Make sure your use the default transcode option to make the video "Mpeg-4/320x240/768kbps Stero/128kbps". It will work on your Ipod and Enjoy watching.

Battery Life
2 Star Review

Strengths: Good for a few weeks

Weakness: Horrible internal battery

After just two months the internal battery of my ipod broke making it useless i have sent it to apple and am expecting the same thing to happen. I suggest buying another MP3 player such as one of Creative's like the Zen Micro or Zen Microphoto. My friend has owned a Micro for over 4 months and said he has had no problems with it.

they took the best and made it better
4 Star Review   By member mec407 - Nov 21, 2005

Strengths: beautiful design, stellar audio quality, compact and light, excellent value

Weakness: no FireWire, incompatible with most online music stores other than iTunes Music Store, scratches easily

Somehow Apple managed to take what was already the best portable music player on the market and make it even better. The new, larger screen is great, and the device itself is thinner and lighter than previous models. My only complaints, and they are minor ones, is that you no longer have a choice of USB or FireWire, and it scratches very easily. Nevertheless, I am thoroughly happy with this iPod.

Great storage device
4 Star Review   By member simpsonsrule - Nov 19, 2005

Strengths: Great USB storage device, very portable and compact, also great for audio books!

Weakness: Scratches easily, doesn't come with a manual, clicker pad is not the easiest to use

I'm using this for a different purpose than many who might purchase an iPod, but I mainly needed a compact storage device to backup and transfer many GB of video. After looking at the prices of 4GB pen drives, I decided to purchase this 30GB ipod, which was comparable in price but had more storage capabilities. It is of course larger than a pen drive, but not by all that much. I'm very pleased with the speed of the USB transfers and with how light this is - it is very easy to travel with. As others have said, it scratches easily, and I find that the clicker pad takes some getting used to - at times it does not seem responsive enough for scrolling. I had to go into an Apple store to ask a few questions as there is no manual (aside from online documentation). So, for example, there is no way to change the responsiveness of the clicker pad, unfortunately.

Best iPod EVER !!!
5 Star Review   By member fk51785 - Nov 11, 2005

Strengths: Plays videos, color screen, thin, 30GB storage, and looks good.

Weakness: Not much any. Price is little high.

This is my current iPod, and I just love it. It's the best iPod out there. Plays videos and displays color photos. Supports the new TV show/Music video features from iTunes music store. It's thin and light to carry. Love the large 30GB storage and it looks so cool.

Great MP3 player
5 Star Review   By member yancat - Nov 1, 2005

Strengths: Video, slim and sexy outlook, big screen, user-friendly interface

Weakness: Need to pay extra to play videos, short battery life, no AC adaptor and no dock and case on the market

I was one of those who got this 30GB Video iPod right after it was released. I was impressed by how fast Apple.com got it shipped. ( I received it less than 36 hours after it was shipped from Shanghai, China) It's so cute and slim that my friend's 4G looks bulk seating beside it. The screen is larger, and I am really happy with the resolution. I purchased some video from Itune store. It works like a charm! There are some downsides of this product. The battery is not changable, and won't last for long on itself when you play videos. For most of the time, I use and charge it at the same time. But there's one time I noticed the battery went down to 3/4 from full after I showed two MTV videos to my friends. Because of the battery life, an AC power adapter is a must. The AC was not included in the standard package and I had to pay $30 extra to get one immediately after I received the iPod. Also, you would have to either buy videos from itune store or purchase Quicktime Pro from apple to play videos on the iPod.

Great new device from Apple
4 Star Review   By member compcons - Oct 21, 2005

Strengths: Bright and clear screen, excellent music playback, device size, ease of use

Weakness: Battery time may be weak, video conversion issues for some file formats, no AC adapter

I've only had this a few days, but thought I should put an immediate two cents in for those thinking about purchasing it. The unit itself: USB only -- fine with me, I don't have firewire on any of my PCs (I'm not a mac user...yet...although I'm getting closer.) I will unfortunately need to buy an AC adapter and video cables (things that should be included) to use it to its fullest extent. For now, USB charging is fine (also works through a powered USB hub when PC is powered off.) Click wheel works as expected. Missing accessory jack next to headphone jack: I never had anything that used this. I always purchased universal accessories since I assumed Apple might remove this someday. Physical appearance: Thinner, lighter. Same height and width. Comes with cheap neoprene case, I'm using iPod socks until I can find a good case with a belt clip. No scratches yet, but I've been careful. iTunes integration/installation: I had a few difficulties with the iPod rebooting during iTunes transfer, but I restored/reflashed the firmware, and now working great. Works just like any other iPod (that means easy sync and transfer.) Transfer speeds are about 1 song/sec with USB 2.0 (about the same as my previous 3G). Standard music playback: Same as previous iPods, as far I can tell. I wouldn't call myself an audiophile, but I wouldn't call myself a casual user either. It sounds as great as my 3G 10GB iPod as well as my 512MB shuffle. But note I can't stand Apple's white earphones. I never use them -- I find the sound quality mediocre and they don't fit in my ears well (my suggestion: Sennheiser's MX500 earbuds). Photo capability: I haven't tried this yet, but expect that it is as good as the previous models that offered this feature, if not better. I hear the new video chip allows for smoother transitions between photos. Videos: I have not yet downloaded any videos from Apple's store (except for some free Gorillaz ones I got a few months ago, which work fine.) I have though found some converters on the web (such as the Videora converter) to convert some short films I have already. The quality through MPEG-4 is excellent. The playback is smooth with everything I've done before. I hope to try some DVD conversion shortly. Since I don't have the AV cable yet, I haven't tried TV output. Yes, the screen is not small, but not bad. Viewing angle excellent. After all, I'm young and have 20/20 vision... Extras: Nice that I can finally sync with Outlook easy (really an upgrade in iTunes 5, not the iPod itself), and that the contact info is displayed better than my old iPod. Games are the same as before (meaning my 3G iPod), just in color. There is a stopwatch, world clock (great), and screen lock as well -- all features noted with the iPod nano. Battery life: I played about 4 hours of music (and skipping a fair amount of songs while playing) and the indicator shows half. That's all I can say about it at the moment, since I've mostly been playing with it while plugged in. But with my old 3G (which still has its original battery which lasts 6 hours continuous play), the battery would be about dead at this point. Other note: The screen on mine has a dead pixel. Don't think Apple will do anything about it. It's white, so it doesn't show while playing music, and is hardly noticable during video playback (except during really dark scenes.) This isn't a complete review, but hope it does provide info for those looking for more info on this model. Is it for you? If you're into the Apple iTunes store and such, for sure. If not, feel free to look at other brands, but Apple still has the best thing going out there IMHO.

Think Again!
1 Star Review   By member ccb - Oct 17, 2005

Weakness: Everything when it comes to the consumer!

Let me guess, this latest piece of equipment will put the ipod Nano to shame right? Let's think again! After purchasing this piece of $%&*7, I've had to put a laptop in the shop, replace my hard drive on my PC and oh I almost forgot, wasted $50+ in purchases for the %$&))#. The *%#@% was defective. There was a story about this same issue on the local news. I overlooked it thinking it was an isolated case, never again. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me!
