Motorola DCP501
2 Star Review  productwiki.com - Nov 11, 2011

The Motorola DCP501 is an all-in-one receiver from 2003 originally retailing for $900. It simplifies the hookup of everything from cable TV and satellite receivers, and unifies audio and video media playback and amplification within one device. It combines the function of a digital cable receiver, a DVD/CD/MP3 player, a 100-watts-per-channel surround receiver, and an AM/FM stereo receiver. This piece has extensive input and output ports, including front-panel audio/video hookups for a camcorder or gaming console and a Toslink optical input for a direct digital-audio hookup with an external device. A prominent feature in this piece is that any video input source can be converted and/or channeled to any of the three video outputs for maximum convenience when using the DCP501 with a VCR, DVR (digital video recorder), or other device. Features Space saving, all-in-one system houses a DVD/CD/MP3 player, audio/video surround receiver with 100 watts x 5, and cable reception Interactive cable receiver for analog ... PROS: (1) lots of components combined into a single package (2) Dolby Digital, DTS and Dolby Pro Logic II support work great and produce clear, impressive audio (3) enough output volume for most small to medium sized rooms ... CONS: (1) frequently suffers from random internal failures, poor quality control (2) front panel display is difficult to read even a few feet away, especially during the day (3) very little info is displayed on-screen (4) cable receiver misses a lot of stations and is slow to react

5 Star Review   By member patrickdefalco - Dec 12, 2006

Strengths: Total versatility - does absolutely everything in one box No more renting equipment - I own it!

Weakness: Size - it is so big it is tough to get it into a standard size entertainment center

Great price on a great product - I am very happy with being able to see all the channels on mulitiple tvs that I used to only get on one set. I bought 2!

3 Star Review   By member Lurker3 - Feb 7, 2006

Strengths: nice combination of several components (DVD + amp/receiver/tuner + cable box)into one, with only one remote ! :) 5.1 Surround sound

Weakness: Quite a large unit. Not compatible with Time Warner Digital Cable (and maybe others)

This is a pretty nice unit. It combines a DVD player, AM/FM tuner, Receiver/Amplifier, and cable box all into one unit. Features are nice and work well, with lots of connection options in the back, including digital audio and pre-amp outputs, as well as the speakers connections for 5.1 surround speaker systems. The only problem I have had is that although the unit is advertised as a Digital Cable tuner, it apparently is not compatible with my Time Warner Cable service provider here in Houston, although they use Motorolla boxes too, but a different model. So i am using it as an analog cable tuner (it can tune channels up to 99, which are analog). So if you want to use it as a digital tuner, definitely contact your cable provider first to see if it is compatible. Also, the unit is larger than other Receiver/Amps I have seen and used, so make sure your shelving / stand / entertainment center can accommodate this unit. While this unit doesn't have the most features and options out there, it is good enough for basic use in a second room. I use it to drive a TV and speakers in my bedroom. You can can get better/more specialized units, but they also cost a lot more. For this price, you get a pretty good deal combining a DVD player, as well as amp/receiver and cable box. So if you are on a budget or simply need a basic setup, or even to save having to have three units (and three remotes!!!) this product is for you. While not top-of-the line, it is definitely a good product and recommended for its intended purpose.

Strengths: AM/FM Tuner, Sound Quality, Quality of Design And Construction. Integration of many quality functions in a single unit, multiple i/o's

Weakness: Awkward size & Shape, Difficult to program, Remote difficult to use & confusing

Generally a very good to excelent piece of multi-purpose equipment that provides very good to excelent performance in all stated functions.Somewhat tricky to initially program. The remote could be better designed for ease of use.
