Sony STR-DN1040
4 Star Review  cnet.com - Jun 14, 2013

THE GOOD: The <b>Sony STR-DN1040</b> is the most feature-packed AV receiver youll find at this price. Theres built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and AirPlay, plus eight HDMI inputs, which is more than any of its competitors. It also sports a truly modern user interface with crisp, high-definition graphics. And the sound quality is fittingly excellent for a premium AV receiver. THE BAD: Its somewhat expensive and more than what most buyers need. The included remote is cluttered with buttons, sure to put-off non-techies. And Sonys automatic speaker calibration wasnt quite perfect in our listening environment. THE BOTTOM LINE: The Sony STR-DN1040 is a truly first-class AV receiver, boasting tons of wireless technology and a pretty user interface, at a premium price.

Great Receiver but has some issues
5 Star Review   By soundman576 on Sony - Official Store - Mar 1, 2014

Once you get it set up its a great product (BUT) I have a D-TV sat box and I tried ALL THE CODES in the dn-1040 instruction manual including the ones for the other products under sat top boxes (p122) with no success to program my HR24-500 Receiver with the RM-AAP102 Remote that came with the STR-DN1040 I called sony and they struck out (The person on the sony help line was very professional and did her very best to help me) The only thing left for me is to upgrade my sat box and hope the new one is programmable with the remote and the sony a/v receiver. This receiver cost more than expected (I:m RETIRED) but on the other hand in the long run its better to spend the extra 100.00 and not be disappointed later after the initial cost. This receiver has more bells and whistles than I'll ever figure out how to use. I'm a little disappointed that it fell short on the programmable code section. Other than that its a great product and it sounds better than I ever heard before with the sony woofer, and the 3 front sony speaker system.

Very satisfied...and relieved
5 Star Review   By ChrisR on Sony - Official Store - Feb 16, 2014

I replaced my Yamaha RX-V1500 to take advantage of the HDMI connections. I've been extremely happy so far. The sound coming from my Paradigm Studio/20 speakers, which have been bi-amped, is full and warm. Set up was easy, and I really have enjoyed the TV interface. I miss some of the high end features of my Yamaha, such as extra connections for bi-amping (one must sacrifice the 7.2 and run 5.2 which is fine with me), and the ability to plug the sub woofer into the receiver. But I accept this for the lower cost, and the excellent sound.

Greatly exceeded my expectations
5 Star Review   By RodL on Sony - Official Store - Feb 11, 2014

I bought this to upgrade my mid 80's Fisher rack stero (150watt huge speakers system# and to add surround sound to a new 50 inch tv in my bedroom. I added a nice center channel and 2 smaller rear speakers and am blown away by the sound. I have thrown every source of deep bass at it that I can find and it handles flawlessly while letting me hear the highest treble and even at whisper level all is fabulously clear. The apple airplay hiccups a bit but it does on everything else I play that from, but the direct to the sony output from my NAS or PCs is fabulous and I am creating playlists from 200 gb of music, including lots of apple lossless format, all playing with only slight hesitation as a playlist buffers. I have various HDMI devices #2 blue ray players #one with SACD# apple TV, turntable, TV, hooked up with no issues whatsoever and the wireless connection sees my music on the various PCs I have around the house and my NAS #Synology DS 411 Slim# as I already mentioned. I was disappointed that until this week, the Apple Lossless format wouldn't play but now #an automatic firmware update must have recently happened to the Sony DN1040) that also is playing and it sounds amazing!!!! I am enjoying my music as never before hearing it the way the gods intended. Thank you SONY!!!!

2 Zone Pretty Much Useless. Go for 840 instead
3 Star Review   By Hajmi on Sony - Official Store - Jan 31, 2014

Bought it because my old receiver is dying. Bought it with the idea I can hard wire it out to my speakers in the back yard like I used to. No A/B speaker function so thought 2 zone would do. Should have done more research as not only does one need a 2nd receiver to run the 2nd zone and very few inputs can pass through to the 2nd zone. I like the Wi/Fi and interface function so will keep it. Also got it on sale so returning it and paying for the 840 at this time isn't worth it. Will solve the problem by spending an additional $50 - $100 on a speaker switching bar. Bought it at the Sony store and very disappointed with the lack product knowledge by the sales staff. They were supposed to contact me with a potential solution. I gather their isn't one outside of a switch bar, (Sony doesn't carry), so they are avoiding contact in hopes of the return time will run out.

WOW Factor
5 Star Review   By Dantastic on Sony - Official Store - Jan 17, 2014

I replaced my 2006 ONKYO 5.1 receiver with this model on Boxing Day 2013. The sound and power is impressive. In addition I bought two new 250 watts Klipsch subwoofers. Santa Clause convinced also convinced me to acquire two new Polka TSi500 speakers. This compliments my Sony Blu Ray & Sony 55 inch TV. In all my system comprises of 7 speakers which adheres to this 7.2 model. The hook-up was relatively easy; ensure to get 16 gauge speaker wire cables. Future Shop quoted $300.00 for the hook-up with the calibration. Save your money. With this model Sony included a microphone to measure the distance between all speakers. Remember this generates 165 watts. I have to maintain the volume at 25. Upping the volume over 50 the floors actually shake like an earthquake at 5 on the Richler scale. The Sony engineers excelled in including the bell & whistles notwithstanding the price factor. I've had this model for only 2 weeks and visiting friends were in awe if not jealous. The only downside are the various surround sound modes; not all on have Dolby - could be more experimenting on my part & rereading the manual or contacting the Sony support team for advice. Watching TV on the SAT/Cable has an echo sound. Before buying this model I researched the internet & Sony won the best 2013 receiver award for this particular model. My next adventure is the Sony 4K 70 inch TV when prices dramatically drop.

Worst Receiver Ever
1 Star Review   By Audiophile80 on Sony - Official Store - Jan 5, 2014

As the other reviewer mentioned: STAY away from this receiver!! I have gone through 2 now. All with HDCP issues. If you go to sony's community support thread you will find HUNDREDS of posts of people having issues. With the engineers suggesting to just buy new cables. Also, you can see negative reviews from other retailers. I can't believe this receiver has not been recalled. Stay away and save yourself the headaches that will surely come.

king of the hill
5 Star Review   By ThomastheCoffeeGuy on Sony - Official Store - Jan 3, 2014

A good, solid, clean receiver. Many inputs and outputs, very flexible, and doesn't get too hot when pushing a 7.2 Polk speaker system. But for the price and brand name all this should be expected. What really sold me was the GUI. So easy, fast and simple. My only complaint is I wish there were more 'sound field' options for 7.2 channels. Many of the sound options only run 2 speakers. But that doesn't worry me too much because all the settings are very user friendly and not over complicated and it easy to get the 7.2 set to just how you like it. After searching for several weeks, reading all the reviews, and buying my first new receiver in 20 years, I am 100% happy with my new Sony STR-DN1040.

HDCP Issues - STAY AWAY!!!
1 Star Review   By hdcpproblems on Sony - Official Store - Dec 7, 2013

I would have given this amp a 5 star review simply because you can't beat the value for all of its features and connectivity options. The problem is that I bought this amp to switch my HDMI devices and get nothing but HDCP handshake issues from my sat/catv box. Just about every box out there has the same issue with this amp. The Sony support forum is full of people with the same problem. Perhaps a future firmware update will address the issue and I will increase my rating but until that happens, I would recommend spending the extra money and going with a higher model that isn't prone to HDCP issues. Caveat Emptor

WOW!!!!!
5 Star Review   By MusicLover1 on Sony - Official Store - Oct 4, 2013

Over 35 years of home audio and it took Sony to get it right!!!! This receiver can be Bi-amped and with my Polk towers, I need it. I love the ease of use and the many features. The look, though not delicate, is very appealing and brawny looking. The one thing I hate about not only this receiver but almost all receivers built today is the power ratings. This one says its rating at 165 watts, more like 85-90@ 8ohms...Why do these companies do this? The standard for years was 8ohms, now it is 4-6ohms and apparently distortion ratings mean nothing anymore. Besides this complaint, I have nothing bad to say about the 1040 and would recommend it to anyone

Good device - what I was expecting
4 Star Review   By Flulu on Sony - Official Store - Oct 1, 2013

After using my receiver for almost 2 months, I can say that it is a good device. The sound quality is what i was expecting and it integrates well with the other Sony products I own, thanks to Bravia sync. It is feature pack and everyone of them so far works as promised by Sony. On the negative side the remote control should be simplified as it is too complicated for most people. The worst part is the iOS app. It is terrible and needs tons of improvements. It is currently at version 2.2 and I was expecting something more stable. In fact it hardly does anything it is suppose to do. I can only hope that it is a work in progress. For now the app is not even worth trying.

Nothing here to disappoint
5 Star Review   By starcentral on Sony - Official Store - Sep 23, 2013

The STRDN1040 is a truly amazing AV receiver/amplifier that leaves nothing to disappoint. It can up convert signals from older equipment to HDMI if you need it and can even allow HDMI signals to "pass through" if you want to leave the amp off and just pass through your AV signal directly to your TV. I bought this at the same time as a Sony LED 50" Bravia and couldn't be happier with everything offered in this amplifier. It has 7 HDMI inputs yet still offers analog RCA and component inputs if you need it. Also the built in WI-FI is a plus for connecting to other sources of media, and the menu is high quality like something you would expect from Sony, not some cheap pixelated menu. Too much to list about this amp... enjoy it!

Want more wireless features
4 Star Review   By Apotheosis on Sony - Official Store - Sep 16, 2013

I can stream music to it from my computer over my wireless network which is awesome, but I want to beable to stream video to it as well from my computer. I don't own blueray or dvd player. I play everything on my computer and while I want to build a media computer in the future for my entertainment system I don't have the money for that yet. It would be cool if I can hide my media computer in a closest and have it stream all my media wirelessly to my sony receiver. I would like all video formats to be supported if possible. Also i like the Logitech programmable universal remotes which use a form of wifi instead of inferred to control devices. Make it so your sony receivers can be controlled via wi-fi with the logitech remotes please!!!! I think some simple software updates to this receiver will make all this possible. Would be the greatest receiver on earth if you made all these features possible.

DN-1040 Receiver
5 Star Review   By Woodrat on Sony - Official Store - Sep 5, 2013

Great receiver for my home entertainment system. Only have my F-7000 hooked up so far but even with just those two speakers EVERYTHING sounds much better than the small home theater system I had before. My biggest problem prior to hooking this system up was I couldn't discern the vocal part of many shows on TV and on movies. I ended up using the TV set speakers so I could understand what was being said. Not with these speakers and the DN-1040 everything is crystal clear. I still have a set of B3000's and a set of B1000's to hook up as my back and surround speakers respectively. I'll let you know later how that turns out but we are trying to wire internally in the house and that's going to be a bit of a chore.

Very good receiver but humming noise is anoying
4 Star Review   By cw22 on Sony - Official Store - Aug 22, 2013

Overall I am very satisfied with the STRDN1040. The only downside is, that it emits a humming noise when it is switched on, my old Dennon receiver was not that noisy. I guess this noise is caused by the power supply, Sony should be able to design and deliver something that is more quiet. The sound quality and features of the device are excellent

This is the first Sony A/V receiver I've owned and after getting it setup I don't know why I waited so long. It really packs a Punch for the Price point. Great Features and works very well with my other Sony products. Buy it you won't be sorry.

The all in one Receiver that just works
5 Star Review   By tcviper on Sony - Official Store - Jun 23, 2013

After having owned a STR-DA5600ES for years it was time to search for an upgrade and usually I would only go for another ES series from Sony but when I saw the specs of the 1040 and the addition of Airplay plus the amazing new GUI I was sold immediatelly. Now, a month later, I have to say I simply love the device, everything just works it is fast, intuitive and plays everything you throw at it. Doesn't matter if its through Airplay (IOS), DLNA or vTuner or the Sony Entertainment Network it all just works and that is exactly what I was looking for after all those years. Thank you so much for this Sony, great job!
