Sony STR-DG510
1.5 Star Review  productwiki.com - Nov 15, 2011

The Sony STR-DG510 is a 5.1-channel, home theater A/V receiver that delivers up to 600W of audio power. It features a plethora of inputs and outputs for connecting to nearly any device, not to mention HDMI Pass-Through for passing uncompressed 1080i video directly to an HDMI-capable television. As for its audio components, the STR-DG510 hosts Sony’s original Digital Cinema Sound technology, which uses exclusive DSP technology to recreate the precise environment in which the movies were created. And adjustments to the STR-DG510’s speaker settings are made automatically via Digital Cinema Auto Calibration, ensuring that speaker placement, distance, and delays are all calibrated correctly. The Sony STR-DG510 retails for $299.99 and comes with a 2 year limited warranty. Features 5.1-Channel, A/V Receiver Multiple Inputs/Outputs HDMI Pass-Through Digital Cinema Sound Digital Cinema Auto Infrared Remote Control 2 Year Limited Warranty Specifications AM/FM Presets: 30/30 Power Output: 100W x 5 Channels Dimensions: 16 15/16 ... PROS: (1) Included microphone component significantly increases surround sound quality - automatically adjusts settings to suit given room properties (2) Menus are very sparse and easy to navigate - excellent for users with multiple external devices who are frequently switching back and forth ... CONS: (1) High-frequency support is surprisingly poor - unit produces a steep roll-off of frequencies beyond 10kHz (2) Analog video signal does not pass through HDMI output - not recommended for users making a main wall connection via HDMI (3) Initial setup can be very confusing - general cable routing and TOS cable requirements may be painstaking for inexperienced users (4) Connectivity options are fairly limiting - dedicated "SAT", "DVD" and "VID2" I/O strips are not conducive to console gamers or users running network storage devices (5) Pales in comparison to modern A/V units - 1080i max resolution handling is a hinderance as compared to full 1080p HD units

Too cheap or too stupid?
2 Star Review   By member xandersen - May 3, 2008

Strengths: HDMI 2 1nputs and 1 output, digital optical, price

Weakness: Too many and/or too few features.

I may be me! I can't seem to get the same quality of sound out of it that I did with my old analog Sony receiver. I don't know if it is just I can't seem to understand all the programming stuff (too complicated), or it doesn't have the two features I used most often before (Dance sound field and/or a loudness button).

Bad Engineering. limited functionality. Avoid
1 Star Review   By member 5ive - Feb 18, 2008

Strengths: Makes a satisfying thud when thrown off roof.

Weakness: Flexibility, practicality, honest descriptions

This receiver has two (2) component video in poorts (SAT and DVD) but it only has audio out for one (!) . Insane. It could have 200 component video-out ports but if only one of them is capable of audio then what is the point

great for the price
4 Star Review   By member samraf - Dec 20, 2007

Strengths: hdmi compatibility, great wattage per chanel, good impendance, good compatibility with bose system

Weakness: weak speaker connections

I got this to go with my new BOSE Acoustimass 10 series IV surround system. I have an older SONY receiver (DE-597) which works great, however it lacked of HDMI inputs. I prefer the screw system for the speaker inputs on the back than the "snappy" push system that the DG-510 has. It took me a while to figure out the settings for all surround sound, but it works great now.

Not bad
3 Star Review   By member Procter - Dec 10, 2007

Strengths: A lot of different configuration options. Good price to quality.

Weakness: Lack of microphone inputs. Lack of compatibility for different type of DVD players

We bought this as an amplifier for the party. The price is OK compared to other home theater receivers, however, the setup is plainly painful. This product lacks the basic support for older type of DVD players which does not support optical cable output. And the other downside is lacking of microphone inputs. The other features are nice and easy to use though.

Good Price + Great Receiver
4 Star Review   By member wecotu - Nov 29, 2007

Strengths: HDMI, multi inputs, easy to use.

Weakness: Front panel buttons are kind of small.

I bought this from Amazon for $99. For this price I'd say it's a very good receiver and it's a SONY :). The sound is good and it's very easy to set up. The only thing I don't like is the front panel buttons below LCD are kind of small. Overall it's a great receiver for this price.

Low price, high quality
4 Star Review   By member llamafett - Nov 20, 2007

Strengths: 2 HDMI pass throughs, automatic settings, plenty of power.

Weakness: Only supports four devices.

This is a good value receiver for what is included. This receiver can power my floor-standing speakers and the HDMI inputs let me change audio and visual at the same time on the remote. The auto programming of speaker placements is easy to use. There aren't as many audio digital hookups as I would like. I've used all three for my DVD player, cable DVR and CD changer.

Very Good Product
5 Star Review   By member abakben - Nov 13, 2007

Strengths: Price, quality and hdmi input

Weakness: Remote

I'm very happy with this receiver. Setup was easy and performance has been excellent thus far. This receiver does everything I want. Sound quality is good. All a great price. I definitely recommend this receiver. I think they can improve on the remote but as I use a universal it doesn't matter to me.

Decent receiver
3 Star Review   By member dwyiu - Oct 25, 2007

Strengths: Multiple inputs, Sony name

Weakness: Remote and surround is not that intuitive

I am not an audiophile but as a novice to home theater receivers this Sony STR-DG510 fits the bill. It has multiple inputs and was easy to set up. It's perfect for a small room or bedroom. I would buy again for the price I paid (under $100).

Sony STR-DG510 Receiver
4 Star Review   By member Grubb - Oct 19, 2007

Strengths: Price, number of connections, sound, brand name.

Weakness: Configuration, front panel button options, remote.

Pretty good receiver for the price, does everything very well, very good sound, and of course its a Sony. The surround sound settings were completely foreign to me, different than any other settings I'd seen on other systems. Not bad, just different. Took time to learn. Seem to need the remote for a lot of operations, front panel doesn't necessarily have access to everything. Remote itself has too many buttons, in non-intuitive places, with funky abbreviations. Overall, the receiver does exactly what its supposed to do, with very nice sound output, for a great price. The weaknesses listed have everything to do with functional design, not performance, and are specific to me. You may very well feel otherwise.

great price
4 Star Review   By member nelson714 - Oct 7, 2007

Strengths: price, inputs, ease of use

Weakness: amplifier, sound quality

i buy it from amazon $99, free shipping and no tax. Look, this is a bargain basement product, but it delivers the goods for what you pay for it. I needed something quick and dirty until I can get some bucks together to buy a more robust unit, and overall I am pleased with my purchase. As an audiophile I am disappointed in the sound quality from this unit, but hey, I only paid $199. What do you expect? Compared to the stand alone amp I can no longer use, the sound quality is poor. But there are plenty of inputs and it wasn't hard to hook up all of my components. With 2 HDMI inputs, you can connect an HDMI capable cable box and DVD player. Just be careful if you are using component video that you match the audio and video inputs, or you'll get sound or video but not both! Also, if you are using an HDMI capable cable box this unit will not play the audio to your speakers unless you buy a digital optical cable. But you can get a decent one for $15, so that's no sweat. All in all I'd say this unit is a fantastic deal for the price. Just don't expect the high-quality audio you are going to get from a stand alone amp.

Excellent value
5 Star Review   By member etipi - Sep 19, 2007

Strengths: HDMI, Price. Lot of Inputs

Rock solid Sony receiver. You can see and feel the quality in this unit. Very clean sound. Lots of input options, including optical input. The power output is not enormous, but completely adequate, particularly with quality speakers. I live in a very rural mountainous area with poor FM reception, and I have found radio reception on this unit to be quite good, just using the FM antennae that came with the unit. The full-function remote control is great. I use this system with my computer systems for surround sound games, iTunes, and FM reception. I use the remote to control everything. For the price, I can't imagine a better 5.1 receiver.
