Sony STR-DA7100ES receiver
5 Star Review   By member mmeisler - Apr 21, 2006

Strengths: Very powerful, clean sound. 2 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output. Phono input. Nice remote.

Weakness: None so far

I am very impressed with this receiver. The difference in sound quality from what I was using before is astounding. I am now hearing things in recordings that I never knew existed before. I think for the money, you can't beat all the features and quality of this receiver.

HDMI Upconversion Feature is Laughable
3 Star Review   By member tenly - Oct 16, 2005

Strengths: Fantastic Sound.

Weakness: HDMI UpConversion feature is useless.

This receiver provides excellent sound and power. I've never heard anything better in a Home Theater. However...I could have lived with the sound quality of a receiver costing half of what this one did. I paid the extra money for this receiver primarily for the HDMI upconversion feature. I thought it would be great to only have to run a single cable from the receiver to my High Definition projector. The projector I'm using is the Panasonic AE900 with native 720 line display. I had 'assumed' that I would be able to set the Sony's HDMI output to 720p, 1080i etcetera - so maybe it's my own fault for assuming, but the reality is that the HDMI upconversion feature will only work with a 480i source and it only upconverts to 480p. This means that in order to make use of the single-cable solution, I would have to manually reduce the output resolution of my DVD players/Network Media players and other HD video sources that only have Component Video outputs in order to have them successfully up-converted by the receiver. I tried feeding the receiver a 720p signal, but the manual is right. It doesn't get up-converted or passed through as-is. I read the spec sheets prior to my purchase but there was no mention of the limitations of the up-conversion process. As a result, I'm back to running multiple cables to my projector - 1 for HDMI, 1 for Composite, 1 for D4, etc... I'm very disappointed that I spent a lot of extra money on a feature that is useless.
