Pioneer VSX-517K AV Receiver
4 Star Review  audioholics.com - Dec 29, 2007

Let me guess, you've got a buddy that got some new A/V component for Christmas and now he's looking for a great A/V receiver that can handle high definition video but does not cost too much. The bad news is that this situation always involves making compromises. The good news is there are receivers like the Pioneer VSX-517 out there that offer a great list of features for very little money.

Pioneer VSX-517
3.5 Star Review  productwiki.com - Oct 6, 2011

The Pioneer VSX-517 is a 5.1 channel x 110 watts that comes with pretty advanced features for its price ($200) and the date of its release (2007). It has a powerful 110 watts per channel, and a host of audio digital decoders such as Dolby® Digital EX, DTS-ES®, Dolby Pro-Logic IIx, and DTS 96/24 decoders. It also features a new FreescaleTM 180 MIP Digital Signal Processor DSP. It also comes packed with some interesting exclusive technologies to Pioneer such as Phase Control for bass management, Hybrid Amplifier Design II, and Front Stage Surround Advance, allowing users to place their surround speakers in the front of the room if they dont want to run the wiring at the back of the room and still want to make the most out of the 5.1 sound experience. Features Power Amplifier Design: Hybrid II Surround Power: 110 x 5 Channels: 5 THD THD: 1kHz w/1% THD @ 8 ohm Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Pro-Logic ... PROS: (1) plenty of connections for the average household (2) very low price for a receiver, accessible for entry-level users (3) great sound for movies and TV shows, makes dialog clear and detailed (4) speaker setup is quite easy, instructions are fairly clear (5) enough power output for any sized room in the home ... CONS: (1) remote is a little complicated, takes some time to get used to it (2) FM station setup takes some time to figure out, unusually complicated

Lots of features for an entry level audio/video receiver
4 Star Review   By member amiga - May 1, 2008

Strengths: Choice of quick setup feature to set up speakers in a few minutes or manual setup for optimal audio performance, banana plug hookup for all speakers, lots of audio selections, plenty of power

Weakness: Only one optical input, remote on the small side

If anyone is looking for an entry level audio/video receiver with lots of features for less than $200 that is easy to setup than I highly recommend the Pioneer VSX-517. You won't go wrong.

Pioneer VSX-517-K A/V Home Theater Receiver
4 Star Review   By member Hendoshmoke - Nov 20, 2007

Strengths: An excellent receiver with very good functions. Nice layout on a compact remote, DTS setting sounds awesome! Probably one of the best values in the sub $200 price range.

Weakness: No HDMI, but can you really expect that at this price?! Nothing else worth mentioning thus far.

An excellent receiver from a very reputable company - Pioneer. The VSX-517-K is surely not a high end receiver with all the bells and whistles by any means. Even though this unit will not be on any audiophiles' top 10 list for best receivers, it will do the job for most, and do it quite well. Even though it's quite basic, it does feature several different modes to play around with and I was extremely impressed with the unit's DTS quality. Since my expectations were not very high from a sub $200 receiver, the VSX-517-K is definitely a great value and has exceeded all my expectations in every way possible.

Pioneer entry level
4 Star Review   By member egeek - Nov 19, 2007

Strengths: inexpensive, brand name

Weakness: no HDMI, only one optical in

For an entry level 5.1 theater sound you can't beat the price. Often discounted at BB stores. This will allow you to take advantage of Dolby Digital on HD or BlueRay formats. Pioneer has a sound reputation for low end receivers. Easy setup. Will drive mid rangers speakers.
