Onkyo TX-SR604 (black)
3.5 Star Review  cnet.com - Jan 26, 2007

THE GOOD: 7.1-channel A/V receiver with HDMI switching for two HDMI sources; Audyssey 2EQ automatic calibration is the most advanced autosetup ever offered by Onkyo; XM Satellite Radio-Ready with XM Neural Surround; optional iPod dock. THE BAD: Wont convert analog video signals to HDMI; no onscreen menus via HDMI; only two HDMI inputs; no phono input. THE BOTTOM LINE: The affordable Onkyo TX-SR604 offers solid sound and an advanced autosetup system, but youll need to opt for the step-up model if you want more robust HDMI features.

Wonderful piece of technology
4 Star Review   By member Fry-kun - Apr 26, 2007

Strengths: Great sound quality, plenty of inputs, upconverts video to component, HDMI switching, audio outputs, support for second set of speakers.

Weakness: Heats up, which is a downside if you like to stack your A/V system. No upconversion to HDMI, but that's not a weakness IMHO. Zone2 only supports 2 speakers.

This is a great receiver. The extra features blew me away when I checked the spec (I didn't expect it to have these features for the price). First, I wanted to be able to use all my devices without switching the TV input channel - this receiver upconverts everything to component video, so that's the only cable I have connected to the TV. Most cheaper receivers only have pass-through video. Next, my setup is located in the living room and part of my requirements was that I need to be able to listen using my wireless headphones when people might be sleeping. As far as the heat - it's kind of annoying but manageable. It doesn't ruin movie watching experience and the like :) As for no upconversion to HDMI: I don't think of it as a bad thing - the only good reason to use HDMI is the high resolution. In my opinion, there isn't much point upconverting low quality signal to HD, because you never really get any higher quality than you already have. Onkyo has another model (~$100 higher than this one) if you absolutely must have HDMI upconversion. Zone2 is a separate output channel to 2.0 (simple stereo) speakers for another room. Zone2 is a separate channel from the main speakers, which means that for instance, you can watch a movie in the living room and listen to the radio in the kitchen at the same time. VERY NICE :)

TX-SR604B Receiver
4 Star Review   By member grussock - Mar 21, 2007

Strengths: Sounds great with 7.1-channels; HDMI switching between two HDMI sources; automatic calibration of speaker system; XM satellite ready.

Weakness: Doesn't convert analog signals to HDMI and you have to connect to your TV with component, composite or s-video cable to see the setup menu. No phono input. No wireless rear speaker system.

The Onkyo TX-SR604 offers good value for money. It has very good sound with excellent features including advanced setup. A phono input, setup via HDMI and provision for wireless rear speakers would put this AV Receiver up there with the best of them.
