solid performer
4 Star Review   By member hedson - May 15, 2007

Strengths: very good resolution, deep base

Weakness: colored sound signiture

have this sennheiser for half year, they sound great, very detailed, high resolution. mid range is not as sweet as the hd600(which I preferred over the hd650), but it has a deeper base than the 600 and the level of details is excellent. very comfortable pair. However, they are not as nutrual as the hd600, which is a bit surprising as it has gone off track of sennheiser's traditional sound signiture. Some might say they are more 'musical', but to me I'd rather they kept being nutural, simply because they are carrying the sennheiser tag.

Sennheiser HD-650
5 Star Review   By member brianadams - Dec 7, 2006

Strengths: Unbelievable clarity, very transparent, flat frequency response, very musical and detailed.

Weakness: Almost too transparent to source, AC power, and wiring. Absolutely requires a good headphone amp.

The HD-650's are incredible headphones. They are entirely musical, and that is the very best compliment I can give them. I can wear them for hours, and they are physically comfortable, as well as easy on the ears musically. They are very detailed, but not in an obvious, contrived way. The 650's are full-range and beyond, and with the right equipment, they do not overly-stress any part of the frequency range. They can be so transparent, though, that they will show the weaknesses in your system, wherever that may be. You will want to use (and they deserve it) your very best equipment. These are not MP3 headphones! Also, they need a good headphone amp to show what they are capable of sounding like. I get wonderful results from my Class A tube amp. Regardless of the price, these headphones are the real deal, and they are worth every penny!

great sound-tight fit
4 Star Review   By member mochimon - Nov 30, 2006

Strengths: sound qualitly, build quality, sennheiser customer service

Weakness: way too tight on the head

dont listen to anyone telling you you can get by without a headphone amp for these things. you HAVE TO HAVE IT. they will sound like 50 dollar Sony's from bestbuy otherwise. WITH an amp these things are pretty amazing in terms of sound quality. rumbling lows, rich mids, and fast and punchy highs. they do wonders for classical music- my Schubert hating friends who have listened to classical on these have actually sat and enjoyed entire symphonies, eyes closed and mouths smiling. The build qualitly of these headphones is very nice. they are sturdy, pleasing to the eye, and can take alot of wear and tear. a subjective minus is that, instead of being bare aluminum, the headband is painted- this means that it IS possible to chip the paint, and really deap scratches will show up a bit more easily - however the paint does look good. Also keep in mind that Sennheiser has very very good customer service and that because these are the most popular audiophile headphones out there, there is a more robust community to offer upgrades and DIY projects specifially for these headphones. the only REAL complaint i have, and it is a big one, is that these things are really tight. i may have a gloriously large head, and i also may not have worn them long enough for them to stretch out, but after say 20 minutes of listening it feels really good to take them off. emmediately upon putting them on i can feel the emense pressure they place on my skull- i can feel a warm sensation in my ears as blood is forced into them. it has actually hurt to wear them somtimes. and you can't just loosen the head band either, they slip off if the band is not resting on the top of your head. this is why i can't give them a perfect score. though i havent actually used a pair, i would probably suggest the slightly scarcer (and thusly more expensive) AKG K701's as an alternative. they are well known for they sound quality and their COMFORT.

5 Star Review

Strengths: Full, detailed sound. Very comfortable to wear, even for long periods of time.

Weakness: Harder to drive than most headphones. Requires a good headphone amplifier.

If you have the setup to support them, the HD650's are spectacular. They need, and really deserve, good front end components and a good headphone amplifier to truly show what they are capable of sounding like. These are not headphones for your MP3 player, and don't try to match them with it. These are, by a wide margin, the best headphones I own.

Best I have so far
5 Star Review   By member beethozart - Mar 8, 2006

Strengths: Excellent sound stage

Weakness: Need a great source and amp to compliment it

I'm so impressed! Everything seems so smooth, balanced, and so easy to listen to, what a pleasure, once again I've found musical happiness. I typically like to listen to music in the upper dB range, with my other phones, the shrillness of the high mid, and upper frequencies would cause me to turn the volume down. Not with these, it's the best I've ever heard. And, the smooth tight bass is awesome! I must say at about the 100 hour mark the HD650's are getting very transparent. And bass is getting even deeper and tighter. I think the treble has opened up a good bit but there's no sense of a disjointed treble or any kind of brightness at all. There is no doubt I love these cans.

Sennheiser HD650 headphones
5 Star Review   By member mshan242700 - Feb 27, 2006

Strengths: exquisitely smooth, highly resolved sound

Weakness: requires a dedicated headphone amp

These Sennheiser HD650 headphones are exquitely smooth and highly resolved headphones that I think I will own for quite a long time. Some people may find them slightly dark and distant, but that may also depend on associated equipment and type of music listened too (e.g. may not be best for in your face rock).

The Best!
5 Star Review   By member kevinsmithandsunset - Dec 16, 2005

Strengths: Well made

Weakness: Expensive

Well, these have to be the best headphones in the world, IMHO. They're pricey, but if you need the best set of "cans" money can buy (almost) these are it. I think AKG makes a thousand dollar pair of headphones.

HD650 are a dream
5 Star Review

Strengths: Great sound quality. Open design.

Weakness: Stock cable is nice and flexible, but sound quality is limited. The Cardas cable upgrade smokes the stock cables! Why sell HD650s with a less than premium cable?

Amazing sound quality, balanced, clear, accurate, open. I especially like open cans, less fatiguing to the ears. Bass is not hyped, highs are not hyped, midrange is open sounding. These are the best headphones I have heard. You need a good quiet room because the HD650s will present every small nuance: room transients, reverbs, echos. Use a good headphone amp, use DVD player or CD player with good D/A converters, use the Cardas cable upgrade. You will listen in amazement.

Best cans
5 Star Review   By member Ranyuncho - Jun 18, 2005

Strengths: bass treble and everything in between, very comfortable

Im currently using these connected to a mg head mark 3 tube headphone amp ($395) connected to my computer and it sounds wonderful i think it sounds better than a very good loudspeaker setup you probably would need to spend $15,000+ to get sound even close to this good from loudspeakers i will stick with these headphones because 1)they sound great 2)they dont bother people as much as loudspeakers 3)they are way cheaper than a comparable pair of loudspeakers 4)they sound great. these are probably one of the top 3 best headphones in the world and the price is very reasonable compared to similar offerings from grado sony akg etc. these are definately a best buy makes me feel like a fool that i once paid $4000 for a pair of loudspeakers if you intend to buy these shop around (using pricegrabber of course) prices vary widely.

5 Star Review   By member lovedugod - Dec 14, 2004

Strengths: Excellent sound quality

Weakness: A little bit uncomfortable to wear for long time.

After burn-in period, it would show a remarkable sound quality. Also, for better sound, many people recommend using with a headphone amplifier. Anyway, HD650 is one of the best high-end headphones.
