Unreliable, Cheaply made
1 Star Review   By member tswett - Mar 17, 2010

Strengths: Low cost for noise cancelling headphones.

Weakness: Breaks very quickly, poor sound quality.

1: Noise Cancelling 2/5 The noise cancelling was fairly decent, however after the first hour of use they started to make an annoying humming sound. 2: Sound Quality 1/5 The sound quality was okay, however the headphones given out for free on Continental Airlines during some longer flights sound about as good and have lasted for much longer. 3: Reliability/Quality 0/5 These headphones lasted two months before the right side speaker stopped working altogether. I dismantled the headphones using a small screw driver and found that after only two months of light use the wires had stripped inside, so I applied some electrical tape to about every wire that had been torn, to no avail. Also, the wire near the noise cancellation on off switch came loose, due to the heaviness of the switch. 4: Functionality 3/5 This is the one area where maxell did a fairly decent job,as the way the headphones fold up is nice for traveling and the included case makes them easy to take with you on the go. However, the swivel functionality cause the wiring inside to strip. The headphones are comfortable, and the leather padded top is a nice feature, altough they feel a bit heavy after long flights.

The best
5 Star Review   By Kris on Provantage (Channel Engine) - Sep 7, 2008

Strengths: comfortable, cancels out noise and great sound

I bought mine about 3-4 years ago. I have been happy ever since. They are super comfy, I wear it for long flights, cancel out the annoying people on planes. They are so great my husband wants a pair of his own.

Better Than Bose!
4 Star Review   By member smithlhkw2 - Feb 15, 2007

Strengths: Comfortable Full Ear Cups, Great Sond Deadening

Weakness: Very long cord

We just returned from California on a Red-Eye flight to Ft. Lauderdale. The plane was just about full and included lots of children and two dogs in carry-on cages. One of the little yappers was right in front of me and one of the dogs was in my row. We had stayed with my son in CA, who owns the newest Generation Of Bose Noise Cancelling Headsets. We wanted to purchase two sets..and two Bose were just beyond our (retired persons) budget. So we bought two sets of The Maxell Noise Cancelling Headsets w/ Full Ear Cups at a nearby discount store. My husband, who is an Electrical Engineer and VERY picky, decided to do a test: He tried both Bose and Maxell hooked to our MP3 player, in our noisy rental car (in neutral and revving engine), with grandchildren yelling. His final assessment was that the Bose had marginally better sound quality, but the Maxell had quite acceptable sound quality and BETTER sound deadening. We used the headsets on the 4-hour flight home and were VERY pleased with both sound quality from the airline jack hookup and THRILLED with noise cancellation feature. In addition, the comfort of the full ear cup headset was excellent. After four hours, my ears did not feel "mashed" or tender. So, must say that we highly recommend them for anyone who does not want to pay the extra $$$ for Bose.

Excellent Noise Cancelling Cans
4 Star Review   By member J3di_AlucarD - Jul 26, 2006

Strengths: These headphones sound amazing! They do exactly what I bought them for. They provided complete isolation on a 9 hour flight to Europe. They are relatively durable, and offer decent build quality.

Weakness: A little bass heavy (muddy), and the noise switch in the middle of the cord tends to deteriorate on either side after continued use. Definitely not meant as a gaming headphone, or for monitoring.

Overall, I have been very pleased with these headphones, but with a pair of Sennheiser HD280's on the way, these are about to hit the shelf. As an avid gamer, n00b audiophile, and DVD watcher, these have performed beautifully for the price. But I think I will save them for the long flights, and boring car rides, where the noise cancelling technology is the key. I would highly recommend these headphones for those who travel a LOT, they are so much cheaper than bose cans.

Gone through 2 pairs
3 Star Review   By Nc-II user on Provantage (Channel Engine) - Jul 15, 2006

Strengths: very good noise canceling and sound quality

Weakness: the wires on each side of the noise canceling device always become bare and cut in half. Has happened twice to me.

I have used these headphones for two years. Even though they break I keep returning to them because of their good quality. So if you buy them be extra careful with the cable and maybe even tape them.

Were good will they lasted
3 Star Review   By member jmalciv - Jun 29, 2006

Strengths: Good sound quality, solid noise cancellation, good for travel

Weakness: If you are going to use them regularly for travel and work and fold them up frequently, the wires that connect the ear pieces will fray and break...it is nearly impossible to reconnect.

Not bad for the 2 years of use, but I will have to move to a higher quality set now. For frequent users that will be folding them up daily, you will get a couple years out of them...

very happy with these headphones
4 Star Review   By member Enthu Shopper - Jun 23, 2006

Strengths: closed ear design, noise cancelling feature works pretty well, comfort, price

Weakness: volume control not available

i've used these for couple of weeks by now. These are comfortable to wear though i never tried those beyond an hour. noise cancelling feature works well for me. I've never compared it to the high end noise cancelling headphones. my purpose is to use it with my pc mainly to reduce noise from surrounding people at work and it does that job pretty well.

Not worth the low price
1 Star Review   By member Xendarq - Jun 6, 2006

Strengths: Cheap

Weakness: Low volume, poor wiring will break within 3 months

I used these headphones for about 2 months. The volume was always very low, plus the noise cancelling feature receives interference from Blackberry's and other devices. I say "used" because the wiring around the fold up earpiece stripped due to normal use after only these 2 months! There is now no volume in the right earpiece. I would strongly discourage anyone from wasting their money on this - get a more expensive / better built one and it will probably serve you better.

Good Headphones for the Money
4 Star Review   By member robroye - Apr 9, 2006

Strengths: They block the white noise with no problem. Compact for travel.

Weakness: None to date.

So far, I can recommend these for for air travel. These noise-canceling headphones are much better than regular headphones for the same price. Don't forget to turn the power off, or the batteries will go dead quickly.

Maxell noise cancelling headphones
4 Star Review   By member dchambers - Mar 23, 2006

This unit works well. I've used it on an airplane and it cuts down the engine noise while allowing you to listen to a CD or the airline's built-in music/movie audio.

Maxell NC II Noice Cancellation Headphone
2 Star Review   By member vedau - Feb 21, 2006

Strengths: competitively priced, comfortable ears fitting

Weakness: unbalanced left vs right sound level

I bought this headphone when it was on sale. Noise cancellation works fair. It does remove most background noise. The weakness on this unit is that the left and right sound levels are not balanced. The left side sounds significantly louder than the right side regardless of noise cancellation being on or not. For those in doubt or are not sound sensitive, turn your volume to a low level and you will notice that you could hear sound from the left but very little from the right. Keep decreasing the volume, you'll eventually reach the point where you can hear from the left but the right is barely audible, if at all. My theory is that the cable goes into the left side and then ONLY the wiring for the right channel goes to the right side. Perhaps that is the source of the balancing problem. I hope Maxell is reading this and fixes the flaw.

good noice cancellation headphone
5 Star Review   By member lijipeso1 - Feb 1, 2006

Strengths: inexpensive, good sound quality.

Weakness: short cord, big size.

I had the headphone for more than two months now. I like it very much. It is very helpful when I travel by air. Its sound quality is good and it is very comfortable to wear. The price is relatively cheaper than other named brand cancellation phones. It size is a little bit large and the cord is a little bit short.

Nice Headphones
5 Star Review   By member cole6260_1102917182 - Jan 5, 2006

Strengths: Great sound, compact, good for travel

Weakness: Quality of material

These are excellent headphones. They deliver amazing sound quality weather the noise canceling is turned on or off. The light-weight headphones fit comfortably over your ears while the noise canceling switch is located half way down the cord. The only thing that i didn't like about them was the appearance. At first glance they look to be made out of cheap plastic. Other than that these headphones are great.

Good quality, very economical headphones
4 Star Review   By member natewag - Jan 5, 2006

Strengths: Collapsible, so easier for travel. Includes adapter for airplanes that require dual prong for stereo.

Weakness: No "in line" volume control.

I'm very pleased with these noise-canceling headphones. Everything is included for travel (single or dual prong, travel bag), and its collapsible feature also makes it more convenient. The padding helps reduce ambient noise even with noise-cancelling turned off. They are also comfortable to wear. Good quality at a very reasonable price.

useable headphones, not the best but it does its job
3 Star Review   By member anloantle - Dec 30, 2005

Strengths: cancels some noise, useable, good sound

Weakness: flimsy plastic, not the best sounding but can't complain since its price is very low ($10 after rebates), the control for on and off makes it look cheap

good pair of headphones, long cord (thats good for some not for others), overall a good product. the ear cover lets some noise sneak through not a perfect fit. Plastic seems kinda flimsy but it is not bad since it is foldable and that seems to keep its structure pretty strong

great head phones for the price
4 Star Review

Strengths: great quality sound, can use without noise cancelling features (which requires batteries), comes in a pouch that is convenient, and the headphones can be folded so they take up less room.

Weakness: noise cancelling option requires batteries that is good when you are on an airplane, plastic (sometimes I feel like I might break it)

I have been using these headphones while I have been travellling for the past month, these headphones are great the quality is good and the built although seems weak because it is plastic but I have been backpacking and I leave it in my backpack for a few weeks and it is still perfect (I the foldable feature makes it strong)

4 Star Review   By member cxw360 - Dec 15, 2005

Strengths: good product for the price

Weakness: no volum control

I like the headphone very much, very comfortable around the ear. It needs two AAA battery to work so the the battery department is kind of big. But my complain is no volume control with it.

Maxell Noise Cancellation Headphone Review
2 Star Review   By member mohantys - Dec 14, 2005

Strengths: Inexpensive, carry case, dual prong adapter

Weakness: Flimsy make, only cancels certain noise

The headphone was attractive since it provided an important feature (noise cancellation) in an inexpensive package. However, I found it to be very flimsy. It got scratched when I was removing it from the package. It only cancels certain types of noise (engine noise). It does not cancel regular noises like someone talking, etc.

Does the job!
4 Star Review   By member pgc123 - Dec 8, 2005

Strengths: Inexpensive, easy to carry, light, correct size , good battery life

Weakness: Doesn't eliminate 100% of the noise

Bought this one for $25. A very good deal for this headphone. Does a good job of noise cancellation but not 100% elimination, especially if you have some old tapes converted to MP3's even with DOLBY B/C NR. Takes 2 AAA batteries which have lasted ok until now. Over all good buy for the price.

Good Value
3 Star Review   By member Tam1957 - Dec 6, 2005

Strengths: For the price they do a pretty fair job at blocking unwanted noise.

Weakness: Large compared to regular listening headphones.

I picked these up for very little considering sale price and rebate. For the money it was a good purchase. The headphones do what they claim and are a bit awkward to wear as I am used to small listening only headphones. I anticipate they will do fine on my flight to Colorado; no more droning engine noise (I hope).

Good Product!!
4 Star Review   By member nagavenkata - Nov 27, 2005

Strengths: Comes with 2 adapters, one for flights and one for regular connections. Collapses well into the little carrying case making it easy to carry

These headphones are great. They really knock out the sound of the engines when on flight and fold up into the little carrying case. The advantage is that they come with 2 sets of adapters, one for flights and one for regular connections. The music and radio sounds are also good. You get what you pay for in this headphone. It's good choice if one is looking for a low cost and reasonable headphones.

Quality Features for Budget-Minded
4 Star Review   By member Twordsdiverged - Nov 26, 2005

Strengths: Single Cord Good Battery Life Cost/Benefit ratio good

Weakness: Not Bose quality

For a decent price these headphones do a decent job. I have a pair of cheap kensington noise cancel headphones and these do a better job. Compared to the other headphones these will completely cover your ears comfortably. They also seem to reduce or cancel noise when turned on compared to the Kensington headphones that seem mostly to just increase in volume. You are not getting a pair of $80-$300 headphones but you aren't paying for them either.

Strengths: Very good noice cancellation. Dual prong in-flight adapter plug and drawstring travel bag included are very nice.

Weakness: It's a little too big. The cord is a little short.

I bought it because of a thanksgiving sale. Great purchase with the price $15. I think the microphone inside the headphone should have better feedback to make it work fine. I like it!

great quality for the money
5 Star Review   By member anxietykl - Nov 25, 2005

Strengths: good at reducing noise, decent quality, pouch and airplane plug included

Weakness: not as great as higher end headset but for the price you cant go wrong. uses triple A battery only 50 hours.

I think this is a great sounding headset, blocks out a lot the outside noise. i feel like i am in a room alone listening to my music when i am in a room of people talking. the plastic cosmetic doesn't feel fancy but hey i didn't pay much for this. uses aaa batteries to cancel noise, you can still use it without battery but need to turn it on if you want to drown out noise

Weakness: bulky

noise cancelling ability. low hissing noise. confortable to wear. Great purchase for the price. Only down side is its size. Might be too big for some people. I would recommend this product for anyone for less than $40

Pretty good for the price
3 Star Review   By member gifs71 - Nov 21, 2005

Strengths: Good noice cancellation. This is my first pair of such headphones and I like it.

Weakness: Could have been made to fit better around the ears.

My co-worker/friend is sort of an expert in all such audio/video tech stuff and he suggested that I should get this one for every day use if I didn't want to go for some very fancy one. He already has a Bose and he found this one good for the price. So can't complain.

Maxell Noise Cancelling Headphone HP/NC-II for $15/- at Ride aid so hurry....... till November 26, 2005
3 Star Review   By member shankar_roy - Nov 21, 2005

Strengths: Really cheap. Works as advertised. Unlike bose one if your battery is dead you can still use the head phone where as in the other case it becomes useless.

Weakness: Ear cups not so comfortable. No audio gain amplifier. Not very ergonomic design (little bulky). The cord seems to be too thick.

Got it from RiteAid for $14.99/- after $10/- mail in rebate. I own a Bose noise cancelling quite comfort 2 . After buying this I understood why bose costs $300/-. This maxell headphone has a great price to performance ratio but if you are looking for a great pair of headphones which you will use for a long period of time (which I do everyday) every day this may not be the best ones to own. This would be great for occational use in the airplane or at home, at night so that your spouse can sleep.

Bad Maxell, Bad
1 Star Review

Strengths: It fits my big head.

Weakness: It doesn't work. The noise cancellation doesn't work at all.

This is the worst pair of headphones I've ever used. The noise cancellation doesn't work at all, with or without being plugged into a stereo. With "noise cancellation" on I could hear everything outside. It doesn't cancel anything. In fact, when I turned on the noise cancellation, I got lots of static and noise.

NC II Noise Cancellation Headphones
3 Star Review   By member SurfnGo - Aug 25, 2005

Strengths: Compact. Decent battery life.

Weakness: Seems to make some noise more apparent when noise cancellation is turned off. Could fit a little more snug.

This headphone isn't bad for the price. I'll need to try others to really get a better comparison. Warranty longer than 90 days would make feel a little better about product quality.

Great Value
4 Star Review   By member pglenn - Jul 28, 2005

Strengths: Great Bass, noise cancelling

Weakness: Longer cord would be nice. Noise cancellation switch would be more convenient if it were on the headphone and not "in-line"

I work in a computer environment. I currently have 8 computer at my desk and the noise reduction on these headphones have stopped the constant hum that is around me. The sound is good for the price. I was surprised by the bass level. I've acutally had to adjust my EQ so the bass doesn't overpower me.

Strengths: great bass, good noise reduction

Weakness: headphone jack needs to be positioned properly to avoid loss of sound in ear

Overall, you can't beat a noise cancellation headset for 30 bucks. My friend recommended this headset to me, and I am excited to pay 1/10 the price of the Bose set.
