Grado SR80i
3 Star Review  productwiki.com - Jul 17, 2009

Re-introduced in March 2009 with a slightly tweaked and improved driver, the classic looking Grado SR80i is critically acclaimed as one of the best values in headphones today. Built on the same features as the SR60i, but utilizes a 4 conductor connecting cable and larger ear cushions, the SR80i provides an improved bass resonance, which enhances the overall detail, and a wider soundstage. John Grado says he strove for the best sounding phones for the money, and with the glowing reviews the SR80s have received, who can argue. Vented diaphragm Non Resonant air chamber Standard copper voice coil wire Standard copper connecting cord mini plug with 1/4" adaptor Tranducer type : dynamic Operating principle : open air Frequency response : 20-20 SPL 1mV : 98 Normal impedance : 32ohms Driver matched db : .1 ... PROS: (1) best sound for your buck (2) open design lets your ears breath, not as stuffy as closed headphones (3) lightweight (4) very fun sound signature - clear highs, powerful bass and lively midrange (5) classic Grado aesthetic ... CONS: (1) can be sibilant - especially if driven poorly, by a bad source, or too loudly (2) poor for use on the go - thick cable, open design and the fact that you cant throw it in your bag (3) potential comfort issues (4) not the best quality build (5) will have you upgrading in no time

Strengths: Fantastic sound quality sound they must be the best speakers I own and that's including the $300 car stereo speakers. Plus there's no pain in your ears/neck/ whathaveyou from wearing them.

Weakness: It's probably just idiot me, but the wire get twisted quick if your not careful. Also the DO make flaws in the recordings pretty apparent.

I took my time in reviewing these before I bought 'em; and I've owned them for over 2 years now. They're by far the best speakers I've experienced.

Grado SR-80
5 Star Review   By member jj69 - Mar 30, 2006

Strengths: Very good sound quality; good build quality; significant bass response; resonable price

Weakness: Can be physically uncomfortable to wear for some people unless properly adjusted

Very good headphones by a legendary American manufacturer at a very good price. I've had these since 1994, and Grado hasn't revised or upgraded this model since. Why? Because if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Very detailed sound for the price, with excellent bass performance. To some, the highs may seem a bit rolled off at first, but only in comparison to harsh, overly bright, low quality competing models. The sound quality also improves significantly after after extended break-in. The only caveat with Grado headphones is that they can be physically uncomfortable for some people to wear unless the headband is perfectly adjusted. The headband is made from a stiff but pliable metal that can be bent back and forth to acommodate the shape of the wearer's head. A new owner must spend some time adjusting the headband in order to achieve a comfortable fit. Those who don't have the patience to make these adjustments (or a local dealer who has the time to adjust them for you), should consider another brand. Overall, highly recommended.

Awesome Headphones
5 Star Review   By member bama625 - Jan 11, 2006

Strengths: This set of headphones simply blew me away when I first opened the box and listened to them. Great Bass responce, and very crisp highs, you`ll be very surprised, sounds better than most sound systems.

Very comfortable, very reasonably priced, a set of headphones you`ll always cherish. Consruction is very durable and are very comfortable to wear, even hours at a time.I`ve already recommended these to several of my friends.

Great Quality on a Modest Budget
5 Star Review   By member Draccius - Jul 7, 2005

Strengths: These headphones sound simply amazing! I cannot believe the clairity of music, movies, games, etc. Great bass response, too.

Weakness: Cord is a little short when plugging in to the back of a PC tower. Not very comfortable in the beginning, but you get used to them.

I cannot believe how good these headphones are. I am an avid PC Gamer and I have always been plagued with people complaining about volume, but no more! I actually prefer the headphones over my speakers now. I originally read a glowing review of the product in PC Gamer and that practically sold me. I do not regret my purchase at all!

5 Star Review   By member imthekeymaster - May 12, 2005

Strengths: Incredibly clear and detailed with very full bass

Weakness: Honestly the only downside to these headphones that I can think of is that it smelled funny when it came out of the box. The smell went away in a few days.

I'm no audiophile, that's for sure, but I have owned what your average Joe would consider "good" (my old best set being the $50 Sony MDR-G82) and these headphones absolutely annihilate those. These headphones sound so rich and detailed and make everything sound just... bigger and more alive. I'm hearing things I've never heard before in my album collection and never in such detail that it's making me re-listen to every album that I own. Everything sounds almost new again. Anyways, to make a long story short, these headphones will breathe new life into your music collection and make future acquisitions a dream to listen to. Get these cans!

5 Star Review   By member bazzeli_boy - Mar 31, 2005

Strengths: GREAT SOUND. Good bass. Cord is long enough, but not too long for me. Very comfortable, with plenty of adjustments, even for a small head like mine.

Weakness: Proves to you why you shouldn't have gotten that crappy stereo, and why you need a soundcard for your laptop...

Had researched for a good pair of headphones for a while and learned about Grado Labs. Read reviews that were very good, but didn't have the money at first. So I struggled through using my RadioShack (Oh yes, that bad) and then sorta went up to (birthday sympathy from a friend) a pair of Sony's... Well, needless to say, I finally got enough money to buy some Grado's. By then I found out that a friend had SR60's and every minute I was there they were on my ears, absolutely loved them. However, I heard that the SR80's had a bit more bass, and I like bass in the music I listen to. So, I bought a pair from AudioAdvisor (through Amazon however) and it was to OH in 2 days via FedEx ground... Soon as I got em (luckily right before I left for a two-day vacation) I set em up to my stereo with a mix cd of all the music I listen to and set it repeat and let em break in while I was gone. Now that I'm back, they sound amazing for what I listen to usually (rock), but even listening to jazz and classical it sounds great. I also use headphones for gaming (people around me don't like blasting gunshots and explosions :) and it's very helpful to be able to hear where things are coming from... All in all three thumbs up for Grado Labs.

4 Star Review   By member SwapChhabr - Oct 10, 2004

Strengths: Great sound for the price. Good balance of highs, lows and the mid-range.

Weakness: A tad-bit low bass.

These are really great sounding headphones - I have tried headphones from several manufs - Sony, Panasonic, JVC, Aiwa and Sennheiser in the sub $100 category and have never experienced the kind of clarity you get with the SR80s so much so that after buying these I have had to revisit my entire music collection of over 15 gigs! There is a flip-side though - any mp3 file encoded below 128kbps sounds like trash.

5 Star Review   By member Tenchi4U - Sep 21, 2004

Strengths: Outstanding sound quality, better than some high-end home systems, best sounding cans for under $100 (for under $300 at that); anything that comes close will cost 3 times as much (or more)

Weakness: 40 hour break-in period, hard to find at local stores (usually have to order online); reveals shortcomings in poor recordings and cheap equipment

After my Panasonics gave up the ghost (and my neighbors complained about my 4.2 Klipsch setup), I was on the a mission to buy some "real" headphones for a change (tired of $40 cheapies). After much research and much comparison, finally decided on the SR80s, best $100 I ever spent. I play ALOT of PC games (FarCry, CoD, UT2004, etc), and the sound is like being in the game, helps so much at LAN parties. I've read about comfort problems, but those are easily remedied (although mine fit fine due to my large melon). Made my friend cry when he heard these and blew his $200 Sennheisers AWAY, no comparison, just make sure to break these in properly. I've never heard the SR60s or the SR125s, but I've heard plenty of Sonys, Sennheisers, BeyerDynamics, and KOSS, and the SR80s easily put them to shame (especially factoring in price).

5 Star Review   By member Hubris471 - Sep 4, 2004

Strengths: Sound Great. Simple effective construction.

Weakness: Hard to find for less than list price.

These are the best headphones that I've owned and one of the best that I've heard. It may be impossible to find a better pair of 'phones at this price. The clarity of reproduction and the tone are superb. Instruments are rendered with great detail while the extremes of bass and treble are clean. The bottom end is tight and not muddy. Looking closely at the construction, you can see that they aren't fancy or made of super expensive materials. Still, they look like they'll last a while. Comfort is good without being perfect. The foam earpieces are replaceable which is handy if you're jumping around and sweating while your jammin'. I recommend trying a pair.
