TomTom 910
5 Star Review

Strengths: Overall usage is easy.

Weakness: You can not change the maps until you get to your destination in Europe.

I traveled throughout Italy with this unit. Eight days in Sicily, three days on the Amalfe Coast, three days in Sorento and the drive to Rome. Outstanding performance. All the maps were included in this unit. Easy re-charging with the cigarette lighter or on the computer with an USB cable.

CELL PHONE
4 Star Review   By member Philadelman76 - Nov 30, 2007

Strengths: EASY SET UP AND USE

Weakness: CELL PHONE Tethering ... Turn by Turn Lag

DO your research...Traffic Reports and Communication Features only work with cell phones listed on Tom Tom's Web Site.Turn by Turn takes some getting use to. There is a slight Lag on when to turn on when confusing road conditions exist. YOU STILL NEED TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE ROAD AND ROAD SIGNS. Do not think this TOM TOM is the WINDSHIELD or you may MISS your TURN...

Love and hate
2 Star Review

Strengths: Routings, visual and audio instructions are outstanding - ways better than Garmin.

Weakness: Bulky, the search systems are lousy if not useless.

I used it on my recent vacation trip in many citites in France, never lost once. Once the unit found the satellite signals, and accepted an address it would calculate the routes and ready to go in no time. All driving instructions on turns were extremely clear and in time. If a turn were missed, the unit almost instantly recalcutaled and adjusted the routes. While driving, it also displayed the highway limits, and gave warning of radar speed detector if detected. The details of the visual map including the turns, the audio quality and the audio instructions are way better than Garmin Nuvi (which is my favorite because its portablity, its entry system, its search system and its good signal reception) Besides the above, everything else is suck! The unit is bulky and heavy, ready to fall off from the mouting if not leaning on the dashboard surface. What I hate the most about the unit is its lousy menu - it is a joke compared with other GPS. Especially the search system is completely useless. There were times that I almost threw it away after unsuccessfully trying to find a point-of-interest! In short, I love the visual and audio instructions of this unit, but hate using it to find a destination.

Strengths: Locks onto satellites within minutes out of the box.Text to speech works very well.Customer support is terrific. No problems.Very user friendly and maps ourt routes very quickly.

Weakness: It sometimes frees up,but a soft reset solves the problem. The mount that came in the box was bad put I was sent a new one.On occasion it tell me to make a left insted of a right but it self corrects.

Worked great right out of the box although window mound was bad and the unit kept falling downward.I called customer support and they sent me a new mount solving the problem. The bluetooth works well although it is difficult to hear a call when placed thru 910 as the volume is very low and you cant make phone volume louder.Instructions are very vague but the people at customer support are terrific and helped me quite a few times.Want a great Gps?By this one.

TomTom 910
5 Star Review   By member WranglerMan22 - Jul 3, 2007

Strengths: Text-to-Speech, Accurate, User friendly interface

Weakness: little bigger than others

The 910 is ready to be used right out of the box. It is very accurate and comes with the latest maps. The device is very easy to use and has several great features. My favorite are the text-to-speech and bluetooth. The 910 is very easy to use and only takes a few minutes to become familiar with the interface. I would suggest this SatNav for someone looking for a higher end GPS.

Poor customer support policies ruin product
1 Star Review   By member u960108 - May 31, 2007

Strengths: User interface

Weakness: Horrible customer support policies. Maps and map updates are not available on DVD. Installed maps are significantly out of date.

TomTom customer service has changed their policy. Updates, free and purchased maps, were formerly available on DVD. The new policy is 'download only.' As of April 2007. Customer service experience was among the worst, if not the worst, I've ever had. Three phone calls: 1. Yes, we have DVD updates and customer service will contact you tomorrow. (Did not. Later said "we never said that and it's not in our records that we did." That is, what, I'm dishonest?) 2. I'm not sure we have DVD updates and customer service will contact you tomorrow. (Via email.) 3. Yes, it's true that _all_ product updates, purchased or otherwise, will only be available for download (no DVD) from now on. (Boggle!) If you do not have high speed internet service make sure you have someone who can download updates for you. I tried three times over a 100kbps connection and the downloads did not complete. You must use TomTom's update manager, and the update manager (TomTom Home) does not resume incomplete downloads. Each time the download failed it started over from the beginning (after I clicked to 'Continue.') It never succeeded. I am able to download very large files over this connection and do so routinely. Resuming broken downloads would be an enhancement to the TomTom update manager. If you need to deal with customer service you will find the people very courteous and professional, but the customer support policies are inflexible and monumentally stupid. I exchanged my TomTom for a Garmin. Your mileage may vary.

Never Get Lost Again
5 Star Review   By member Blacksmith44 - May 20, 2007

Strengths: I love the text-to-speech, very accurate with latest maps

This is a amazing piece of technology. I live in the city and the 910 makes getting around and finding places a breeze. My favorite feature is the text-to-speech. It makes driving with the gps easy to use while in the city or in heavy traffic because you can look at the road and not have to constantly look at the maps. The device is very accurate- you just input your destination and the tomtom does the rest. I haven't used the bluetooth yet, but that is my next adventure. TomTom definitely made a quality device with the 910!

Tom Tom Many Neg. Issues
2 Star Review   By John123 on CompUPlus - Apr 16, 2007

Strengths: It works

Weakness: Does not do what is advertises, no bluetooth with Sprint PCS,No Road Service etc

I thought it would work with Sprint PCS Bluetooth, it does not. It does not give road news, nor weather , nor many other features that are available in other countries. Not here in the USA. I was sent a update disk after going after it on the web site. It came in without instructions and when used screwed up my maps. Hours later after waiting on hold for a service assistant, the first one could not help me, the second person did assist in getting my maps updated. Service dept took lots of time to reach as the phone number for assistance is hidden in the manual. Hopefully a system made in USA with info for the USA. Not worldwide if you are never going out of the country Finally I would have shopped very much longer before purchasing another GPS to be sure it does what is advertised.

Weakness: In terms of whether or not the product is in stock and if a customer request a refund, the seller does not return eMails nor do they have any intention of communicating with the customer.

I ordered the GO 910 and was told the product was no longer in stock and that I would not receive the product. I requested a refund and I have not heard from the seller after phone calls and eMails. I purchased this product in February and it is now April. At the present time, I am in the process of filing an Insurance Fraud Claim via Pricegrabber.

Great All-Around GPS
5 Star Review   By member lizzyb1896 - Mar 31, 2007

Strengths: Bells & Whistles - lots of really nice functions like text-to-speech and mp3 capabilities.

The GO 910 is a really nice advanced GPS system and has so many great features - I haven't even found them all yet! I love the Text-to-Speech feature, it's great when you hear street names, etc. I also really like that you can download your MP3s right onto the device - it makes it a great all-in-one unit...

Best portable GPS for the money.
5 Star Review   By member Keng612 - Mar 12, 2007

Strengths: Includes 20 million POI's. POI's can be edited, added, exchanged. 20 GB hard drive, Has all maps pre-loaded that other charge for.

Weakness: Still have to figure out how to add POI's to an existing category. Not a big deal.

I spent months researching different GPS's and found the 910 for less than $499. It's fast, recalculating routes is fast, and best of all, it's flexible. After a search on-line, I have downloaded and used a color scheme editor for making my own custom colored maps, add voices I download, and pretty much hack a lot of other things in the 910 to make it more personalized. Accuracy is very tight on this. I was also eligible to receive the new US and Canada (North America) DVD for free from Tomtom just by entering my serial on the website and paying $6 shipping and handling. I did a test run with over 20+ waypoints in a itinerary plan and it handled it nicely and had calculated a route within seconds. I like the MP3 jukebox, but it doesn't have equalizing controls. No problem. I have a Zune and prefer using it anyway, even in the car. The 910 will connect to a Ipod, perhaps I can convince TomTom to update the firmware to read from a Zune as well. Alternate routing is great on the 910, and recalculating a route is done in seconds. I don't have much use for safety cameras in the U.S., but it does provide traffic conditions when you subscribe to the PLUS feature. The bluetooth capability in the 910 is excellent and reads all my contacts straight from my cell and allows me to answer/dial up numbers straight from the screen. I love that almost everything is controlled on the touchscreen. For models that have more knobs and stuff, just means its easier to get broke. I also tested the life on the battery, and it well exceeded the 4 hours as stated by the manufacturer. But the 910 includes all kinds of accessories, including a cigarette lighter charger and audio cables to connect to your car stereo. The bluetooth will also transmit to a bluetooth adapter if you have one attached on your car stereo. In my opinion, this works better than FM transmitters, which don't work well in big cities like Los Angeles. I was skeptical about the suction cup mount, but in my 2003 Camry, I have it fastened to the flat area near the console clock and it hasn't fallen off or become dismounted in days. I would like to see a permanent mount released so I can attach it anywhere I want on or near the console. 3rd party manufacturers will probably soon come out with one. But if you bought the 910 early on, TomTom is offering a free replacement for the newer mount that works a lot better. Just visit the website and see if your serial number comes up as a candidate. Overall, I've looked at several "New Models" from Garmin and Magellan, to name a few, and the TomTom GO 910 has all the features and more already in it that others either charge up to $400 more or they don't have certain features that are already in this model. The researchers at TomTom have really spent time on this and most of it is well thought out. I highly recommend this unit. Even if you have to be critical about every little feature, then compare those features to others and you'll end up looking at the 910 as a purchase.

TomTom 910 Has Everything You need!
5 Star Review   By member 13thMan - Jan 29, 2007

Strengths: User friendly, 3D map display, MP3 player, and great new maps!

Weakness: none yet!

For the price I think that you are getting the most value with a TomTom 910. As I mentioned above, I believe a significant advantage to the TT 910 is the map updates for North America. The new TomTom maps are some of the most advanced maps for the US.

Weak navigator
3 Star Review

Weakness: Does not navigate to your favorites.

Every time you add a favorite via the GPS positioning system that happens to be off-road, say in a parking lot, it is impossible to subsequently navigate to it. All you get is a "no route" error message.

good GPS
5 Star Review   By member hleusch - Sep 12, 2006

Strengths: good maps for North America AND Europe. Large storage space for e.g. MP3

Weakness: could use a snap-on sun shield for the display.

I question the safety and lifetime of the built-in Li battery with the unit mounted at front of the windshield and the car maybe parked for a few hours (temperature could easily exceed stated limits)

Superb technology - in an itty bitty little box
5 Star Review   By member rallymaster - Aug 25, 2006

Strengths: Easy to use, rather quick boots, a lot of features, simple design, picks up signal even when near a window. Sound quality is also a plus.

Weakness: Battery life is weak (but holds its own, takes a long time to boot after unhooking from PC. Suction cup for windshield really isnt that good of a design.

The best part about this unit is when you pass your turn accidentally. If you don't turn around quickly, it will map a new direction to take. I've had to use the function where you have to plan another route because of construction and roads not being where they are a supposed to be. I was actually driving on a road, but it showed me driving on the grass and still told me to turn right even though I was on grass. I've been having problems with the suction cup falling off after about 3.5 hours of driving, and I don't know about you but I don't think falls to the dash are good for a hard drive. Someone should redesign the unit. I've actually had to have another suction cup sent to me because the cup broke free from the base and two springs shot out of it. One almost went down the vent! How nice that would have been having that rattling when I have the AC on? This unit makes up for the flaws that are in the suction cup though, features are excellent, and anyone can use it. It takes a little getting used to, and you will probably want to go into the advanced features more than anything. Sound quality is excellent as well, although the American computerized voice sounds like it has an attitude. The “Turn around when possible.” Sounds like “Turn around you dummy you missed your road!” This is just my opinion though… so I have it set to the lady from the UK which is very clear and easy to understand. I do plan on getting the John Cleese voice soon; I just need to figure out what 10 Euros is and if it will break the bank! Go ahead an purchase this device, even though its made in China you won’t be disappointed.

so far... quite an impressive little device
4 Star Review   By member sojourner_man - Aug 19, 2006

Strengths: Massive hard drive (20GB), Extensive map coverage, can hold my entire MP3 library and play it through the car speakers (via an included audio cable), good support software.

Weakness: Annoying menu navigation quirks.

This unit so far appears to be a great combo device for GPS navigation and an MP3 player for the car. The options are too many to elaborate but appear to allow great flexibility in planning and travelling routes. A little more experimenting will probably reveal many of its nuances. But as of now I'm quite pleased with this amazing little device.

TomTom 910 is a superior product for in-vehicle use
5 Star Review

Strengths: User interface, fast processing, iPod and Bluetooth phone features, map detail, European maps included in price

Weakness: A bit too bulky and insufficient battery reserve to take on a long hike away from a vehicle

Over several months, my TomTom 910 has been all over the US and to Europe twice (UK and Italy). I am very satisfied with its operation and features. Setup was easy, and it readily recognized my mobile phone via Bluetooth. It did take a while to get a GPS fix the first time I turned it on, but now it finds the location within 30 seconds. The built-in antenna is sensitive enough that it doesn't have to be on the dash, and often picks up a signal near windows indoors. The optional external antenna probably wouldn't be necessary in most situations. The TomTom itself seems to have good build quality. The windshield mount seemed unstable at first, but I've not had any problems. The TomTom itself has a release button to easily remove off the mount when exiting the vehicle; initially, it was stiff and I had to struggle to get the TomTom and its mount apart, but after a few operations, it loosened up. The various cables (power, iPod/audio, and external antenna) plug in the mount, not the TomTom, so it's a one-step operation to disconnect. Integrated operation of phone, music and navigation works well. The unit can be playing music from its own hard drive or from an iPod, and the navigation voice or an incoming phone call will automatically mute the music. I did buy the iPod cable because I haven't had time to copy music over to the TomTom. With the cable, the TomTom touch screen provides control over the iPod, including ability to search for songs, artists, etc., and the music comes from the TomTom's speaker, which obviously is lacking in bass. I've put a few photos into the photo gallery, but that feature isn't very practical while in-vehicle. There is plenty of space available on the 20 GB hard drive for music and photos, should you wish to keep those files there. For both the North American and European maps, the database must be quite good, because most addresses can be located accurately. The street detail level is good. There is also a great number of points of interest, arranged by category. The unit recalulates routes within a few seconds. The voice is user-selectable, and is intelligible enough and has sufficient volume to be easily heard. It has the ability to convert test-to-speech, but I haven't tested it on a text document. I also haven't tested the unit's ability to update maps with current traffic information and weather via the mobile phone connection. The concept sounds good, and there is a free trial period, after which a subscription price may apply. The screen has a good range of adjustable brightness, but can get washed out in very bright sunlight. The touch feature works well, and it is easy to drag maps across the screen. There are so many features that moving among the many menus is confusing at first, but I got used to it. I've used GPS maps since 1993 (a Garmin sending NMEA data to a laptop via a homemade cable) The one thing I miss on the TomTom and other vehicle units is the ability to record a "track" of where you've been, on the hard drive, but that could be added by software updates. Overall, however, the TomTom 910 is the best implementation I've seen so far. Highly recommended. S.S., Bloomington IL

TOM TOM 910
5 Star Review   By member cents5 - Aug 17, 2006

Strengths: It has the most features of any comparable model. The ability to save destinations is great. Also the larger screen is ideal to view.

Weakness: None.

The TOM TOM 910 can be placed anywhere on the dash/windshield. The ability to interface with your computer is an added plus and a nice feature. The package comes with a full set of accessories such as ear phones, car charger, remote control, home charger and the ability to have your phone connected to it as well.

Tomtom GO 910 GPS Portable Car Navigator
4 Star Review   By member dcolier - Aug 16, 2006

Strengths: Easy to use; Great detail

Weakness: Froze up; Instruction book unhelpful

I've only had this product for 2 weeks. When I received my Tomtom, it didn't work when I first turned it on. The screen froze up and I waited about 2 days and tried it again...froze up again. After a few days I decided I was going to send it back but would attempt to try one last time. Lo and behold it started working!I'm not sure what was wrong but it works great now. When it finally turned on, a different language popped up. I could not set the GPS because obviously it wasn't in English. I called the customer support number and she was very helpful. I've used the system now a few times and it works like a charm. The directions are perfect and the display is great. It is pretty user friendly once you get use to it...even for a computer illiterate(like me). The window mount could use some work along with a rewritten detailed instruction manual. Even though I have had some problems in the beginning, it has by far redeemed itself. I've never had the opportunity to try other brands but this system seems pretty good. I would recommend this product to others.

Strengths: Excellent screen info , option of using your remote control to enter destination

Weakness: short window mount, which cause the unit to sit more directly in the sun, causing the screen to look faded...

B4 purchasing this products,..... I read that lots people were having problem with the window-mount not locking into position seen that the window-mount have two setting 1-click for adjusting... 2-click for locking in postion and at ANY-TIME you need to readjust the gps , very important for u to unlock the window-mount...this would keep the locking mechanism from being damaged.....

TOM TOM is a NO NO
1 Star Review   By member jkrabbel - Jul 11, 2006

Strengths: Good for 2 uses

Weakness: shoddy craftsmanship and abysmal customer service

I've owned this product a mere two weeks and after just 2 uses it fell apart. The screen froze and couldn't be turned off, causing it to overheat which than caused the screen to crack when touched. To make matters worse the company refused to replace or fix a clearly defective model and wanted to charge an ADDITIONAL $500 to fix. So if you've got the money to throw away and want to invest in a product that even its own producers won't stand by, by all means purchase it.

TomTom Go 910
5 Star Review   By member nelsonwong - Jul 7, 2006

Strengths: Easy to use. A lot of functions that other brands do not include. Fast processor and huge storage.

Weakness: Locks up after disattach from USB. Support has to wait for 48 hours. Battery life too short.

This is the only GPS unit provides US & Europe maps around $800 in the market. TomTom provides lot of features which Garmin not even have on their more expensive models. Fast processor. Allows to use your bluetooth cell phone to communicate the free traffic and weather services in US. Can use as a hand free speaker and headset for your bluetooth cell phone. Built in 20GB hard drive can store a lot of MP3s and photos. Display screen is slightly bigger than other brands. NO SD CARD SLOT since 20GB hard drive built in. Strange thing is come with 20GB for MP3 why provides optional cable ($30) to connect & control iPod! Still finding how to connect the unit audio output to the car aux input. Biggest problem is locks up everytime disconnect from the USB. Manual doesn't provide how to reset the unit. Have to go to Internet to find out the reset steps. Package doesn't come with detail manual. A lot of answer can be found from the Interent. Called TomTom for this issue and operators only pickup phone calls and issue service tickets. Then, send to tech in Europe and reply thru email within 48 hours. Still don't have answer on why unit locks up after disconnect from USB. Battery can use around 2-3 hours. Use in car is OK but hiking may be a problem. Since the unit has a lot of features, get to know the unit at home before actually use on road. Will be very dangerous to play with the special features while driving. 2 days after I bought the unit, I went to Circuit City and played with Garmin C550 and Navi 350. Although they are about the same price, features and options are not even come close to the TomTom Go 910. Excellent product.

Tom Tom Go910
5 Star Review   By member monkihead - Jun 25, 2006

Strengths: Intuative design, large screen, lots of memory

Weakness: Sun Glare

The navigate feature is designed well. I like how it remembers former destinations, allowing recall and not having to program it all over again. Great idea giving user option to switch KB to qwerty style. Trip speed and est. time of arrival is surprisingly accurate. I am still trying to get bluetooth to connect with cell phone. Software installation and unit connection with PC was flawless. On-line update site has plenty of options you can download, some free some not. Plenty of free map color styles to choose from. All GPS units looked pretty much the same feature wise and price, I almost went Garmin, but after reading about all GPS on-line for 3 months and then actually going to store to try all of my choices; the choice was clearly the Go910. Tom Tom's better user interface, data input process and simply larger screen clinched it.

TOMTOM 910
5 Star Review   By member MPKramer - Jun 21, 2006

Strengths: Easy to use right out of the box!!

Weakness: Base mounting leaves something to be desired!

Bought it new from Circuit City, didn't have much time to price shop. First one out of the box was defective and was not able to acquire a Sat Lock. "Note to anyone purchasing a GPS - if you are in a store with a GPS display, make sure they are all working and acquiring satellites and the stores current lat/lon.) Second one worked flawless and I was able to acquire with in three minutes from start up. -Good- Battery Time is/was about 3 hours. Charted a course from Seattle Washington to Patuxent River, MD in 7 minutes. Color display is sensitive to touch commands and works well. Voices are selectable. Auto-senses day/night and has various color schemes. 3-D view was very good. Re-routing is pretty quick for a missed exit or street. -Mediocre- Constantly plotted courses and gave us three different routes along our 4 day journey to Maryland. Not a big deal but you cannot recall the other route. This happened when we went to sleep at night and turned the GPS on in the morning. We did not change the course on our own. Voice has problem pronouncing some words - such as Avenue pronounced Avenrue, etc.. found about 10 words so far. -Bad- Mount is not very stable, have to recheck it to make sure the GPS is connected to the stem just to feel safe. Cannot edit Favorites once they are inputted into the GPS. Have not tried this on a computer. Overall - Check your GPS right out of the box. If you wear polarized glasses the display will look much more dim - this is true with "any" lcd driven screen whether on a laptop, digital camera, etc.. Notes- I am very satisfied with this GPS and won't trade it for any other brand. I checked the rest and this one meet all my needs. Now to hook up my Cell Phone "Bluetooth" and start exploiting more features. Sincerely, mpkramer

Not for me.
2 Star Review

Strengths: POI second to none. Enjoyed being able to use this unit walking around.

Weakness: maps for some roads not accurate, no touch screen for poi, no address book

Has this model for ten days and it stopped working, would not turn on. The maps are off and showed me driving in people's back yard. Another trip had me taking a right turn on the wrong street. I returned it.
